Previously...

Trapped. Four of you with no memories of anything but your own names. A madhouse gone mad. Monsters around every corner and all around is the Mist. Horrid, thick, clinging yellow mist. There is no way out, the survivors in the Chapel tell you. So you, who have been robbed of all but the clothes on your backs, the gear in your cells, and your own barely-recalled names, set forth to find a way.

 

The going is slow and danger lurks in every corridor, but slowly and surely you hack, scheme, plot, and forge a path through the dangers of the Briarstone Asylum. Now, on the far side of the building in the East Ward, you have made yet another gruesome discovery: a human being who dies in his sleep before your very eyes is resurrected mere moments later as a hideous, ravenous ghoul.

Certainly there can be no salvation for the hapless wretch, still bound to the bed in which he died, but perhaps you can find some answers before quelling his relentless hunger...


Dr. Creed offers up a portion of ghoulflesh from another of the monsters which the party has recently dispatched in the hallway outside. The creature’s mouth rips into the flesh immediately, eyes rolling around in their sockets as it savors the pungent, unsavory meal.  Meanwhile, the others ply it with questions.

“Goooood meat.  Very good” the ghoul says, blood dribbling from its mouth as it speaks.  “Yes, yesss… I talk now.”

Turning to Hunnan first, he says “yess.  Understand just fine.  But rather eat than talk!  Always rather eat…”

Then he turns back to the Doctor and Sophia.

“Don’t know.  Dream.  Same dream.  Had it many times, yessss.  Many, many times since.  Always in city.  Yellow.  Lots’a yellow.  Fog all ‘round.  Then He shows up.  All long fingers and tattered ribbons.  Scary man.  Chases me through the fog and the city.”

“No other meat besides you come near” he says in response to Hunnan.  “Always same dream too.”

Turning to the Doctor, he answers “Me Jeprin.  Jeprin… Mears, yes, Mears.  Not know why tied here.  Not know what happening either.  Just know… hungerrrrr.”

His eyes rove over the Doctor’s form eagerly, a feral look rising in his evil expression.

“You kind man, set me free?  So hungry, yes, Jeprin soooo hungry…”

Sophia looked at the Doc and shook her head "NO!" at the suggestion to free the ghoul. Not that Doc Creed was likely considering it, but still! 

"He's got nothing else for us. Let's put him out of his misery." Sophia replied, then swung with her glaive.

Oddly familiar, which in and of itself is uncomfortable to say the least.

 

You've still got to find a way to quell this mist, though. The strange fog-spewing remains of the Administrator that you found in her office seems to have been a clue, but you're still not sure what to make of it. There have been no other such creatures so far, and the fog pouring from her mouth had taken on multiple hues, not the sickly yellow of the mist breathing against the windows outside.

 

 

 

 

 

 


A sudden whoosh sweeps through the room without warning. Sparkling light dances around the edge of your vision, and suddenly, where only four of you had been standing, there now appears a fifth figure. This one is humanoid in shape, but decidedly not human in nature. The rounded ears protruding from the tops of its head and the long, ropy tail are a dead giveaway.

 

The creature appears to be carrying a staff, a pack on its back, and looks extremely befuddled.

“Bloody” Lora, shell-shocked fighter

Lora immediately turns her falchion on the newcomer. "Another enemy!" she declares. "Who are you? Speak— explain yourself, or I will run you through where you stand." Despite the aggressive tone of her speech, her words are spoken calmly and matter-of-factly, without apparent malice or rancor.

Description

About 5'8", Lora has long, dirty red hair that hangs in front of her eyes and her large forehead. Her nose and teeth are pronounced, and her chin is snug. Her skin is light brown. Her stomach has an obvious bulge, like she is pregnant, and a distinctive scar that runs all the way up to her sternum. She wears shiny metal armor of interlocking scales, a small metal shield, and she carries a large and curved sword in both hands. She seems very taciturn and distant, like she is in shock, or not all there, mentally.

Fighting to keep the contains of his stomach within the stomach, Jax takes a quick deep breath before responding. His red beady eyes looks at the woman with curiosity.

He gives the grumpy woman a quick bow. "I am Jax the Chronicler. I was traveling with another group misfortunate souls caught up in the asylum supernatural events when I was teleported here."

Pulling out his journal and pen. " If I was an enemy, my currently sheathed weapon would be unsheathed and in my hand. Now that I have introduced myself, please feel free to introduce yourselves." Holding his pen, he prepares to record everyone's name and description.

The sudden appearance of the ratfolk is a bit of a shock, but Hunnan quickly composes herself. This Jax's reasoning for why he should be trusted was not entirely logical, but distrusting him over that seemed more than a little unfair. "I am Hunnan," She says. "You say you were with another group in the asuylum? Do you have any idea where specifically you came from?" If there was a second group active, it would be a good idea to find them as soon as possible. Safety in numbers after all.

The doctor seems to barely notice the arrival of the newcomer, or at least doesn't immediately acknowledge him.

For several long moments he just stares at the remains of the ghoul after Sophia's glaive removes most of its head. The faintest smile is just noticeable on the Doctor's face. He looks deeply and eerily satisfied.

The Doctor finally drags his vision away from the spectacle and over to Jax.

"Jax, is it?" he says, slowly. His eyes are lifeless and look a touch crazed before he suddenly snaps out of his reverie.

The Doctpr flips his rifle over to his off hand and steps forward, offering the newcomer a handshake. He seems to take the oddness of Jax's sudden appearance in stride. It is obvious his sensibilities have been stretched near to the breaking point.

"Walt Creed", the tall doctor says in a well-practiced and professional tone, as though whatever brief spell that held him has lapsed.

Hunna nods. "We've met with others, maybe your old group will find them as well. For now, we're trying to find our way out of this asylum. We'd be happy to have you accompany us?" If the ratfolk was another doppleganger, best to keep him close where they could see him change.

"Those aren't humans", the doctor replies, retracting his offered hand with the subtlest sneer.

"Unless, of course you refer to some humans the doppelgangers haven't gotten to yet."

He checks the alchemical port on his long gun.

"We should keep moving," the doctor says to the group. "I imagine Jax should probably remain with us, at least until he proves adversarial... Is anyone in disagreement?"

"Any information you have will be very useful, so please don't refrain from sharing. We know little about this anomaly, ourselves." the doctor adds, addressing Jax again. He draws out the strangely ornate shortsword with the red pommel carved in the shape of a cardinal and slowly begins proceeding further down the corridor.

"The doctor is right. Most of these entities can change shape at a whim. They seem limited to about human size, but outside of that, their ability to shapeshift seems unlimited. “Bloody” Lora, shell-shocked fighter

Description

About 5'8", Lora has long, dirty red hair that hangs in front of her eyes and her large forehead. Her nose and teeth are pronounced, and her chin is snug. Her skin is light brown. Her stomach has an obvious bulge, like she is pregnant, and a distinctive scar that runs all the way up to her sternum. She wears shiny metal armor of interlocking scales, a small metal shield, and she carries a large and curved sword in both hands. She seems very taciturn and distant, like she is in shock, or not all there, mentally.

“Baby” appears to be an aberration, a warped creature with long, spindly crab legs and the head of a human infant.

Once the group decides to get moving again, Lora takes her position leading the group. She proceeds down the corridor, past where they recently fought the zombies. As she goes, a tiny crablike creature with a baby's head appears from somewhere inside her clothing and follows her.

(OOC) Baby emerges from hibernation and follows Lora.

Stepping carefully over what remains of the ghoul you dispatched just past the rooms where you met the unfortunate Jeprin, you come to another set of doors lining the same wall as the last. Only this time there are at least four that you can see by Hunnan's flickering torchlight.

 

They are all shut, though the window on the top section of the nearest door is shattered.

 

Nothing stirs. No noise can be heard, save for the perpetual sigh of the mist leaning against the walls outside. The relative stillness in the wake of the bizarre and obscenity you've just witnessed is unsettling to say the least.
