APPEARANCE

Age 25 | Height 5' 9" | Weight 135 lbs. | Hair Silver | Eyes Brown | Complexion Fair

Cael is a male of average height, and just seems to have an aura that makes people like him. He's got a striking look that makes you remember him, though, not in a bad way. He's not much of a talker, he often has his whole face in a book, where most will stop at the nose. And yet, he doesn't give off the air of a typical stuffy academic. Even if he had attracted bullies from the ranks of the less mentally capable, he'd always been a very resilient boy. Once he fell out of a third story window and emerged with nothing more than some dirty clothes. In his more recent years, this lead to an interest in getting tattoos, as while they did hurt, he found the sensation almost novel and refreshing after most of his life avoiding anything worse than a scrape or two.

He doesn't dress flashily, he has no real need to, especially these days. Cael wears mostly black as a sign of mourning the death of his master, something he intends to do until he has avenged her passing. He carries her still blood stained tome on his back, and fills it with his own spells that he encounters, as both a tribute to her, as well as perhaps one of them holds the key to defeating whatever is behind all this. He carries some knives more for utility than fighting, preferring to rely on his magic in combat above anything else.

BACKGROUND

Sage
Source PHB

  • Personality Traits: I'm willing to listen to every side of an argument before I make my own judgment.
  • Ideals: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge. (Neutral)
  • Bonds: I have an ancient text that holds terrible secrets that must not fall into the wrong hands.
  • Flaws: I am easily distracted by the promise of information.

Background Feature: Specialty (Wizard's Apprentice)

Researcher

When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of lore, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a sage or other learned person or creature. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found. Unearthing the deepest secrets of the multiverse can require an adventure or even a whole campaign.

BACKSTORY

Cael Vellewyn grew up in United Lestoru, the son of an affluent merchant family. Not wealthy enough to try to have ever been made nobility, but firmly upper middle class. Their family has been making Silver Stream Ale for generations, and it has delighted many a palette. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, though they will jokingly reassure new customers that there is no actual silver in the alcohol. If there was, it would be a lot more expensive!

From a young age, Cael had seemed to have an inkling for magic, able to read and kind of magical text, no matter the language. He loved learning about the arcane and planned to get accepted to the Resplendent Scroll University, and cheering on the Lightning Bolts at any Stormrally match that he could make. Eventually, he reached the age where he could apply to the school. His combination of study and good charm got him accepted into the school in about the middle of the pack. He wasn't the brightest pupil in his class, but he wasn't the dimmest either. After a couple years of studying there, he began the next phase of his education, getting apprenticed to a more senior wizard. In his case, Lucilly Farrom. She wasn't a specialist of a particular school, instead a member of the Order of Scribes. She was the most bookish person that Cael had ever met, and that was saying something, as all wizards were quite bookish to begin with.

He spent a further two years under her tutelage, learning as much as he could from her. However, in the last few months, she had become troubled, not sleeping well. She wouldn't talk much about it, and kept assigning him duties that would keep him away from her. Lucilly became more easily agitated due to the lack of sleep, and seemed paranoid about something, though, she would not say what. After a couple weeks of this, she announced that she would be leaving on an assignment, and that Cael would stay at the University and continue his studies. Cael didn't like this decision at all, with how sleep deprived and addled she had become, the only place she should have been venturing was her bed.

A few days after she left, Cael started getting an unpleasant dream himself. It was the same one that had visited his master, not that he'd known that at the time. After the fourth night of waking up in a cold sweat after getting his death proclaimed at him, he looked around his room, and saw an unusual sight on his writing desk. It was his master's spellbook, though splattered in blood. The fact that it was here and she clearly wasn't was a bad sign. Cael hurried over to it, having seen Lucilly talk to the book before, perhaps it could tell him what happened.

When he picked it up, knowledge flooded his mind. She had been experiencing the same nightmare as him. In looking into the phenomena, she had died. Tears started to run down his cheeks from the knowledge of her passing as images continued to fill his brain. The book was binding itself to him, but in a wholly different way. While his master was gone to the afterlife, she had imbued her energy into the book that now hovered in front of him. It washed away all his arcane training, as that had not been enough to stop this impending threat. It was replaced with magic given to him from the heavens by Lucilly's ascended spirit and another, unexpected source. Lucilly had encountered his mother on the Upper Planes, and while she couldn't say exactly who his mother was, both of them had combined their power to give him this bond to give him the best chance to succeed. The woman who had given him his resilient body was apparently some kind of celestial, and he was being infused with her might in a different way now.

The book told him that it would help Cael ward off this influence while he prepared his things to take up the mantle where his mentor had fallen. The former apprentice was then told get to Baromenes. In the intervening days, Cael found he had no need for sleep, and since he didn't sleep, the specters of that dream couldn't reach him. It was a little bit of an adjustment not sleeping, being awake continuously did make him a little more unhinged. Still, it was better than being repeatedly assaulted by that nightmare each time he put his head down.

His newly acquired book had come with an amulet in it like a bookmark. It seemed a bit pointless, given that the book was empty. But when he picked it up and examined it, something struck him, and he has a sliver of a young memory of his mother possibly wearing something like this before she disappeared from their lives. Putting it on, he could feel it start to focus the arcane energy that had poured into his body. He no longer needed a spellbook to memorize spells, they were burned into his psyche. However, he found that he could sometimes pull other cantrips from the amulet if he could remember them from his wizard days. Before heading out, he stocked up on some gear, and found a good deal on a staff said to increase one's magical power. The last 6 owners had died while still holding it, leading the shop owner to think it was cursed, and was practically giving it away. With a laugh borne from the sleep deprivation he was still recovering from, he took the supposedly cursed rod, and gave the woman a few coins anyways. He took a bit of time back in his room to get used to the book and other new gear, before heading out on this journey his master's death had set him on.

Hey there! Nope everything seems to be in order, love the backstory and tying in of the magic items into your backstory and the mysteriousness around your master's disappearance. Ill mark this as completed and of course, if you want to change anything feel free to before the deadline! Just give me a heads up 😛

Hey, just saw in your announcement that we are supposed to run our Uncommon magic items by you, and I did select a Rod of the Pact Keeper +1 as one of them.

I assume it's cool since you've already said I was good to go, but just want to be safe.

Since I have established it may be cursed/unlucky, I'm fine with you having some fun with that if I get selected.
