Using higher lvl TL items than your base

So you just bought this cool TL 9 laser gun, tested it in the shop, showed you how to fire it and load you, watch the sale alien all fine, took it home, and then tried to load the ammo how did it go again? Your sure you watch the guy but why does it keep falling out> and what does this red light flashing mean?

So it's not so easy to buy/find a high-tech item and just start using it without any issues. Even when you're shown, does that mean if anything wrong you know how to overcome any problems, even the simplest one? Nope.
So these rules apply to anything that has higher level tech than you base or current.

It's like taking a iphone back to the dark ages and asking them to use it, that's like what it's like for you lot. Just think how hard old people have with tech in ONE generation never mind 10(each TL is between 100-300 years of advancement)

To turn on or off/use you need to make a DC 15 knowledge Tech check with a -5 for every tech level above the level above your own. You can take 10 if not in a stressful situation.

If it is tech not from your setting or race, the DC starts at 30 and then the -5 is applied. For the humans on the ship pretty much everything is alien tech, but they can ask to get to design for them at a 25% upgrade fee if on the Captail Station or other high-tech place.

If you have someone within line of sight that has the item's TL, they can direct you to use it swift or immediate action with no roll needed, but can only help 1 person at a time.

If someone can talk you through the operation but not in a line of sight they can reduce the penalty by 5 as a move action.

Knowledge(Tech) d20 and PF

Engineering(SF)

Those skills are the ones that you use to try to use tech above your TL.
