As his two companions joined him on the other side of narrow rock path, the warrior sighed in relief. "Ya had meh worried," he said with a laugh clapping Grommash on the back. "And then there's Kutaeg who makes it look pretty! Well, on ta the next challenge." Bhalgurn looked up the steep cliff they would now have to climb. In the increased gravity, this would be difficult. He was glad they had the rope.

Out from his backpack, Bhalgurn pulled out a full climbing kit, complete with harness, pitons, and a small hammer. "This one should be a little easier. I'll climb up, and should be able ta help pull the rest o' ya up behind me." Bhalgurn was methodical in setting up his climbing gear, double checking each knot and stringing pitons along his belt for easy access. Once complete, he had both Grommash and Kutaeg check his work. It might have been overkill, but falling from this cliff in this gravity would cause significant harm to, or could even kill, Bhalgurn. Once ready, he nodded to his companions. "See ya topside," he said with a grin, clearly in his element.

The sea breeze carried the sound of waves crashing as Grommash winced, watching Gundin get a few dings on his jump. "Eh, going to have to buff those out!" he yelled over the tumult of the ocean. As Gundin began ascending the cliff, Grommash's gaze turned upward.

Above, Bhalgurn scaled the precipice with the agility of a mountain goat. Determination etched on his face, Grommash rolled up his already rolled-up sleeves, ready for the challenge that lay ahead. With a gruff determination, he started the climb, each foothold and handhold a testament to his resilience.

Gundin, ever dutiful, followed suit, the mechanical companion replicating Grommash's movements with an eerie precision

Bhalgurn had slipped on his first attempt. "It's this bloody gravity," he growed as an excuse for his poor attempt. He took a deep breath and charged on again, this time hoping to reach the top. If he did, he'd throw down the harness in case someone needed it.

The extra weight from this world's gravity is more than just a few invisible rocks in one's pack. Each reach for a handhold feels slightly off. Even craning one's neck to look up and plan the next movement feels strange.

Bhalgurn finds this out the hard way. He has the strength to compensate for the phantom weight but the odd sensation of moving vertically here trips him up. The intense gravity yanks him down and he joins the artificer in bearing scrapes and bruises.

Fortunately, the barbarian is made of tough stuff. He dusts himself off and makes the ascent look easy on his second attempt. Experience guides his hands to firm grasps instead of near misses. Then he has strength to spare in hauling himself up each time.

He anchors the rope at the top for the others to follow. Grommash benefits greatly from it and soon joins him up there.

Gundin first tries to emulate his creator's every movement. This proves to be a mistake because the two are not balanced the exact same way. The construct tries to compensate for the difference but--as Bhalgurn learned before him--doing so is a confusing task in this gravity. Failed grasps at the rope on his way down try to lessen his fall but Gundin still lands hard with a clanking thud. Again like Bhalgurn, his next attempt proves more successful.

Kutaeg has easiest ascent. He need not fear falling with three others available to belay him on the way up.

The journey was tough but short. The group now stands high and dry above the raging sea. The Claw Hammer waits patiently below for their return.

Now they turn their attention to the lighthouse. It has endured well against the endlessly recurring storms here. The stonework is weathered but with no signs of serious damage. The sturdy door has held fast all this time as well.

Of course something is amiss: the light has long since gone dark, rendering this once-proud landmark useless as a navigation aid.

OOC:

I don't think we need a check from Kutaeg for this. The sheet lists him as 115 lbs and he doesn't have a ton of heavy gear. Even in this gravity the others can easily support his weight on the rope without trouble and keep him from any danger of falling.

As they reach the top Kutaeg laughs and pats Grommash on the back, "Nothing like the adventure of possibly falling to certain death, no? Well me made at.... now look at this relic to a civilization long gone. A tool they used for safety, clearly an intelligent culture, with the ingenuity of self-reliance. Still....there's nothing quite as sad as a lighthouse without a light. I wonder when the decision was made to smother the flame...."  Kutaeg continued to ponder the death of this lighthouse as they approached, and he looked to the windows and the perimeter for any movement.

"Don't you go mindin' Kuteag's melancholy now," Bhalgurn said to Grommash. "He's usually more upbeat than this... But, come ta think of it, I guess this is our first time explorin' a dead civilization tagether. Suppose it's right ta give thought ta the ones that came before us."

Bhalgurn closed his eyes and said a short prayer for the dead planet. Then, as long as Kutaeg didn't stop him from something he saw, he moved towards the door, walking carefully, and tried the handle without opening it fully, to see if it was locked.

Kutaeg spies nothing amiss about the door itself. He presumably gives Bhalgurn the all-clear to check it out up close.

Bhalgurn finds the handle takes some effort to turn but is not locked. The door just seems to have jammed shut since being abandoned. A tentative test shows it has a little give. He feels plenty strong enough to wrench it open when the time comes.

Meanwhile, the bard continues his sweep of the outside. There is no one else out here on the precipice surrounding the lighthouse. Nor is there any other ship he can see as far as visibility goes. If there are any shipwrecks on the treacherous rocks, they have worn into the sea with time.

Kutaeg turns his attention to the windows. They are grimy from age without care. This makes them very difficult to see through. On top of that the interior is dark due to a lack of already-grim daylight entering through said windows. With a strain of effort and a wipe on the exterior, he peers in closer.

There's rhythmic motion barely visible inside.

It's low and metronomic and stuck in one place. It doesn't seem like a person pacing about. And who would still be here after whatever age has passed since the place was last occupied?

Kutaeg waved the others forward and motioned to the lighthouse. "Looks clear to me. Though there's something, almost technological, moving inside. Probably not a trap...just,er, lighthouse technology....." As they walked towards the entrance to the lighthouse, Kutaeg leaned towards Grommash, "Lighthouse Tech...is that a thing, Grommash?"

Bhalgurn yanks open the door with a swift burst of strength. The party bursts inside, ready for a confrontation with whatever ancient guardian lurks within.

They are met with an agitated rocking chair.

creak... creak... creak...

One might breathe a sigh of relief at first but this is not necessarily a false alarm. This is no mere shudder from the impact of waves crashing below. The chair is groaning back and forth with no sign of slowing.

It sits facing a window that once had a view of the sea. Time has clouded the windows into a dark translucence that barely lets in any light from outside. Dwarven darkvision kicks in when the party looks into certain corners of the room, casting them in shades of gray.

creak... creak... creak...

Stairs sweep up and around the perimeter leading to the next landing. Sacks and crates are stored underneath them. There is also a trapdoor in the floor.

The room has few other furnishings. A table with four normal chairs sits near one part of the wall. A half-empty bookshelf is against another.

creak... creak... creak...

Lowering his axe slightly in confusion at the scene, Bhalgurn scratches at his beard taking in the self rocking chair. He stood without breathing for a moment and didn't feel any wayward draft of air that could rock a chair. "Well, that's interestin'" Bhalgurn said cautiously. "Do ya get the sense o' anythin' magical in the vicinity?" Bhalgurn asked Kutaeg and Grommash. "Not sure I believe in ghosts, but chairs don't rock themselves where I'm from..." He walked a little closer, just to get a better view of the chair and the area around it, but not wanting to touch it or anything too rash.

Kutaeg noticed the chair moving. "A spectre?! This truly is a dead land." He approached and began tapping his foot to the same tempo as the rocking chair, and gave a deep, soft hum to try to disturb the air surrounding the seat of the chair. He was trying to sense any presence , if it was a ghost after all.

In the eerie room where the rocking chair seemed to dance to an otherworldly tune, Grommash stood in contemplative silence. His keen, intellectual mind refused to bow to the notion of ghosts, seeking instead a reasonable explanation for the mysterious motion. As if sensing his internal debate, Gundin nudged him gently, urging him into the room.

With a shake of his head, Grommash extended his hand into the air, as if grasping for an answer that eluded him. In a seamless motion, Gundin responded by placing a pair of spectacles into his outstretched hand. These were no ordinary glasses; they boasted an array of lenses, each of different sizes, shapes, and colors.

The interplay of colors and shapes revealed a tapestry of possibilities, and in this moment, Grommash, with his intellect and the aid of Gundin's ingenious invention, sought to unveil the truth that danced just beyond the realm of ordinary perception.

This may be their first expedition as a trio but the dwarves are already working together like one of Grommash's well-oiled machines. All three scour the area around the chair but each takes a different approach in doing so. Bhalgurn's eyes and ears are keenly trained on the physical world. Kutaeg feels for hints of the supernatural at work. Grommash ties together their findings with filters from the spectacles Gundin handed him.

Assuming Bhalgurn closes the door behind them, it's clearly not the wind; he demonstrates that by holding his breath and staying motionless while the chair carries on.

Grommash next considers the possibility of lingering motion from a recent occupant who scampered upstairs. He rules that out for a few reasons, including two from Bhalgurn's examination:

For one thing, Bhalgurn doesn't hear anything up there or spy any sign of recent passage up the stairs. For another, he mentally marks the chair's arc by reference to scuffs on the stone below. He observes for long enough to be sure it isn't slowing down at all.

Having crossed off two ideas, Grommash investigates the possibility of some kind of mechanism at work. He becomes reluctantly confident there isn't any. They could move the chair to prove that for sure but probably don't want to touch it yet. Another option would be to open the trap door and check underneath.

While he's at it, Grommash can't help but notice this place doesn't seem ransacked. Presumably it wasn't the very last occupied place on the planet. Maybe it was untouched after abandonment because of an orderly decline. Or, maybe it was spared from looting by its inaccessibility, especially once the path to it fell into disrepair.

It's Kutaeg who relays the most interesting results. He's not the only one to get a little closer; Bhalgurn does, too. But the bard concentrates on its rocking and starts tapping to match it. Then he hums while sensing for any kind of presence in the air.

creak... creak... creak...

He finds one.

It feels like being watched by a third eye. Whatever is lurking here wants something; he realizes this in time to steel his mind against it.

That chair must have had an interesting view in days gone by. One wonders what it would be like to sit and look out...!

OOC:

This is a Suggestion-like effect. It is Wisdom DC 14. We will give Kutaeg advantage on it due to recognizing the danger before it metaphorically grabbed him--thanks to strong rolls all around!

The second Kutaeg felt the presence in the room, he immediately winced and tried to strengthen his resolve against the presence registering in his own mind.
