Detailed Description

BAD THINGS COME IN THREES

Years ago, you had come to Coswegotch University for a job, but it did not take long for this to become your home. Sure, Harvard was known for being more prestigious and, yes, Yale was lauded for academic innovations made in recent years. Of course, Miskatonic was recognized for its libraries of antiquarian volumes but in your opinion none of them held a candle to Coswegotch.  One of the oldest institutes of higher learning in the Northeast, Coswegotch University, and its picturesque town of Babylon, were situated between Oneida Lake to the east and the much larger Lake Ontario to the west.

Once a venerable institution, it fell out of favor among the elite and wealthy of upstate New York, but this has begun to change recently. New professors have been attracted and additional courses of study have been added. Big investments, such as expanding the collection of the Whitmore Museum and Research Repository as well as the construction of the Murray P. Grayson Gymnasium, have many thinking that Coswegotch will soon be competing with the more well-known universities.

There was no one happier with all this progress than Professor Antonius Gellman. A fixture of Coswegotch for over forty years, most recently in the role of the Whitmore Museum Director, he was respected and liked by all. Being his friend, you were happy to hear him announce his retirement some months back and were looking forward to the party his wife had planned. All of this made the news of his passing three days ago just that much harder.

The wake had begun an hour ago and you were running late. Taking a quick look in the mirror to make sure all was proper you hurried to get there before it ended. As you walked to the campus chapel you had no way of knowing that soon your eyes would be opened to a terrible reality that swam beneath the one you knew. One of ancient powers and unheard-of horrors, one that any sane person would beg to forget.

You had no way of knowing paying your respects to your friend would be the first step on a path that led to madness.

  1. What's new in this game
  2. I'm still interested. If play resumes, I'm in. If not, it was a fun opening chapter.
  3. It's been almost a month of inactivity. I've a fading interest in this campaign. I'll just spectate from this point if anything further happens. Christa Linda is just a glorified meat shield anyway. LOL Regardless, I wish everyone good luck in their future endeavors, gaming and otherwise.
  4. Great news and glad to hear. I will work to post this weekend before heading out on vacation for a week or aso
  5. I'm sorry I have been MIA again. Good news tho -- the cancer hasn't spread in my friend! Very fortunate we caught this early. High spirits but not out of the woods yet. Still gotta get the surgery and what not. Also: We're attending an event over the holiday weekend here in the states. I'll try and get a post up one of these mornings. 🙃
  6. After his shout and sudden retreat, Edmund rallies at the cell door. Gazing fixedly at dry traces of what had been a human body, the professor speaks softly, as if to himself. "Memento homo, quod cinis es, et in cinerem reverteris."
  7. It was perhaps lucky that the University had entered break and few were on campus, for anyone walking into the security office at that moment would likely have started shouting for help. Even if one were to ignore the flapping of wings and barking of dogs, there was a palatable energy in the air. A nervous, almost frantic sense that would set anyone walking in on edge just as it had many already in the room. Chief Williams was waving away the helping hand being offered by Tobey, himself a little shaken by seeing the odd corpse in the cell but not falling apart as the security officer had. “Oh, just horrible. Horrible,” he repeated as he got to his feet wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and leaning on Tobey for a moment. It was clear as he walked past the desk with the pile of clothes folded on top of it, a pair of shoes and wallet laying atop them all, that the chief was still addled by what he had seen. “I need to report this. No sense using the phone though,” he called out to Herman who was shouting into the phone, asking for the operator over and over even though she had already connected, answered him then disconnected as he babbled randomly into the mouthpiece. “Police are all out dealing with that accident, no one will be able to be sent over for some time. Have to go tell them, get this reported.” Whether it was the motion outside the cell as Tobey stood to look after Chief Williams or the pressure of air from one of Christa Linda’s dogs barking right outside the iron bars, the body under Edmund’s curious examination crumbled in a sudden collapse of dust and small grey bits. Staggering back, Edmund avoided breathing in the wispy cloud of what had once been a man. In the ensuing confusion from Edmund’s shout and the realization as to why, Chief Williams calmly grabbed his coat, walked past Herman who was still shouting into his phone and out the door muttering about the importance of reporting this to the police. This left Tobey and Christa, those who were not caught up fully in the happenings of this drab, simple office, to wonder just what was going on. OOC So Chief Williams is obviously in the throes of some kind of mania from what he saw and Edmund is caught in his own obsession. There are stacks of papers and notes on one desk, clothes on the other and a pile of dust on the cot of the cell.
  8. Go ahead and post because I think Herman freaking out at the phone is a good reaction to a bad San roll anyway. haha
  9. I was giving a little extra time to to respond/post given what they shared but I will post tomorrow either way.
  10. Hit Points: 10/10 | Luck: 35/35 | Sanity: 65/65 Location: Campus Security Office | Conditions/Effects: None "Mr. Loggins," Christa Linda began, her voice carrying a sense of urgency despite her rambling nature. "You see, I have this rather peculiar problem that I've been grappling with lately. It's about these fines I've been receiving from the authorities," she continued, her words tumbling out in a stream of consciousness. She gestured animatedly with her hands as she spoke, her gaze occasionally flitting to the locked cell where the prisoner was held. "You see, it's all about permits and proper restraint for my animals," she explained, her tone betraying a hint of frustration. "But the thing is, I've always had my pets by my side, and it's never been an issue before. Now, it's becoming quite the nuisance, especially with all these fines piling up." Christa Linda paused briefly, allowing Mr. Loggins to absorb her words before continuing with her rambling narrative. "I mean, I've tried to comply with their regulations, but it just seems like they keep finding something new to nitpick about. It's rather exasperating, to say the least," she added with a small sigh, her brow furrowing in concern. Meanwhile, the commotion near the campus security office went unnoticed by Christa Linda, her attention fully consumed by her own musings and the conversation with Mr. Loggins. She remained oblivious to the retching, gasping, and speechless reactions of the men nearby, her focus solely on finding a solution to her own predicament.
  11. He is, right outside the cell, but go ahead and gice me a roll as Tobey will be right there more or less and human nature being what it is will probably look to see whats going on.
  12. Tobey went to check the chief, who I thought was outside of the cell.
  13. Herman and Tobey. I see Herman already rolled (and failed) so no need to reroll.
  14. Thant's a shame to hear. Hope that it turns out to be treatable and manageable.
  15. Tobey hurriedly walks over to the chief and pats him on the back. "What is it, sir? What happened?"
  16. The game's moving at a nice relaxed paced so probably not majorly relevant: but my posting may slow a bit. Found out a friend has cancer and will be taking any chances I get to spend time with them and help them out. We're still in the early stages and she doesn't know how serious a case is but if I'm MIA please be patient. I'll try to keep my regular pace up.
  17. HP: 11/11 SAN: 25/25 LUCK: 50/50 IDEA: 85 KNOW: 80 Taking in the scene, Herman steps backwards and look towards the cell feeling his body turn on the flight response making it very hard to walk towards that direction. He quickly moves over to the closest phone in the room and fumbles the receiver. "Operator! Hello, hello?!" OOC:
  18. Edmund* gasps and takes a half-step back, shuddering. But then he crosses himself and that seems to steady his nerves. "Horrible! What could have done this?" Professor Seagrave, seized with morbid curiosity, takes advantage of Chief William's bout of sickness to kneel for a closer look at the corpse, in particular the massive wound in the cheek and the empty eye sockets. Over his shoulder, he calls out, ''Gentlemen, I think you had best keep the lady well clear of this cell. But if you feel up to it, come in and see. I warn you, the poor fellow is... deceased." *OOC I made a typo, upthread!
  19. Passing by Chief Williams - who was too busy holding his head in the pail to notice - Edward did his best to ignore the sound and smell of vomit. The holding cell he entered was small, intended for the occasional drunk back when alcohol was still available around campus. Besides the cot, which was occupied for the moment, there was a small wood bench attached to the far end of the cell, opposite the door. The professor made his way around the cot so as to get a look at the prisoner, concerned something was wrong based on the chief of campus security’s reaction. He was brought up short as he found what he had been seeking. If fate was kind, it may have softened the sight by hiding it in shadows, making Edward question if he was seeing what he thought he was. There was no such grace for the professor this day. The skin of the man on the cot was ash grey and split apart in lines, like the cracks that formed as mud dried out. That was overlooked though as Edward’s attention was fixated on the gaping hole where a cheek had once been, an empty void in the man’s face which was made only that much more gruesome by the dark eye sockets that were now just as empty. “By god, that can’t be…” Chief Williams said, his face lifted from the pail before it dipped back down, and he retched again.
