Purple Dove & the Blue Blunder

Blue sniffs at the air, finding something interesting. Dove gives his harness a few warning tugs. "Don't get distracted, boy."

She gives Inkewell a thumbs up. "On it! Go ahead, I'll see if Blue can find any extra supply."

The heroine hops off her dog. "Okay Blue, it's Tracking Time." She snaps a finger. "I'm going to need you to find some of, ah one moment, more of this stuff."

Purple Dove waves around a flask of water she keeps handy in her supply belt, and gives Blue a few gestures. He doesn't seem to get it, seeming a bit distracted, so she opens it up and pours a little in her hand.

"Water. Track this, please. It's not a- don't sup all of it. Argh, okay, might be having a bit of an off day. Maybe if I..." Snrf snrf snrf.

She makes a lot of unsightly snuffling sounds trying to get the message across. It takes a few seconds of the dog drinking the water before Blue finally figures out what she's doing, and starts off without a lick of hesitation.

Violet barely manages to latch onto him in time, almost keeping from getting dragged along the ground.

Turkey Lane

The hoses aren't long enough to reach, but between knocking obstructing rocks out of the way with tendrils of ink and grasping the truck itself, Inkwell can get the whole thing righted and rolling slowly on its battered wheels. The cops and firefighters cheer as it starts to move.

One of the firefighters turns to her and calls out, "There's a dry hydrant up by the farmyard, we were gonna hook the pumper up to it."

Adams Turkey Farm

Blue sniffls around and barks excitedly at a pipe with a few garden hoses by the side of the larger building, then stops and points. Through the trees, you can see a small pond about 100 yards away.

Diana's in the middle of a burning storage area. There are stacks of grain, a few tools. The attic above the main area is collapsing, dropping the spare furniture and gear that had been left up there. A board clunks off her, scorching her clothes but not damaging her. The heat immediately around her has dropped, she's absorbing some of the energy of the fire. She's a bit worried that a major hit would trigger a fiery reaction, but for now she seems to be reducing the flames.

Coalfire

It's only as the fiery plank falls on her that Diana realizes that she's under little threat. One can hardly suppress the fear of fire. Yet, her situation might be more perilous to the house, as she's quite convinced those firemen, or someone, is going to put the fire out. If she turns into a monstrosity, the house is gone.
Hence, she starts dodging everything fiery timber or ember.

Coalfire

By watching the burning rafters overhead, Coalfire manages to avoid any more of the falling flaming bits.

One of the nearby rafters gives way, dropping a wooden crate onto the floor. The crate's a cube about three feet wide on a side. It splits open when it hits the ground, scattering unusual-looking electronics across the floor.

Judging by the flames, you don't think the building has much time left before it collapses.

Farm

Once righted, the firefighters can get the truck moving slowly up the hill. Most of them are occupied pushing the truck.

The police run up to the door of the white farmhouse and start pounding on it. The house itself isn't next to either of the burning buildings. The large low building with the hole in it is across a wide yard from it, the second burning outbuilding is next to that, and then there are a few more adjacent buildings.

The buildings around the yard make a rough U-shape, with the long broken building one arm, the burning outbuilding that Coalfire is investigating near the corner, another building that looks like it could be a maintenance shed at the end, then another storage building as the other arm, then finally the farmhouse at the end. Unless the wind picks up and the fire really gets going, the farmhouse itself doesn't seem in danger, unless the fire spreads all around the U of buildings.

Coalfire

"Loot! Wait, I mean. Look!" to no-one in particular, except the mice exiting the building, as she should. But the urge to investigate overcomes caution and she kneels down, rummaging through the electronics, trying to pick the most revealing items. Green-tinted cards, little knobby things, shiny patterns. She's not even sure they're not all the same part, as she holds some to her eyes. And sees smoke. Then grabs an awkward armful before rushing out.

Inkwell

image.png

Inkwell stays around the firefighters long enough to make sure they can hook up to the hydrant and begin fighting the blaze. Assuming that Blue points out the large pond she would form a large scoop to enclose as much water as she could and dump it where the firefighters point out its needed the most. "Thank you everyone." she wipes off her sweating brow examining the yard for anything else that stands out.

Coalfire

Coalfire doesn't think the building has that long before collapse, so she grabs what she can before she darts out, still glowing slightly from absorbed heat.

While heading for the door, she has a chance to take a closer look at what she's grabbed. She has a few wires, those were easy to grab, an arc of metal that reminds her of that disk in the field, and a thumb-sized crystal of what looks like some kind of orange-colored quartz with a bunch of wires soldered to either end.

Once outside, it's much easier to see. That's about when the water hits her.

Inkwell

Once the firefighters got the truck up to the hydrant, they waste no time in getting the pump connected. After a few tries, they start the pump, and after a very long pause they get water flowing.

They point the hose at the long building, since that's within easy reach. One of them points at the outbuilding next to it, the one that Coalfire had ducked into, and shouts to Inkwell, "That one! The fire's in the rafters, get that one!"

With her ink-scoop, Inkwell manages to lift a load of water over towards that building and dumps it, just in time to catch Coalfire stumbling out, carrying what looks like an armful of electronics parts.

Farmhouse

The police seem are talking animatedly with someone at the door of the farmhouse.

Coalfire

Diana is about to speak but she looks at the loot she collected, then at the people around, none of which seemingly more knowledgeable than her about electronics. Then she consider the dousing water, and how cold it is out there when drenched.

"I need to find names and proof before it's all burned up!" she says to no-one in particular.

And heads back in the burning building! Her goal's to search for writing on the crate, or documents, or parts with names. This time she takes her time, ignoring the situation, trusting the water and/or her powers.

Coalfire

Between the water cooling things down and Coalfire's natural resistance, she manages to pull everything out that seems of interest.

The crate that broke open didn't have any labels on it. She can scoop up a good pile of parts, mostly a tangle of what looks like communications gear, much of which has the Quantalico Communications logo on it. There are a few more of those odd orange crystals.

There's a second crate, next to the one that fell. Grabbing that from the rafters and pulling outside to safety, you find what look like half-completed smaller versions of the disk from the field. There's also what looks like something between a hair net and a skullcap: a thing hat-like object made of wire mesh, studded with a handful of small inset orange crystals. Wires dangle out of it, and parts of it seem to be missing.

That's all. You don't find any pages of notes, journals, letters, or other writing.

Coalfire

With any imminent danger averted and the fire put off, seems like it's time to move on to investigation in the city. Diana asks around if the two other rescuer know about technical stuff, or technical types, that could help out understand what the thingamajig does, besides serving as a convincing costume party outfit? If not, we'd head downtown and find the nearest Radiosmack: surely the gearheads there will know exactly what this it. Or is there a university of some kind with a bespectacled lab-coated researcher?

Adams Turkey Farm

Diana gets one of the firefighters to look at the stuff. "I dunno, but you could ask at the university. There's a bunch more bits that look like that over in the workshop, too." He shrugs and points at the Quantico logo on one of the pieces. "Or you can just ask those guys. They're local, they had a toaster fire like a month ago."

grumpyfarmer-small.jpeg.5dbdcda6b04f41863e0a68be6ff764b8.jpegAbout this time, the ongoing argument over by the door of the farmhouse gets a notch louder. An older man, wearing a ridiculous straw hat, comes barging out of the house, yelling at everyone in the farmyard. "The fire is out. You can all leave. Thank you. We are all fine here. Please leave. Now!"

Coalfire

Pushing through the firemen, Diana confronts the angry man with her own yelling.

"Oh, YEAH? Fire! This is all too handy! Destroying good land... and poultry... Not meeting your quotas, are you? I've seen them, and I wonder what exactly you FEED those POOR beasts so they grow so large and... and... (mimics bulging eyes and pecking turkeys)... mesmerized what? Antibiotics? Hormones? I..."

As she furiously scratches the ground, little droplets of metal begin to form, quicksilver sweat.

(Intent's to distract the man so that others can sneak in the "workshop" or the main house and see if there's something besides what's in the barn.)

Purple Dove & the Blue Blunder

Purple Dove peeps into the crates, pulling out a couple of things and stuffing them into her pouch. A few crystals, some functional-looking Quantico equipment, that funny braincap that bulges it out awkwardly so she straps it to Blue instead. Mostly safe. Probably won't explode this time. If they were gonna blow up at any point, the fire would've kicked it off earlier.

Blue meanwhile, stares at the scene Diana's making, bewildered by her behavior. He seems torn between getting involved and watching to see how it plays out, hopping back and forth and pawing at the ground.

Violet gives him a rub on the shoulders. "Don't worry, she's not going to make everything worse. Coalfire knows what she's doing." She sounds like she's trying to reassure herself, and Blueberry makes clear note of this.

Coalfire

Faced with Diana, the farmer abruptly freezes his tirade. "I know, right? This guy is such a bigot! This whole business is built on bird persecution, so the only just response is to burn it to the ground along with everyone who supports it!"

He grimaces, twitches, then resumes his ranting. "I mean, get off my property! And stay out! Everything is fine so leave!"

Inkwell

The side building, the one Coalfire just came out of, doesn't have anything more to see, but the building at the far end of the U looks more interesting. It's not a warehouse, but looks more like a workshop. Up front, there are the usual tools and gear you'd expect at a farm: elementary machine tools, supplies, the kind of gear you'd expect to maintain equipment.

But if you push a little deeper in, things get far stranger. There is a gleaming metal table, a set of clamps, electronics gear. It looks like there used to be more here, but there are a line of scrapes heading out the back, as if something heavy had been dragged out.

Purple Dove & the Blue Blunder

Purple Dove manages to grab another load of gear from the crates. You think you've rescued pretty much everything interesting.

Blue thinks the farmer smells funny, like the smell of a thunderstorm.

Create AdvantageCoalfire succeeds on creating advantage, with style, so there are two free invocations.

I'll call the aspect something like "Distracted" on the farmer, but if you're going for something more specific, let me know.
