Ascending the stairs to the second floor, you are greeted by a slight breeze carrying an earthy scent and sounds of the wilderness, before emerging within the familiar ruin of a crumbling watchtower covered in creeping ivy. Despite its manmade appearance, this place is a fixed part of the dungeon - the surrounding forest never encroaching on its clearing. The stones looming over you form a distinct landmark that is easily visible from a distance, and a useful reference for adventurers.

A stone road from the clearing leads directly toward your destination, but also into the area Lex warned you about.

While familiar to most, this area ( and the tower as a whole ) was new to Vahn; it was his first excursion, or incursion, after all. He noted the tall landmark that loomed high in this place where nature seemed to avoid, as though the very ground was not earth or soil but of some other facsimile substance, or that the stone facade crept deeper-still than the eye could see.

"If I understood correctly, the shortest path is indeed the most dangerous - considering the fact that a request stands between us and the mines," Vahn seemed to weigh their options with an air of nonchalance, as if none of these things were even the least-bit abrasive to his resolve.

"From where I stand, we could discard caution and somehow deal with or circumvent the threat in the Graveyard, we could go the long way around, or we could even wait for the other party and assist them while on our way to the mines," while he wasn't a fan of standing around, he had to admit to himself that marching through a hornets nest with some of the Guild's finest would feel quite innervating.

Vahn turned to the others with him, to Markus, Olenna & Myria.

He'd much rather avoid revisiting that area and take the Gnarled Woods instead.

"Let's go through the Gnarled Wood, its a shortcut." Markus says to the team as he points his thumb over his shoulder to the winding trails. Whether or not that was true could be debated, but he didn't think anyone would question the cartographer in the group any further about it.

You venture deeper into the wood, following paths that twist and turn without rhyme or reason. The ancient trees create a dense canopy overhead, casting shadows that dance and sway with each gust of wind. The forest is strangely quiet despite the wildlife, and there is a nagging sense you are being watched.

There are four tasks your party must overcome to reach the ruins safely; one for each adventurer. All tasks are against +2 difficulty.

It wasn't his first woodland traipse, though it was by far the strangest.

Never had he walked a wood so dense that it seemed a maze, perhaps, even as a cavern of hard dirt and gnarled root where the roof was a glittering mirage of verdant growth that shifted lethargic to a soundless wind. Even were he not forewarned of the goblin dens strewn about this area, one could not help but feel the ominous eye of an unwanted onlooker.

Before setting forth, Vahn had placed his palms together and lowered his head in some form of prayer; those attuned to forces not of this world might have felt the presence of something else appear around his person.

"Let us move forward in silence.. I do not like these trees.." Vahn led a careful way, heeding the others when there was mention of aught he might have missed, for he was focused on secrecy. He was not certain if his visions of the dens ahead were current, ancient or future, he could only trust that it would serve them for the better.

spacer.pngAs Vahn lead them in silence through the underbrush, taking care in his steps that they not be seen, Myria busied herself with seeing those that could harm them, whether trap or foe.

She started pulling swords out of her sheath, leaving them in the air where they hung, following her as she kept the pace. Through their steel thrummed her life energy, and from their reverberations she felt the world more keenly.

With both sword and sight, hearing, smell, and guts, she swept her attention around their leafy surroundings, seeking to find snares and pitfalls, to cut them before they could snatch them, or to warn her companions away from them.

Notice Challenge

Myria spends a Fate point to declare the story detail that Myria can feel through her swords. She then successfully creates an advantage using this detail and Fight, Sensing with Swords, to help with detecting traps and removing or avoiding them.

She then attempts the Notice challenge. It ends with a tie but she uses her advantage to succeed.

Olenna holds up a fist at the sound of an approaching patrol, then silently urges everyone off the path and into the undergrowth - narrowly avoiding a dozen goblins. Only afterwards do you feel something tugging at your clothes and pricking the skin. Your eyes focus in the dim light, and discover yourselves hidden among brambles with sharp crimson barbs.

"Gallowbrush" mutters Vahn in disgust. You recall it now - also known as Sleeptooth, for the thorny briar has a lethargic effect on anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in it. There is a growing drowsiness, and you fight your way free of the bramble. Despite the minor setback, your combined expertise leads you from the gnarled wood without alerting its denizens.

You are in a large clearing filled with tumbledown structures in a variety of shapes and sizes. Wooden beams creak under the weight of neglect, and ivy creeps along the weathered stone walls - but these desolate remnants are just another part of the dungeon, fixed in time. Were you to attempt altering it without spells, you would later find everything returned to its rightful place... which is why the mines here are considered so valuable.

The area is deserted - the gatekeepers had mentioned another party bound for the mines, but there are no signs of their presence. They must have passed through quite a while ago. This seems as good a place as any to rest for a moment, before venturing into the dark underground.

"..the tower is indeed a fascinating place.." it was strange to look up beyond the forgotten stones and through the dense canopies, up to those facsimile skies and know that they were false, for they stood within a structure, though one so alien that it defied all common laws.

Vahn looked over his companions, each having played a part through the Gnarled Wood; he had thanked Olenna for taking them off the path, for in his subterfuge, he had yet to notice the patrol that had found its way behind them.

Markus had proved his namesake, for the twists and turns taken had sown a shade of doubt until the ruins reached; he gave the cartographer a knowing nod and a hand-gesture that was, to his knowledge, a sign of approval.. or something vulgar; he wasn't sure.

Myria's manipulation of steel was curious indeed, almost as if she had taken the concept of the sword being an extension of one's self to a literal extreme. Vahn counted the number of hilts within her scabbard "I mean no disrespect, but is there a trick to your ability?; does your touch extend to other weapons or items?; what of those held by an opponent?;.." while the dangers of their delve were yet to be overcome, there was a moment of respite for each; Vahn spent his mending curiosities.

You can also exchange any free invokes received for both a skill at Average (+1) and a 1- point stress box for your animated being. If an animated being has multiple skills at Average (+1), they can be combined to increase their power, as can stress boxes. So, if you exchange two free invokes, you can receive one Skill at Fair (+2) or two skills at Average (+1), along with one 2-point stress box or two 1- point stress boxes.

In Tandem: When someone targets your animated creature with a physical attack, and you and your animated creature are in the same zone, you may defend against that attack in place of your animated creature.

spacer.pngMyria was a bit discomfited by the stings of the Sleeptooth--- the sleepiness that it brought could chip at their awareness at an opportune moment--- but she supposed for the most part, that had been the only downside of their trek so far.

The ruins were quite a sight, and it seemed they defied explanation--- how such biomes and structures remained, unchanging, within the innards of the tower. Truly mysterious.

Vahn would notice that even though there were four swords already floating in the air by Myria's side, the number of hilts in the sheath did not seem to have decreased.

"A trick?" Myria echoed, and then laughed. "Well, I suppose it isn't exactly something everyone could do. I practiced and used swords a lot, and at some point I felt I could... put my energy into them? It's hard to put into words."

"My ability mostly deals with swords, so if it's someone else's sword, I could definitely try snatching it out of their hand!" she proclaimed, even as she let out a mischievous telekinetic tug at Olenna's rapier, not enough to take it out of her possession but just enough to catch her attention. "Other things... well, I've tried, but it gets a lot harder the less like a sword the thing I'm trying to fiddle with is."

"So, just how many swords can you... do whatever you're doing at the same time?" Markus asked curiously, not knowing exactly what to call it, perhaps levitate or animate came to mind but he'd already posed the question.

"Vahn, what's your gimmick? Everyone's got one it seems." He says as he looks at Vahn expectedly, as if he would throw a fireball with his hands or something the like as a demonstration upon demand.
