2. The Black Script (continued)

Reluctant to hurt this hapless beast, let alone kill it, she murmured a silent apology as she fumbled for another sling bullet and sent it on its way.

Mechanics

Same song and dance as before.

Actually, two sixes on the attack roll make it a Mighty Success! I'm going to choose the Crushing Blow option to add +6 to the damage dealt, flavouring this as managing a lucky hit to one of the beast's eyes, perhaps.

The bullet streaked across the intervening space to strike the thing dead center in its left eye. One of its red lights went out. The creature thrashed about, renewing its enraged screeching. It struck down aimlessly with its beak using incredible force. Its enclosure began to shake and bits of broken masonry split apart around the narrow window opening.

Asara happened to be in the way. The power of its bone-crushing acicular awn knocked the northron nearly to the ground. The powerful beak went into the roofing, smashing a great crumbling hole. The already ruinous gable gave away, dumping the three heroes within along with a cloud of dust.

They landed hard amid a pile of loose masonry, but miraculously without further injury to themselves. The heroes found themselves in a narrow brick passageway, looking upward from their fallen position toward the starlit heavens. Above them, the silhouetted head of the beast continued to thrash just out of reach, and high above it, Milord squawking and circling. The mythunga cocked its head to one side, peering down into the gloom with its remaining good eye. It continued to peck down at the unseen trespassers.

It was dark within the corridor. One side had caved in, not allowing further passage, but the orher direction led into a gaping darkness.

Nice job, Tikina! That brings it down to 9 LB. Now for some rolls…

That’s a hit on Asara (defense and protection are already modified, and I’ve adjusted her Lifeblood total, above).

Continuing to fight the monster from your new recessed positions incurs a -2 penalty. However, the creature is likewise penalized.

"If you think putting me down in this hole will save you, beast.. you are sorely mistaken!" Asara adjusts her grip and uses the long reach of her sword more like a spear as she rushes the creature in the narrow space, stabbing up towards its snapping face.

The blade caught the creature where its skull met its snake-like neck, scoring a terrific wound which began to spit forth gouts of gore upon the three. The mythunga recoiled in agony, letting its shrill song of rage ring out among the estates of Lysor.

The creature's impending fate saddened her. Whether it was an unnatural, sorcerous creation or not, she could not help but feel it deserved better than this. Yet what could she do? If the beast was permitted to rage any longer, it might well end up drawing the attention of the manse's still more dangerous denizens – and her companions, Tikina was virtually certain, did not share the curious pity she felt for the monstrous avian.

No, there clearly was nothing for it. Stifling a sigh, she fit another bullet in her sling's cradle and made an attempt to put the creature out of its misery.

Mechanics

Tikina makes another ranged attack with her sling. Same modifiers as before.

The creature continued to asssult those that stumbled upon its lair. Like a battering ram, its bony and bloodied head launched into the crevice below it to snap at anything that moved below it. Frustration manifested in a low gurgling chortle. The thing emerged fully from the narrow opening of its refuge. Its fleshy wings stretched out, blotting out the stars. Turning its body to better snap at the occupants of the sunken corridor, it snapped again and again. Bits of brick and plaster rained down upon the already fouled heroes.

Looks like Asara went out of turn there. It’s okay. Just wait for the next sequence after this turn (GM’s):

  • Balathu (finishes turn 3)

Turn 4

  • Tikina
  • mythunga
  • Asara/Balathu

Turn 5

  • Tikina
  • mythunga
  • Asara/Balathu

I should have added, the positioning applies to melee combat only. Slinging incurs only the thing’s Defense of 2 as a penalty.

Edit. I forgot to add the 2d6 on the first actual attack roll. It is a failure in any case.

Edit2. Given its position change, the modifier to exchange melee attacks is now -1 instead of -2.

The lobbed stone pelted the beast in the throat. The young woman could not tell if it did anything to hinder the beast. Her hesitancy costed her. With suddenness, the monster struck at her with its sharply pointed and serrated beak. The deadly appendage could not wedge into the crevice deep enough to outright snatch Tikina up and shake her to pieces. Instead, like a ram, the hardened bill knocked her roughly down, knocking the wind from her lungs. More brickwork rained down on the heroes and the crevice widened. It clawed at the edges to widen it yet further in its madness to kill the intruders.

Milord squawked and dove to peck at the monster in a loyal, but futile attack.

Turn 5

  • Tikina
  • mythunga
  • Asara/Balathu

Tikina doesn’t face any negatives while using her sling. Furthermore, this probably constitutes point blank range. So, it’s a hit! I’ll roll damage…

Edit1. Only 1 it seems. The mythunga still has 1 Lifeblood remaining.

Edit2. Randomly choosing Tikina, it attacks and hits for 3 damage. Tikina is down to 5 Lifeblood!

Edit3. Revised to show Tikina’s sling was a miss after all.

With her final thrust, Asara drove the point of her sword up as the the mythunga darted its head downward. Waiting for its beak to open, she drove it up seeking the fleshy top of its mouth. Her timing was true, impaling the thing. Its death throes nearly tore the sword from her hands and battered her against the narrow corridor walls. The nothron woman did not relent. The gore continued to issue from its wounds. Now spent from strength, the mighty bird slumped. Its head dangled loosely above them.

Panting from their exertion, and covered with dust, down, and bloody ichor, the three found themselves still very much alive, and only scratched up and bruised. Their new location offered another way into the rest of the building. The corridor continued toward the heart of the estate.

With habit born from years of wandering Lemuria as a travelling healer, Balathu immediately produces linnens, ointments and a flask of clean water from his the pouches around his belt and sets about cleaning and dressing Asara's and Tikina's wounds. He's aware that he wasn't much use against the beast - he likes to think that he can handle a blade reasonably well, but that's against ruffians attacking him on the street, not against huge monstrosities that can gobble him up in a single bite! But at least he can help make the real fighters ready for the next peril.
