Thoz didn't really know why he had shown this woman his scaring. The term 'olive branch' was foreign to him, but the thought that indulging her curiosity might be helpful in the long run. Someone so personable taking an interest in him would keep detractors from getting too aggressive.

"It is not an imitation or adaptation. It marks me as something cast off... something that sometimes precedes calamity." he chuckles to himself.

I just improvised the rune since it's a niche concept and probably doesn't have a magical aspect to it.

The door rattled for a couple of seconds until it was yanked open and then slammed shut by a shivering figure. His clothes would be considered of fine care if they weren't so heavily layered, including what looked like a good quality sleeping pack that had been cut into a makeshift poncho as well as other cloth that had been layered on top of that. The man took shuddering and shivering steps towards the fire, not even saying a word to anyone else for a couple of moments. His lips were blue, his teeth were chattering and his body was shaking uncontrollably.

He remembered when he was a teen and had been with one of his masters. He had seen a man leaning against a wall, covered in sweat who had stated "This isn't hot. I don't know what word this is, but hot does not express the heat enough." At the time he had snickered at the man behind his hand, it had been early spring. But now he knew. THIS was cold. So cold that the word cold seemed to lack the ability to explain what he felt deep into his bones. And then as the fire heated up his hands and body he could feel PAIN of the cold leaving his body as if the white fluff that had landed on him had somehow turned into invisible barbed needles being extracted by the flame. Zhasi's focus was on the heat of the fire for a long time before he even realized that he was in a crowd of people.

"I apologize for my manners." He stated in a deep but soft voice. "I am from far away and have never encountered the white powder that this region seems to have fall from the sky. I didn't know it turned into water, so it ruined my map. And without a map, I was left wandering sorely unprepared. I will need to go purchase more adequate clothing for this region... but I will do that after I've had a warm meal and some time away from the strange sky cotton."

Once presented with the menu, he orders "Some of the noodles if they are served hot, as well as the hot cider. Thank you for your kindness and patience." He then turns to Garon. "Follower of Chauntea," He states slightly formally with a slight nod to Garon. "Might I ask that you share your goddess's kindly nature and request to sit at your table?... It's nearest to the fire." He then also gives a nod to the others around the table, showing that he sees the two of them, but with no available holy symbols, he has nothing to speak to them by.

"Who keeps opening the damn door?" 'The rabbit' mutters into her seedcake when her own food arrives, which she focuses more on eating than responding until she's through most of it.  Something about the crowding of the inn seems to put a dent in her earlier cheer, a frown forming over her face, but her voice, when she speaks again, remains rather pleasant, bordering sing-song.

"But anyway, fair halfling, dwarf, other interlopers such as myself...I've found in this world it does you no good to assume all thises or all thatses are the same when it comes to fighting them.  Goblins for instance? I've seen some that scatter if you fart in a campfire, but then the next day their elder brother could come by and you have to fight that little bastard all the way to a bridge because he knows how to use a hatchet and isn't scared of decent folk.  I've also known a drummer goblin named Rufus who wouldn't hurt a baby if you put one in front of him and had the child hold a bag of gold.  Too focused on banging on his drums, I tell you..."

The rabbit then chugs a good bit of her drink, letting out a sigh as the cider warms her innards. "You can have your alcohols, your elven pretentious juices, but I tell you, nothing better than fruit ciders that's not hard enough to get you acting stupid, but hot enough to make you forget about the winds outside."

 

"But see, what I said about goblins also applies to other...thingses. Like giants." her eyes narrow some. "I've heard stories about stupid ones, clever ones, fierce warriors, cunning monsters, so many different things I can't get a good read on them. And giants are, literally, a much bigger problem than goblins. If I've got The Order's work to do, and I do in fact have Gauntlet work to be done, I'll gladly hear anyone's talk of what they know. Or even team up. It'll help me slay them giants all the better."

 

Now, this harengon is...well.. clearly a rabbit. And while she bluffed her way through cardplaying, there was something dangerous in how she--with complete seriousness- explained what she was looking for and what she planned to do to them. Some actual truth laid bare.

“My words,” Qu said. | ‘My thoughts, Qu thought. | My actions . . .


Qu nodded to the others, as he continued tasting his grapes and cheese and hardbread. "As I said, I am based in Waterdeep, but I am from, well, here," he said, reaching back to tap himself in the shell. "I carry my home with me. If you are going that way, though, perhaps we can travel together tomorrow, Garon. My people are fishermen, and, well, tend to live in more tropical regions, but I have been in Waterdeep for a while; I am sorry to say, Duala, if you seek to test yourself against the cold you are several months too late. It is almost freezing out, now; if it weren't for the wind, there would likely be people out there bathing in the sun, it is so balmy and warm. Well, not so much sun bathing, due to the sleet, but you understand." He chuckles a bit to himself at the thought.

Perhaps a bit more kindly, he observes, "Your life was hard, but I suspect you are still fighting a battle that is already over. You know, it is perfectly acceptable to relax, to accept a little of the fire's warmth, and the goodness that is, instead of test and prepare yourself for the worst that you left behind." He munches a bit more on the hardbread.

At about that time, the freezing Yuan-Ti approaches. Qu raises his glass to the man, and nods encouragingly at a chair. "Come, yes, have some cheese and hardbread. Warm yourself. I am Qu, this is Garon and Duala. How may we call you, sir?"

Sassamona doesn't love being called "young one," and her face contorts in puzzlement as she decides if she should take offense. Luckily, she hears Sketvid's offer before she can do anything rash. She looks at his sword, then glances at the glorified stickquarterstaff that she uses as a weapon. It's no choice at all, really. "Let's do it!" she says. "Those goblins won't know what hit 'em."

 

She scooches her chair to the side to make room for Balthoz; it's the closest thing to an apology for her earlier outburst that she can manage. "Yeah, adventure, gettin' paid to help people. That's what it's all about," she says to him. She doesn't speak when he shows his rune scar; she just stares and wishes she had something that cool on her body.

 

"So you are a giant hunter," she says to Tempest. She starts pestering her with questions. "Have you slain a giant? How big was it? What happens when you fart into a campfire? And what's this work Order thing you do?"

 

Then Sassamona overhears the words "without a map" and her mind goes into overdrive. 'I have a map!' She leans down and digs through her backpack, a currently wet, canvas sack with mismatched straps sewn on. She pulls a small, rectangular tin out of the bag and shouts, "I gotchu!" as she throws the tin across the room at Zhasi.

Inside the tin is a map...

...of Waterdeep. It's sticky and stained in places, well used, and heavily marked up in a childish scrawl, with several lines and circles forming a network of sorts centered on the Dock Ward.

"Just toss it back when you're done," she adds, quite pleased with her good deed.

Tempest declines to answer one of the three questions directly, "And Not a work order; I'm not any of those plebian traders down at the docks... I work FOR the Order. Of the Gauntlet. I am the one and only protégé of Sir Danerez Acheron, a White Hawk among the Knights." She just named a middling rank among the Knights, without fluttering an eyelash. "In any case, I've heard rumblings of Giant activity up here in the north, and I've taken it upon myself to help deal with it, being a freshly ordained Chevall, myself."

Zhasi nods at the three as Qu gives their names. "I am called Zhasi, a priest of Re-Horakhty, one of the hem-netjer-wab." He gives them a slightly apologetic smile. "I apologize, I do not proselytize, it's been a while since I've spoken with others, and seeing the religious symbol on... Garon, I believe? Well, I felt it best to put my cards on the table so to speak. Might I ask, what town are we in currently?" With that question Zhasi proceeds to blow air into his hands to warm them up as he sits near the fire and attempts to warm up still.

Thoz' comment causes Lidda to snap out of the her enthusiasm-triggered daze. cast off? calamity? She finally notices that there is something off about his skin. Looking up, she notices that the face under the hood is not a human, as she first assumed.

"You're... not a human?" she asks, and immediately puts a hand on her mouth. "Oh, I am very sorry. Please forgive me. I forgot it is impolite to ask."

The haregon speaks up, saving her from some an awkward moment of embarrassment. She quickly returns to her chair, climbs up and sits down, listening to the rabbit-like person speak.

"I would love to meet this drummer Rufus you speak of," she smiles, "It is a good reminder that giants, goblins and other races have much variety among them. It does impose something a moral conundrum: If someone is willing to pay for each dead goblin or giant, they probably don't care about the mindset of the individual people. I, however, do care. I will not hesitate to defend myself or others, but I'm unwilling to wade into a village, whether it is goblins or giants, and kill their children. Just a hypothetical, of course. I'm not eager to get anywhere close to a giant village unless I know it is completely safe."

Sassamona's input confuses Lidda a fair bit. I thought I had her figured out, but she defies my expectations times and times again. And then she meets some of them, confusing me further. Perhaps it is unwise to put her in some predefined category. Maybe I can make her tell a bit more about herself?

"It sounds like you have plenty of experience fighting, Sassamona. May I ask who you learned it from?"

Garon nods at the half-orc's comments, not really knowing how to explore without digging too deep in a common room. And to Qu's offer to travel together, he replies, "that would be excellent. Unfortunately, the roads are best traveled in groups."

He sips from his silver cup and watches another traveler enter the tavern. This one exotically dressed with reptilian skin. He tries to cover his surprise when the stranger approaches him and asks to join his table, because he is a follower of Chauntea.

After a bit of shock, the young, tall man stands up from the best chair positioned near the fireplace. "Please join us. And, take my chair. I'm well-cooked by the fire, and you look like you need warmth." At well over six feet tall with broad-shoulders and a muscular physique of well-fed youth, he maneuvers his big frame around the others to take another chair at their table, which is further from the fireplace. Shiny chain mail peeks out from the sleeves of a fashionably new woolen tunic, which is belted with a sheathed longsword. An amulet of Chauntea hangs from his neck depicting a blooming rose over a field of wheat. A wink of gold can be spotted on his left middle finger. Carrying his silver cup in his right hand, he sets it down in front of his new chair once he settles.

Garon nods when Qu introduces him to Zhasi and replies to the follower of Re-Horakhty, "This is Daggerford, Zhasi, in the Delimbiyr Vale. The lord of these lands is Morwen, Duchess of Daggerford. Where are you traveling from and to?"

When Lidda mentions that Balthoz is not a human, Sassamona twists down to look up under his hood, almost pressing her cheek to the table. "Woah," she mumbles and sits back up straight. 'I haven't seen a hobgoblin in a long time.'

 

She listens to Tempest's reply. She doesn't know what "plebian" means, it sounds like a dig on dock workers. "I didn't know a hawk and a rabbit could be friends," she says, snippily.

 

"I learned fightin' from me, kid." Sassamona answers Lidda's question with a hint of pride. She stares at the halfling for a bit in contemplation. 'This lady sounds wicked smart,' she thinks. 'Maybe she knows about that alchemy thing...' Continuing to speak to Lidda, she says, "You eva' heard of the Order of the Sun Soul?"

Sassamona is an interesting person, that's for sure, Lidda thinks as she listens to the somewhat flighty girl talk. When she is asked about the Order of the Sun Soul, Lidda looks thoughtful for a few moments.

"The name faintly rings a bell, but I can't recall any details. I'm not entirely certain I have actually heard of it. It is just as likely that I'm associating something I've heard in a different context. The words 'Order', 'Sun' and 'Soul' aren't exactly uncommon. Does the order have a connection to Sune?"

The little red-furred weasel motioned to the menu, ordering up another hit of liquid warmth. "Hmm...I don't think so. I think you've had enough." the responsible bartender ensured. Of course, she was a little biased against celestial familiars after a certain incident a few months back. A crab, an octopus, and a poisonous snake had walked into the bar, ordered the most expensive food and drinks, then dine-and-dashed. As far as she was concerned, this little weasel was of the same ilk.

The mink was astonished and outraged, pounding its little fist inaudibly. *bang*bang*bang* It tried to explain how the woman had misjudged his character, but it all fell on deaf ears. Not many humans spoke weasel, after all. A crusty old salt on the stool next door, already 77 sheets to the wind, nonetheless mumbled out "..Aww come on Gladys, don't be stingy...give the little halfling girl her drink..." his drunk and mottled eyes in a perma-wince from jaundice, hampering his vision.

Meanwhile the Professor's consciousness returned, and like the great artist-inventors of old, her dreams had revealed a new solution to the problem of Lady Luck's challenge. "The pillar has chosen obstinance." Crisp announced, to no one and to everyone. "But just as a skilled horologist recalibrates the clock's mechanisms, so too shall I, Professor Crisp, rearrange this puzzles spatial parameters! Behold, Milf's Incognito Inversion!"

Her stance widened and she squatted a good foot downwards. With her hands outstretched towards the pillar gesticulating with maximum intensity, she grunted and mumbled with the tongue of a dragon *𐎋𐎁𐎎𐎍𐎉𐎐𐎃𐎍𐎂𐎉𐎂𐎉* until a burst of rainbow arc'ed from her fingertips. To everyone but the weasel's surprise, the pillar shuddered in response! Like a courtier on a springday plucking the most handsome violet from the garden, the pillar was uprooted from the tavern floor into the air, shrouded in a cloud of all colors and seemingly under the power of the one-and-only Crisp. Slowly the massive article rotated, the hundreds of signatures on top coming closer and closer to Crisp's waiting pen.

Crisp seemed to revere problem-solving well above how ridiculous she looked or sounded...of course some might recognize her for the fraud she was. (DC 14 investigation, that was an illusion)

With her side quest completed, she turned to the popular conversation. "Nightstone! That keeper of secrets nestled in the valley to the north...yes, my quest carries me to it as well. But no, not for goblins, I seek an audience with the very Stone itself! For too long, the earth has kept its secrets buried...but I, Professor Crisp, have cracked the silty marble's deepest obsessions, studied its chiseled desires, probed its most punishing fissures of regrets! The Nightstone will have no choice but to enter my parley, where my next words will flow like daggers in the forgeman's fires...crafting the stone's response to my very will!" she held aloft a formal, official, document as if that explained everything.

Of course, no one had any clue what she was talking about.

Except maybe that crusty old salt at the bar, who had made fast friends with the red-furred and rather out of sorts Great Vicario.

The dwarf looks down in his glass, swirling the alcohol around the bottom. The conversation weaves around him, and he just listens absorbing what the strangers are saying. He finally says, "Looks like a lot of folks heading to Nightstone."

Turning to Tempest, he asks, "How did you get involved with the Order of the Gauntlet. They don't show up in Mirabar, where I'm from. At least, they aren't letting people know they are there."

Hearing Mona mention her order, Yod looks confused and says, "I ain't never heard of no Sun Soul. What's that? Something with Lathander?"

Looking over at the elf who tried is using some kind of magic on pillar after falling at its base. The dwarf has never been much for magic and decides to keep quiet.

Zhasi's lips purse as he thinks on Garon's comments. "I am from a city known as Rauthil, in the northern reaches of Mulhorand. It is several months' travel from there to here." Responds Zhasi. "As for where I'm going, I have no final destination; I'm searching for lost pieces of my people's history. This is leading me to Nightstone. A fellow traveler stated that the innkeeper in Nightstone had a habit of finding adventures and quests for those searching for something. If that's the case, he may have a lead on something I am in the search of." During this conversation, Zhasi casually slides the 'map of Waterdeep' back into its case. That was less than useful, but the woman's heart was in the right place.

"If I remember correctly, Daggerford wasn't more than a few days travel from my destination. Maybe my wanderings weren't as unfortunate as I had believed. Thank you for the -" That is when one of the serving ladies brings over the food and drink, completely distracting Zhasi from the conversation. "This smells wonderful, my thanks to you." And with that he takes a slow drink from the heated cider.

Similar to my own marks, but different. He frowns when the big hobgoblin speaks of calamity. "You say calamity? This is meaning big trouble, yes? Very big trouble. What do you know of calamity? Tell me." His gaze is intense, but not threatening.
