Sharpe sat back on Dog's back, pointedly not grabbing his musket or anything similar. The first rule of having any particular expertise was knowing when to shut up and let other people step in... and talking to squirrels fell well outside of Sharpe's areas of expertise. He kept his eyes on the surrounding underbrush and off the carnage. At the best of times, Sharpe was not the firmest believer that large scale violence really achieved anything worthwhile. Against humans or animals, slaughter was just wasteful.

The squirrel continues to lie there for a moment, the breathing stopping entirely, but then slowly rolls off of it's side and onto all fours, tail flicking back and forth.

"Not Count's Men, Not Druids. Not Safe. Not yet." The Squirrel said quickly, it's voice high-pitched, squeaky, and coming fast enough that the words are almost blurring together. It's eyes shift back and forth quickly, taking in the sight. "More Safe Than If Count's Men. What Want? What Doing Forest?" The Squirrel may have been gifted with speech, and enough intelligence to convey ideas, but it's vocabulary and sense of grammar was clearly a bit lacking.

The Squirrel was staying stock still save for it's flicking tail and darting eyes, but it was clearly braced to dart off and try to escape at the first sign of trouble.

She moved with the deliberate grace of a practiced hunter, though her movement was directed mostly away from the squirrel as she continued to search for signs about the size of the force the Count was fielding. She wanted to know how many enemies they might be facing.

"We came to bring a message to the druids. To Relora." Ne'charri wondered if the name would resonate with the diminutive creature. "But it looks like the Count and his men need a good talking to." She turned to the squirrel briefly, "Run along, tell who you will about us."

Ne'charri turned to march after the boot prints of the Count's men, content to leave Sharpe and Keeper to ask additional questions with the simple beast, if they wanted.

"Not hurt. Played Dead. Safer." The squirrel said. "Nice People. I Go. Find Druids." The Squirrel's assessment of being uninjured appeared to be correct, based on a quick surface examination. The most likely explanation is that it rolled in the blood of it's killed fellows and then laid very, very still for a while. After a moment of hesitation more, and assuming it wasn't asked more questions or otherwise stopped, the squirrel scampered off towards a tree on the northeast end of the clearing, climbing up the tree quickly, leaping onto a branch and running along it, passing out of sight, though they hear it scampering for a few moments.

"That could have gone worse," Sharpe noted, not mentioning exactly how he thought the conversation with a squirrel would go. Now it was only a matter of the squirrel remembering that it had promised to fetch the druids. At a command, Dog knelt and allowed Sharpe to slide off his loyal porter's back.

He grabbed his musket and slung it over his back. The trusty firearm was not exactly the most dangerous of his implements but it was the one the druids were most likely to recognize. Best let them fixate on the weapons they understood as opposed the openly carrying the ones they did not.

"Hey! Ne'charri! The squirrel said it would bring the druids to us! Better not go wandering in their territory without permission."

 "Just gonna have a chat," Ne'charri calls out nonchalantly as she keeps her eyes forward. As she casually ducks under a low-hanging tree branch she adds, "Catch up when you're ready." She doesn't move noticeably quickly, going at a similar pace as to what one might expect when taking a leisurely stroll through the countryside. Just as noticeably is that she doesn't slow down or hesitate in any way as Sharpe and Keeper call upon her.

The tracks continue on for over a mile before going a bit further into the forest, coming up to a clearing. She hears the Count's men - presumably - before she actually sees the clearing entrance, which is up ahead, a long turn in the animal track the footprints were on to get past a particularly tall and thick oak tree.

"...and if you slack off, the fucking druids will start turning trees against us and we're all dead!" Someone was shouting. There was the sound of flesh hitting flash - a slap? Punch? and someone letting out a cry of pain. "Keeping watch is a sacred obligation to your fellow soldiers, especially in hostile territory like this! You can say goodbye to any leave, and all your fucking pay for the next week!"

Someone made a sound that sounded like protest, but the voice kept going, "No f*cking arguing, you pathetic, gutless, lazy worm of a soldier! And the rest of you, get back to digging those firepits and ! If we have to smoke all the animals out, then we'll do that! The Count wants this whole section of forest clear of Druid spies by tomorrow! You and you! Get that kindling wet! You, keep tearing off branches, we're going to need more!"

There was a Chorus of 'Aye Sir!" from a group of people - it was hard to say how many - and then the sound of people moving, the leader making a few more shouts, directing people, micromanaging.

Her eyes focused on the middle of the pack, where she assumed the leader would be; barking orders meant that most likely he wasn't helping with any actual work. Individually each of them barely registered to Ne'charri, she didn't bother making eye contact with any of them to the point of walking right past anyone in her way, and she didn't waste her time trying to get any particular person's attention.

"Who leads here?!" she called gruffly, and loud enough for anyone nearby to hear as she continued her slow march towards the center.

Keeper does his best to rush after Ne'charri. Knowing how headstrong the woman was, there is always the chance she may bite off more than she could chew.

Once Keeper is able to identify whomever is in charge, he takes a breath and places a hand on his gifted amulet from Ne'charri. He utters aloud and bows, "May the Lord have mercy on all of our souls, and steady their hands as He has been steady for us."


OOC: Cast calm emotions to affect as many people as possible, making sure to include the leader in the area of effect. Will DC 18. Not sure if this counts as a standard action triggering a surprise round.

Keeper was able to hit the man in charge and six of the ten other soldiers in the clearing. Most of the six immediately seem to relax and their shoulders sag a little, but the one in charge seemed to be unaffected. The other four that weren't effected drew their weapons at the sight of Keeper's spell, but no one attacked, yet.

That man was a grizzled, older man, a few light, faded scars on his hands and face suggesting he'd seen quite a few battles. He, like all the men, wore chainmail armor, he had a sword and shield, and an axe at his belt. His men looked to be fairly young, one maybe just into his late teens, recent recruits or conscripts, likely. He looked like a blood vessel was going to burst in his forehead, his cheeks red, eyes popping with rage at the sight of Ne'charri and then his men suddenly calming. He wears a blue and red tabard over his armor.

The clearing had tents set up, and near the tents were assorted crates, barrels, digging tools. There were several piles of recently cut branches and collected twigs and the like, as well as a number of pits in the process of being dug, with several of the soldiers having shovels on the ground next to them.

"Give me one good reason not to gut you and your friend!" The man in charge said, approaching Ne'charri, sword raised up, pointed at her. "You're no civilized woman, dressing like an orc, or worse, a druid! And you, old man!" He gestured at Keeper with his blade, "Undo what you did to my men or I'll split you navel to neck! NOW!" The veins in his neck seemed to be bulging.

"If being civilized means bleeding every living thing not wearing your colors and turning the lands under your feet to ash, then you can keep civilization all to yourself." She adds a loud huff at the end to emphasize her point. "And yer welcome to try and gut me," she slowly draws her finger down the length of her chest down to her belly button. With each word she drew an inch closer to the man, and she spoke in low tones. Those nearby could hear, but her words were clearly meant for him. "Or maybe you'd rather slit my throat instead," her hand moves up to her throat where she traces an imaginary line underneath her jaw from one ear to the other. By now she was clearly within the man's reach, unfazed by the danger she was putting herself in. "And I'm gonna give you the chance. Right now."

She turned away from the man as she stepped back and turned her attention to his troops. "Go home. Leave now and you leave with your lives. But you," she says as she spins back to face the leader. "I know you. I see your heart. You are a coward, but you won't walk away. You'll follow your orders to the death." She narrows her eyes and clenches her hands. "This is your chance. Gut me." Ne'charri opens her hands to show she's unarmed, with only a dagger tucked into a short scabbard on her thigh.

"Call me a coward!? To the Nine Hells with you, Druid B****!" The leader gestured to his men, snarling, vein in his neck throbbing, "Draw your weapons you bastards! If there's one, they'll be more! But this one is for me!"

The four soldiers not affected by Keeper's spell draw their weapons, though they do seem to be at least wary - and one of them seems to be on the very of crapping himself. The other six, still effected by Keeper's spell, don't draw their weapons at all - they do seem disquieted, but the spell retains enough of a hold for the supernatural calm to remain their primary emotional state.

Mechanics

Since it seems like it's just gonna be Ne'charri vs the Serjeant, I don't think there's much need for Initiative. There's not much chance he can kill you, barring a string of critical his on his part, but he's not a level 1 mook either.
