"A tool is something one uses to effect change on the world. Magic is a tool. So is gold, so is pure stubborn will. How fortunate I don't have to rely on only one of those."

Appearance

Demerious is a fairly typical representative of the men of Brevoy, predominately Taldan in ancestry, dark haired, a bit paler than most perhaps and inevitably well groomed and well dressed. He could easily be described as handsome, though most folks find him vaguely unsettling somehow, a bit distant, perhaps even cold. Others might mention a certain air of smug superiority.

Personality

Distant and slightly smug is a fair approximation of his attitude towards most people. It's only fair, compared to him, most people really ARE idiots. Nothing wrong with that, really, some people are thinkers, others are workers or fighters or whatever and a functional society needs all sorts. It's just hard not to feel a bit superior when you see people struggling with concepts that come easily to you. Now taking unfair advantage of that, that would be wrong. And that is the real key to understanding Demerious. He truly wants to do what's right. Right as he understands it being the greatest benefit for the greatest number of people. Of course, if he can benefit a little more, nothing wrong with that, he is due the fruits of his labor, well ability anyhow, labor doesn't seem an apt term for most of what he does after all. He is a devoted follower of Abadar, he will always consider increasing law and civilization as benefit, with increasing trade being nearly as important.

Demerious is a serious sort, but he does have his moments of fun. He appreciates a good play on words, especially if if it crosses language boundaries somehow. He's not particularly good at them himself, though he will try now and then, but he does enjoy them. He also enjoys the finer arts, music, drama, literature, sculpture, etc, they are the fruit of civilization after all.

Demerious regards the idea of an expedition to clear bandits from the River Kingdoms and open trade routes as nearly a holy mission. Add in the potential opportunity to found a new nation and well, he has theories about how a nation should be run, the opportunity to put some of them into practice is far too good to pass up. Not that he has any intention of being the ruler himself, not really, he'd be perfectly happy as the advisor whispering in the ruler's ear, especially if the ruler is smart enough to listen. Yeah, he'd love being the power behind the throne.

Background

Demerious's grandfather was a cousin of the Lebeda Lord of the time. Having made the mistake of being more successful than his lordly cousin in wooing a woman they were both interested in and then compounding that mistake with a drunken fight, he was disowned and stripped of his right to any family titles, though he was left with significant holdings and technically a sort of noble status. He took the surname Lake and set about putting the past behind him. Fortunately for him, though some of his relatives were rather hot tempered, none were the sort to hang onto a grudge too hard. The trade advantages of having the ear of nobility without many of the restrictions were not insignificant and the Lake family prospered.

Demerious grew up quite wealthy and knowing various members of the Lebeda family as slightly distant cousins. His native intelligence and gift for magic brought him to the attention of the court mage, Rossilion. A formal apprenticeship eventually followed, as his family was unwilling to send him off to one of the great academies. Remaining near home while studying magic meant he was still surrounded by and learning from traders.

Notes/Plans/Thoughts

The basic idea is for a fairly support oriented wizard, focusing on buff/debuff spells and using primarily cantrips for damage. A reasonably standard PF wizard then. Current plan is to use the Loremaster and Eldritch Researcher Archetypes for a bit of extra magic and a highly flexible knowledge base. We'll see how that goes. With high intelligence he's a fairly obvious Magister or Spymaster but his background and training suit him very well for Treasurer.

With a lawful, group oriented bent, he will get along well with most characters. Extreme chaotics will not go over well and outright evil will be met with suspicion at the very least and probably strong opposition unless lawful and reasonably restrained. Otherwise, most differences will be met with polite disagreement and hopefully some discussion at the local tavern.
