Feats

RIPOSTE: the feat is from the video game Asheron’s Call 2 and was converted in Dragon Magazine 304 (later reprinted in Dragon Compendium). The article explicitly states that the feats presented are available to characters from Dereth (the setting of Asheron’s Call 2). So yeah, you want to play a character from that setting? Fine, you can take the feat.

KARMIC STRIKE: the feat is also called ai uchi and is from Oriental Adventures (later reprinted in Complete Warrior). It is listed as a martial arts feat in that book. It is a maneuver taught to samurai in real world feudal Japan to ensure mutual death. It is also part of the martial art kendo. Gaining access to this feat for non-Oriental Adventures characters should not be easy.

ROBILAR’S GAMBIT: even though this feat originated in Greyhawk, it, like many Greyhawk spells, has spread far and wide. It is also the most balanced of the three feats and has high entry requirements. It is also a stance, so couldn’t be used with other stances. The penalties it gives are against anyone who strikes at you, the implication being that this applies to all attacks, including ranged and touch attacks. NOTE: If you find this feat overpowered (and I’d wait until I saw it used in game), then apply the following: since the trigger is when an opponent swings, any attack that doesn’t involve swinging doesn’t provoke (but still gains the bonuses vs you).

Also, RAW states that what counts as a single trigger for AoO is broad, not narrow. In other words, you’d only get one AoO against an opponent with multiple attacks, and you only provoke once while moving with a creature’s large threatened area (we messed up on that one).

In summary, one of these feats is basically impossible to get, another is hard to find a teacher for, and the last is actually very balanced when you remember what constitutes a single AoO trigger.

So here is a table I and my GM use to figure out tech levels of societies. Now in D20 future it says that it assigned one tech level across the board but that is never the case, so this should give you an idea about where races are based on the tech you find out or know they have.
Tech Levels -4 (Stone Age), -3 (Bronze/Iron Ages), -2 (Middle Ages), -1 (Age of Reason), 0 (Industrial Age), 1 (Information Age), 2 (Fusion Age), 3 (Gravity Age), 4 (Energy Age), 5+ (Pure fiction…)
