As they approached the newly refurbished station, Grommash, found himself awestruck by the extensive work that had been undertaken. Bhalgurn, a stalwart companion, guided him through the labyrinthine corridors, recounting the arduous battles that had been waged to reclaim control over the once-devastated outpost.

Amidst their journey, Grommash's keen eyes roamed over the intricate repairs and renovations that had been painstakingly executed by the dedicated crew. Despite his initial skepticism, he couldn't help but be genuinely impressed by the level of skill and dedication that had been poured into reviving the station from its state of disrepair.

While the scars of past conflicts still marred the station's facade, Grommash felt an undeniable reluctance to part ways with this newly revitalized bastion. However, the allure of the enigmatic Dawnbringer, a rare and coveted piece of technology, further fueled Grommash's intrigue. With a slight hesitation, he resigned himself to temporarily leaving behind the remarkable station, setting forth to lend his expertise to the crucial mission ahead.

The newly expanded crew make their way to one of the two intact control points. They can see the hole in the station's ring shape through its viewport. The triangle of silver "strands" that had looked so gossamer from afar are revealed as cables too thick to wrap one's hands around. Two of them are anchored to a point just below where the party stands looking out at the view. The ethereal blue light they shed when the expedition arrived has become stronger and more frequent.

The control room itself is a series of magical terminals in three lines, all facing the viewport. Long-dormant screens now glow and flash with ancient sigils Kutaeg can translate. This work finds him patrolling the the control banks while others work through a lengthy series of steps to bring them online. Members of the genie's crew are doing the same in the other location, staying in contact via the station's communications. More are positioned at key places in the complex to perform any urgent repairs or workarounds that may become necessary.

Fortunately, none do. Caution makes progress slow but steady and safe. The imitation Elader control circlet changes hands (er, heads) multiple times during this process. In general it passes to whoever is performing the most delicate task. The wearer finds they can command their terminal with a mere thought and understand its status even without knowing the language. Their work becomes much more efficient but the constant flow of information into their mind can be draining.

Their work builds up a gigantic reservoir of energy over the next two hours.

Now the cables crossing the ring give off a continuous, blazing white radiance instead of a pulsing blue glow. Strands of that light begin to swirl in spirals towards the center. They meet there and begin to pool into a brilliant disc that is painful to look at. Its radius steadily increases until reaching the triangle of cables.

"No turning back now." Ross says. "All this power has to go somewhere."

"One way or another, it's going to be quite a show." Tara comments.

"Everybody ready?" Segun asks. Assuming nods all around, the group makes contact with their counterparts in the other location, who are also prepared.

He holds out the control circlet. "Who wants to do the honors?"

In the heart of the station, an electric fervor charged the air as Grommash's seasoned hands deftly orchestrated intricate dance of cables. What was typically a stoic countenance now radiated with a profound excitement, his weathered features illuminated by the flickering glow of creativity.

Amid this captivating choreography, Grommash's exultation broke free in a cascade of words. "Yes, yes, yes! Go, go, go!" he urged, his voice a powerful incantation, urging the enchanting process onward. Gundin, positioned strategically behind Kuteag and Bhalgurn, Gundin's gentle yet commanding push forward.

Branek Goldbeard Dwarf Paladintoken_1.png.b7e2b8c1b53044cb579d20fd7be84708.png

AC: 18/20 (Chain/Shield) | HP: 60/60 | HD: 7/7d10 | Initiative: +0 | PP: 16 | Channel Divinity: 1/1 | Harness Divine Power: 2/2 | DM Inspiration: 0/1

Branek Goldbeard stood before the high-powered portal device, his armored form a steadfast sentinel amidst the humming machinery. The brilliant golden hue of his beard caught the ambient light, creating an almost ethereal glow. His armor, adorned with religious symbols and texts, bore the weight of centuries of devotion to the Order of the Radiant Dawn. His fingers gently touched the holy symbol that hung from his neck, a sign of his unyielding faith.

As he observed the intricate device before him, Branek's mind churned with a mixture of wonder and cautious curiosity. The portal's intricate design held the promise of traversing vast distances, a power that both intrigued and gave rise to apprehension. Fiends and malevolent forces often sought to exploit such ancient technologies, and Branek's duty was to ensure that the light of the divine shone bright even in the darkest corners of the cosmos.

He closed his eyes for a moment, his lips moving in a silent melodic prayer. The notes of the prayer seemed to weave with the surrounding energy, creating a sense of harmony between the arcane and the divine. With each verse, his grip on the holy symbol tightened, drawing strength from the Order he represented and the powers that guided his path.

As he opened his eyes, they settled on the portal once more. The faint scent of Frostmead lingered on his breath, a reminder of his heritage and the dwarven traditions that had shaped him. The warmth of the drink, distilled from the finest ingredients, resonated within him, infusing his being with a sense of resilience and determination.

Branek's thoughts turned to the potential of the portal—a bridge to new worlds, new challenges, and new evils that might threaten the galaxy. But he was not without optimism, for the presence of the Order's symbols and his unwavering faith had the power to transmute darkness into light. His role as an inquisitor for the divine was not confined to the material plane alone; it extended to the realms beyond, where ancient powers and cosmic forces vied for dominance.

With a deep breath, he exhaled, the Frostmead and cigar smoke mingling with the air. His eyes held a mixture of reverence and resolve as he prepared to step forward into the unknown. The portal's hum grew louder, and as he walked towards it, his golden beard swayed like a banner of hope against the backdrop of uncertainty.

Branek Goldbeard, Paladin of the Order of the Radiant Dawn, was ready to face whatever lay beyond the threshold. His faith, his symbols, and the lingering essence of Frostmead intertwined to guide his steps and protect against the fiendish shadows that lurked in the void.

As the portal activated, and it began swirling and humming, Kutaeg watched in wonder as their new team mates came together to help. This wonder of science was happening to due to the efforts of this fresh team, and the bard found it inspiring. AS the portal hummed at various pitches and frequencies, he hit harmonics on the fretboard of his mandolin to add to ambience of the spectacle. He gave Bhalgurn a knowing wink... their team just grew in power, and they both knew it in that moment.

Bhalgurn watched with amazement as the team began igniting the portal. Every move was calculated, every task critical. He had never focused so hard for such a long period and was beginning to get fatigued. This was a strange notion to the barbarian. He hadn't done any physical exertion, yet his body felt drained. He was amazed that the brain could be such an energy sink, and realized for the first time that those like Barradon, who were hyper intelligent and did this sort of thinking every day were much stronger than him in certain ways. It was curious to think of strength in a different way. At that moment he caught Kutaeg's look and Bhalgurn responded with an excitable grin. It was true, they would be a powerful team; a strong mix of affability and arcane prowess, invention, religious devotion, and martial power.

When the rest of his companions passed on taking the circlet, Bhalgurn summoned what energy and focus he had left and humbly accepted the charge. "I'll do my best," he grumbled, but was secretly excited to be given this opportunity. "Make sure ya mention my 'stoic determination' and 'unflattering confidence' when ya write yer next epic ballad about this, Kutaeg." Bhalgurn had not even noticed that he had used the word "unflattering" instead of "unfaltering" as he delicately took the circlet and placed it on his head. Kutaeg was used to Bhalgurn's vocabulary faux pas at this point, but to Grommash and Branek, it was their first introduction. A slight hiccup in an otherwise momentous occasion.

Bhalgurn's mind is yanked into several places at once. It takes a moment to reorient. Then he feels the cable anchor points surrounding the portal as extensions of himself. Power swells against them like water behind a dam. What's been let out so far has been a trickle by comparison. That was manipulated to prepare the way for the main surge which the barbarian is now tasked to unleash.

Doing so feels like wrenching open a heavy door using parts of himself that didn't exist until now. He flexes open a dozen safety inhibits with a mere thought for each. Every time, one of a series of amber standby light flares bright green. The last one changes and then--

image.png.303085ec988267a50dc34cc209177dbe.png

--the gathered energy expands into a fractal sphere of swirling light. Those towards the back of the room briefly see the others as silhouettes before it washes out everything in sight. Then it collapses in on itself and seemingly fades to darkness. Once everyone's eyes adjust, they can see a transparent ripple in space spanning the ring's opening. Through it they see a dull, ancient white dwarf star that wasn't there before.

As the final switch was pulled, Bhalgurn felt the expulsion of more raw energy than he had ever experienced or even imagined. There was something monumental about this moment, that Bhalgurn was hard pressed to pin point later, after he had time to think about it. But knowing there was that much power in the universe certainly had a way of challenging Bhalgurn's beliefs.

When the flare had subsided and Bhalgurn could see what they had all accomplished, he let out a mighty roar of celebration! They had finally done it! All those long months of work had finally paid off. They were staring into another, completely separate section of space, or maybe even into another plane of existence. He was beginning to feel antsy, needing to be off again in adventure. There was much to do before they were all consumed by the fires of the fiendish war machine.

"Take a look a' those stars beyond the local star there," he said to everyone, but mostly Segunn. "Do ya know if we can pin point this location with our current star charts? "

Grommash's eyes widened in astonishment as the portal materialized before them, a shimmering rift in the fabric of reality. His own disbelief seemed to be mirrored in his actions as he blindly gestured toward Gundin, seeking affirmation. The wave seemed to reach its mark, for Gundin's metallic hand settled on Grommash's shoulder, reassuringly acknowledging the luminous spectacle. "What wonders these old eyes see," Grommash marveled, his mouth agape with awe. As Segunn prepared to consult their star charts, Grommash's impatience surged forth. His words tumbled out as he fervently described the array of stars, his hope rooted in the belief that some hidden detail might illuminate the significance of these newfound locations.

OOC: Grommash is casting Guidance on Segunn if needed. He is "helping" be pointing out unique attributes that may help narrow down the stars Bhalgurn pointed out.

"A good question." Segun acknowledges. "Let me head back to Meridian to have a look at them."

He pauses before departing to admire the view and the hole in space through which it appears.

"In the meantime," Tara suggests, "we could try and look it up here. Somebody has to have marked down where the other end of this gate opens."

OOC: I'll assume Grommash's Guidance actually goes to Kutaeg or whoever is searching through the station's files with him translating. Posting in OOC thread about skills.

Kutaeg and Segunn continued to dig through the files looking , and Kutaeg helped translate to better translate the star charts. The sheer amount of universe out there made Kutaeg feel small, his songs trivial. But he reminded himself that a bard' mustn't think in those ways, if every star has a million songs, then he's got a lot of learning left to do.

Kutaeg spends some time studying the newly revealed system. It's slow work at first because the background stars are washed out by the white dwarf itself.

Segun returns with more information from the star charts. Grommash lends assistance as well. With their help, Kutaeg examines its light through various filters and uses each result to cut down the available data. This narrows down a gigantic list to a more manageable number.

During this work, the white dwarf seems to drift. It seems like the gate on the other end is rotating. The genie's workers will soon divide themselves between that complex and this one, making sure both are stabilized for a safe return journey. In the meantime the rotation soon hides the white dwarf from the broader night sky.

And what a sky!

The view now dazzles in a whole new way. The stars are too numerous to readily map; that is a clue in itself. It's obvious this gate leads somewhere much closer to the galactic center. Kutaeg can immediately rule out most of the remaining candidates.

Finally he identifies the white dwarf as an obscure core star named Ember. It has only one planet, a close companion which was once distant enough to be the sole survivor of the star's red giant phase. It then spiraled down due to drag from the cast off layers of the dying star as the latter shrank down to a white dwarf.

The planet is now larger than the star it orbits, although far less dense. It must be on the far side at the moment; it could eclipse the white dwarf from view if it were in between. Visitors can expect a rugged world with heavier-than-standard gravity. Its surface has been permanently scarred by the late red giant's wrath.

"Ember..." Bhalgurn said, as if in a daze. It was amazing to see just how far away this gate would take them. He imagined gates like this splattered across the cosmos, allowing a ship to fly from one end of the galaxy to the other with about as much effort as flying between planets in the same system. What a wonder to behold.

"So," he said, shaking out of his daydream. "When do we get ta head out? There any more preparation or recono-sense we need ta be completin', or should we just head fer the blasted planet and begin lookin' fer clues?" The other could tell Bhalgurn was anxious to begin. In his heart of hearts, he wanted to be on the first ship through. He wanted desperately to be the one to find the celestial ship.

Kutaeg confirms they should only expect the one planet when they head through.

"In that case," Segun suggests, "once through, I agree we have an obvious first visit to make. Meanwhile the work crews here will split between this place and the gate on the other side. We would not want to stray too far, not right away, in case they have any trouble."

"We've got all the ship supplies I can think of." Ross says. "They are ready to go when you are."
