Little Trouble in Big Absalom

Recommended Posts

Once you've all gathered together, the Tunnelmaster pries away wooden boards and chunks of stone from the narrow mouth of a tunnel. On the other side you can see rich fabric on hangers, exquisite vases, and wooden crates with unknown prizes inside. Just a fraction of this wealth could enable the Hookclaws to live in more comfort than they have in generations. But Hookclaws are smart, and they know when things are too good to be true. That’s where you come in.

"I need you to scout this area and clear it of any threats," commands the Tunnelmaster. "You get first pick of anything you find. Be careful."

The familiar smell of earth and musty neglect wafts across your nostrils as you scuttle through the dirt tunnel and into the chamber. From here, you can see past the curtains of rich fabric and giant wooden crates into the rest of the room. Stacks of books and other luxury items are haphazardly crammed onto massive wooden shelves, preserved from mold despite their clear abandonment. Immense piles of furniture, rich with intricate carvings and plush cushions, have been jammed up against the walls. Chests with glittering locks lie on the floor, coated with dust. A pile of casks, sacks, and barrels forms a looming barricade across the western end of the room, which blocks the rest of the chamber from view. You all notice softly glowing lights shining out from under the nearby beds.

Drizzle the brave blue-scaled warrior steps carefully into the room behind his shield, peeking around from behind it.

"Sweet mother of dragons... Stuff! So much stuff!" He is in awe, unsure what to look at first. Eventually he takes bold steps forward, a vanguard of koboldkind - and ducks in a corner between crates, peeking.

Looking around, Drizzle sees old books, worn toys and dolls, clothing and shoes (some of which are even small enough to fit a kobold), small painted portraits of dark-skinned humans, and holiday decor. But his eyes keep getting drawn back to those lights under the beds... they seem to be moving.

"Th-thrrrreats?" Shroom croaks out with a rolled r.

Upon stepping inside, Shroom is visibly quite put out by the lack of mold in the room. 'Maybe the glowing lights are some sort of fungus?' He drops prone where he is to hopefully see under the beds.

Actions

1. Drop Prone

2. Seek (under the beds almost-directly west)

Tulki, twitchy and expecting the worst, peers around the room. He spots the lights under the bed along with everyone else.

I-I might be able to figure out what's going on there.

Looking nervously around, he scuttles toward the nearest bed, keeping a careful eye on the lights in case they change somehow. If he gets close enough to a bed, he very cautiously peers under it.

As you get close, you realize that the things under the beds are insects. They crawl out, chittering angrily as they prepare to attack you for invading "their" territory.

Shroom's tongue lolls out in surprise as the insects make for the group. He quickly reels it in as he prepares to defend himself. 'Maybe the glow-bugs ate all the fungus...' he muses suspiciously.

"Ack! Shiny bugs, what a bummer!" Drizzle yelps, both surprised and frustrated, and grips his trusty shovel-pick-mace. He takes a careful step forward and gives the bug a good wallop!

A hazy cloud of mist and wood splinters explodes outward from Shroom and settles in a 10 foot emanation. A large drop of water coalesces out of the swarm and streaks toward the northwest bug. (edit: Beetle 2)

"Die, mold-destroyers!" he shouts as a thick snow falls over the three bugs.

Ah! Tulki yelps in dismay. He'd been expecting ghosts, or maybe some sort of enchanted gnomes. He's been trained for all those. Bugs are...weirdly surprising.

Shroom's attacks do some damage, while Drizzle's misses its mark.

Ruth remembers that these bugs are called flash beetles. When threatened, they can make their glowing abdomen glow even brighter, almost bright enough to blind those who see it - and the one in front of Drizzle proceeds to do exactly that. Another bug attacks Drizzle as well, while the third moves and targets Tulki.

Beetle 1
:OneAction:Light Flash - all creatures within 10 ft (@Rumsztyk, @LargestFriend, and the other beetles) must succeed at a DC 17 Fortitude save or be dazzled for 1 minute

Beetle 3
