Issue #02 - The First Day is the Hardest

Khakhan

Recommended Posts

Ty begins with some easy warm-up stretches, then flows into some slow tai-chi style exercises. The style looks strong and predatory, a style that seems to fit and juxtapose his easy going nature and large stature.

Becks simply does a few stretches, then bounces on the balls of her feet. Neither of the two have picked up any type of weapon or equipment, and perhaps most unnerving, neither of them seems nervous about the fact.

They take out headsets and fit them over their ears, doing a quick sound check, and then lean casually against the wall. Enormous grins are plastered over their faces and they give a thumbs up to the group.

Becks calls over: "By the way, we took the liberty of bringing ya... your equipment and things." She indicates a few duffle bags and cases laid out neatly near to where the group has gathered. "Inside are some comm units as well. Might wanna put those on."

Ty's grin looks like it's about to swallow his head and he nods. "The simulation will start in a few. Rules are simple, capture the flag, bring it to your base, and stop us from doing it first. You can't really screw things up here, so don't worry if you guys have some bumps and stumbles. It's a training exercise, and a good way to figure out how your team interacts with each other. All failsafes are on, so don't worry about getting injured or injuring other folks."

Becks nods in agreement. "Word of advice- Ty can take a pummeling."

After a minute or two, walls and pillars and crates appear out of nowhere, thrusting up out of the ground apparently. Comprised of different sizes and configurations, they form a sort of obstacle course, obstructing your view of Ty and Becks. You notice a flag stand in a hexagonal platform near the center of the building, and a massive set of numbers appear floating in the air. 2 minutes until the match starts.

"Oh this sounds like it's going to be fun!" Hurrying to change after returning from class Gabby eagerly tags along with the others, now clad in simple gray shorts and a faded pink tshirt that declared 'I ❤️ San Francisco'. She gawks at the high tech training room as the older students explain how it all works-the bit about the injury prevention was especially interesting since she'd never really tried to test her full strength so this would be a rare chance. Then came the group huddle. Of course Megan had fire powers, that just fit too well. Although she had started to show a little behind her mask in their brief conversation earlier so maybe there was more to her than that. The new guy could do stuff with magnetism and was apparently a skater. Hubris was a cyborg?! That was awesome! And of course she already knew what Sarah could do. That just left her...

"So uh, I can fly. And I'm hard to hurt, and really strong." Her eyes start to drift away from the group as their opponents start warming up. "I could hold Ty...uh hold him down...that is, pin him on...so he can't get the flag, I mean." Gabby's cheeks turn crimson as she keeps digging the hole deeper, finally managing to stumble through her sentence. "Ohlookcommunits!" Latching on to a convenient distraction she heads over to the cases to start grabbing ear pieces for everyone.

As soon as he sees their headsets, he examines their magnetic materials and electronics.  The first thing he wants to do is shut them down and be able to track them if he loses sight of them.

After Gabriella hands out the headsets and get them in their ears, he says "testing.  Testing," with a big grin on this face.  Then adds, "oh, and I can fly, too."

When the walls start going up, he repeats the same analysis of the flag stand for magnetic materials wondering if he can just pull it to him.  "Remember.  I'm going for the flag."

Unsurprisingly Gabby doesn't get to hand off a communication device so much as have one snatched away from her when she gets to Megan. "Yeah whatever. Since it seems like everybody else can fly and **** I guess you guys'll do that and I sit back and what, make sure nobody takes the flag?"

That didn't sound like the most exciting thing but it sounded like an easy thing. Especially if Ty could just warp around or whatever Sarah was talking about. Let everybody else run around like idiots. "We got any way to keep track of where everyone is or what this place looks like or do we just yell over our headsets and hope for the best?"

Hubris.png.db4ae380db730e0541d032c40c579ba6.png Hubris Hammersmith - Iteration Hubris_Cowl_120.png.b03f514175701bab7e31e913e14de5c0.png

"I guess I'm the only one who really needs to gear up, huh?" Hubris hauls a silver case from the pile and sets it on a nearby shelf, thumbing the sensor to pop it open. The first thing she takes out is an oblong disk of grey, purple, and chrome, which she squishes, causing it to pop out into a full helmet. "Commlink?" she catches the tossed device and peers closely at it. Nodding, she slides open a small panel on the back of one of the 'horns', pulls out a very small cable from it and plugs that into the commlink before tucking cable and comm back in and shutting the panel. Integrating the comm to her own extant helmet tech.

Setting the helmet aside for a moment, she pulls out a baggy carbon hex-pattern bodysuit, missing one arm, and kicks off her shoes before stepping into the suit with its integrated boots. Once settled and toggle at the right wrist shrinks the whole thing over her workout clothes. Then a few armor panels over chest, shoulders, and hips. Finally, she pulls a cable from the collar, one with a plug about as long as her index finger. This she carefully lines up just behind her left ear, at some unseen port, before sliding it home with an audible click and wince.

Shaking off the neural link feedback, she picks up her helmet and turns to Megan. "They let people who can't fly come to this school? Weird." She closes the helmet on her head, and immediately her voice is only coming through on the comms. "Mike check. Good? Good. You go do your thing, I'll guard. Or we both can. And just in case we end up making this a thing, this," she gestures at herself in costume, "is Iteration."

The team discusses their battle plan as the timer ticks down, moving into their designated positions. The last few seconds tick off and a blaring klaxon echoes throughout the warehouse, signaling the start of the game.

Very quickly, they can see a massive shaggy shape bounding over the tops of the crates nearest the platform holding the flag. Ty is quickly making his way towards scoring an early point for his and Becks' team. Strangely though, Becks isn't anywhere the team can see her yet, seemingly holding back on the push for the flag.

Felix squints to find Becks with his magnetic sense.  He wants to fly between her and Ty and knock out their commlinks.  So, he's trying to plan his trajectory as if he was at the top of a half-pipe imagining the trick skating that he would do.  First, kill their coordination.  Then, go for the flag.

He can't get a fix on Becks for some reason, so he just goes for it.  The blonde boy flies off toward Ty and the flag looking like he rides an imaginary skateboard.  When he gets within thirty feet of Ty and where he last saw Becks, he emits an invisible electro-magnetic pulse targeting the commlinks of Ty and Becks, hopefully.  He continues his flight pretending to do skate tricks until he gets to the far end of the room.

Mechanics

Fly (Flight 5 (60 mph, 900 ft), Subtle 1) between Ty and where he last saw Becks keeping 25 feet away from Ty.

Electro-Magnetic Pulse: Selective Area Burst (30 ft) Simultaneous Nullify Electronics 8 (DC 18), (Flaws: Close Range) Subtle 1

Move-by Action

Fly into a far corner away from everyone

"Take care with comms. Unknown security, opposition has tech specialist." Seeing the Close Combat opponent heading directly for their flag, Iteration moves to protect it, arm shifting to blade-form but not igniting. A mental trigger and starting from that same arm a cascade of hexagonal flickers cross her body, each starting with a slight glow before shifting, first breaking up her outline then as the suit processes the environment, making her almost entirely invisible. All that's left is a shimmer, easy to miss in the heat of combat.

Reaching the flag, Hubris grabs it, holding it planted to the base, watching the approaching Ty, blade hilt warm with pre-ignition in her artificial hand.

Ty wasn't wasting any time, not that Megan thought he would. Especially not if he could warp around or whatever Sarah was going on about. What could Megan do about something like that? He probably could dodge like it was nothing. Maybe if she slowed him down a little? Or at least wait until he was closer before trying to light him up. They were told they couldn't really hurt anyone here and they couldn't really hurt Ty anyway. Guess they'd have to test that out.

Megan says a few short and foreign-sounding words and the heat around her hand spikes massively. Both the air around it and now Ty were starting to shimmer from the extreme heat that was being introduced to both. Big hairy guy like Ty, might not like that so much. Worth trying out at least, better than trying to nail a moving target and looking foolish by missing or something lame like that.

Sarah watched Ty appear, and wondered if he had "Stepped" to get there. Becks said that Ty could take a pummeling, and Sarah believed that.  But then, she had other things in her arsenal.  Hubris...Iteration moved to protect the flag, the new kid...did something she thought. Megan reached out to do something with fire.

What Sarah had was...her gun. As she floated into the air to get as best a line of sight in this simulation as possible she reached into per pocket and pulled out a sparkly pink shell from her Jacket and loaded it before levelling her wand on Ty.  Let's see how strong his mental defenses were? She then gently squeezed the trigger, the hammer slamming down into the prepared ritual while Sarah imposed her will upon the shell to activate. A bright pink blast spiraled through the air at the rather Shaggy RA.

Felix lets loose a burst of electromagnetic energy and is rewarded with an ear-splitting squeal a dozen feet to his left, roughly where he last saw Ty's shaggy form moving.

Hubris has the flag in hand and is watching Ty's approach when the feedback hits and for a brief moment thinks the EMP hit her systems as well, as the towering sophomore's form blurs and stutters like a digital tear before vanishing entirely. A split second later, the teen is back in view, roughly 50 feet from where he had been and has turned away to face Sarah.

A rippling wave of heat impacts at the same time as Sarah's magic charge impacts him. Ty stumbles for a second, but then shakes off both the effects, a long-toothed grin splitting his face. "Gonna have to try harder than that, ladies." His voice, already deep, practically rattles the walls in this form, sonorous and rich.

More disconcerting than all of that, however, was the fact that even with all of that happening, Becks still had made no appearance on the field.

Felix looked around for Becks.  Ty played the role of bait and bully antagonizing them referring to Felix as a lady or focusing his mockery on the girls who had the big guns.  Since Ty wore no magnetic materials, Felix couldn't really hurt him.  Unless...

Until now, Felix had only managed to give squirrels a seizure with his localized electromagnetic pulse (EMP).  Ty did say not to hold back, so he asked for it.  What's the worst that could happen?

The blonde-haired skater continued his tour of the perimeter of the Danger Room flying about 60 miles per hour away from Ty and away from where he last saw Becks.  Doesn't want to be near either of them.  Along the way he squints causing a small EMP inside Ty's head.  Might have an effect if anything was inside his head.

Sarah watched Ty flinch for a moment. He was able to shake it off, but Sarah was not sold.  She reached into Jacket, deep into the dimensional pocket and pulls another glowing pink shell.

She broke the breach and a faint magical whisp, all that remained from the previous spell fluttered out into the open air quickly dissipating as she loaded the new shell. Sarah scanned the warehouse in an attempt to find Becks...but her arm drew over to Ty again.

She took aim, trying to ignore his words. "Let's try this a second time." she said breathing out then squeezing the trigger, applying a bit of her will again as the hammer completed the ritual.

The spell didn't seem to do much. Who'd have figured something that hairy would be that good at rolling with the heat? Then again Ty probably smelled like BO and worse right now. Whatever. This place was probably letting him cheat anyway, that's what the deal was. Right! They were basically told that when they got started, this room was supposed to stop anybody from getting hurt too bad but how could it tell? But Ty'd been here before so he knew the rules, so this was all supposed to be... what? Some game? Something to prove how awesome Ty is and how everybody else sucks? Well it seemed like it was rigged to Megan and if she couldn't win she could try and prove how dumb it was. And definitely not because her one and only effort so far was brushed aside like it was nothing!

Her spell was still out there anyway, even if it didn't do anything to Ty. A quick chant and a flick of the wrist and that hot spot ignites the air. It shoots out towards Ty, rolling up and over the boxes and crates and all the stuff piled around. As it got closer to Ty it started rising into the air some distance, a wall of flame snaking its way across the warehouse and running into Ty. Sure Ty could blink around like nothing but if this was supposed to be real or whatever he wouldn't choose to stand in fire even if there was no way it was going to actually hurt him. And if he did, well, then it proved Megan's point that this was some dumb put-on!

Hubris_Cowl_120.png.b03f514175701bab7e31e913e14de5c0.png  IterationHubris Hammersmith

Timing is everything. Iteration shifts her hilt in her hand, adjusting herself slightly for if Ty makes a sudden lunge for the flag, while she mentally triggers her suit's advanced vision features. In a movie, it would show her vision being overlaid with blotchy blue and black, with blooms of red, orange, yellow, and white for heat. This...isn't quite like that. Her Cowl passes visual information through the plug behind her ear, which channels to her visual cortex. Thanks to her mother's tinkering, that part of her brain is better...designed to be better...at processing all kinds of information. No clunky overlay. Just seamless integration.

She takes a moment to sweep the battlefield, looking for Becks. She's guessing that the older woman could make some kind of cloak against both vision and thermals, but maybe like Hubris she hadn't gone that far. Or maybe this was supposed to be a fair fight and she'd toned it down. But then, maybe it was a lesson in how much Young Supers had to learn and they were meant to lose. Her mind churns, assigning probabilities and following increasingly labyrinthine if/thens...

Mechanics

Remaining on the flag, spending my action activating the Sensor Cowl for Thermographic overlay.
