As Olive grabbed the girl, her eyes widened, and she put her own hands over her mouth to muffle a small sound. Her attempt to stay quiet was too late. The four grown men woke the minute the girl was pulled from their grasp. They managed to keep their mouth shut despite their surprise, they glanced at Olive running away with the girl and glanced at the open cell. They quickly stood and started to give chase.

OOC

So...let's call this pre-initiative. Guards appear to still be asleep. The 4 people around the girl are clearly giving chase to Olive. The drow also wants out of the building.

Just don't cause us any trouble, and stay out of our way, Glanton whispered at the drow.

He turned to the four men clamoring after Olive and the girl. In a motion practiced time and time again in the decades all but beginning with the year he took a first halting step, the woodsman nocked an arrow to the bowstring.

In a calm and level voice, Glanton added,

We have weapons and the will to use them. Weapons that you altogether lack. Stay in your cell. That's the way things are, and how they are going to be.

image.png.2677bf2642475a918d9fe2fec709862f.pngThe still unnamed drow raised an eyebrow at Glanton, but stayed quiet and immediately followed the rest of the group. Olive is able to get out the door with the child. Glanton and the drow just make it by Sutter and are in the doorway when the group that was in the cell starts chasing after Olive. Sutter reacts by flipping the table over. Wooden bowls and spoons fly everywhere, and clay mugs shatter all over the floor.

image.png.405ae05fba0ef4a4425b36070bbbfba8.pngThe noise manages to (finally) wake the two guard members at their desks. As they wake you notice for the first time that they have orange-tinted skin, and long pointy ears. Their eyes search the room and they hiss as they pull scimitars from their sheaths, ready to act.

The four humans pile out of the cage before the table flips and they stop in their tracks. You can now get a good look at them. There is a massive man in the front, an older man with greens in his hair next to him, a slender woman with short red hair, and a very beautiful woman with greying hair and glowing eyes.

They had the girl, retrieved from some foul constabulary secreted within the bowels of the underworld itself. Glanton wasn't here to kill as a purpose in and of itself, although kill he had, and no foresight was needed to tell him that bloodshed would come again before the day was up.

Out the door, quick! he whispers to his companions and their perhaps ill-found drow companion. He then retrieves a bag of ball bearings and scatters it upon the floor behind them. Outside, he scans for hints of other witnesses to the scene.

crunchuse an object action to dump ball bearings ( https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Ball bearings#content ) and then flee with the rest of the party.

Olive was already outside when the plan fell to pieces. She still had the girl by the front of her dress, but she put her feet on the ground and began backing them both up, until she was clear of whomever might storm out the door. She stowed her axe and pulled out her bow.

"If things go badly, run. That way." Olive gestured with her chin in the direction from which they had originally come.

izju8PZ.pngSutter bows with a flourish and backs away from the befuddled guards. "Apologies, my esteemed custodians, for the unintended spectacle." He doubted that the guards spoke the common tongue and his words likely only added to their confusion. He then turns and dashes out of the door to join his companions, leaving the guards to contend with the unraveling mayhem of the jailbreak.

There were several questions that needed to be asked. Most of them started with the word "Why." Why had the plan gone belly up? Why were these four strangers chasing them? Who they were wasn't even a consideration at this point. This was a jail break now and she needed to let loose with some of what she'd been holding back.

As Istria retreated, her shield duplicated itself and floated behind her, its baleful eyes lit and waited for the next fool who'd chase its charges.

OOC

Istria retreats along with the others. She uses her bonus action to cast spiritual weapon with a second level spell slot. If a pursuer comes within sixty feet of her, she'll use an action to cast sacred flame.

Ball bearing hit the floor and you all manage to get out of the room. Once you clear the door things inside go even more crazy. The prisoners appear to be unarmed, and the red-haired woman appears to go for a chest in the middle of the room. You can see the old man turn into a bear to help defend her as she tries to get into the chest. The large bare-chested man makes for the doorway but falls prey to the ball bearings and ends up in a weird balancing shuffle before hitting the floor face first. The older woman moves to the edge of the ball bearings, moves her hands, says something, and the ball bearings seem to blow out the door. She reaches into her pocket and pulls something out. She holds up to the doorway so you can see it. It's small and somewhat difficult to see.

The two orange guards rush forth with axes being drawn, and the bring them down heavily on the bear. The bear eats the blows but seems no worse for the wear.

The drow prisoner slams the door shut, leaving you blissfully unaware of what else is unfolding in the building.

Glanton took one last look behind him at the older woman who has dispersed his ball bearings so carefully dumped all over the floor.

He hisses, she has a card just like one of our own. Good time to show us, right as it all went to pieces. Still, I say we cut and run - they can handle themselves and we've sprung them from the cage. In any case we'll draw off pursuers to make their escape easier. We cannot linger, there will be more guards, I can see them eyeing us already in the distance.

And as they say, discretion is often the better part of valor, and Glanton will make a break for it.

"Up girl. Let's go."

Olive backed up, bow still in hand and grabbed the girl by the arm. "Keep up and we'll have you out of here in no time."

In a few strides, Olive caught up with Glanton and began making a break for it along side him.

"What does that mean in the wider context of everything though?" Istria asked as the floating shield of her goddess followed her companions, "There's no way of telling what that means for this whole situation. I'm with you. We retreat. I'll try to hold any pursuit off if it comes our way."

OOC

Istria has a passive perception of 23, but I rolled just in case and got 21. Istria still retreats along with the others. She uses her bonus action to move her spiritual weapon along with them during their escape. If an enemy pursuer comes within sixty feet of her, she'll use an action to cast sacred flame.

  • 2 weeks later...

Olive drags the girl along, but she isn't moving as fast as expected. Her slowness is not a lack of trying, but a combination of short legs and seeming...out of it. The ruckus behind the door begins to fade into the distance as you move towards the bridge you crossed when you first came in. Drow guards rush toward the prison, but the noise inside draws their attention away. You think you might hear some loud guttural roar and then the prison seems to burst at the seems. It explodes outwards and there are no moving people inside. You find yourself on the near side of the bridge, no one seems to be around.

Glanton winces at the explosion. Perhaps everyone inside was now dead. Perhaps they were unknown allies in that cell, perhaps they could have even been friends if the tides of fortune were different. Glanton did not have many friends. But that was that.

In a whisper, he said, We should find a place to take a breather and check up on the girl. Istria, I know you have some of the healing arts. Perhaps you could treat anything that ails her? Even if nothing outright malign was inflicted upon her, incarceration is hard on anyone. She's been through a lot but I don't need to tell you that.
