Sandpoint Prominent Figures

Kendra Deverin, Mayor of Sandpoint

Representing both the mayorship and a founding family, Kendra Deverin has served as Sandpoint's mayor for the past eight years.  Lawmaker, judge, and general peacemaker, Deverin has proven to be both an adept diplomat and stern hand when need be — skills likely honed during her youth in Magnimar and adventuring in the region.

With a personal — some say sisterly — style of governing, Kendra holds the abiding respect of most of Sandpoint's people, charming them with her fiery temper and tenacity for justice (as demonstrated during the Late Unpleasantness). A council of several of the town's most respected and affluent landowners aids in Deverin's work.

While several councilmembers have their own agendas and visions for the town, the mayor's no-nonsense attitude assures that council decisions ever work toward the common good.

Belor Hemlock, Sheriff

Meting out the town's good justice, sheriff and councilmember Belor Hemlock keeps watch over Sandpoint's people.  Held as something of a local hero, Hemlock is lauded with being the man who brought the serial killer, Chopper, to justice.

Although rarely faced with misconduct more severe than vandalism and public drunkenness, the sheriff is both a keen wit and a skilled swordsman, and openly proves both when the rare crime requires it.

While the town's chief enforcer, Hemlock knows the difference between the word of the law and its intent, and often gives those under his protection the benefit of the doubt.

Abstalar Zantus, Town Priest

Father Zantus is a current councilmember and the high priest of Sandpoint Cathedral.  While himself a worshipper of Desna, he has slipped into his role as high priest of a multidenominational church easily since the unfortunate demise of his predecessor.

He has proven to be pleasant in demeanor, and  quite open to matters regarding other faiths, willingly serving in the role of spiritual advisor for worshippers of the many religions in Sandpoint.

Titus Scarnetti, Noble

Patriarch of the industrious but conservative Scarnetti family, Titus has monopolized both Sandpoint's lumber and milling industries, however recent rumours have flown high of Scarnetti-sponsored arson on other grain mills in the region.

Easily Sandpoint's most notorious noble family, many of Sandpoint's elderly Varisian locals still have not forgotten nor forgiven Alamon Scarnetti's assault on their people more than 40 years ago, even with Alamon 20 years in the ground at Sandpoint Cemetary.

Holding a seat on the Sandpoint Council, Titus Scarnetti frequently uses his control over the lumber the Valdemars need for their enterprises as leverage, garnering the other councilmember's support.

Ethram Valdemar, Noble

The oldest councilman holding a seat in Sandpoint’s government, Ethram Valdemar is the sole surviving founding member of the Sandpoint Mercantile League.

While he has passed on all of the family’s shipbuilding and other businesses to his sons of late, Ethram remains an active voice within Sandpoint’s town council.

Some say that the old man’s days may be numbered however, for he has harboured a persistent lung infection that has resisted a permanent cure.

Lonjiku Kaino, Noble

Descendant of an exiled family from faraway Minkai, Lonjiku Kaino was the first of his line to have been born in Varisia, and as such has never seen the wonders of his motherland.

That said, the eccentric and ill-tempered councilman has carried on his father’s proud work as a glassmaker, regularly shipping products from the Sandpoint Glassworks as far as Korvosa, and making the Kaino family business perhaps the most prosperous venture in all of Sandpoint.

The unfortunate death of his wife during the Late Unpleasantness two years ago has seemingly further embittered the nobleman, straining relationships with his children, though he still occasionally accosts his daughters in public and accuses them for shaming his family name to anyone who will listen.

Luther Ranst, Noble

Borne out of a wealthy family in Magnimar, Luther Ranst led a successful mining expedition under the limestone escarpment known as the Devil's Platter eight years ago, effectively expanding his family wealth with a veritable treasure horde of gems and precious metals excavated from underneath the most prominent geographic feature in the Sandpoint Hinterlands.

Having secured his riches, Luther Ranst settled into a modest villa just south of the coastal penninsula west of Boggy Creek, his charm and charisma won him over with the people of Sandpoint, and he was voted in on the most recently vacant seat of the town council shortly after.

Since then, many a prospector has tried to follow in Councilman Ranst's footsteps, his swift rise to fame leading just as many to death or injury by goblins and various other local monsters, and none with any sizable fortune to behold.

Sandpoint Notable Characters

spacer.png

Ameiko Kaino

Ameiko is a beautiful but somewhat irreverent young woman of Tian descent who runs Sandpoint’s oldest inn. Technically one of Sandpoint’s nobles, Ameiko’s never been comfortable with the trappings of nobility, and spent some time out of town as an adventurer before she made enough money to outright buy the Rusty Dragon — much to her conservative father’s chagrin.

She spends as little time as possible at Kaino manor on the bluff, leaving that building to her father and his well-paid servants. With her mother’s death and her half-brother’s disappearance two years ago, along with the mysterious and sudden end of her adventuring career last year, Ameiko’s seen her share of personal tragedy, yet she maintains an upbeat attitude despite her grief.

Although never short of friends and admirers in town, Ameiko has never accepted anyone as more than a friend; she meticulously dodges personal questions and diplomatically avoids proposals of romance, much to the frustration of several eager suitors in Sandpoint. Rumour in town has it Ameiko has a secret lover in town, or that she has been spurned romantically during her adventuring years, but her skill at diplomacy has ensured that even her most ardent pursuers don’t hold grudges for long after their matrimonial offers have been turned down.

A talented singer and samisen player, Ameiko could certainly lead a comfortable, safe life in the relative safety of the town of Sandpoint if she wanted to. However, though she would likely never admit to it, something says she isn’t quite ready to shelf away her adventuring life for good, as she keeps a peculiar open invitation at her tavern for adventurers to hit the stage and recount true tales of their daring deeds, in exchange for a discount at room rentals.

Though never short on staff, Ameiko isn’t afraid to use her spells to aid in the work around the Rusty Dragon, whether it be food prep, guest service or cleaning, to stopping bar brawls or patch up wounds afterwards.

spacer.pngSandru Vhiski

Twenty-seven years old and still well within his prime, Sandru Vhiski is a charming man, handsome and street smart in precisely the ways that could’ve made him a highly successful Sczarni con artist, even when discounting the fact that his older brother Jubrayl is rumoured to be the local Sczarni leader in Sandpoint. By contrast, Sandru’s personality couldn’t be further than those commonly found in the Szarni’s ranks, for he had embodied a sense of fairness and compassion from a young age.

When a violent storm struck the Lost Coast in 4687AR, Sandru’s parents were among those slain by the floods and winds that ravaged the area, leaving him and his brothers Alder and Jubrayl orphaned from the catastrophe. While Jubrayl was old enough at that point to strike out on his own, Sandru and his younger brother fell under the care of Koya Mvashti, a family friend and practically an aunt. Under her support, Sandru managed to avoid falling in with the Sczarni, instead seeking employment as a caravan guard when he came of age.

For several years, Sandru avoided returning to Sandpoint, but after losing his job in the caravan business, he joined up with a group of adventurers eager to explore the Mushfens, Churlwood and Fogscar Mountains. That’s where Sandru met Ameiko and the two became fast friends, though neither speak much about that time, only that they’ve never been anything more than close friends.

When he retired from adventuring, Sandru bought his own caravan and invited Koya to join him. Along with two Varisian brothers Bevelek and Vankor Dalmuvian, they make the route from Riddleport thru Magnimar to Korvosa several times a year, only stopping into Sandpoint for several days at a time.

While Sandru no longer resides in Sandpoint, he still considers himself one of the town’s citizens. When the weather makes travelling too dangerous and impractical, Sandru prefers to stay in Magnimar, where he helps other Varisians with his carpentry skills, and has recently taken to flirting with the political scene of that city.
