Backstory

When one reaches the end of their life, especially if it was one as exciting as mine, they start to think a great deal on the things they have done. Their accomplishments, the friends they made and lost, and even their regrets. Here, I will pen an abridged version of what shall later become my autobiography. The final installment will mostly likely be a best selling three volume set, but for the sake of my own notes, I'll keep this brief.

A great many cliché stories start with tragic upbringings that molded them into the person they were for the rest of their lives. My childhood was quite tame in comparison. I wasn't ostracized for being a Half Elf, if anything, people found me quite charming from a young age. My father, Ettrian, was an Elven musician. His long life allowed him to spend centuries mastering his arts. Music was something of an obsession to him, one that did shape quite a bit of who I am. I had always been surrounded by music and stories, which is perhaps why I became so well known for them myself. My mother was an incredible woman. In her short life she had been the head of a thieves' guild, was a dab hand at magic, and left all of that behind to raise me, the one who would become the most interesting man in the worlds. To this day I still lean on some of her more long lived associates, which I think goes to show how influential she really was.

My story truly begins with Strixhaven. There is little in this world I love more than stories. I had a thirst for knowledge that perhaps borders on obsession, I still do. I was admitted at the age of sixteen, rather young but I was a somewhat precocious youth. I won't bore you with the details of my studies, but they were vast and varied. The knowledge contained within those walls was an ocean, and I intended to drink every drop. That was part of the reason I ended up as Loremaster. Strixhaven opened my eyes to an array of worlds which existed beyond my own, and I was destined to one day walk them. If I had to give a single claim to fame during my tenure there, it would have to be the party that burned down the eastern hall. Yes, the building was stone. Yes, people were injured. And Yes, it was to this day, still the greatest social gathering the college has ever seen. The final details of this section are where my life starts to get spicy, but I cannot do any of that justice here, so you'll have to read the unabridged version.

Like any magical know-it-all. I then spent a time as an adventurer. I was a member of a group known as 'The Iron Rings', a moniker we came up with after deciding we would all wear iron bands to mark us as members. We were rather successful. We were credited with exploring the ruins of the floating castle Locthwain. We defeated the Balduvian Hydra (that was all thanks to me, I might add). And we even captured a noble attempting to assassinate the royal family of Eldraine. It was this last thing that ended up being the end of the Iron Rings. While my compatriots all chose monetary rewards, I instead offered my services as court adviser. Adventuring can be a lot of fun, but those that don't give up the profession when the time is right often ending up dying in a bog in the middle of nowhere with no one to mourn them.

Over the next few decades, I grew quite close to the queen of Eldraine. So close in fact, that I convinced her that her husband the king was holding her back. Together we pulled off a most marvelous coup, all without spilling a single drop of blood. Apparently court adviser to king isn't such an unimaginable jump after all, is it Thadwick? While it was filled with a level of luxury the word 'opulent' doesn't even do justice to, the life of a king is actually fairly boring. About two decades later, the exiled king returned to reclaim his throne. That was an interesting time and a rather bloody one. Could I have put down the rebellion? Of course! I'd build a spy network so vast it spanned worlds upon worlds. But it was then I realized what a great story having the exiled king return would be, and how it would get me out of some of my more tedious duties. And since I'd taken credit for the orchestration the previous king's exile, the queen was seen as a victim of circumstance and remained queen while I was thrown into prison. I've since heard the throne has been handed to a new High King, Algenus Kenrith.

I want to say prison doesn't agree with me, but as I sit here drinking an exquisite wine from Eladamri's vineyard, I find it rather hard to complain. This seclusion has allowed me time to focus on myself, and start writing again, which has been a glorious thing since my plays, novels, and poems over the last twenty years have been more popular than ever. Apparently going to jail for usurping a crown has the same effect on one's reputation as dying in the literary world, who knew? But even this is starting to grow tedious, so I suspect sometime in the next few years I'll take my leave of this place. Have one final adventure, or make one final masterpiece to cement my name as a man of legend.

~ Savion Silvertongue, An excerpt from 'Songs of Silver, an autobiography of the most interesting man in the worlds'

Appearance

Savion stood with pursed lips as he stared at the painting. He'd been modeling for weeks, and the finished product had finally come. The royal court painter, Heneth, stood in silence wringing his hands as Savion made a final assessment. "I must admit Heneth, you've done an excellent job of capturing the silver color of my hair. The detail on my braids is quite exquisite as well."

"I'm told my lord will will be eighty seven years old this year, you look to be in excellent shape."

Savion grinned. "Not only am I the product of excellent upbringing, but my lineage has been quite advantageous in that regard. My father was Elven, after all." He crossed his arms, causing several  golden bangles to jingle merrily. Heneth looked surprised, the man's eyes instantly going to Savion's rounded ears. The soon to be coronated king chuckled. "Not all Half Elves share those particular features my good man. I'm very lucky to take after my mother in that way."

"Apologies for assuming it is as you say, my lord."

"Indeed..." The painting was actually very good, though it reminded him of how old he'd actually gotten. He'd always taken a great deal of pride in his look, it was one that he had crafted meticulously to looks as though he just naturally woke up handsome. But one could could certainly notice if they knew what to look for. The well oiled and scented beard, the perfectly trimmed moustache that flared ever so slightly upward at the ends. Even the beginnings of his laugh lines coming in seemed almost magically architected to give him a more youthful exuberance than his years belied. What Savion loved most about the painting was the eyes. They were the lightest of blues, like a lightning storm behind ocean mist. Despite being eighty seven this year, his eyes retained the same sharpness they always had, with a look that perpetually said 'I know something you don't, and it amuses me'.

Finally. Savion took a long sigh. "I do realize you're not going to paint me as some young muscled thing, but shouldn't I be doing something more regal than sitting in the study, perhaps riding a horse or something more noble?"

"The queen said it would be more charming to catch you in your um...normal element, Lord Savion."

Savion's lips curled into a devious smile. "I really don't think the queen's bedchambers is an appropriate place for a painting my good Heneth." Though it might make for a very good selling pennybook in the Lows. "All in all Heneth, this was most assuredly a monumental success. From one artist to another, I commend you!" The artist looked visibly relieved as Savion shook the man's hand and escorted him from the study.

With no more tasks for the moment, Savion sat in his favorite chair and continued to look at the painting. Heneth had even decided to paint him wearing his preferred style of clothing, variegated layers of light loose fabrics. It was something he'd picked up on a trip to the Hashep Oasis a few decades ago and simply fell in love with. The ones in the painting were of course all subtle variations of the color scheme of the Eldraine flag, but the painter had done a good job with the color compromise. "Well..." Savion said to himself. "I suppose it is time to go become a king."

Extra Scene

Note: I tend to like to write a lot from the character perspective to get a feel for who they are and what they are like, so this is just a bit of extra continuation from Underleaf's earlier part, as a bit of fun.

==============

Most of Savion's neighbors seemed content to wallow in the austere lifestyle that prison seemed to impose. They spoke little and thought less, only coming out to howl when something unattainable passed them by; and usually into Savion's waiting hands. The aged Half Elf leaned against the bars of his cell, puffing on a long pipe that sent plumes of pleasant scented smoke wafting into the hallway. This last month had been a great deal more interesting since his newest cellmate arrived. Lilith was a brigand for certain, one of those people who had been given more talent but less opportunity than most, and had squandered her time honing the more illicit skills that would eventually end her up...well, here. Despite that, there was a sharpness to her mind that he couldn't help but appreciate. Savion had started talking to himself years ago due to lack of intelligent conversation. "I'm glad it appeals to you, dear Lili. There is a special variety of chamomile that only grows on a world called Dominaria, and it produces the most heavenly aroma with skillful preparation; the rest is a secret I'm afraid. As for the book, I'm quite fond of that particular character myself. One might even say I have a thing for queens...or power. They very often are so intertwined there is no reason to make a discernable difference." A sly grin crossed his face, though she couldn't see it.

From down the hall a trio of men could be heard. The first other had very familiar footsteps, the warden. The second was a very loud mouth breather, clearly that was Dominik, one of the guards on this floor. It was the third, a man with an unfamiliar voice, that intrigued Savion. "-- stands on the brink warden, and I have come to recruit a hero. You've been called upon." Warden Greshaw only gave a grunt in reply. The newcomer continued his rhetoric until the pair stopped in front of Savion's cell. The warden thrust the ornate wooden box he was holding into Savion's waiting hand. "I was asked to deliver this to you personally by her majesty." He managed through gritted teeth. The elderly Half Elf's face lit up. "You have my thanks warden. I'll be certain to let her majesty know how kind you've been to me during her next visit!"

The newcomer stood frozen, unsure of the scene playing out in front of him. He looked to the warden, then the man behind  the bars. It wouldn't have done the room justice to call it a cell. There was a warmth to the room, a hominess that stood in stark contrast to the other darkened cells they had passed by. The walls were lined with books and scrolls, enough to be considered a library in some small cities. And the man was casually smoking a pipe while the woman in the next cell over sipped something fragrant from a teacup. "Is...this a...no, I have no idea what this is. What is this?"

"That's His Majesty, Savion Silvertongue." Dominik blurted out with a smile.

"I told you not to call him that." A man of few words, it was clear this man even more than the newcomer's pleas grated on him.

"Quite right Dominik!" Savion was quick to reply as he took another short puff on his pipe, then turned it over into a small silver ashtray that hung off the side of the bars. "A king that has abdicated is should technically be addressed by any previous titles he held. So Herald of the Ever-shifting Sands, Ranger of the Northern Seas of Ardnor, or even Loremaster would suffice. All that aside..." Savion stowed his pipe then cracked his knuckles through the bars as he leaned closer.

"I couldn't help but overhear you're in need of a hero. While Warden Greshaw certainly fits the bill, I would invite you to consider an alternative proposal. Your patron is clearly a powerful one, else you wouldn't be trying to woo so prestigious. But I would posit you've already gathered a host of able bodied warriors to your cause. What you need...is a sage. Someone with vast planar knowledge and wizened perspective. Someone with the connections and insight to not only make your heroes more effective, but exponentially so." Savion pushed off the bars and took a seat on one of the many massive pillows that dotted the floor of his cell.

The newcomer, Tobias found himself hanging off the man's words, despite his best efforts. "What was his crime?" He asked offhanded, as though actually entertaining the idea.

"Savion usurped the crown of Eldraine."

"I take offense to that warden! Twenty years is hardly usurpation, at that point it could be considered a reign. Not to mention I'd technically be classified as a political prisoner, since the king put me here. The queen had no such issues with me, we're still on rather friendly terms." Savion opened the wooden box, first inspecting a note. He smiled to himself as he read it. "Though, if you were going to seriously consider my offer, good sir. I would also invite you to include my comrade in the next cell: Lili. I'm certain she would proven useful in such an endeavor."

"And her crime?" Tobias found himself saying, now to curious not to ask.

"Assassin." Greshaw muttered.

"Such a dirty word for the world's second oldest profession!  It would seem to me that having one of her skillset would be quite the boon in eliminating your enemies. And she is highly talented, from what I've heard. You'd be coming back with not one capable hero, but two."

Tobias realized his mouth had been hanging agape as he stood, almost stupefied. He found himself slightly worried that the man's words made a certain sort of sense, and he did seem to have the criteria they were looking for. "Could my patron convince you to release one or both of them into my care in your stead warden?"

Gershaw shook his head in disbelief. Had this just happened? Then a realization struck him and he smiled wickedly. "Mr. Tobias was it? I'd be more than happy to sign them over to you, on the condition Savion Silvertongue is never incarcerated here again." If he played his cards right, he wouldn't have to keep playing postal service for the queen.

"On that my dear Gershaw, we can both agree. This has been a lovely time, but I do think a change of scenery is in order."
