Chapter 1.1

Penchant

Recommended Posts

The four friends and allies had had a hard season. Adventure, danger, risk and reward was a heady and powerful calling. But it was draining as well. They had decided to winter in Twilight Valley. It was long and cold but the group was flush with coin and had lived quite well. As the winter breaks their gear is gathered and tabs are paid and the group gathers again with leads to follow and adventure to be had.

The city's gates are open and people are already heading in and out of the settlement to go about their day. It is still early with a few stars in the sky and the moon visible on the horizon.

Suddenly there is a new star in the sky. It flares brightly and settles down into a shimmer. Heavenly light shines down on the party and the world seems to slow down to a halt.

Behold and take heed. The seeds of heaven are within you. Awaken and see with new eyes for the tides of darkness are upon you. The seals are broken and the Hounds of Hell bay for the harvest of souls to come.

This. Is. War.

We name you as the Chosen to stand as mortals, unbound by the strictures of oaths taken eons ago. Go forth, led by your hearts and do what must be done.

Each of the group glows with an inner light and becomes aware of new and awakening power within. This power comes not from the star, but from deep within.

The light dims but the star remains. The world resumes it's pace, seemingly unaware of what transpired. There is a single breath of peace before the air is sundered with the sound of a gong resonating from mountain top to mountain top and a tremor in the Earth. From the gates of Twilight the party can see a flash of red light across the vale and a fissure opens in the air. Acrid and rancid smoke issues forth from it, soon replaced by the flapping of fiending wings. LIttle Demons start streaming out and attack the city folk traveling by with wicked claws. You see men torn apart and women carried into the air only to be dropped with sickening ends.

The battle has already begun.

Sabrael Gandhari - Human Sorceress (Character sheet)

AC: 28 | HP: 63/63 | Speed: 30' | Initiative: +12 | Damage Reduction: 5 acid, 5 cold | Fast Healing 1 | Condition: Normal

Sabrael.png.7875ee67a3eb068aa095b21bf22c5212.png

Seeing the demons attack the innocent people around them, Sabrael understood the meaning of the divine message she had received; this was the beginning of a war, and she and her companions were meant to play a part in it.

"There is nothing for it. We must fight. Win or die." she sighed.

"Courage and strength, Diamond Crusaders !"

Her companions were standing nearby - ideal conditions for one of her spells.

The sorceress quickly whispered a short formula; soon the entire party was able to move significantly faster.

Cast: Haste.

She then proceeded to move forward, positioning herself behind one of the nearby chariots.

Denrag's eyes went wide, both from the unexpected message and the sudden outburst of carnage. Still, Sabrael's words helped snap him out of his momentary surprise. With the effects of her magic washing over him, the windborn warrior shot forward, with a wordless battlecry. As he did so he reached for his power, invoking the ability that allowed him to call upon the silver wind. He didn't loose it yet, even as he flew he did his best to determine which kind of fiend they faced so that he could counter them.

As he came to a halt, he reached for even more power. Effecting the creatures at such a distance was taxing, but he could not standby while they harmed the innocent. With a fearsome cry he loosed a torrent of wrathful wind at one of the demonlings. Such was the force of the wind that all that in it's way were faced with a brief gale.

Sunna Halvesen——————————Round 1
O8ngRC7.png

Sunna was in awe of the divine power that chose her to carry on this crusade against the dark forces that threaten this world. She says a quiet prayer of thanksgiving for this honor. She promises not to squander the power she was given.

Sunna is surprised that she would have an opportunity to make good on her promise so soon. As the tiny demons flew out of nowhere and began attacking villagers she recognized them instantly.

"An army of quasits!" she shouted to her companions, "Their claws are poison, and they are immune to electricity. Fire, cold and acid are less effective against these demons as well."

Once Sabrael's magic washed over her she snapped into action, lunging forward on her fleet feet toward the bridge.

"We have to protect those people!" she hollered at the team.

Despite being incredibly blessed by powers from beyond, she quickly makes one more prayer to ask for divine judgment on her foes.

Once she reached the bridge she yelled at the demons to get their attention, hoping they would turn from their murderous task to attack her instead.

Quake

Quake had already devoted his life to the protection of the innocent and less able so as the voice rings in his mind and the time slows there is more a feeling of acceptance and recognition than anything else. Like a child returning to it’s mother.

"GRRRraaa"

Quake lets out a roar as loud as he can, as he raises up on his legs they bulk up and elongate (shift +20 to movement) . Having fought with him before it is clear what the large cat was doing, we would run into a position and then be ready to pounce.

The Quasit that Denrag strikes is obliterated and the other two are blown down but are unharmed.

Some of the quasits peel off from harassing villagers and head to take on the new threats.

Four move in on Quake and he takes a bite out of one of the incoming. It takes horrifically bad. The other three swarm in and attack. One gets in a good shot and Quake take 2 points of damage and must make a DC 13 fort save against poison.

Two move in on Sunna and she gets a shot in on each of them with Waveblade. They take near deadly strikes but still have some fight left and care nothing for their own existences. They attack. Neither hits

Meanwhile a number of villagers run past the party heading for the bridge. Two collapse under the effects of poison. Two more villagers die under the swarm of quasits that have not broken off to go do battle.

The party has initiative.

The wind master was disheartened to see that despite his attack and the approach of his comrades, many quasits continued to attack the innocent. In a bid to give them something else to worry about, he flew closer and loosed another gale force attack at a pair of demons. Seeking to bait out more of them he taunted them in their own foul language. "Your reckoning is here hellspawn! Contend with the Diamond Crusaders and perish!" His defenses weren't as strong as some of his companions, but he trusted in his resilience to see him through well enough to counter attack.

Quake holds his position as he is charged by the Quasit swiping one away as it approaches.

Powerful claws swipe left the right sending two corpses limp on the rough earth. His jaw graps and shakes at the last in his reach before also tossing it aside.

Sunna Halvesen——————————Round 2
O8ngRC7.png

Enemies were dropping left and right. She couldn't fly or shoot fireballs or tornadoes at the enemies, so she just had to run for it. Unfortunately, that didn't leave much time to attack. Still, she hoped she was a nice big target to distract the evil demons from attacking innocents.

Sabrael blasts two of the quasits, but they dodge the worst part of it and seem unaffected (made saves and the rest soaked by resistance)

Denrag blasts demon at O4 which obliterates it, the one next to it is blown further back but is unharmed.

Quake swiftly kills two of the demons on him, but the third pushes past it's wounds to fight on.

Sunna moves into position.

A quasit comes over to help attack Sunna but she dispatches it quickly. The other two on her strike and one gets in a lucky shot. Sunna takes 2 points of damage and must make a DC 13 Fort save vs poison.

Multiple quasits attempt to swarm Ragnar, leaving the villagers behind. They bite and claw but cannot get through his damage reduction.

One lone Quasit goes to attack Sabriel but misses it's swipe. It grins gleefully at her.

There is a deep rumble and the open portal pulses with energy. It explodes with hellfire and widens considerably allowing molten slag from the hells to ooze forth. Through the enlarged portal steps two fierce looking demons.

The demons are tall and thin with mouths full of sharp fangs. Great bat-like wings stretch from scaly hide.

Sunna is near the blast of the opening gate and might take some damage from it.

OOC: Sunna takes damage from fire. 19 points, DC 20 reflex save for half.

Demon's Turn:

The first demon overlooks the battlefield with a smirk. A clawed hand is raised and power glows in it's eyes. Ragnar and Quake are overcome with feelings of torment as the magic passes through them.

(Ragnar and Quake most make DC 21 Will saves against Mass Hold Person)

The second demon points it's finger at Sunna, the nearest target and a black bolt shoots forth. It hits a 19 touch AC. She gains 3 Negative Levels.

The party has initiative.

Quake goes for the epicenter

Quake hates mind control!

Truth be told he doesn't just hate it but it raises phisological pangs of fear. As he feels the demons mind reach into his, his reaction is visseral. All his training and connection to the beastial aspects barely save him.

He lets out a deep groam and the leaps toward the hew threat. Leaping into the air he hovers above the two startly with one he lets out a ficious volley trading pure power for accuracy.
