Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 2: The Darkest Dawn

 

Shayne launched another magical bolt of pure force energy across the battlefield, striking and bringing down the drow for good as he crumbled into a heap in the sticky webbing.

 

With the drow fallen, Sabyne turned her attention to the remaining ghoul, striking out with her warhammer again and again, but the first strike the ghoul dodged completely and the second one glanced off of the chain shirt that he wore nullifying the impact.

 

Fritz fired off his crossbow as he imbued it with the assistance of his wild magic to ensure it struck the ghoul soundly. The projectile penetrating through the undead creature's shoulder.

 

Amber moved forward, climbing up on the rocks near Sabyne before launching a mote of flame at the remaining ghoul. The undead turned just in time to cause the flame [to miss him completely.

 

Zuma rushes in between Amber and Sabyne and strikes the ghoul with his blade. The cut coming across the ghoul's torso as the black ichor flowed from the wound.

 

Staying just in the edge of the darkness Eve fired another shot from her bow, one that found the ghoul's skull and the arrow popped through the bone and the ghoul fell, ending the threat once more.

Fritz waits a few seconds to make sure no one else is coming. That was too close. He then pauses a bit, catches his breath, and moves towards the others, moving slowly to avoid any traps, and gathering what crossbow bolts he can.

"Is everyone ready to keep moving? We still need to catch up with the prisoners."

The anger that bubbled and billowed within her would not be quenched by her thirsting weapon.  Blinded by the pounding drums, Sabyne missed the mark, only to see the bright lights of her brother's magic end the tangled target.  Before she could turn to end the other, an elven aimed arrow destroyed it.  "DARKNESS DAMNED BLOODY FORSAKEN FOREST!"  

 

Strands of crimson hair clung to her face.  They stretched across her pale skin like thin cracks along aged porcelain.  She glared down at the mis-colored halfling, her ire momentarily finding a new focus.  But his simple question and quiet reminder of purpose, gave her pause.  Enough pause to take in a breath of cold Klavekian air.  The sharp pain brought on by breathing made her aware of injuries received.  "shit..."

 

The paladin nodded to Fritz.  "We keep moving."  One hand held her warhammer aloft to light the way, while the other clung to her side, attempting to stopper the wound that left vampiric wine drops trailing behind her.

Shayne hobbled over to the fallen tree their ambusher had been hiding behind and took a seat. A long sigh escaped his lips, the warmth swirling into visible spirals before fading into nothingness. Despite the darkness, the wind, and the poor weather, Alin Durqua's famed leathers kept him surprisingly cozy. It was a strange sensation, knowing it was cold but not feeling the chill that should be permeating down to his bones. He took in a sharp breath of air and looked up at the night sky. "WE CHECK THE BODIES OF YET ANOTHER GROUP TRYING TO MURDER US IN THESE WOODS, THEN REST FOR A MOMENT." He let his gaze fall back to his sister, who had already started marching off.

"How many times are we going to rush off stumbling into an ambush or trap? How many of us are going to have to die before you all take a moment to rest?" Shayne ran his fingers through his hair trying to stifle his frustration. "Who ever took those people needs them alive for something. They also have the resources to leave half a dozen ambushes in a forest hell bent on murdering everything. An hour to lick our wounds isn't going to make a difference to them. But us dying because we didn't rest certainly will."

 

"Sabyne. I'm begging you. Let's just take an hour or so. We need to search this lot for information anyway. Maybe they have a handy map leading to their nefarious leader's lair. Or some soap." He lifted his arm pit and sniffed. "Though I'm oddly fresh, despite the blood and all." The male Kuznetsov twin turned to Eve, his last hope. "Eve, back me up here...please." His eyes spoke more than his words, as he narrowed at her. And I won't mention about your freaky disappearing thing.

Panting, blade hanging at his side as the last of the ambushers falls, Zuma startles and jumps when Sabyne shouts. "Erm," he starts, then stops to catch his breath. He is torn. He wants to get out of this damned forest, but he feels like he could slump over at any moment. In truth, he does not much care which decision triumphs in the end, mind too hazy for such critical thoughts.

 

Taking Shayne's words as direction enough to keep him occupied while the siblings debate their course, Zuma begins searching their fallen foes for anything of value. Perhaps he could restock his dwindling supply of arrows, at least.

Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 2: The Darkest Dawn

The first issue for some at least was to search the bodies of the fallen, and to gather anything of use in a small pile behind the boulders where the battle had ended.

 

Shayne started with the last ghoul that had fallen, a ghoul wearing armor and a ring that had caught his eye.

 

- chain shirt

- 8 bolts
- ring (black band with a crimson spiral going around it)
- wand (see description below)

 

Wand Description

This wand is made out of Hackberry Wood, which usually prefers those bound by honor and integrity. The handle is made out of Hornbeam Wood, which in turn often prefers the more mysterious owner. However, the combination of this strand of Hackberry Wood and Hornbeam Wood means the wand will seek out somebody mysterious.

 

A wand usually has 1 or 2 cores, but some have 3, this wand has 1 core. A core of demon tail hair which enhances the power of spells, but refuses to aid with destructive spells.

 

The wand measures 13 inches/33 cm and has a beautifully crafted look. The particular strand of Hackberry Wood used in this wand is very rare, and demon tail hair is very rare as well.

 

Meanwhile Zuma began searching the body of the drow acolyte...

Instant frustration burst from her as her brother, once again, took an opposing position to her own.  She was convinced that if she said something as simple as 'the ground is below our feet', he would argue it wasn't.  But as she turned to confront her obstinate sibling, Sabyne's midnight gaze fell upon Zuma.  They were more injured than she and knelt beside the dead doing Shayne's bidding.  She sighed and closed her eyes.  "Fine.  We rest.  But no more than an hour.  Stationary targets are easier to kill."

 

Sabyne began to pull and push on the logs their foes had hidden behind.  "Let's at least build some cover so if we're ambushed we don't die in the first volley."  There was no humor in her tone.  She was tired, in pain and all out of patience.

After a few minutes picking through the corpses, Shayne cursed to himself. "Why can't the evil doer's just leave a note with a map where they are headed, just once?" His only consolation was a pair of interesting items that caught his eye. Picking them up, he moved over to where his sister had moved the log. From what he could tell, it wouldn't provide anymore cover than it had before hand, but there was no way he was going to mention that to her without getting socked in the mouth. The only thing still goading him to say it was that she was in such a poor state, the exertion might make her pass out. Not that he imagined for one moment that would stop her.

 

"Amber." He waved the Halfling over and handed her the wand. "Do you know how to ascertain the properties of magic items? It is a nice wand, but I also found this ring, and I won't be able to do both in the time we're resting." He picked up a stone in his empty hand and closed his eyes. The light on Sabyne's warhammer winked out, and the stone illuminated. Carefully, he balanced it on the log behind him.

 

The light cast a long shadow in front of Shayne from which rose a box that seemed to be made of shadow itself. Inside was a piece of parchment and quill. Shayne placed the ring in the box and began to scribble a note in a delicate, flourishing hand as he muttered under his breath. "You owe me Sovrelah, so make this quick." When he was done, he placed the note in the box and closed it. Without a word, it began to sink back into his shadow as though it had never been there at all. The male Kuznetsov twin continued to sit cross legged with his eyes closed as the rest of the group finally settled in.


As their rest completed, the box rose once again through his shadow. Shayne excitedly opened the box and pulled out a piece of parchment the color of blood. After a moment he began to scowl. "Don't have time right now? Piss off Sovrelah! You owe me!" He kicked the snow at his feet in frustration before taking a deep breath. "You think you have a friend, but the moment you leave they are too busy for you..."

 

"It will take me more time to appraise the ring. But in the mean time, we can either have someone wear it and see if it does anything...it could also be cursed, so there is that."

Fritz helps the others gather what they want from the dead bodies. Since Amber and Shayne have already claimed the wand and ring, Fritz finds nothing else of interest. He isn't skilled with armor or weapons, so he lets the others divide that up if they want. 

"While we need to keep going, a rest would be welcome. I agree with Sabyne, though, that we should keep it to just a quick breather."

 

He spends the time fidgeting, like he always does, but maybe a little more than usual. He is anxious to get moving again and try to catch up with the prisoners. And he is getting even more jumpy with all of these ambushes we keep stumbling into. 

 

After the break, when Shayne says he cannot figure out the ring, Fritz volunteers to try it. "I'll try it on and see what it does."

Amber skipped over at Shayne's beckoning, eager to assist in the task ahead. In truth, the halfling sorceress was feeling a bit sheepish over the recent battle as it was her idea to approach the entrapped warrior in the first place. Though the dark forest had proved time and again that ideals such as helpfulness and compassion were unhealthy to keep to in this dangerous environment, the chipper maiden couldn't help but worry that giving into their fears would have a spirally affect on the already frayed party.

 

"Ascertain properties of magical items? I don't really... oh, but I know someone who might. Happy to take a look." Taking the Hackberry and Hornwood wand, Amber moves to find a bit of shelter in the fortress of logs Sabyne was building. Turning the mystical item this way and that the fledging sorceress takes a very different approach from Shayne's arcane meditation. She eyes, shakes, sniffs and even goes so far as to take a soft bite of the artifact in hopes to unlock its secretsAmber: Do you have any idea what this thing is? And am I doing this right?

Thraxys: I cannot imagine a technique less 'right' than the one you are currently employing. And I have an excellent imagination.

Amber: Well what should I do with it then? Knowing you, you'd probably want me to set it on fire. Wait, please don't tell me to set it on fire.

Amber: Wow, you got all that from when I bit it? And what does all that mean?

Thraxys: It means it is a stupid item and quite useless. Give it to the elusive elf. Or the maggot-kin. It will be a natural fit.
. After some time has passed, the halfling clears her throat to indicate she has completed her investigation and holds up the relic for all to see.

 

"So my friend and I have been able to determine that this item is.. uh.. quite potent and.. super useful. It's a Sorcerous Twig of Underbrush Bindings. Quite rare and highly sought after. You can tell by the distinctive way the Hackleberry Wood and Hornbeam Wood come together to join at this joint. And by the taste. Biting it was critical. It can be used by a powerful hunter of the wilds to create a trap that, when stepped on, will lift the target high into the air. My friend thinks it will be most useful for Eve or Zuma, both of whom she thinks would put it to good use."

Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 2: The Darkest Dawn

 

Having rested for a short while to bandage wounds and to identify the enchanted items they had found the group had regathered their belongings and continued to follow the trail north, they had walked for almost an hour now and even in the darkness they knew that was around mid-morning already.

 

Suddenly the darkness that had surrounded them for so long lifted into a gray dusk as they emerged from the forest into a low valley leading north to a hillside and then a set of sheer cliffs. Thinning trees lead to a debris covered clearing about a half-mile outside an old gray castle that could be seen on a large hill ahead in the gray light. A place some of you recognize as Adrik's Folly.
