Dash lollops along behind Bernie and the others, scampering towards the barn, yet fearful now that the humans are moving around and going about their business.

"Careful! Careful!" he insists, nervously, "...we can talk to the horses, but let's stay away from the longshanks!!!!"

The barn was bustling with activity. A little less than a dozen horses remained in their stalls, and three adult humans were hauling buckets of oats to the empty stalls. Two tiny humans had brooms and were sweeping the long run down the center of the barn. Bales of hays were arraying in a large loft area. Long troughs ran along the outer wall of the stalls, filled with hay from above.

Bernie trots openly into the barn, unconcerned by the hustle and bustle as his broad nose sweeps over the floor, sniffing and snuffling for the scents of the humans and/or horses he had detected in the clearing.  He has only one task in his simple mind: follow the scent trail as far as it will take him.  His small brown eyes remain oblivious compared to the olfactory map he is creating in his head.  “Come on Dash,” he encourages the nervous rabbit, “I’ve heard that sometimes the longshanks will give you a treat if you play a trick on them.  Hmm. Or was that for them?”

Broom

Broom flies to the top of the barn. The Witch is the only two-legged creature he has met who welcomed him inside. Such delightful messes in houses, but only The Witch would let him clean them up.

He observes from outside, half-looking for humans behaving strangely, half-looking for other birds he might speak to.

The two children with brooms notice the group of familiars first. They were racing each other while working, each trying to sweep a little faster than the other. Once they spotted Bernie standing there with a rat and toad perched on his back and rabbits standing nearby, they stopped sweeping and one, the blonde, giggled and waved at the group. The dark headed one's face fell into a scowl and addressing the small group he said, "What are you? You aren't horses and only horses are allowed in here."

From his perch on top of the barn Broom can see a few people riding horses, moving through the feilds around the town, seeming to direct the efforts of other people working there. There were no weapons or whips, and everyone that Broom could see seemed perfectly polite and carefully pleasant to everyone they interacted with. He could also see the people moving about the town. It pleased him greatly to see how the town was kept properly clean and orderly. Even the people were neat and tidy, something the Witch very seldom was.

Bernie isn’t entirely sure what the dark-haired boy is saying, nor why the blonde is moving her paw back and forth like that.  But their difference in demeanor is clear enough for any dog to see.  With instinctive friendliness he pads over to the young girl and gives her a wet sloppy kiss, leaving the matter of conversation to the clever rodent on his back.

Bernie's comment about the longshanks giving out treats piqued Dash's interest. He'd never heard that before, but he was sure he could think up a trick if there was the possibility of a carrot or three!

Cautiously, he hopped into the barn behind the group, sniffing the air as he went. When he saw the little longshanks getting on with some kind of chores, he froze. Now here was something he had encountered, In the past he'd come across some of the little ones who wanted to pick him up and cuddle him...but he never let them, for he'd also heard their terrifying playground songs...Run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run!

Despite Bernie's attempt at showing the longshanks how friendly they are, the trembling hare held back, ready the flee at a moment's notice.

Hopping from foot to foot, Broom waits for the others. He tries to "keep watch" although he's not sure exactly what that means. He's not sure how they are going to find the Witch's killer; there was nary a blood stain to be seen!

Absentmindedly, he starts pulling a few stray twigs from the gutters on the roof. Might as well make himself useful...

"Well you ain't horses either! Tell us who the group that rode in the other day was, probably all proud of themselves and I won't have to report YOU were in here. Or playing with a dog when you should be serving your horse mas... err charges!" Not giving the kids a chance to stop and think, "Well C'mon you're not mute, we've heard ya. Out with it!"

When the rat spoke the dark-haired child shrieked and dropped his broom. The heads of horses and grooms turned toward the sound, although most of the grooms were ill-positioned to have a good look. The child turned an ran. The little blonde girl also dropped her broom, but advanced with a smile. She held her hand out to Bernie, but kept her eyes on Asteroth. "The witch hunter and his deputies went out yesterday and seemed pretty pleased when they came back. I've never seen a talking rat before. Can you talk, doggie? I'm Bernice."

"Ahh what a coincidence. Bernice, Bernie. Bernie, Bernice." He introduces the girl to Bernie. "And I am Asteroth." He gives a courtly bow. "Now Bernice, could you tell us where the witch hunters are now." He resisted from using much more colorful name for the hunters.... she was a child after all. Asteroth was not a monster.

With a rapt countenance of uncomprehending awe, Bernie listens to Asteroth’s mastery of the human tongue.  Of course, none of the words make any sense to him, but it’s clear that the children understand, and he can’t help but be amazed by such an incredible linguistic feat, especially when he himself has trouble understanding his own kind at times—why can’t wolves howl more like dogs?

Wait … the blonde-haired child is talking to him with an outstretched hand.  He focuses intently, but everything is gibberish.  She seems to want something though?  And Asteroth is mentioning him by name.  Suddenly a candle lights in his small canine brain.

Lying down, the Saint Bernard carefully tilts and slides the rodent and toad off his back.  Thus relieved, he quickly pads over to where the dark-haired boy was, fetches the dropped broom, and gently places it at the girl’s feet.  For good measure, he retrieves the other broom as well.  Then he looks up, panting proudly as he awaits his reward.

As Bernie goes to gather the brooms, he sees the dark-haired boy talking with one of the grooms and pointing back at the group of familiars. The groom's eyes met Bernie's and went wide with surprise and horror. Bernie may not know the words, but he knows enough to know that all those other people were about to start coming quick.

The little blonde girl sat on the wooden floor of the barn and looked at the toad and rat sitting there. "Most of the deputies went out again this morning, but I haven't seen Mr. Brindle around." She looked at Elora and said, "Why do people get warts from toads?"

On the roof, Broom saw people moving to and fro among the buildings of the village. It was surprising that even the gutters of the barn were surprising clean. There couldn't have been more than a couple days worth of gathered leaves and twigs and bird waste in the gutters.
