Act I: Welcome to Ravengro

Katrina: doesn't get you much of anything about Harrowstone other than the fact that is a prison that exists on the outskirts of Ravengro. Perhaps researching it further even at the local town hall would assist in coming up with better results.

Tal: Your 19 allows you to see while Gibbs and the mob are attempting to portray themselves as rough and tough, in reality they are scared not just of you but of Petros. This situation has truly spooked them.

New information has been added to Petros Lorrimor.

Kendra Lorrimor

Kendra stands breathing heavily, calming down herself from the intense rage she was thrown into. "Father Grimburrow will have choice words for them. Violating my father's sacred right to be buried to Kelemvor. The gall of such people."

spacer.png

However even as the rain and other obstacles block the path, the music and song begin once again and the funeral march continues. You can all note Gibbs standing off to the side staring everyone down from afar. The rest of the march down the eversleep is unimpeded by any rabble rousers or accusers to your mentor's lineage. As you come to the grave you notice several people waiting around sitting down as the fresh plot is overseen by two gravediggers that look exceptionally proud of themselves. "Best grave we've dug yet" they say to one another gaining a soft smile from Kendra as the funeral march makes its way to the plot. An individual that sticks out of the crowd is a well dressed man, he is wearing a suit and overcoat and slicked back hair. He looks delighted when you arrive nodding specifically at Kendra whose eyes seems to light up. She takes a step forward to greet him, but he shakes his head as Father Grimburrow is showing everyone to their seats. The pallbearers are instructed to load the casket on the wooden pallete which is attached to a crank device which looks like it is used to lower the casket gently into the grave. Father Grimburrow takes to the makeshift stand they have set up and calls for everyone to be seated and quiet.

Father Grimburrow

"Today we are gathered here to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of a great man. Petros Lorrimor was a friend, a teacher, and a father, but more importantly he was a man. Like all men, Kelemvor eventually comes to claim them into his holy kingdom of the dead. We say goodbye to such a man and pray for his protection and to remain untainted by those that would blasphemy such values! And so we sanctify as such." Father Grimburrow takes a moment to grab a handful of dirt and lets it gently fall onto the casket. "Dust to dust." Everyone goes silent for a moment as Father Grimburrow mutters silent prayers. He raises a hand and the gravediggers nod as they begin to turn the winch. The singing and somber music resumes as Father Grimburrow stands silent looking downward in a sign of humility. The mood is too much to bare for Kendra who begins weeping into her hands.

Tal watches the ceremony impassively. Pretty words, maybe they'll help Kendra. Though she seemed pretty distracted by that fancy man. He wonders what their relationship is.

She sees as they walk, sees as they carry Petros to his hole. She sees the Gibbs, the fear in his heart. She sees the behatted man-thing. She sees his seeing of Kendra, and Kendra's in turn of he; infatuation, ever powerful, to overcome even the death of the beloved. Beautiful, and perhaps treacherous, though only time tells.

As she helps commit Petros to the earth, she stands beside the grave, gazing down into and beyond the thing. A time there was when death meant little to she, who knew only madness and cacophony. A time when the lives that passed her by were nought but fleeting flames obscured by endless sleet. Then, Petros. Then, the pokes and prods, the questions, the measurements. Then, the shadows, and the mists, to emerge... not whole, no, but not fractured, either.

A glorious ray of sunlight was Petros, heralding the long-delayed spring of her life. Now that beam of brilliance is gone, and winter's hold has returned, at least for now. She reaches into her cloak and produces another trinket, yes, this one a feather - a quill, in fact. Petros had written his notes on her with this quill, and so it is a symbol of her liberation, a gift upon her lucidity. She brings it to her lips and gives it a soft kiss before letting it fall into the grave, returned to its master. Again her tears join the rain as she turns and sits as bade by the old one.

Dolin reached the burial site late. He was at a distant location from the place when the letter of priest Javi Saviola arrived, an old of friend of Petros Lorrimor, asking him to attend the burial ceremony at his place. A request from Priest Saviola was a supreme command to Dolin. He stopped everything he was doing at once and marched at his fastest pace to the place. Desperate to arrive on time.

He faced an enormous distance on his shorts legs and some misfortunes along the way. Finally he arrived and barely in time. Dirty, sweaty and tired from the trip he yelled.

Stop the casket! Stop it! He approached the hole in the ground panting. I didn't pay my respects to the departed yet.

The feather was still there, wet from the rain and pasted flat to the casket, its crisp whiteness soiled with the dirt thrown upon it, that fast became a watery muck.  Before it, not two paces away, the diminutive Tabaxi stood transfixed, intensely clutching her glowing candle that bathed the coffin in light.   With one hand clasped over the other, she squeezed her fingers and clenched her jaw, as the tips of her claws dug into the back of the hand beneath and brought a sensation of pain that was bearable.  She was so mad, so hurt, her heart was thumping and the sombre music was dull beneath the blood throbbing in her ears... why had Gibbs interrupted them, why were people saying such mean things, why did he have to go to Harrowstone and die.  It couldn't have been natural causes, she would have heard if he was sick, why hadn't his daughter stopped him.  Her eyes flicked towards Kendra, thinking of the woman's enraged blathering about her father's rights and Grimburrow's choice words, it meant nothing, for now the daughter was mooning at some slickster.   Katrina wanted to scream and shout, to howl at the moon behind the pouring sky and dance frantically to loud music until her exhaustion overcame all the emotions she did not know what to do with.  She knew it was in her blood, it was what her people would have done, but that part of her had been mostly abandoned long ago, and in no small part thanks to Professor Lorrimor's sponsorship... so now she stood there wringing her hands and poking her palms, with a muffled tune of gloom mewling in her ears... then... there was a yell.

Her head snapped towards the hollering dwarf as if yanked by a chain, swiveling her so hard that she stumbled, nearly losing her footing in the sodden earth.  The fellow who appeared was a stranger, a strange dirty, sweaty, beard-faced and bleary-eyed boulder.  Who was he?  He demanded the winch be stopped so he could pay his respects, and in that moment, Katrina acted without thinking, darting toward the coffin, hand driving towards the feather and as she touched it she spoke a single word.  "Luminus"

Immediately the light jumped from the candle to the quill, and then she stepped back beside the dwarf, basking in the divine glow.  "Say your peace master dwarf" She declared, while not really having any authority to do so, but she assumed it anyway, and that jump and overstep it authority would have to be her own dance and shout.

The effect was more pronounced than he believed it would be. The crowd stopped in silence, all eyes turned to him with a mix of different sentiments. Some curious, some angry, some bored. Dolin used this time to stop at the border of funeral hole, just an inch from the limit. The crowd was waiting for the scene to play with eagerness. What would the strange dwarf do? What would he say? What was the reason for the interruption?

Dolin left them all very disappointed. He just bowed his neck and muttered a prayer in silence for a whole minute. His hands making holy signs while he was there, immersed in his prayer. Then he turned abruptly and left the hole for the rite to continue, he nodded to Father Grimburrow and mingled with the crowd to observe the remaining of the ceremony.

He was relieved. He fulfilled Saviola's request. His countenance brimmed with joy.

Nika Volkov

Once freed from her obligations to Petros and his casket, Nika became like Kendra's shadow, hovering near her weeping friend to offer support. So was it protection or jealousy that led her to glare daggers at the handsome man who had caught Kendra's eyes so? The sour attitude of Gibbs and his men are something Nika is all too familiar with. Their dour demeanor is something she can easily handle. But charming men taking Kendra's attention... catching a growl in her throat, Nika struggled to take her eyes from him, instead admiring Old Nan's and little Katrina's tributes.

Nika is not so fancy and gracious as these two. She came to Petros rough and broken; while he mended her, she is not a woman of words and light. She is rough and far more practical. While this strange dwarf says his prayer, Nika comes to the graves' side and takes a handful of dirt. First she touches it to her forehead, leaving a smudge, then to her lips. "May we protect your legacy." She whispers, dropping the dirt and the solemn vow onto the casket, with a glance back at Kendra.

"...thank you for making it in time." She adds as she goes to stand beside the dwarf, grateful for more hands on Petros' side. Given all that has happened, the more respectable they might seem, the better.

The sight of the casket slowly lowering down as everyone says their final goodbyes. You hear the lurch of the winch as the casket finally hits the bottom of the grave. Father Grimburrow nods as his prayer finishes. He looks solemn as the rain washes over the tent he is standing under. Father Grimburrow says a few closing prayters on the funeral and bids everyone to go ahead and live the life Petros would want them to live. With that notion, the funeral comes to an end and people start to clear out. As everyone disperses until it is only the five of you, Kendra, and the well dressed man from before. He walks with a sort of refineness to him. he greets you all with a small bow before turning to Kendra.

"I must say Kendra, Petros sure knew how to pick his day. Downtrodden pouring of rain, an angry mob, the man was always a bit of theatrics I was half expecting him to be disguised in the audience and reveal that he had played a particularly dastardly trick on all of us. "There is a moment of silence between this man and Kendra before Kendra breaks her composure into a bout of laughter and the two share a hug. A breaking to the storm of her mourning.

Kendra looks up to him, their hug lingering for a few moments longer than necessary before she releases him. "My father would be happy that his funeral was not a boring affair. As well as his friends and loved ones showing up from every corner of Ravenlift." She turns to look at all of you smiling, it mattered that you came. It mattered so much more that you all came.

"Kendra worried that you might not make it in time. But I knew any folk that Petros put his trust in would arrive. Excuse my manners, my name Adivion Adrissant. I work as the loremaster in Caliphas."

'Go and live,' the old one speaks. This does things in her thoughts. A memory. An embitterment. A rebuke. Petros say once. She emerges from the fog, pieces regathered, many eyes seeing the whole for the first time in sometime. Think, she can. Speak, she can. Remember, yes, but still she goes to Petros. Still she lingers in the university, frightening the students by being. She expects more questions, more prods, but there are none.

'Go,' Petros says. 'You can live your life, now.'

Strange, yes, that old humans can say such things as if life were a mere matter of choice. She lives as a mad, mumbling wastrel in the street not by choice, but consequence, no? Circumstance. Fortune. Fate. All words for the same notion - that, sometimes, life happens to you, not by you. Much thought has she given this instruction, and it is no more clear now than it was then.

Then the pretty one approaches, yes. 'Adivion.' Caliphas. A word she knows from the Vistani, a city of wealth. Coin did nothing to hide on him; she can taste it on him, hear it clink in his footsteps.

A mark in treachery's favor.

"Galena is I," she says, once the greeting ritual commences.

Now that Dolin fulfilled his promise, he was feeling weird there, after the end of the funeral. He didn't have a deeper connection with the departed. He had other things to do, evil to smite, wars to wage, a belly to feed. But it would look extremely awkward to leave now.

A little small talk would solve that problem, but he was not one specially gifted with conversational skills. Time to pull one of his endless Uncle Brolun's adages to save the day. A good target would be the man or the woman standing at this side. He was not so sure which sex it was, being so muscular and tall, and certainly somewhat ugly for a dwarf standard. But muscles were important to wage war, so that fact he could respect.

Ha! Han! He said to call attention to himself. Better dead than sorry. And that one clearly was not sorry. Pointing to the place where the departed was buried.

The final thud of the caused a sympathic lurch in her throat, as if a part of her too had just been abruptly jarred against and unexpected impact.  She blinked away tears, as she slips over near Kendra, shuffling awkwardly, and somewhat regretting her momentary "outburst".  Speaking with anyone seemed like it would be awkward and forced, even though they had something in common, ie a relationship with the dearly departed.  When the dark haired man approached, she was holding back a sign, waiting for the flirting and small talk to drown her as badly as the rain.  Then he said his name and her title and the little cat's ear's perked, twitching to hear what he might have to say for a moment before realizing he was awaiting introductions. She stepped in front of Kendra without paying any mind.

"Hello Loremaster Adivion Addrissant" She tested the name on her tongue, relishing his title a little before saying his name to see if it rang any bells.  "I am Scholar Katrina Volshebnika, of the University of Lepidstadt Order of Scribes, or as we like to call ourselves TULOOS." She chuckled amewsedly at what may have been an inside joke. "As Loremaster do you have a specialty, or are you more of a generalist, I would love to compare notes on some of the more recent research... I myself have been looking into how to combine both clerical and arcanum, I think the magics themselves may be interchangeable, particularly in the spheres of conjuration and nn...numerology" She paused, realizing that some may take talk of necromatic study less than favorably.   "Kendra?" She looked around, before realizing that she was standing directly in front of her. "Kendra, would it be too much to invite Lormaster Addrissant for tea?" She looked up to Kendra with massive green eyes, that somehow enlarged and begged both sympathy and acquiescence.

Nika Volkov

A buck-like snort comes from Nika at the dwarven man's comment. "Never for a day." She agrees. Meeting him had been like meeting a god to the farm girl; with his manor full of relics and arcane writings and instruments, it was something from a tall tale. That he actually saved her and didn't leave her floating in several different jars for the rest of her days was a blessing to the girl. After, she mostly heard rumors of him from the foresters and tall stories from Kendra during her monthly visits. "Our village has a custom when the dead pass, we drink and tell their stories, so they'll keep living another night with us. I take it you're in?" She asks, taking a stab based on the few dwarves she's met.

Still, even as she offers the man a drink, she can't not glare at the nearby man who was still talking to Kendra. Did he not mind that he was bothering the grieving?! Worse, it seems she knows him! A jealous fire smolders in her belly, but she dismisses it by scuffing the dirt with her boot. "A scholar. Great." She huffs.

Now that is a great idea, and a good custom to have. I could use a good drink. And It would be my absolute pleasure to honor the departed with a good old drinking night. Dolin said with his face beaming like a ray of light. Small talk achievement completed with success. And he still won a drinking night. He didn't think the result could be better.

He throw a glance to the new arrival, the refined man, whose eyes were all focused now. He didn't know what to think of the subject, but that is a problem for other occasion. Now it was time to drink until stupor, and that could take a while with his dwarven resilience. And with some luck, he could prove his worth in more ways than emptying beverages cups.

Adivion extends his hand to shake yours Katrina as you excitedly talk to him.

"Cheers fellow scholar Katrina, pleasure to meet you. I am very much inline with what the professor originally studied in Lepistradt, dangerous magic, necromancy, and defending against such arts. In Caliphas, we keep up to date on anything that might pose a threat to Ravenloft."

At the mention of tea Adivion smiles looking towards the other. He notes the comments from Nika wincing slightly for a moment before attempting to ignore them.

Kendra nods pointing towards the town. "A spot of tea or something harder for our guests sounds great after such a dreadful walk in the rain. I insist everyone come, you've traveled long and through such weather. Plus Mayor Hearthmount will be around to read the will. Knowing my father, I daresay the revelations of the day are not yet over."
