The Second Step

Deeds And Words

The rest of you observe Shade moving into the thicket of the crowd, most likely to have a better look at things. Being small has its advantages in a crowd like this. You see his head pop up not far from your spot, maybe a stone's toss away, like a mole peeking out, right on top of a wagon loaded with carts. Then he dives out of your sight again.

At the same time, you can see your Sarai's little familiar zipping hither-tither-yonder like a little missile.

Now that you are here and observing the scene, particularly a moment where the line is holding against both the commoners as well as more colorful individuals - like your peers and even some troublemakers - you can slowly but inevitably draw your attention to Something Quite Interesting.

There is a woman trying to argue her way through: she is dressed quite well, and could be described as having fire in her blood. Her hair rather looks like a bundle of flames in motion. Her voice is loud and passionate, and in similar manner her hands are in very rapid motion as she waves them about in a mirror of how her words just froth out of her. She's being quite clear about the fact that she - Zofia Katherie Emberings, Lady Of The Ember Estate - has business in the Toll Bank and the City Watch right this instant and that this is more important that the officer's orders.

It doesn't look like the officer she is haranguing is able to withstand too much of this. Even though the crowd is in that way it is impossible to miss this woman, and directly as a follow-up of that, you can see the officer in questiong slowly buckling under the verbal assault.

You could do something about that...or just stand back and watch.

Small Info Box

Knowledge: Nobility can be rolled at the lady with swishing hands.

Sense Motive can also be attempted to ascertain if the lady in question is "legit"

Map note: there is a very large wall made of steel and stone blocking your vision into the bank area where the sounds of large scale violence are occurring.

Having located a way to go around, Shade moves back to the others.

Hey. I have found a way around this. We can go through a vegetable market over there and go around. I don't think there is any reason for us to get involved in this.

He waits for response before leading them towards the market.

Skold was still fairly new to the city, and he always like to ingratiate himself to a new place when he'd be working out of it for a while, so exploring more of the streets felt good. Gather more familiarity to help turn a house into a home. Every place was different, be it culture, architecture or produce, however upon seeing the crowd and the wide street blocked off, it reminded him that some things never changed. Nobles, and merchants for that matter (was that a Richmonds? Tight buggers are everywhere now), are good at a number of social skills, but truly the worst of them knew how to speak for themselves. Loudly.

He didn't blame Shade for wanting to avoid all this. One look at the crowd could show everyone knew better than to get in the firing line, but Sarai seemed intent on getting closer. Best not let her deal with the headache alone. "Let's give it a quick go," he suggested to Shade, gesturing lightly at the watchman about to burst, "I've found it helps to be in the city watch's good books. See if we can't do 'em a favour here."

Guys, think about it for a second. If the watch is not stopping these guys from attacking the bank that means one of two things. Either they are supporting the attackers and won't want our interference, or they are afraid of whoever is commanding the attackers. In which case we do not want to make that person our enemy. Let's just mind our own business and go around!

Or, she looks up at Skold with a grin, mostly disregarding what Shade was saying, we help Ms. Hottentot there get through the picket line and put her in our debt. We can even masquerade as her entourage and possibly get through with her.

Sarai's suggestion was just that, a suggestion, but she looked ready, indeed even eager, to put that plan into motion. She examines the noble, wracking her brain for anything she might know about the Emberings and Ember Estate, allowing the others a moment to mull it over.

Skold was trying to piece together the scenario considering Shade's take on the dangers, but was stopped short by Sarai's grin. This may have only been the second time, but after the goblins this was already proving to be a scheming grin and he wasn't sure whether to appreciate or fear it.

He sighed, "I was afraid you might say that. Yeah these fancy folk'll pay top coin for a good guard so we'd look the part. Talk fast enough, pray she catches on, and I reckon that might work." It didn't quite sit well with him, working to mischeavously undermine the efforts of the Watch, but it was hardly a grave violation of his teachings. That, and Sarai seemed excited to try. How could he say no?

Alright then, she turns to Shade, take Elektra with you (she had noticed the dwarf's characteristic scowl) and go through the market, if you wish. Meet us at the tavern - Shade blue-something was the name of the owner. She spares a quick smile for Macsen, you're free to join us, or go through the market, as you see fit.

Once she's laid out her plan, she adds, it will be easier with just the three of us anyway. No offense to either of you, she smiles at the two shorties, then gazes knowingly at her familiar. Something tells me this is a good opportunity for us, if we play our cards right, she says to none of them in particular.

Sister Elektra. Healer & Elementalist

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=18, Touch=12, FF=16 / HP=15/15 / Init=2 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=2, Will = 6 _______________________________________________________________________

The roadblock, huge crowd and now the lady arguing with the Watch was really getting on the nerves of Sister Elektra as she silently recited Dwarven religious text in her head, a technique taught to her long, long ago to try and keep her emotions, and more importantly, her actions in check at certain times and, boy-oh-boy, was this one of those times!

Looking at everyone and everything through a slightly hung-over skeptical eye, the holy woman wonders to herself if this supposedly noble lady is the real deal or a ten-silver fake, after all that gave the Priestess something to do while Shade was gone exploring possible avenues around this quagmire.

As soon as Shade returns with the glorious news that he found a way around the blockade and that his nerve-wracking quandary will soon be over, Sister Elektra smiles while silently thanking the gods and simply says, "Let's get out of here before that meeting ends and our contact moves along going about his daily business. With these short legs, I don't want to spend all day chasing the 'goose' as it were."

However, the minister is a bit surprised when the bulk of the group wants to help the 'fancy bird' make her noble way through the Watch's blockade. Nonetheless, both options were viable and, since she was far from refined or charismatic, the Elementalist says, "I'll go with Shade. I won't be any help with fancy talking or footloose walking, so I'll go try to make contact with the 'man' we need to see."

Well, that certainly was an easy choice. Either stand here in the sun and try to influence others with her non-existent charm and problematic sweetness or sit in a bar and drink ale while waiting on some fancy-dancy meeting to end so we can ask a favor and make some moolah, Sister Elektra thinks to herself.

A tough decision, she mentally muses for less than a moment before saying, "Yup, I'm going with him."

Sarai nods once at Elektra's declaration. I'll send Zila with you, so we can find each other easily, she says, even as she points at the dwarf, little Zila floating over along the arc of her finger. Remember, Shade Blue-something or other.. and keep an eye on that sneak, she adds with a wink.

She doesn't take time to watch them go, as the tirade behind her continues unabated, rather she quickly casts a couple of spells pointing at the Lady Emberings in the process, then turns and looks up at Skold. The big, silent bodyguard, she smiles at him, then looks at Mac.

She is perhaps a modest noble, she says in response to his comments, but a noble none-the-less.. and I think we may be able to appease the officer to some degree as well. Back me up, she adds with a grin and slowly makes her way toward the scene. Was that her lips moving as she walked?

When she gets a few yards from the picket line, she begins to move, a little more swiftly but not as to startle anyone, as if she were excited to see her mistress.  There you are, m'lady! I knew we'd find you, if we just followed the noise, she says with a sideways smirk and a little eye roll for the guard's benefit. So sorry to lose you like that, m'lady.

She speaks quickly, hoping to not give the guard a chance to recover, directing her next comments directly at him. What's going on here? What's the delay? She would hold her hands up, feigning to hold back the noble woman. I'm sorry if there's any grief, captain, she smiles her most charming smile. We have an important meeting with associates of Lord Harm Mortton and officers of the watch command and we're already late. We shouldn't keep them waiting longer. We don't want that kind of fuss now do we? She gives him an appraising, accusatorial look, putting the ball completely in his court.

She would pause briefly, allowing Lady Emberings to "be the bad cop," then would continue calmly but firmly if the lady did respond, or politely cut off the officer at the right moment to add, if you'll just let us through now, we can smooth this all over, captain. Lord Mortton need not even hear about it.

The division of labour felt good here. Shortcuts rarely went well for Skold as they usually involved quiet movements or narrow spaces...best leave that to the more nimble folk. Sarai led the charge so he kept stride shortly behind as she effortlessly launched into her performance. His job right now was simple enough, he'd done it a few times before. Sarai was being nice, which meant Lady Emberings was still the problem, so that problem image needed to seem more costly to try dealing with. He stood tall with a neutral expression just behind the noble, almost forgettable in the background of the conversation, yet undeniably present.

spacer.pngQUICK STATS:  AC=18, Touch=12, FF=16 / HP=15/15 / Init=2 / Saves: Fort=4, Reflex=2, Will = 6 _______________________________________________________________________

Glad to be shed of this crowd and commotion, Sister Elektra smiles and nods affirmatively when Sarai says that she will send Zila along with her and Shade to keep in loose communication between the two groups.

The Dwarf really liked the tiny hummingbird, but that wasn't anything unusual. After all, she tended to like most animals over most people most of the time. And today was certainly no exception as it quickly wore on her nerves.

When Sarai mentions keeping an eye on Shade, the holy woman just laughs and says in a hushed voice, "Not likely. I believe that fellow could somehow hide and disappear in an empty room! But we'll stick together to protect the statue and make the contact."

Without saying more, the minister nods affirmatively at Shade and motions for him to lead the way, while she walks along behind him allowing the symbols and accoutrements of her holy office to be on full display as the pair head to the market and make their way to the back alley the rogue located to bypass the Watch's blockade.

Deeds And Words

Sarai, Skold and Macsen

Sarai time her steps just so into at an opportune moment where Lady Emberings is drawing a breath into a visibly tensing body, lovely as it may be in her very lovely state of dress. She doesn't so much turn as whip her orange hair with the flair of fire in motion, right on cue for Macsen to add his voice right over the poor suffering City Watch trooper's attempt to speak up.

"Ebonee!" Lady Embering graces Sarai with a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. But she at leasst sounds happy to see the three of you. "So good of you to arrive! And you brought Petyr and Nick both. Marvelous!" Then Lady Emberings turns to continue her shouting with the rising vim of a tornado about to make itself known, but the trooper by this point is reduced to staring into the ground, spear clutched under an armpit and both hands raised in a gesture to beg for a reprieve. You are fairly sure you can hear this poor soul holding back whimpers of terror.

"Please please please stop yelling at me and go," comes a piteous sounding male voice from behind a visor. As you make your way past the cordon that opens for you and your entourage - much to the outrage of the crowd behind you and startled objections from both sides of you - you are certain you can hear a noise of desperation from the harangued trooper who cannot wave you past soon enough.

Once through, Lady Emberings points out a gathering of six individuals with a grand sweep of her hand. "Observe, Ebonee: One captain of the Watch stands here and the rabble are keeping him from his duty. I should have brought my house guards to stomp the likes of them in the dirst, where they belong."

Incidentally, in the time it takes for Lady Embering to preach this and lead your group to the identified group of six, you can hear an intense battle being waged in the direction of the bank, including spell incantations and even the sounds of escalation that makes it clear it is not a mere brawl. You think you even hear spell blasts going off! You can even see it, through a gate that has been battered down with force, a conflux of violence and death.

The group of six looks as follows.

There is a very large person is an enormous black plate armor that is constantly wreathed in fire. In one hand they have an axe, in another a large shield, and they loom as the largest person. They wear a a large, somewhat singed looking cloak that flutters despite the absence of wind.

Varon is here as well. He is dressed much like you recall, but on his person you see enough expensive materials to estimate he would be welcome in any noble function, possible even in a courtly event.

Next to Varon you see a handome young man with the airs of a calm professional. He, too, is dressed in finery but wears just a little too much wealth and looks verging on the ostentatious.

There are three other men who are all but skulking in the shadow of the larger armored figure. Their eyes are dark ink, and their faces are mostly covered by an identical, large scarf with a pattern of reds and oranges upon it. All three seem to be talking, animatedly at that, as indicated by all thee of them making simultaneous movements with their arms.

Shade and Elektra

Shade's expertise allows you to slip in through the crowds and into the market. It takes a bit of doing to make happen without drawing the notice of local security thugs on yourselves but there's only two of you and there's a large event not too far from you, so you manage. It proves trickier to go through the first route Shade would have used, mostly due to gossip mongers having gathered right there where they are not needed.

Some evasions through what looks like a tomato garden a local druid adept is making happen allows you to evade gossipers' eyes. From there, it is a discrete path through backdoors, back alleys and other discrete steps. Elektra is not trained for sneaking through fences and part gardens but Shade manages to ease her through since it's just you two.

One more garden wall of a residence that you must go over- and here you are. A tavern, right where you estimated.

At first glance it looks like a tavern where people go to drown their worry with coppers, and thus like it draws only troublesome sorts in it. The sign on it declares its name to be "Bent Copper"  but it merits a mention that the sign itself looks both metalline and bent from hard use. You hear no noises from inside, not a single yell.

Being as you are on the inner yard, you have a perfect view of a closed courtyard that has little to it beside some tables and chairs on packed sand as well as two rough looking types who look to be best suited for breaking knees in a dark alley. They are smoking something smelly and guarding a large looking care.

This is the place. A tavern, recently bought out, close to the two buildings you were told about.

You could go declares yourselves.

You could see about sneaking inside.

You could eavesdrop.
