Sailors on the Starless Sea - IC

The Temple of Chaos begins to shift under your feet, and rocks rain down from the cave ceiling. Thunder shakes the air, and green energy flashes across the walls and ceiling of the cavern. The pit overflows with lava, which starts to ooze downhill in all directions.

You've gathered up what coins and treasure you can. Lyra is carrying the unmoving Hugo, and Bernard is helping Bar hustle over to the rest of you. You're all gathered together.

What now?

OOC: Three rounds have elapsed since the final death of Molan. It will take you three more rounds to race down the ramp and another round to reach the Dragon Ship. If you are carrying bodies, it will take twice as long. Exception: you can carry Hugo without penalty. He's light.

Tabitha

Unwilling to let Alphonse go, both physically and metaphorically, Tabitha continued to carry his body. She hoped Helge was still helping, but Gods willing she'd drag him alone if necessary. She'd doom the world for him.

"No, no, Alphie, you have to wake up, have to wake up. It's just like... when you were little... you remember?... remember... We--we'll--we'll get you back home and and and we'll find... the best... surgeon around... We'll fix you right up honey."

Helge

Helge has done what she can. She cannot save Alphonse, but she has faith that her prayers will escort him to the afterlife.

She has a mind to scoop up a handful of coins, if only to help alleviate the misery and suffering of the world outside, but the lava makes that difficult.

"RUN!" she yells, in case it wasn't self-evident. "We must be on the dragon ship when the cavern collapses!"

She is concerned about those carrying bodies: it will slow them down dangerously.

As she runs down the ramp, Helge tries to gather up any stretches of rope or chain that might have been binding prisoners: these may be desperate lifelines for those who cannot get to the boat in time.

Thugnar stopped long enough to say one thing. "Tabitha, your son is gone and so will be we if we are not running to the boat. He would not want you to die. He would not want his death to be in vain. Leave his body or you will betray his will." He tried to sound convincing and tremors ought to add to the gravity of the situation.

Thugnar even tried to pull Tabitha away from the body.

Bernard is the never do well second son of Count Dargolin, and has sent to manage his father’s estate in an out of the way village. In the counts words to stop him from getting into duels with other men all the times, especially not over the wenches.

Bernard looks at Bar “Welcome back can you move on your own or do you need assistance, we are in a real hurry, so let me know what will be faster, no point in dying over false pride.” He is heading down the hill trying to go straight for the ship, but not straying away from the others. If there is going to be another attack, they will need their combined forces

Obraun stuffs the handle of the flail into his belt as he moves over to the scene around Alphonse. He bends down and tries to lift Alphonse over his shoulder. He looks at Tabitha as he does.

Run you fool woman get to the ship!

He groans with the effort and realizes he is not going to make it while carrying Alphonse. He stumbles over to the edge and heaves Alphonse's body over the side and down to the bottom of the ramp so they can pick it up once they get there.

Tabitha

Half-heartedly fighting Thugnar and Obraun, Tabitha finally relented as Alphonse was unceremoniously tossed off the ziggurat. She seemed to snap out of her fugue state at the action. "Wh-HEY! Be careful with my boy!" she hollered, furrowing her brow. She started running with the others as fast as she could now.

The words of her fellow villagers rang in her mind. She was being utterly foolish, but there was nothing left for her without him. How could she go on? What meaning was there to life?

If no one go to his body first, Tabitha again tried to drag him away alone.

ESCAPING THE TEMPLE

Obraun drags Alphonse's body to the edge of the ziggurat's top tier and quickly sees that he can't simply drop the boy's corpse to the bottom of the ramp because of the stepped structure of the temple. He pushes it over the edge, and it plummets thirty feet to the tier below. Luckily, Tabitha is spared from seeing the aftermath of that.

By the time any of you reach the next tier down, you're running for your lives. Rocks rain down from the cavern ceiling ranging from the size of your fist to the size of a cow. The largest piece - a stalactite as big as a building - falls onto the Ziggurat and annihilates the entire northwestern corner of it.

Before you reach it, Alphonse's body becomes buried under a mound of fallen stones and shattered bricks, surrounded by a moat of burning lava.

You keep running, pushing Tabitha along with you. By that point, Hugo is awake and has realized that the dagger meant for his throat actually struck his grandfather's lucky amulet, which he'd forgotten he was wearing. The amulet had been driven hard into his neck, but he'll likely recover in a few days. At any rate, the halfling can run, and he does.

You reach the black sand of the beach only to find that your fellow villagers are nowhere to be seen. For a brief and terrifying moment, you think they might have taken the Dragon Ship and abandoned all of you here. But no, the Dragon Ship waits where you left it. Where are the villagers? You simply don't know. They must have found another way off the island.

The beastmen are on their knees, praying to their dark gods while the world falls apart around them. You ignore them and run to the Dragon Ship.

INTO THE UNKNOWN

You all clamber aboard the Dragon Ship and use your spears to shove off from the dock. Only before the ship can begin to make its way back to the menhir, a forked bolt of emerald lightning blows the Ziggurat apart.

Thousands of tons of stone crash down into the Starless Sea, and the Dragon Ship is swept away in a great wave, hurtling farther out into the cavern. You can do nothing but hang on for your lives. Some of you don't even manage that. In the thunder and spray, you lose track of how many go overboard. You may never know their fate.

The Dragon Ship is tossed about like a toy as the wave takes you farther from the menhir. Further from your way home!

The air seems to tear open. One moment you're looking out at the awesome immensity of the cavern, lit by hundreds of tongues of lightning. The next, you're looking at the countless stars of an open sky. The energies of Chaos are ripping reality apart.

You lose all bearing. You feel weightless, and for a moment, all you can see is the swirling pandemonium of the Phlogiston.

The Dragon Ship and all of you are thrown violently into the unknown.

There is no telling where you might land
.
