Marl'Tok goes over the papers.

A lot of inventory stuff, bills of lading, receipts for large orders, etc. Looks like the paper writer (much of it is in one hand, not all) was ordering a bunch of glassware, pots, copper tubes, powders, minerals, acids, and other stuff.

Vestas Faircoin

Seeing as there is nothing of interest in the desk, Vestas takes hold of Fang's leash and starts looking where the dog seems most worked up, trying to find anything unusual or of note.

"What is it Fang? Whatcha smelling?"

Vestas and Qwinsea discover a section of broken, loose floorboards with rubbish strewn about near it, near the busted old cabinet.

The pair spots small humanlike footprints in the dust and crumbled plaster near the broken floor area. Looks like two or more sets.

Qwinsea is quite certain he looked at this spot a bit earlier, before all the commotion, and the footprints were not present.

(OOC Qwinsea is not missing any items)

Muad'dib, examining the wrecked desk, discovers a hidden compartment in the back of the central drawer.

''I've found a bottle.''

Vestas Faircoin

"More than one of the little brighter, eh? I'm still thinking it best to put them off for a bit. What say you guys to our heading across the hallway?" says Vestas.

Roland assists Marl'Tok in looking over the papers. "They seem more of a bother at the moment, and besides Fang we are ill equipped to chase after them."

Kerphi the Illuminated

Human Monk 2 | Stats | Languages | Spells Prepared

Seeing some of the others examining papers, Kerphi enters and approaches, also getting a view of the documents. Whichever documents the other two seem to be done with, the scribe collects and sorts, trying to get the papers into some sort of better order. "These may be a bit vague and inscrutable now, but perhaps they could shed some light on the sort of work the Alchemist was doing."

Qwinsea tells Vestas "Have Fang get a really good smell of the little guy's hiding spot. Maybe as we search other rooms he can find similar hiding spots."

OoC: Continuing to search behind furniture and checking floor boards in whatever rooms we happen to be in.

Vestas Faircoin

With nod to Quinsea, Vestas leads the dog over to the lair and lets the animal get a good sniff while he gives it a better look.

EXPLORING THE ALCHEMIST'S HOUSE

the old study (Room# 3)

From what Marle'Tok and Kerphi can tell, the papers out of the central desk drawer represent inventory for alchemical work of some sort. But they don't know the nature of the processes or experiments. There's a lot of stuff, and it might not all be related to the same project.

Maud'Dib shows Vestas and the others the small phial he found in a secret compartment in the desk drawer, wrapped in cloth.

When Muad'dib lifts the little bottle near the window, the milky pink liquid inside brightens and lightens with a roseate glow.

The Baklunish burglar removes the stopper and delicately sniffs.

"Spice. Cinnamon, and something I can't place."

He replaces the plug.

Fang smells about, and Mellyn helps Qwinsea search, but the team finds no more hidden doors or loose boards in this room.

At Vestas's suggestion, the party (or some of it) moves across the hall into the opposite room (#2), fronting the building.

This room, around the same size as the large office/study where the group found the desk and weird potion(?) bottle, features several intact hardwood shelves mounted on the walls and others that have fallen to the floor, leaving empty brackets. A heap of books lies on the floorboards to the right of the door as you come in.

The light is pretty good, through the windows across the room, but shadows linger in corners and under the standing shelves.

The air smells of dust and mildew.

Kerphi the Illuminated

Human Monk 2 | Stats | Languages | Spells Prepared

Kerphi, who has collected the papers from the prior room in his pack, immediately focuses on the books in this new room, reading their spines and opening their covers in the hopes of ascertaining their contents.

A careful search of the room (#2) reveals no secret doors or hidden spaces.

Kerphi sorts and stacks the books, fourteen in all. He has to clean off cobwebs, brush away rat droppings, and scrape off mildew to read the title pages over half the volumes, and even then, most of the manuscripts are too damaged to read more than a little. From what he can make out, the collection covers–or covered– a variety of topics, from history to romantic poetry.

Three books, well-bound in tooled leather, bear titles printed on their spines. These survivors have parchment, not paper, pages, and remain quite legible. The monk need only blow away some dust.

The Magical Properties of Gemstones

by Tenser the Mage

The Magical Properties of Herbs and Flowers

by Tenser the Mage

The Metaphysics of Mathematics

by Nystul the Mage

These three might be worth something to a sage or collector.

In the third book, Kerphi finds tucked a torn triangle of yellowed and stained paper (not parchment, like the book's pages) with some almost entirely illegible squiggles and inky blurs on it. The only words Kerphi can make out are 'beyond skeletons.'
