Personality
Shade spends a lot of time being angry - mostly at the Empire. Nevertheless, he avoids allowing that anger to distract him, as his clone programming compels him to give 100% effort to whatever mission he has been assigned. Shade was not designed to lead, and is more comfortable with someone giving him orders than issuing them. He has sufficient independence to act on his own, as well as interpreting his orders in the way that makes the most sense to him.

Once he grows comfortable with someone, Shade talks about things besides fighting the Empire, and may even feel comfortable enough to tell a war story or two. He finds that keeping himself busy with his hands is a good way to keep his anger from boiling over at those who don’t deserve it, and often seeks solitude to calm down. Regardless, he won’t abandon them or betray them - he’s been there, and he doesn’t want anyone else to suffer the same feeling.

He doesn’t like the Separatists or battle droids, but given that the war is over, he won’t cause them any problems unless he either knows they committed a war crime or they get violent first. That won’t stop him from calling battle droids “clankers”, though.

Physical Description
Shade stands 1.83 meters tall and weighs approximately 80 kilograms - much like other clones. He has tanned skin, brown eyes, and dark hair kept cropped close to his scalp. Unlike some clones, he has chosen not to grow facial hair. Although he no longer has clone commando armor, he is still armored in a gray combat suit, and doesn’t feel entirely comfortable without it. He keeps his knife and blaster rifle close by, in case he needs them.

After having been stranded on Felucia for several weeks, Shade has grown a rather bushy, unkempt beard, and his normally close cropped hair is cut short in ragged fashion - as though he just bunched it all together and cut it with a knife.

Background

Background

RC-9738 was a Clone Commando, grown on Kamino and trained to serve in a reconnaissance and infiltration role along with the rest of his unit - RC-9724 “Boomer”, RC-9741 “Flex”, and RC-9754 “Overwatch”. Their unit, Commando Squad 97, was first deployed to the D’Astan sector as part of an attempt to take the Separatist world of Serenno. During the Battle of Ord Radama, RC-9738 heard a local tell a story of shadowy creatures who struck in the night. Rather liking the description, and thinking it was a good description of himself, he took the name “Shade”.

After the Republic’s failure to take Serenno, Commando Squad 97 was reassigned to Boz Pity, under Jedi General Quinlan Vos. During the battle, Squad 97 proved instrumental in sabotaging Separatist positions, creating holes in their defensive perimeter and allowing the Republic forces to gain the advantage. As part of the Separatist forces desperate final defense, they shelled Republic positions with artillery, injuring Shade and Flex. The two were forced to sit out the final battle as they recovered.

Following the Republic victory at Boz Pity, General Vos took his forces to Kashyyyk, while Commando Squad 97 was reassigned to Felucia, under Jedi General Aayla Secura. The planet of Felucia featured some of the hardest fighting, as the 327th Star Corps attempted to capture Shu Mai, the leader of the Commerce Guild. Commando Squad 97 was assigned to identify and scout possible locations she could be hiding out. After three weeks, they identified a potential target and they, along with a specialized clone unit known as the Wraith Company under the command of CC-4873, Captain Travis, were tasked with hitting the site in a quick attack, grabbing the Separatist leader, and then retreating back to the army. The clones launched a nighttime attack, quietly taking out the sentries and then blitzing the encampment itself. Once they reached the command area, they found Shu Mai was gone, and was possibly even no longer on the planet. Worse, they found that the camp they hit would be reinforced within the hour! Breaking off the attack, the clones withdrew into the jungle, but their escape route was cut off by Separatist reinforcements. Thus began several days of a prolonged, tiring guerilla warfare campaign, as the clone troopers desperately tried to rendezvous with the rest of the Republic forces.

The droid army was jamming communications, so they couldn’t relay their position to the rest of the army or call for backup or evacuation. Despite inflicting heavy losses on the battle droids, the clones themselves were getting tired and low on ammunition and food. Wraith Company sustained heavy losses, until eventually there were only a scant 30 troopers left, including Captain Travis and Commando Squad 97. Certain death was near, the fleeing clones stumbled upon some Republic equipment left behind from the last battle on Felucia - 20 speeder bikes. With this discovery, Captain Travis and the Commandos came up with a plan. Instead of running away from the droid army after the next attack, this time they would use the speeder bikes to punch through the droid lines, escape the jamming, and meet back up with the main army. It was daring, and likely suicide, but they were dead no matter what. Better to face death head on.

The next morning, as dawn broke, the clones came screaming out of the jungle on speeder bikes, blasting away at the droid forces, maneuvering as they tried to find holes in the enemy lines through which they could escape. The clones started sustaining losses. Flex’s speeder bike took a direct hit from a battle droid tank, and soon 5 more speeder bikes had been shot down, the clones riding them dead. Overwatch, the squad’s sniper, who prided himself on the number of headshots he had, took a blaster bolt right through the eye, sending his bike flying off to crash into the Separatist ranks. Boomer armed every single explosive he had left and intentionally rammed his speeder bike into the command tank in a massive explosion that finally cleared the path for the others. Three more speeder bikes were destroyed as the clones flew for the hole, blasting past the droids even as they turned to give chase. Captain Travis, with Shade on the back of the bike, lead the charge, and the remaining clones vanished into the jungle, fleeing the droids - and leaving the bodies of their brothers behind. All told, there were just 12 clones left. Wraith Company was no more, and Shade was all that remained of Commando Squad 97.

Though they had expected to take at least 2 or 3 days to meet back up with the rest of the army, they were surprised when a mere 12 hours later, they found the bulk of the Republic forces. How could the army have been so close, and yet not attacked the Separatists or been looking for them? They rode into camp, tired and hungry. Medics came to attend to the clones, but Captain Travis and Shade went looking for General Secura. Entering the command post, they found only Commander Bly. Captain Travis angrily demanded to know why the army hadn’t come to their aid if they were so close by. Commander Bly stated more important orders had come through. The Jedi had betrayed the Republic, and they were carrying out Order 66 to execute the Jedi. Captain Travis seemed taken aback, but then nodded and said he understood.

Shade, however, couldn’t believe it. The clones were brothers. Every member of his squad, who he had trained with, fought with, laughed with - every member was dead. The exhaustion, grief, and anger of the last few days exploded out of him. He pounded his fist onto the table and, yelling, demanded to know why they would prioritize Order 66 when their brothers were out there, fighting for their lives. The war was against the Separatists - they could have executed the Jedi later! Even if they were going to waste time executing the Jedi before helping, why hadn’t they come to help after they were done? Commander Bly dismissed Shade, and told him he wasn’t in a position to question orders. Shade stormed out, angry. He spent the next two days digging graves for the clones who had perished trying to break through Separatist lines back to the rest of the army. No one helped him.

The army was recalled to Coruscant shortly thereafter - the Battle Droids were shut down, the Separatists defeated. The war was over, the Republic had fallen, and a new Empire had risen in its place. Shade remained angry. He felt betrayed - why had Order 66 taken such a high priority over the lives of the clones? Rumor had it Chancellor - no, Emperor Palpatine had issued the order himself. Why would Palpatine prioritize killing the Jedi over fighting the Separatists? He didn’t have any answers, but maybe someone else did.

Shade was reassigned to a new commando unit. Though incapable of giving less than his best effort, whenever he wasn’t on assignment, he was constantly badgering other clones, trying to find out more about the order. He came to develop a bit of a reputation as a pain in the rear, always angry. To top it off, he wasn’t so sure about this new Empire. For starters, despite being told that they were fighting Separatist remnants, his new unit seemed to spend a lot of time going after ordinary civilians and shaking them down. Shade didn’t see the threat, and often spoke up about it, but was simply told to follow orders. Shade felt there was something rotten about the whole thing, but he couldn’t say what. He began asking questions about that, too, until one day he found a comlink frequency written down under his pillow on his bunk.

Then word came down - the Kamino had been devastated by a massive storm. Tipoca City, the closest thing to “home” the clones had, was destroyed. In that moment, he knew, deep down, that there was more to the story than they were being told. He didn’t know what was happening, but he couldn’t be a part of it any more. He left the base without permission, disappearing into the sublevels of Coruscant. Eventually, he was able to get in contact with a clone presumed dead, Captain Rex, who could smuggle him off-world. While Rex transported him, he told Shade about the inhibitor chips that forced the clones to follow orders. Shade knew he needed to get rid of that chip as soon as he could. Rex dropped Shade off on Commenor, and from there, he made his way to the Outer Rim, offering his services carrying cargo containers in exchange for passage. Once in the Outer Rim, he thought to disappear, but a series of boring warehouse jobs and the occasional bit of mercenary work where all he did was look menacing were completely unsatisfying. In the back of his mind, he kept thinking about how so many clones had been abandoned on Felucia. He felt that he needed to go back there, to see where his brothers were buried again. Maybe, once he arrived there, he could find some answers to what happened. He bought a rather beat up freighter and a used piloting droid to get him there, and departed.

Upon entering orbit around Felucia, he gave the droid coordinates to land at. Then two Imperial TIE Fighters suddenly came up on the ship and opened fire. The used piloting droid decided that this was the exact moment to blow a motivator, and the TIEs fire blew out the engine, sending the ship careening towards the planet. Shade barely got to an escape pod in time, and after landing, went back to where his squad had fallen. There were the graves he’d dug, although someone had taken the blasters and discarded the helmets all over the place. He sat for a while, experiencing the grief of their deaths all over again. After several hours, he decided that their deaths needed to be avenged. The droids may have been the ones that killed them, but the Empire abandoned them. He would make the Empire pay for it. He was just one clone, stranded on a planet covered in a fungal rainforest, but he would find a way. First step, figure out where those fighters had come from, and see if that offered a way he could get off the planet - and maybe blow the base up while he was at it. Just like the good old days.

Notes

Shade wants revenge against the Empire for the deaths of his squad.
Shade has never attacked a Jedi, nor has he specifically been ordered to execute Order 66.
Shade is loyal to the Republic - but the Empire is not the Republic.
Due to his commando training, Shade is more independent than a lot of the rank and file clones.

Goals and Motivations
Short-Term Goals
1. Acquire a new DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System
2. Get his inhibitor chip removed
3. Get off Felucia

Long-Term Goals
1. Find out why Order 66 was given higher priority than fighting the Separatist armies
2. Find a way to severely hurt the Empire and maybe bring back the Republic he served faithfully.
3. Maybe one day find a new squad. He doubts he’ll ever feel a bond as strong as that with his brothers, but it might help him feel less lonely.

Non-tangible motivations
1. I’ve been abandoned before, and I’ll never leave an ally behind.
2. Make the Empire pay for the deaths of my brothers.

Non-Core Options:

The only non-core options I have at this time are the Clone species from the Clone Wars Campaign Guide and the Survival Knife from the Unkown Regions guide.

@Malkavian Grin could you tell me if any of the following options would be approved for down the line?

Infiltrator Prestige Class

Vanguard Prestige Class

Republic Commando Talent Tree for the Elite Trooper Prestige Class

Katarn-Class Commando Armor from Galaxy at War

Infiltrator and Vanguard are both a-okay! If you happen to go with Elite Trooper, then the Republic Commando tree is fine too.

I'm okay with the armor, but I think it should be a character point of receiving it since it's both strong and cool; doing someone powerful a side-favor (a la Switch). Thoughts?

I'm absolutely okay with that plan. Shade didn't get to meet Switch, so that'll be a very interesting interaction.

I just needed to know because if you're going to wear armor regularly in Saga, you need to invest in it with feats/talents, otherwise you're eventually better off going unarmored.

Like most protagonists in Star Wars.

Very true. You can make armor worthwhile but as you said only by investing in it. Worry not, we'll have a way to work it in.

I don't think it'll be actually Switch, just a similar situation where you're there for one thing but pick up a side quest too.

@Phntm888 Hey, I'm wondering about your thoughts on a side thread for Shade and Nina talking about Shade's stuff. He said (and did) some things in the IC thread that had Nina concerned. So she wants to talk about it. And I think the current thread with the ex-admiral isn't the right time or place to talk about that stuff. So...

1. Do you think a separate side thread would be better or is Shade the kind of guy who would talk about this stuff in front of the ex-admiral?

2. Do you foresee Shade opening up to the degree that a side thread would be helpful or will Shade's answers be short and evasive--to the degree that they are not "side thread worthy."

3. Would you prefer an "everyone is invited side thread"? In case it saves you from having to explain the same stuff more than once.

I mean, Shade's not a covert agent. I'd be okay with a side thread for discussing whatever Shade's said that has Nina concerned - there isn't much he could be asked about that he would be short and evasive about, depending on what Nina wants. I'm fine with an "everyone is invited" side thread, since I doubt I'd be talking about anything that didn't need to be common knowledge.
