Draco gives a curse, but continues to focus on his magic. He does start to move to go around to the horses and wagon and hopefully drag the guard away from the creature. But he also wanted to know if there was any other magical auras around. If anyone around was casting a spell to do this, then he wanted to know, unless this was a curse. Then that would be a different issue altogether.

Actions

Standard: Maintain concentration on Detect Magic to find out more info

Move: Move south to go around the horses

And just encase it's needed.

When the driver fell to the floor of the wagon and the cape continued to float above him, Quim finally realized that he wasn't fighting an invisible foe. Whatever this was in front of him, was taking real hits from Ingrid's hammer.

He doubled his efforts, this time aiming for the meat of the cloak, intent on ripping it to shreds.

~ Citadel Forge, Wagon Chase  ~

~ Month 2, Day 6: Evening ~

Battle Map

Byran.png.46a5e29a685cc1c426f5d9e44015c0ca.pngspacer.png

Coalscuttle mounts a counter attack and valiantly swings her sword at the cloak-like creature. Unfortunately, the attack misses.

Draco continues to concentrate on his spell even as he slowly guides his horse South, around the wagon and other horses. As the auras in the area come into focus, he sees auras around his own blade and the one Coalscuttle carries. In addition, he seems a large, fist-sized object shaped like a large acorn radiating a faint aura of conjuration and enchantment from Coal's pack. Beyond that, there isn't much to be seen, and nothing coming from the monster before him.

Quim seems to have trouble setting his feet as he stands awkwardly on top of the wagon, and the subsequent strike leaves no fear in the creature's heart after it misses.

Coalscuttle

The counterattack missed, so Coals shifts the grip on her blade and readies her shield.

"You made a mistake," she says to the creature. "I missed because I did not wish to hit your victim. Now, I have no such issue."

With that, she struck out at the flying beast.

OOC

Coals spends her move action readying her shield.

EDIT:
Critical confirmation

EDIT 2:
Longsword damgae

EDIT 3: ...So, this hasn't quite worked the way I expected. The roll is a 3, so add 3 and multiply by 2 is 12. If the Cloaker is evil, add 2 to that damage.

EDIT 4: Apparently Smite Evil is multiplied on a critical hit. So that's 4 extra damage instead.

Familiar Actions

Bee scampers over to the side of the fallen guard and spends two of Coals' LOH uses to use "Lay On Paws".

~ Month 2, Day 6: Evening ~

Battle Map

Byran.png.46a5e29a685cc1c426f5d9e44015c0ca.pngspacer.png

Coalscuttle's blade catches the monster and tears through it's furrowed skin to reveal the flesh underneath. Thick blood begins to pour from the wound. Whatever this creature is, it seems that it can be killed by the weapons the group wields.

Nearly simultaneously, Coal's mouse, Bee, leaps from her master and scurries the length of the wagon towards the downed guard. Despite her small size, the monster treats her the same as the rest of the group: as a foe. It's tail lashes out and slices the mouse's side wide open. Badly wounded but undeterred, the mouse continues to the guard's side and with a nuzzling rodent nose, delivers a dose of Coal's healing magic. The guard slowly opens his eyes with a groan, "What happened?" he says as much to himself as anyone else, but answers his own question when he looks up to see the monster still looming over the group.

Ingrid grits her teeth and follows Coal's slash with a swing of her hammer, but the creature's flowing body makes it hard to target effectively and her swing whiffs.

Nancy yells out something that one seems to understand, but the strong emotions come through despite the language barrier. She loads her crossbow but holds her shot, seeming to prefer and wait for an opportunity rather than risk hitting her companions.

The creature rears up and extends its wicked looking body out to it's full length, which is nearly that of the wagon itself. In seems to inhale deeply before letting out a strange, almost mind-numbing moan like nothing you've ever heard before. It sends an unnatural and all-consuming fear coursing through your body, and you do your best to keep your wits about you and hope it passes. The last thing the creature does is sort of float down off the wagon and onto the ground below.

DM

Bee takes 9 damage.

Everyone needs to make a DC 15 Will save or be panicked for 2 rounds.

A short distance way fearful citizens run from the melee as calls for the guards increase in volume and intensity.

Draco huffs. He couldn't see anything that would be causing this so this meant that it was not being controlled by anyone. So he decides to just, dismount of his horse and run to the side of the wagon noone else was really on. Maybe he could pull the guy off, or try some magic on the guy or the creature.

Ingrid manages to push through the horrific moaning even though it claws at something primal inside of her, trailing along after the creature. She hadn't seen its ilk, ever, nor heard stories. It was the stuff of children's nightmares. Time and again she found it sliding free before her blow could completely fall.

Another feeble swing, another moment of imbalance standing on the wagon bench. Quim can feel himself growing more impatient and less practical. His emotions were boiling. As if a response to his turmoil, the monster rose high above him and stretched to it's fullest size. Suddenly Quim realized why he'd been so miserably awful at taking down the invisible assassin; it hadn't been one at all. The thing was a nightmare-laced monstrosity.

"Abyss!" He cursed as panic welled up, filling his ears with the pounding of his own heartbeat.

Battle Map

Byran.png.46a5e29a685cc1c426f5d9e44015c0ca.pngspacer.png

Draco and Coalscuttle find themselves overcome with panic and fear. Coalscuttle can't get down from the roof of the wagon fast enough, and she drops the final few feet where she lands with a thud. Draco circles around the horses, trying to keep them and the wagon in between himself and the terrifying monster, and he nearly runs into Coalscuttle. The two grab one another as they look for someone or something to stabilize their racing thoughts.

Vannan and Nancy both jerk back the reins on their horses, and pull their mounts away from the monster as their hearts nearly pound out their chests.

As the creature dips behind the wagon, many who are experiencing unnatural fear breathe easier once the creature is obscured and out of sight, though any fear they are feeling is still very present and driving their decision making.

Ingrid alone seems unphased by the creature's moan. Determined to harm the monster, or at least drive it off, but it hitting it proves to be harder than she hoped.

A few feet away from Ingrid, the guard does his best to mind his defenses, and he slowly rises to his feet.

Even being focused completely on defense doesn't prevent the monster from lunging forward to rip and rake it's razor sharp teeth over the guard's torso. The wound is more than his body can take, and he collapses again into the driver's seat as blood collects around him. The monster has had enough, and begins to fly away into the night sky.

In the distance you can hear rising calls for the guards from frightened townsfolk.

The hideous creature is more than a little disturbing, not only in appearance but in the malignance of its glare. Its shrieking, though, is enough to send Nancy over the edge.

Her friends need her, but in that instant, she can think of nothing else but that horrible, inhuman sound, and knows only one thing: she has to get away! In a blind panic she yanks at her horse's reins, almost falling out of her saddle as she tries to put some distance between herself and the monster -- and that awful sound!

As the breadth of his earlier misunderstanding continued to unfold, Quim could do little to find his own mental footing. With a wave of both his blade and his free hand, he jumped down from the wagon and made his way toward his mount. In his state, he knew that getting atop the horse would be the fastest route away from this awful creature.

Draco was about to try something when the thing screeches and the world sharpens into focus. And with that focus, his mind was hyper-fixating on the threat, resulting in him fleeing. Around the horses and about to run into the distance when he almost trips over Coals.

He reacted on instinct, and slid to his knees and grabbed her as if she could help ward the monster away. Or for comfort. Either/or really.

As the mental fog lifted, it did so slowly. Quim climbed atop his horse and was already digging heels into it before he realized he didn't exactly know where to point the beast. He pulled on the reins and the conflicting orders made the horse buck once. He settled it down, but only after clearing his own cobwebs.

The young man looked around at the growing crowd. The realization that things were about to get worse sobered him up real quick from whatever he'd been dealt. "We need to not be here." He growled at those still standing around the wagon. "Like, now."
