It withers and burns in a plume of sulfurous smoke, leaving behind a little golden lantern in it's wake. The glass on the lantern cracks and the light inside fizzles out. Coinciding with the extinguishing of the lantern light, the portal across the field fizzles and finally closes. The slagma that had oozed forth from the hells remains, but it begins to cool. There are a few low level clerics among their ranks to stabilize wounds and start the triage. A few commoners will be found to live but the carnage was pretty severe. An emissary from the Baron will approach the party and entreat them to come and gather before the Baron. "Greetings, Holy Ones. We are blessed by your presence. Portals opening, small demons coming through at first followed by powerful ones that overwhelm those that stand. I know that two small states are on the verge of falling just from the initial assault. I know not what you will encounter. Our court wizard has the ability to 'teleport' a long distance and can get you to the capitol on the morrow. I expect they will actively be under siege as you arrive."
