Oh, sorrow and woe!

"It pains me to say it, but we have a time crunch with our dear witch. She must take priority. And then she can brew up a potion that will turn them all into toads! Oh sorry Elora... didn't mean to..."

Dash's heart thumps wildly as he watches his friend fight in vain against the grasping hands and leashes, but there's nothing they can do to help the big galloot!

When the familiars finally regroup, he nods his head sadly. "He would want us to avenge our Mistress first, but if the opportunity arises, I will try to free him and give him the chance to flee"

Sighing, he turns his focus back to their problem. "So...do we know what to look for to find the murderer?"

Unconsciouly piling the loose sorghum into a tidy pile at his feet, Broom chirps. "Ok! Ok! The horses said to look for the leader of the village, a hunter... we should look for houses marked with rabbits feet."

"Look, look, I will fly. Elora, will you come with me...? More eyes, better sight? The rest can help look on the ground or stay and rest a moment, eat what you can. Meet you at the edge of that field." He gestured with a wing to a field with some cover closer to the village.

With or without Elora, Broom will take flight to circle the village, looking for right houses. Before leaving, he takes a final glance at Dash's feet, as if to fix what they look like in his mind. He takes another beakful of sorghum and is off.

Broom swoops low over the town, looking for something like Dash's feet on one of them. Almost every single one has some kind of markings over the door. He was pretty sure it was 'writing', but that was never something that he really paid much attention too before. Most of the buildings in the town were practically identical in shape and color, which made it easy to forget which parts of the town he had already looked at. He was about to give up and head back to the others when he noticed that the sign he was looking for was not actually on the door at all. Here and there, scattered seemingly randomly through the town there were some buildings that had a small wooden hutch at the back of the building that held a couple of well-fed rabbits. These buildings also seemed to have one or more sets of rabbit's feet hanging in one of the north facing windows. All told there were thirteen of these buildings across the town.

Broom flew back to the group and squawked as he landed. "Rabbits! Rabbits in 13 houses! Live ones, in the back!" He looked at Dash's feet. "With your feet, hanging in the north window!"

"Come come, show you!" Broom proceeded to guide the group to the closest house that was adorned with such feet. "Keep low, quiet... two-feets may be looking..."

Dash watches Broom as he flies around the village looking for...gulp...rabbits feet! He shudders at the thought.

So when he arrives back squaking about 13 rabbits, the old coney almost has a heartattack! "Feet...feet...feet!" he cries, thumping his own in fright.

However, it seems like many of the rabbits are still alive. "Come then, show us the way" he calls, then he slinks, belly low to the ground as they try to enter the village without being noticed.

The group slips into the town as quickly and quietly as possible. Broom kept as low to the roofs of the buildings as possible, calling down turns and directions to his companions below. Foot traffic in this area is currently fairly light, making sneaking through all the easier. As the group hid in the shadow of a large box while a couple of humans walked past, Asteroth overheard one remark to the other, "Oh, look! Did you see that bird? I think it was a raven, an ill omen for sure." Both humans then make the same gesture the farmhands had been making at odd events as they continue to walk past.

It took a few minutes more but the familiars on the ground finally spotted the horror for themselves. There in the window of a house in the line of nearly identical white-washed buildings, hung two pair of soft brown rabbit's feet, tied together at the ankles and hung from a simple length of twine. There were markings like in the Witch's books etched over the door, and it was easy to hear one or two people moving about inside.

The smell of the rabbit hutch in the back was particularly easy for Dash to scent. The small area between the road and the house was neatly trimmed grass and uniform to the houses on either side. A short stone pathway bisected this yard and led up to a single wide flat stone "porch" in front of the front facing door. A rough line of white powder lined the outside edge of the porchstone. No grass grew through the powder line, and enough shifted when the wind blew that it must be replaced regularly. It and the rabbit feet in the window were the only visual markers that made this building stand out from any of the its neighbors.

"See, see...rabbits, both live and not!" His beady eyes slid from the backyard to the feet hanging in the window to Dash's own paws. "Please keep your feet. I don't know if that's a tear I could mend."

The crow addressed his friends. "Can one of you talk to the rabbits, caged in the hutch? Maybe they know which house has the eyes of our dear Witch's killer..."

Dash gulped visibly when Broom made the comment about keeping his feet...he liked his feet, he was very attached to them!

All the markings around the cottage seem very strange, and yet somehow familiar. Dash decides he'd better avoid touching anything. He remembers one time he sniffed a white line on the floor of the cottage and the Mistressalmost put him in the cookpot.

Carefully he makes his way to the hutches. "Hello, anyone there?!" he calls

Ears, brown and mottled white and black, press against the wooden slats of the hutch and Dash can hear the rabbits moving in the elevated box. "What it that? Who are you?" two voices respond. One sounded younger, but male and the other like an older female.

Dash sighs with relief as he hears sounds from within...the evil villagers haven't killed all his distant kin it appears.

"I Dash!" he replies, the response being as much a description as a name. "Who keeps you here? Who lives within?" he asks, wondering if these poor trapped individuals will know anything of the outside world.

"Cozy", Azeroth said sarcastically. Azeroth thought to blow the powder line away, but if this was like their witch's lines, maybe it was another witch. Maybe they would help. So, instead, he waited to hear from Dash's new friends.

"The scarred man and the fat woman stay in the big building. The fat woman feeds us, and sometimes the man will come and take one of us to live inside the big building with them. Sometimes the man will bring new hutch mates, but that hasn't happened in a while." the rabbits in the hutch said, between crunches from chewing hay.

Azeroth caught a whiff of the powdery line as he looked at it. It smelled distinctly of salt, while the Witch's lines would often be a mixture of interesting herbs, plants and strange powders she got out of jars and other containers.

At first, Broom does his best to keep watch, but he also has to resist tidying some roughness in the line of powder around the porchstone. Oh, how it torments him!

He flits uncertainly back toward the hutch, following Dash, but then changes course to fly up to a window sill. He peers inside, but if he sees any sign of a two-legged, he will flit away, hoping not to be seen.
