Sketvid was a big man, but he came from a people who were big in size and stature. He was surprised to see so many big people here in this place. This Thordin was taller even than he. The man who had the fancy clothes and strange hat was tall, as was the woman who had been talking to him. There were half-orcs amongst the Tribes and she had the look, which would explain her size. The other one, Balthoz was large too. Even the dwarf, not tall but mighty in the way of his people. This place was not what he expected, at all. "Many strange people here.", he says, looking down at the dwarf Yod. "I heard you speak of your ancestors before. This is good. It is good to honor those that came before, because their spirits are here and can see what we do. Some of my people say they can talk to their spirits, but I have never heard them. Someday, if I honor them enough they will make their will known to me. Do the spirits speak to you?" He responds, "The dwarven people are full of traditions that honor the past. Usually, lessons are passed down from generation to generation through stories. We do believe in honoring the dwarves who came before us so that we can repeat our greatness and avoid problems. There are some among my people who talk directly to their spirits. I feel like they speak to us more than we realize. Like this Morak Ur’gray fellow from Nightstone. His name kept coming up over and over again. I figure it ain't just dumb luck, that someone is telling me something. And there are times in a fight, I can feel them watching over me, showing me what to do. That's gotta be my ancestors working through me." The dwarf isn't exactly explaining everything, but it's close enough to the truth. He just left out the part about the dead people yapping in his ear, but no one wants to hear that. He then asks, "How about your tribe? Do you have ancestral traditions?" It's clearly someone who's in need of liquid courage. She's on the other side of the room shortly, picking up her violin where she'd been sitting with Garoth, Qu, and Zhasi are at. With a nod to them she puts the violin at her chin. She is not performer looking for coin or make a name for herself. She is not grandstanding or trying to be the center of attention, to bring all eyes on her. Still, the sound she plays is... good. It creates a mood in the room, one that aims to lift everyone up if just a bit. It's not the kind of song that demands a dance, yet it is certainly music to tap one's foot to. Duala doesn't sing, doesn't give a speech, she just plays, finding a good balance between getting some practice in and making a tune that doesn't take from anyone else. Already she hadn't acted as she appeared, a tough-looking woman in chainmail. Not playing a fine instrument well, she does appear a contradiction, but if Duala is aware of it she doesn't care or doesn't show it. She listens further to the exchange between Sassamon and Duala, the young urchin girl also making the suggestion to speak with a cleric. "Zhasi was it? Thank you, I think I shall...perhaps will be better then getting tangled up with whatever the others are on about...this Zhasi is not in that group as well is he?" Ezra asks as she begins rolling up her map and putting it back into the map case to move tables. She plucks a piece of seed bread up and pops the sweet into her mouth afterwards as she continues putting her map tools away. Since giving his chair by the fire to Zhasi, his body temperature has comfortably moderated, and the vintage has started to warm his insides and fuzzy his head. The tavern was much rowdier and louder than the merchant inn where he had been staying in Daggerford, but here was much more entertaining. When Duala starts to play well, his smile broadens. 'What another cultured surprise for an orc,' he thought. 'If only I had my lute, I would join her.' But, he had left his lute at home, and normally did not play for strangers. After listening for awhile, it dawns on the teenager that Duala played for herself. He had only learned to play for a tutor or his family. But there Duala was, playing for herself. The song catches Thordin’s ears, enthralling him. He follows it to the source and leans on his weapon as he lets the notes lift his soul. Music was a thing he liked but had trouble making himself. His teacher told him though that talent was merely a starting point. With enough time and effort he could perform well, but he dismissed that as a joke. Duala looks to Thordin, or more accurately turns her head upwards to look at him. She's tall, but not near as tall as he. "Not at all. Nothing so fancy as that, just play because it makes me better than just a sword and shield, and because it's fun." She continues to play, but slows down a little to multitask, not able to play perfectly and speak at the same time, which is fine by her own standards. "Just like anything worth doing, a little practice goes a long way. Doubt you'll ever hear my name spoken of for my music though, I've neither the ambition nor time, but I can at least make a tune for a few people warming up with food and drink now and then." Although she's certainly being humble, it doesn't sound like she's being shy or bashful either. For her, it's a hobby, something to practice it, but not necessarily something she intends to master. I'm not sure how to make you understand. She remembers the analogy Lidda gave of the burning building, and places a hand on top of hers. "You were right, I think...the mission is to save lives...I cannot do that if I'm dead...or...more importantly, sometimes...overzealous. Fire can either raze a house to the ground or" nodding at the fireplace, "keep the ones inside warm...the fire itself has not changed its destructive nature, it only needs a little...restraint." She looks over to the large Giant Foundling getting steadily drunker by the barrel, and remembered her own words. A giant's way of life is found in the subjugation of others, the only shackles large to hold them is death. She could feel the slightest hint of...pity. She had wanted so badly to prevent others from loosing their families, but she hadn't considered those like him whose family is Giant. Would he burn with the same vengeance towards her that she does against his kin? I cannot spare everyone, not their lives or those they've made their lives. The mission comes first. "I am ready.
