Your assumptions seem to be correct as the armoured figures come into sight. They are wearing half plate armour of the finest Karrnathi design and have swords drawn.

One of them steps in front of the others as they spread out in a line, at least a score of them. In a rasping voice that grates at your nerves it speaks, "Intruders! State your names. Ready your papers and prepare to be boarded."

These creatures are clearly undead. For those who have visited Karrnath or fought against them during the Last War, you recognise them as special kinds of zombie, alchemically and magically treated to be tougher, more durable, and, most importantly, more intelligent than typical zombies. They were made from the remains of soldiers who died during the century long conflict, given a second chance to serve their country. Some were supposedly resurrected again and again after falling in battle.

You imagine a glow of malice in their eyes as they look at you. At least half the undead troop are armed with elaborate bows. It is apparent by the way they move that they are skilled soldiers. Their transition to undeath seems not to have caused them to lose any of their skill.

For those familiar with Karrnath, the undead are common here. Early in the Last War there was a famine and thousands died. The necromancers of the royal court suggested using undead as farmers and troops and the King of the time agreed. Since then they have been put into every avenue of society, an inexhaustible workforce, utterly loyal, and utterly without remorse for their enemies.

On the Day of Mourning four years ago people on the Karrnathi border fled from the Dead Grey Mist into the Karrnath. They were greeted by the swords and bows of Karrnathi Zombie and Skeletons who slaughtered thousands and drove the survivors back into the Mist. Few survived on this side of what was Cyre. The undead do not accept surrender or listen to pleas for mercy.

Not sure if you are asking for one roll where you open the first spoiler if you get a 15 and the second spoiler as well if you get a 30, or if you want two rolls. So I made two but will not open the second spoiler unless the one roll is for both.

"I said to state your names and ready your papers!" he rasps, "Comply!"


"What are they saying?" Antonio asks, sounding worried, his lack of hearing and the zombies lack of proper lips, making it difficult for him to understand them, "Are we in trouble?"

Terry steps in front of Antonio to give him some sort of cover. He tries to explain miming the presentation of papers.

"They want papers." To the soldiers he says, attempting top stall in case someone else can come up with a non-violent solution, "Give us a moment please. There was this train thing and most of us were rendered deaf."

To'Nari cocked an eyebrow curiously at the advance of the undead, pondering something as he moved to find his papers. Stepping up with the parcel in hand, he stated loudly;

"I am To'Nari, an investigator affiliated with the house Tharashk- in my hand I hold my traveling papers. My companions and I were attacked within the mournlands and wished to remove ourselves from the mists in order to heal our wounds before returning to our mission within the wastes."

To elaborate on what Terry mentioned; "We do not mean to cause any disturbance, nor do we wish to provoke any conflict. As well as what my ally said, I would also report that a troupe of rogue warforged has been stalking us for the past days."

 

Actions

Retrieve traveling papers from backpack.

Sense motive; are we in trouble? or is this a routine action?


Xavier (Psicrystal):

Still speaking directly with Antonio; "They want to see our papers, and they want to board the earth sled. We do not seem to be in trouble as of the moment, but they do seem to be agitated."

Hand hesitating for a moment over his belt pouch, Roderick soon shrugged and pulled out his papers. It wasn't worth the effort to try to get one of his extra sets, especially given that he hadn't gone to much effort to hide his face from the undead border patrol.
"Roderick."
Not the best of talkers, even at the best of times, the artificer was more than content to let the others explain the situation, presenting his papers when necessary.

Over the shared communications, Terry informs the others that "From what I heard, these soldiers will not be swayed. either we have the papers they want or they WILL start shooting. I do not think they can be talked out of it using emotional appeals. In fact, even as our countrymen were fleeing the mist, many were slaughtered by these soldiers who do not seem to appreciate a grey area of the law."

The commander carefully examines then alongside Terry's, To'Nari's and then Roderick's papers. The last are forgeries but if there are discrepancies the commander doesn't seem to have noticed them.

Roderick's minimum 12 Linguistics yo make a forgery compared to my roll of 8 to detect forgery means that it passes muster.

He holds his hand out to look at Nox's and Remi's papers but not Bonesetter. "Which of you owns the warforged?" he grates. He does not return the papers yet.

Warforged were freed at the signing of the Treaty of Thronehold two years ago. Nobody owns a warforged any more.

"How many warforged threaten the border? Which enemy nation are they serving?"

Remi takes a moment to calmly retrieve his identification papers and dutifully hands them over. "The warforged? He's under our dominion ever since he's been re-purposed. It checks out."

He quickly changes the subject by gesturing behind him from where they came. "There is a gang of warforged a good distance back. Harassed us, they did. I believe they went rogue and serve one of their own now, the infamous Lord of Blades."

Nox's eyes narrowed at the sight of undead, it made her gut turn with the fact that people used these things. She could understand the logic, but wondered at how it would be if she was one or if one of her loved ones were undead. She wasn't really sure how to react to these things that acted like guards or more like a border control, so she left it up to her companions to answer. She didn't like the thought of a conflict with them, if they could avoid it. With To'Nari leading the answer, she digs in her bag for her own papers. "Nox.", she answers for her name and holds her papers out for them to be looked over. She gritted her teeth at the question of who Bonesetter belonged to, but holds her tongue.

They are not gentle with it, throwing open crates, emptying sacks, shaking bottles and jars and then discarding them on the deck.

They return to the commander and whisper their findings to him, "What is the purpose of your visit to Karrnath?"

Ever inclined not to make a scene, and with their question having technically already been answered by To'Nari, Roderick kept quiet, figuring it was better to let those already talking keep talking. Instead, the half-elf began slowly tidying up the mess the undead soldiers had left behind, keeping a wary on the group to make sure they didn't show any signs of objecting to his actions.
