spacer.png“There they are!” Bernie woofs proudly as the riders come into view.  “Hopefully one of them can tell us where the witch killer is!”  The large dog charges in excitedly at full speed, darting under and around the horses in his unbridled enthusiasm.  For a human not expecting such a welcome, the onrushing Saint Bernard might well be a terrifying sight—perhaps terrifying enough for one to run away to find the witch killer for help?

As Bernie, still being ridden by Asteroth the rat and followed by the rabbits, charges into the field barking and yapping. Several of the horses rear and whinny with obvious fear. Their riders also yell, although it is impossible for Bernie to tell whether the yells are about the horses or him or something else entirely. Asteroth can hear them yelling both to try to control their horses and for the croptenders to deal with this dog. Broom swept up Elora in his claws and soared overhead.

While the riders are busy keeping themselves mounted and their horses under control, the other humans that had been working among the crops began to carefully move towards the noisy beast, hoes and sickles in their hands as they try to carefully encircle the bizarrely behaving animals. Asteroth can hear them murmuring senseless platitudes that the rat recognizes as something the Witch had laughingly called 'prayers'

The farmhands are closing in, although reluctantly due to Bernie ferocity. The three or four horse riders nearby are similarly occupied but only for a moment.

Asteroth yells to the horses, "Free yourselves of your captors, you should be free."

"Dash. does your open things include opening buckles? Those humans may find it difficult to stay mounted with those seat contraptions strapped to the horses."

"If all else fails, burning fields might be in order, but please save that for last, yes?

spacer.png“What are those humans doing?” Bernie wonders aloud as he peers at the oddly tiptoeing farmhands.  He turns his head, looking to Asteroth for instruction—which, given that the rodent sits astride his back, makes for a curious sight—then nods once he understands his passenger’s intent.

“Hold on tight Asteroth … I’ll try my best to knock them off to free the horses.”  The hefty dog dashes in towards the nearest rider and leaps up as high as he can.  With teeth bared, he tries to clamp onto a sleeve or shirt or pants, or an arm or a leg, using his weight to drag the human down off his horse.

Asteroth clings tightly to Bernie's fur as the large dog dashes forward and clamps his jaws on the thigh of the nearest rider. The man screams and slams to the ground, a wheezy groan bursting from his lips and stifling the scream as he lands fully on his back. The now-unseated rider, Bernie and Asteroth were showered with dirt as the now freed horse kicked up dirt and bolted for the large barn. Dash appeared to be unseen amidst the crops, but as the farmhands closed in, he knew that it was mere moments before one of them practically stepped on the rabbit.

Broom, with Elora secure in his claws, sails above the tumult in the field. They can see that there are more people emerging from the barn, including the dark-haired boy and the blonde girl, all of them looking out into the ruckus in the fields.

Bernie

spacer.pngBernie revels excitedly in the dirt bath kicked up by the horse.  For a moment he lays down, ready to roll over onto his back and get every square inch of his fur nice and dirty, but he valiantly resists the temptation—Asteroth might not like being at the bottom of a literal dog pile.  Instead, he woofs up eagerly at the horses.  “Have you seen the witch killer at all?  The one who took her eyes?  Can you show us where he is?  Here, I’ll try to help free you from these pesky humans.”

So saying, the big dog barrels in and eagerly bounds up high at another rider, slamming into him with full force and knocking him clean off his mount.

Broom

Flying above the brewing chaos, with Elora in his talons, Broom speaks to the toad with an almost gleeful spark in his eyes. "Making a mess, a mess... dirt everywhere! Watch, watch... humans are circling, we may need to help them get away!"

The crow flies in large circles above the field, watching his companions below interact with the tidy "bipeds" from town.

"Dash"

Dash sits very still, his heart thumping at a pace that matches his usual speed. There are just so many humans, and some are heading his way!!

As Asteroth urges the horses to free themselves, Dash twitches his nose once again, hoping to unbuckle the leather contraptions that seemed to hold the longshanks in place on the back of their equine slaves.

Task performed, the old hare's nerve breaks and he sprints away from the oncoming legs, white tail bobbing and flashing as he zig-zags furiously in an attempt to avoid capture.

Bernie dashes another rider to the ground, as Dash releases the clasps and buckles on a third horse. It's rider suddenly slid to the dirt as the saddle comes free. There were still two other riders to deal with, but the freed horses called out, "The leader of the village is inside! That is the hunter you seek, look for the houses marked with rabbit feet." They wheeled and rushed for the treeline.

The farmhands closed in on Bernie, getting ready to seize or skewer him. Dash vanished into the fields before any of the farmhands spotted them. Broom and Elora sailed through the air above. Asteroth still clung to the big dog, but it looked like staying here may be leading to imminent captureor death.

Still circling above, Broom speaks to his passenger. "Elora, help, help... confuse the people around Bernie... give them a chance?

I could maybe pick up our rat, but I'd have to set you down first. Let's see, let us see."

Elora

"Yes good idea" Elora replies she then begins to sing one of the songs the witch taught her to mesmerize menfolk.

Come little huntsmen
I'll take thee away
Into a land of enchantment
Come little huntsmen
The time's come to play
Here in my garden of shadows

Follow sweet huntsmen
I'll show thee the way
Through all the pain
And the sorrows
Weep not poor huntsmen
For life is this way
Murdering beauty and passions

Hush now dear huntsmen
It must be this way
Too weary of life
And deceptions
Rest now my huntsmen
For soon we'll away
Into the calm and the quiet

Come little huntsmen
I'll take thee away
Into a land of enchantment
Come little huntsmen
The time's come to play
Here in my garden of shadows

As Elora's croaking song rang down from on high, the farmhands, riders (unseated and still mounted) and even some of the horses all seem to pause, looking around in confusion and disorientation. Even as eyes turned skyward, it seemed difficult for them to associate the magical tune with the Crow and Frog above them. Asteroth can hear many murmured comments among the farmhands of this being signs of witchcraft and evil. Again many of the humans take a quick moment to make a gesture with one hand, nearly identical to the ones the grooms were making in the barn when doors started opening by themselves.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bernie urgently said to Asteroth, "You need to get into the town and find that hunter, I'll distract them." Bernie took advantage of the farmhands distraction to carefully let Asteroth leap from his back into the safe concealment of the cornrows. The brave hound then howled and charged one of the farmhands, knocking the man to the ground. The farmhands, muttering prayers of protection against magic and witchery, turned their focus back to Bernie. Some of the hands had produced ropes from somewhere and quickly fashioned lariats from them, preparing to capture the mad dog.

In confusion and concern over their compatriot, all of the familiars but Bernie regather in the next field over, hiding among the sorghum stalks. Broom and Elora were able to circle long enough to see Bernie captured, bound and carried off towards the town gate. Now not only did they need to get the witchhunter's eyes, but they needed to save their friend as well.

Broom

Broom flew into edge of the group, dropping Elora in a slightly unceremonious fashion next to Asteroth. He announced to the group. "Bernie, Bernie, Bernie is bound up. Taken!"

The crow came to ground, hopping from one clawed foot to the other. "What do you we do? What do we do? Can we find our Witch's killer? Do we follow Bernie?" Unconsciously, Bernie pecked at the ground, picking up stray sorghum grains with his beak to eat. Even if he was nervous, his empty stomach was talking.
