DR3 vs nonmagical bludgeoning, slashing, piercing

My words,  | My thoughts,’  | My actions . . .

As the last of their enemies fall, Artanis turns back to the fiery bay stallion behind him, bringing it to heel again with a hand resting against a neck sleek with sweat. Unfortunately, by the time it's back under control his first mount has expired, the red tinged froth around its nose a telltale sign of the punctured lung his new charge's kick had inflicted. He watches Coltan circle the battlefield, the smith seemingly as practiced in mending bodies as tools, finding himself struck with the same melancholy the dwarf seems to carry. A terrible waste of life. Though for their efforts it would be worse he supposes. As the remaining villages pick themselves up and count the cost, he forces an encouraging smile and pats several of them on the back as he makes his way over to Becklin and Cudgel, murmuring what commendations he can muster - after all, Vogler still stands.

As he sees Cudgel accost one of the wounded traitors he steps to intervene, laying a heavy mailed hand stained rusty with blood on her arm. "Easy Cudgel," he placates, "we'll have answers, but he needs to be able to talk back in the village." His eyes harden as he lifts the wounded mercenary to his feet, and borrows rope to bind his hands, stringing them to the horses saddle. He growls at the prisoner as he does so "You owe the people of Vogler answers at least - don't mistake my concern for clemency." He just hopes one of his companions is stronger than he in that respect. He steals a glance at Huuni, the whip at her side pretending innocence again.

"Of course Mayor Raven," he brushes aside the mans thanks, "any knight would have done the same. It is my companions who have now thrown themselves into duty's way twice without a second thought to their own health." he silently adds "and very nearly paid the price. Not all of them are as tough as Modri, and you must be the bulwark."

As they walk slowly back to town he tries his best to fan the flagging, focussing on the town and people they protected, the indomitable spirit of Vogler that defended High Hill both then and now.

Battlefield Presence. When you take the Attack action, in place of making an attack, you can use your Battlefield Presence to grant a friendly creature that can see or hear you an additional attack the next time they take the Attack action during their turn. Any additional attacks granted that are unused at the start of your next turn are lost. A friendly creature can only gain one additional attack from this feature per round from this feature.

Bonus Actions:

Rallying Mark As a bonus action, you can expend a number of Leadership Dice (up to your per turn limit) to rally your allies to attack a hostile creature within 60 feet of you.

Urgent Orders As a bonus action, you can expend a number of Leadership Dice (up to your per turn limit) to guide your allies in expeditious action.

Target an allied creature within 60 feet of you that can see or hear you, that creature can immediately use its reaction to move up to its movement speed (up to a maximum of 30 feet) without provoking opportunity attacks.    Helpful Word As a bonus action, you can spend a Leadership Die to take the Help action. When you use the Help action to aid an ally in attacking a creature, the target of that attack can be within 30 feet of you, rather than within 5 feet of you, if your ally can see or hear you.

Class Features:

  Precise Strike. 0/2 (Long Rest)

   Leadership Dice (d6). 1/3 (Short Rest, 1/turn)

Lead the Charge. When you roll initiative you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus (5 THP).

“My words,” | ‘My thoughts,’  | My actions

Mery's head spins for a moment with all the action going on around her - Coltan healing the wounded, Artanis taming the final two horses, Cudgel's angry yelling at being betrayed, Mayor Raven's efforts to get everyone healed and back to Vogler. She's also curious about the items from the saddlebags, as the lute and quarterstaff at least seem familiar. The gems she can't place at all.

She dismounts, then takes a moment study the horse. His palomino coloring and white blaze down the face are quite striking, so tentatively, she dubs him Handsome. Then, after Coltan sets the broken leg of the militia man they fought with in the battle, she offers to let him ride Handsome as she leads the animal back to Vogler, talking some of the surviving villagers into helping him get mounted.

As Cudgel continues her tirade, she places a hand on the Dwarf woman's shoulder. "Look, I can completely understand how a betrayal by your own people would be upsetting and how you would want answers, but yelling isn't going to help achieve that. Why don't we all head back to Vogler and at least get cleaned up a bit before we tackle getting answers? I've been told I can be quite persuasive when I want to be, and frankly, if you would allow it, I'd like a crack at questioning the traitor, but I could use your help in figuring out an approach. I'm thinking a carrot might be more useful than a stick, at least to start with, so can you tell me anything about this man that we might be able to use to help persuade him to tell us what he knows - is he generally a good person, does he have family somewhere that he fights for, does he have any debts? To persuade a person, one needs a sense of what motivates them."

Assuming she can get Cudgel thinking and talking more constructively, she tries to place both the lute and the quarterstaff as they walk back toward Vogler, and she tells the others what she recalls.

Modri finds his elation somewhat diminished as he realizes the full extent of what happened. Most the militia is dead, and so too are fine folk who didn't want any of the fight at all. His own passion is tainted with frustration that this was far from a straightforward struggle of life and death. No... this reeked of trickery, ambition, and most all war.

Modri hates the idea of war.

A fight sees people putting their wits, skill, and strength to the test. War sees a force outnumbered beyond hope. A hunt is a matter of survival. War leaves rotten bodies out in a field to fester. A brawl can lead to good stories as people laugh off their bruises. Wars are only spoken highly of in the third person, not by those living in it.

He drops his prop spear in disgust, and moves to retrieve his weapons, helping push, pull, and drag the captured mercenaries to where they'll be questioned. "You lot thought you were awful clever, didn't you. Like a card cheat thinking himself so smart for hiding a card up his sleeve. Guess what? I think I'm clever too. I'm clever because I make sure I'm strong and tough so I can still whip a bunch of prancing, delicate mercs even when they've really weapons and I don't." The words are more of imparting a life lesson than a taunt. The fight was over, no need for more taunts.

“My words” | ‘My thoughts’  | My actions . . .

The battlefield grows quiet as Gragonis falls and the remaining mercs run off. Merituuli breathes deeply, letting the tempestuous magic fade from the long shell he carries, and takes a moment to survey the area. His new allies had all survived, Hunni's close call notwithstanding. Coltan was getting to work tending to the wounded militia that remained, Cudgel had regained consciousness and had her hands on a turncoat merc, and everyone was convening with Mayor Raven. He finds the militiaman with the broken leg and helps them gain their footing on the way back to Vogler. "I wanted to commend you for your bravery in protecting Hunni when she was downed by that mad horse. Ispin would've been proud, I'm sure. What's your name, friend?"

On the path back to Vogler, Merituuli finds himself lost in thought. What was the aim of these turncoat mercenaries? Were they here to cause as much chaos as possible? What connection did they have to Ispin, if any? Was any of this related to the return of Takhisis? He breathes in deeply to calm his racing mind, letting the breath out slowly and steadily. Abbuku, I could really use your guidance. If the gods truly are returning... could you send a bit of help my way?

2010-kabini-osprey.jpg.2fc78c838a7e1bc0d48144b4320c0ba5.jpgAs if in response to his internal plea, a swift breeze passes over the area, rustling the leaves of a tall oak nearby. Looking up in the boughs, Merituuli sees a rather curious sight - an osprey staring down at him, its head cocked slightly as if studying the sea elf. With a skree, the hawk swoops down and perches itself on Merituuli's shoulder, continuing to stare at him. Grinning, Merituuli says, "Well, I suppose that's as much a sign as any. I suppose you're a new friend, then? I think I'll call you... Kalasääski. That seems fitting."

You can use this feature to mark a favored enemy a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

As for Hunni, she gives the dead horse one last kick, before glaring about for her next target. Slowly, the shadows drain from her eyes, and the tiny Gully Dwarf comes back.

For a moment, she almost seems ready to continue assaulting the remaining horses, although as they are calmed, she calms down as well. Hunni doesn't resist spitting angrily on the ground, though, as she rubs her ribs tenderly.

When the money is counted, and the gemstones appraised, she seems somewhat disinterested; anything more than two seems like a fortune, and she already has more than two gold, so a bigger fortune than a fortune is just.. Two fortunes. She leaves it to the bigger folk to discuss.

When Mery tells them about the lute and the quarterstaff, though, she glances down at her whip. Then nods. "Ok," she says, then looks at the others. "Do you mind if I, uh, hold on to the snake staff? I think something like that could help keep me safe," she asks, batting her eyes a bit unnecessarily.

All said, though, the young warlock seems as sad as the others about the death this day has brought to Vogler.

FeatsWar CasterPrerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell
You have practiced casting Spells in the midst of Combat, learning Techniques that grant you the following benefits:
You have advantage on Constitution Saving Throws that you make to maintain your Concentration on a spell when you take damage.
You can perform the somatic Components of Spells even when you have Weapons or a Shield in one or both hands.
When a Hostile creature’s Movement provokes an opportunity Attack from you, you can use your Reaction to Cast a Spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity Attack. The spell must have a Casting Time of 1 Action and must target only that creature.

 | FeaturesRitual CastingYou can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared.
Arcane RecoverYou have learned to regain some of your magical energy by studying your spellbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher. For example, if you’re a 4th-level wizard, you can recover up to two levels worth of spell slots. You can recover either a 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots.
BladesongYou can invoke an elven magic called the Bladesong, provided that you aren't wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield. It graces you with supernatural speed, agility, and focus. You can use a bonus action to start the Bladesong, which lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you don medium or heavy armor or a shield, or if you use two hands to make an attack with a weapon. You can also dismiss the Bladesong at any time (no action required). While your Bladesong is active, you gain the following benefits: You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). Your walking speed increases by 10 feet. You have advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks. You gain a bonus to any Constitution saving throw you make to maintain your concentration on a spell. The bonus equals your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1). You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

It can move across uneven terrain, up or down stairs, slopes and the like, but it can’t cross an elevation change of 10 feet or more. For example, the disk can’t move across a 10-foot-deep pit, nor could it leave such a pit if it was created at the bottom. The quiet after the battle is unnerving. The enormous corpse of the ogre and the pathetic bodies of the mercenaries do not even register to him, only those of the fallen defenders. As the remnants of the mercenary forces are chased off, and the survivors lick their wounds and attend to the bodies of the dead, Decimus finds himself feeling breathless. The tragedy hits him all at once as the beautiful town and its traditions are now devastated by the thoughtless violence. This once memorable day, forever marred. In his head, the sounds of violence is still resonating loudly, his ears are ringing. This is not the first battle he had found himself in, but somehow, he had never experienced something so senseless on such a large scale. How many lives had been cut short today? Nearby shouting pulls him from his thoughts, and he sees Artanis preventing Cudgel from taking one more life today, and though the knight is right, the Wizard feels the disgusting thought that it would have been ok if his companion had not been in time to stop him. He clenches his fist and shakes that darkness from his shoulders, it was unbecoming of a Wizard of Solinari to have such thoughts. His eye slowly scans the battlefield to the rough blacksmith, who is attending the wounded like the finest of battlefield medics, making the Bladesinging wizard feel even more useless. Before he can even think to help, the Dwarf has rounded up survivors and has them stabilized and healed, with other survivors helping carry and finish mending their wounds.

The voice of the Half-Elf reaches his ears, but it sounds as though she is underwater, the ringing seems endless now. As the group coordinates to count up their newfound treasure, and though his mind is too dazed to have a grasp on the value of the jewels, he certainly feels the magic of the two intricate items that had been gathered together in the pile. Neither are of interest to him, but as Hunni requests the staff, he suspects she too has an understanding of its power. Mery would be the natural choice for the lute, but she does not speak up about it, so he leaves it alone for now. Talking is the last thing he wants to do. His disappointment in himself was painful, but to disguise it all, he hangs back behind the rest as usual, hat pulled low over his face.
