he's an apothecary, so his primary role is not to go out there and kill everything that moves.

Not to impinge on your vision for the character, but an apothecary isn't necessarily a healbot - I've played an apothecary before, and he was just as good at killing everything as the rest of the squad. No need for healing if they never take any damage 😁.

Is that a statement about your character, or the rest of the group? In theory, if the game is properly balanced, an apothecary should never match the more offensively-oriented specialists in combat. I'm aware that it's possible to build an extremely deadly apothecary, though, especially if you combine it with a chapter that has some good offensive talents. For example one like... the Blood Angels.

It's more a matter of me not wanting to play that kind of character right now. I want him to be a deadly space marine, but he needn't be the deadliest SoB that exists out there. The character I envision is a bit more than just a graceful murder machine. But make no mistake; if sawing something in two solves a problem, he will not hesitate to do that for a single moment.

Also, what kind of enemies were you fighting if you took no damage? In the only Deathwatch game I was in, a single good attack from a Tyranid would cleave through significantly more than half the wounds of any character.

a lot of the pictures, particularly of the emperor, have pauldrons so large that they completely rob the one using it from every inch of periphery vision.

I think the pauldrons have a twofold origin, being something left over from the over-the-top 1980s origins, as well as coming from the fact 40k is a miniatures wargame first and foremost - much of the space marine weirdness, from their bizarre proportions to their bright colours, comes from them needing to be recognisable on tabletop where they're small plastic army men.

I see that I can start the game with a slightly excessive skill of 110 in Medicae. If you consider that a problem, please speak up.

I don't have an issue with it personally, Deathwatch does have a balancing issue but imo it's usually better to lean into the patent ridiculousness than to try to patch it out. The last time I ran Deathwatch, for example, the kill-team drove a rhino at top speeds into a hive tyrant. It can be part of the fun of the game 😄 Just don't deliberately try to break the system/meta-game

I'm sure the Rule of Cool play a role as well.

That sounds awesome!

I'm not planning to. As long as we use the errata, I don't know of any ways to intentionally break the game.

Crossing my fingers that I get picked, 'cause I have way more interest in the game than I have issues with it.

I was in that game, and we made minced meat of this Xenos. Let's just say that thr heavy bolters on the Rhino + hellfire rounds was really effectives ways to bring the hive tyrant down. I remember that Imassacred a horde of Tau next mission after, with a flamer.

It was like four years ago now so I could be totally wrong, but I'm gonna guess you were the Black Templar, and Dybrar was the Consecrator...?

Also for everyone still waiting on a sheet review, I'll hopefully get to that tomorrow! Along with an attempt at homebrewing some 30k war crime very normal weapons

Yes, the Black Templar Tactical Marine. Dybar was playing a Storm Warden apothecary. It been a long time indeed.

Hey folks - super interested in joining this game but very impressed with some of the sheet templates that a few people have used for their characters. Is there a generator somewhere to help speed up this process? Thanks!

Nothing I've come across. Just a lot of spit, duck tape and hope.
