Episode 6: The Hopeless Void

Fortunately Morgan's sinewy bonds don't try anything more than to squeeze the life out of her. Although that is certainly a fairly bad result in itself. Meanwhile Anna rushes in and begins slicing at the Rampant's limbs and organs again and again. Ichor and flesh fly everywhere and the Rampant seems to recoil unsure what to do. When Leslie announces her attack it pulls its limbs together in preparation for receiving what will no doubt be a powerful blow.

Meanwhile Delcroix has had a revelation. The illusion of the rampant's current form is allowing the scions to process it, but more than that it's allowing the world to process it. Reality can't and won't accept such chaos. The very reason that the rampant form this pocket dimension must have been to protect itself against a hostile reality. It's anchored here by the scion's own perceptions of it. As well as the souls of all of its victims.

That gives the scions leverage. Leslie has demonstrated this the most by manipulating the space of this dimension, but the other scions should be able to impose their will on it as well if they try.

At first, Leslie only mimes her fingers moving, waiting for the Black Fixer to make good on her opportunity. After a moment, however, she realizes she's giving the game away. The rampant's focus is on her, and she means to keep it that way. Besides, she likes the attention.

"Scared?" she taunts the rampant. "All your power, all your tricks, and for what? You're going to die today. I've killed so many of you, I can't even remember. And by the time the next one crawls into our world, I won't remember you, either."

Normally, she'd use such a taunt to prey on a rampant's fear, but this one's defenses are too strong. She can't bring out the fear in it. If she's lucky, though, she can summon its rage.

Mechanics

Rancor, Toughness DC 26

Emotion-based; usable on any target within perception without an attack roll; affects insubstantial targets and penetrates Impervious 8; damage must be healed normally; only usable on magical beings with intent to harm Leslie

Are we that close? Is she right?

Taking heart from the taunting barbs thrown at the Rampant, Anna keeps up her assault as the it pulls its limbs back... Forming one centre mass. Her feet skim over the 'floor' as Anna plunges forward, both arms outstretched as she drives for the Rampant's core and starts to rotate about as she goes. Not another magic, or a mystic technique. But if the best way to take the monster out is through it...

She just hopes nobody will see if she bounces off after this, spinning about like a drill... At least if she pierces through it, nobody can laugh!

The Black Fixer

This certainly was an interesting revelation. One she already guessed at a while back, but it's nice to see it confirmed. This whole thing was a bubble, all it needed was to be popped, and the Rampant would collapse. The only issue was getting all of the souls it devoured back. Well... if there was one thing the Moochee clean-up crews were good at, it was recovering those. Besides, it'd be pointless if they all died

Raising her sword high up, she then strikes at her feet, using it as a physical catalyst for her magic to pour into the Rampant's dimension and start destroying it. She wnated to disrupt it and exploit the chaos but even if it didn't work... it seemed to get very angry at its work getting tinkered with. Maybe that would allow the other Scion to use her emotion magic better

 Scion Morgan

Morgan struggles to no avail and lets out a tearful scream of pain as the Rampant squeezes her body. Damn it, why now?! Her mind races trying to figure something, anything out that may help her.

Fear starts to engulf the youngest looking Scion, closing in on her like pallid yellow hands. She screams again and again as she tries to break free.

Crack!!!

Morgan's eyes burst open, ignoring the pitiful tears that had started to fall unbidden, and with a final scream. "I am the mother ducking Scion of Will!" With that she manages to break free and catching herself midair and turns to face the creature. "FEAR MY MIGHT!!!" She screams as green energy flares and crackles in her eyes and her baseball bat flies back to her hand.

Leslie and Anna attack the rampant mentally and physically simultaneously, and their respective blows strike true. Leslie is able to goad the rampant to anger wearing away a bit of its self control. While Anna drills into the monsters core slashing organs and nodules that look important before escaping out the other side.

Unfortunately the rampant doesn't seem particularly phased by Morgan's declaration, though the strands of sinew and flesh do pull back from her. Delcroix on the other hand is a bit more successful. She isn't able to actually crack any of the rampant's dimensional walls, but as she pours magic over the area she is able to sense irregularities. Four knots of magic that seem to be holding things together.

The Black Fixer

Delcroix smirks as she notices the weaknesses in the Rampant's barrier. It's a small relief, she was starting to get worried that she couldn't find something she could pierce and would have to go back to wailing on it. Which seems to be increasingly effective, looking at the winged Scion's blows, but she was getting tired of the same approach all the time. She decides to strike a great blow, fashioning her magic into four "blades" of sort and sending them all at once to sever the knots in one fell swoop before the Rampant has any chance of realising what is going on

"You're goddamn right!" Leslie shouts, extending her arm to point at her. Then, she retracts her hand, holding both close to her body as her fingers move. Again, they seem to pluck invisible strings, but unlike most of her attacks, the effects of her magic are readily apparent to Morgan, if no one else.

Though it blasted back at her, Anna wasn't going to stop slashing wildly with abandon; not until one of them had given out. So she grit her teeth and turns to drive deeper, push on and carve another hole into the Rampant's flesh.

"C'mon, you can do better than that, can't you?!", she demands of the monster, trying to draw it's focus onto her while the others do whatever it is they're doing. It's been working after all, hasn't it?

Rather than attack the rampant directly Delcroix reaches out with her magic. She attempts to sever the knots of magic she has found all at once, but her grasp on her magic proves a bit too tenuous for such a decisive blow. It's good enough to destroy one of the knots however and it has an immediate effect. Instantly the rampant seems to wilt. It's body looking weaker and more shriveled. Leslie can feel it going from vaguely annoyed to downright worried as lashes out in an attempt to grab Delcroix. But it's enormous hands miss her by a hair's breadth.

Sensing an opportunity the scions don't let up. Even through a haze of pain and fear Anna relentlessly strikes down at the Rampant. Her blades cut deep into its organs. Morgan is a bit less success. Her orb of energy smashes into the rampant and tears a hole through its front to expose the writhing organs within. Between the success of her attack and Leslie's encouragement Morgan is feeling back in peak condition.

 Scion Morgan

Morgan sags a little as her attack fails to do anything useful in the battle against the Rampant. "This just doesn't end." She cries out unintentionally sounding like a pouty child.

"Does anyone have a clue as to what to do, here!?" She calls out to her fellow Scions.

The Black Fixer

Delcroix's last minute dodge cracks her concentration a little, but the withering and panic of the Rampant was galvanising enough to get right back in it. Before she tries it again with a little more focus, she hears the bat-wielding Scion cry out in frustration. Hrm... maybe she could help

She yells out "There knots of magic holding this place together, break them and it dies!" before pointing at the relative location of two of them. Physical blows wouldn't work as well, but it could still deal damage

She then focuses all of her might into destroying the third one, leaving it up to the others to deal with the rest

"It's dying already!" Leslie calls back to the Black Fixer. "But why not make it watch its world die with it? Its suffering will be exquisite!"

She's keeping her options open, of course. She's sure the rampant isn't fond of any of them, but the crueler she can be towards it, the more hatred it will bear for her. If this doesn't work, she's going to need it.

Mechanics

Leslie attempts to undo a knot the Black Fixer pointed out, using the same magical knowledge she wielded before.

She was winded already by its return attack, her movement slowed. Would she be able to break away from the rampant, to try and make it towards the knots the Black Fixer had revealed?

No. Probably not.

But she could trust in the others to target those lynchpins, couldn't she? If she held the body here.

Or at least, nailed it right to what made up a sort of ground, driving her blades into it again.

"I'll catch up!"

I hope.
