"Any time," Sassamona says to Lidda with a half a nod. Her smug smile withers, however, when Yod asks her if she'd actually seen a giant. She covers her face with her mug as she takes a sip. "I never seen one," she mumbles. But her grin returns just as quickly when sees Yod was just joking with her. "And what a fine tavern it is!" she cheers. "Best in Daggerford!"

"Yer all right," she says to the folks at the table. "Are you guys giant hunters or somethin'? I hear there's a big prize to anyone's got the guts to kill one."

She's quite surprised to hear Duala's voice and her urbane choice of words. What could they be talking about? she wonders when Duala goes over to Garon by the fire. And then a colorful tortle with a bird joins them! It's like a whole 'nother world over there. Sassamona realizes she's been staring and turns her attention elsewhere.

Her eyes fall on Sketvid, specifically his huge frame and huge sword. That's a man—and a sword—that could kill a giant, maybe. She shouts over to him, "Hey you, you with the bear fur, you eva' seen a giant?"

Lidda smiles at Yod. She finds herself really enjoying his company and humor. Sure, he's a bit socially awkward, but who isn't at times.

"Yes, my teacher Torbera Stonescale is a dwarf. Sorry I didn't make it clear. I hope she's still alive when I return. She's pretty spry despite pushing 400, but there's no telling when her drinking will do her in. Or maybe that's what keeping her alive? Being well-preserved in alcohol?"

Yod receives a knowing grin. It's a common joke among dwarves.

Lidda enjoys her food while listening to the others talk of giants. She's a tiny bit disappointed none of them have seen any, even if she knows she shouldn't be. I guess most people that meet giants also meet their end.

It looks like the girl, Sassamona, took no offense, much to her relief.

"Are you guys giant hunters or somethin'? I hear there's a big prize to anyone's got the guts to kill one."

"We just met, so I can't speak for the others, but doubt any of us here are giant hunters," she says, putting down her spoon, "To me that sounds like an extremely dangerous, perhaps even suicidal, endeavor."

She receives some questioning looks, considering she was the one who brought up the topic of giants first.

"I'm only after their runes," she clarifies, "The dream scenario would be to find a friendly giant that can teach me runecraft, but I realize that's completely unrealistic. Instead, I want to seek out the people that originally adopted the giants' runes to their own use, or at least their students or grandstudents. I hope they can help me out."

The thought of killing a giant scares her for more reasons than one. She has yet to kill anyone, let alone a giant. Will she be able to do it if it is necessary? It's a moot point; she's completely unable to, so why does it matter?

"Uhm. Is anyone else here headed for Nightstone because of the goblins? I have heard plenty, but never met any goblins myself. Can they be reasoned with? Is it possible to convince them to leave the town alone without, you know, killing all of them?"

IC: “My words,” | ‘My thoughts,'  | My actions

Garon's smile saddens a bit when he realizes Duala realizes that he is lying but brightens again when she lets him off and doesn't pursue the poor deception. He doesn't have much practice at and is instinctively uncomfortable with lying, but if he didn't, he would have called out that woman who left the door open for doing something wrong. And that would not be cautious.

Replying to the half-orc, he shrugs and offers, "Drink? It sounds like the tortle has more experienced tastes than I do. I just drink what I'm served." Turning to the tortle, he welcomes them, "please join us. This is Duala, and I am Garon."

Turning back to Duala, he changes the subject with a bit of relief and genuine curiosity, "traveling north? Daggerford is the furthest south that I regularly travel. Where are you from?" Then, turning to the tortle, he adds before taking another sip from his silver cup, "and you too? Where are you from traveling to Daggerford?"

His ears perk at the subjects of giants and Nightstone, but he keeps his attention on the half-orc and tortle. 'Always keep your ears open for opportunity.'

“My words,” Sketvid said. | ‘My thoughts’ Sketvid thought. |

Sketvid grunted appreciatively when his food and drink was delivered and pulled a gold coin from his belt and placed it on the table. The server made change and he scooped the coins up and put them back wherever the original gold came from.
Drinking and eating slowly, he tries to follow some of the conversations taking place around him.

He stops with a piece of cheese halfway to his mouth when the turtle-man walks in. He watches him and then his eyes widen even more when the turtle-man uses magic. The hand not holding cheese reaches up to pull a small leather pouch that hangs around his neck out from under his shirt. He grips it and closes his eyes while mumbling something quietly. When he’s done, he finishes the bite of cheese but his eyes follow the turtle-man.

His attention is pulled from the turtle-man by a young girl with strange colored hair, “Giant? No. I have not had honor to fight giant yet. Why you look for giants?”

When Lidda mentions goblins, his attention swings to her. “You! Little one”, he says in his accented Common and pointing, “There are goblins here in this place? They are making problem?”

Having been quietly focused on eating while keeping his hood in place up to this point, Balthoz jerked his head when Sassamona called for someone with bear fur. His attention had been captured before he realized the comment wasn't about him - Thoz hadn't spent much time in human society, but enough to have suffered insults about his animalistic appearance more than once, and he was not one to stand for insults.

The tension that had raised his hackles was unwarranted this time though - at least for now. Regarding the speaker and those involved with her line of questioning, he huffed and tried to keep his lips close as he smiled amusedly.

"You don't 'hunt' giants. For one, they aren't animals to stuff and prop up in a lodge... and for another, they aren't exactly hard to find when they're around."

Looking to the other, more bookish woman *(Lydda), Thoz gave an appreciative nod.

"You got a bit more respect I see, that's good. As far as goblins - I wouldn't trust a one of them if they did cut a deal. Could be fun to watch you try though, and yeah... I'm heading to Nightstone. Name's Balthoz."

Keeping his cloak raised, he knew the big man next to him wouldn't miss his own goblinoid features, but Thoz wasn't eager to draw attention to them.

"Here? Not as far as I know. But in the next town over, Nightstone, they apparently have a problem with goblins. Are you familiar with their kind?"

The next guy to speak up is one she hasn't taken note of so far. She is pretty good at keeping track of her surroundings, but there are so many colorful people here that it's easy to miss those that don't draw attention to themselves. With his hood on, it is hard to make out his features. Does he have something to hide? Maybe he does, but she won't prod; his business is his own, as long as he doesn't hurt anyone.

"Good evening to you, Balthoz. I am Lidda Hilltopple," she says and gives him a nod.

"It sounds like you have experience with goblins. I'd appreciate any wisdom you are willing to share," she says with a smile. "Perhaps you'd like to hear of my folly and provide your thoughts?"

"I don't expect that I can just walk up to a goblin camp, share some tea and speak candidly. I am, however, hoping that there exists a compromise that both the town and the goblins can accept. My mother taught me that there's a rule that all populations must adhere to: If a group within an ecosystem is sufficiently reduced, another group will move in to fill the void left by the first group. In essence: I believe that simply wiping out the goblins, or any other similar problem group for that matter, is likely to create new problems further down the lane."

She shrugs. "But I accept that there are times when no good alternatives exists."

“My words,” Yod said. | ‘My thoughts,’  Yod thought. | My actions . . .

Yod nods slightly to Duala, respecting her desire not to be in this mass of people. He doesn't mind company when the mood strikes him, and after some time on the road, it seems like a fine thing to have someone else to talk to. But it can tax a dwarf.

As the talk turns from giants to goblins, he scowls, knowing perhaps a little too much about filthy vermin. He asks, "Anyone been to Nightstone? I thought it was a proper town. You wouldn't think any place with any organized militia would be worried about some gobos. They tend to fight in packs, though, right? They are far too cowardly to be fighting on their lonesome. Goblins are meean. You find one, it ain't so tough. But you get a bunch together, then you got yourself something to worry about."

He looks to the ragged woman who introduced herself as Sassamona and asks, "You are from around here, right? You heard about goblin problems here or in Nightstone? How long you been kicking around Daggerford?"

It's always difficult right around this point in the pre-game IC thread to sort through all the responses!

"I ain't lookin' for..." Sassamona was answering Sketvid's question when a more pressing matter arises.

"Huh?!" She abruptly stands up, knocking her chair to the floor with a bang, her attention shifting fifteen degrees to the right(or left, depending on where Balthoz is sitting relative to Sketvid), from Sketvid to the fellow who had just "corrected" her. Her brow furrows, her mouth opens slightly as she stares daggers at him. "I know that. For one," she imitates Balthoz's phrasing, "I know that giants are people. I just said so." She's forgotten that Balthoz likely did not hear her "enlightening" lecture on the true nature of giants. "For two, you can hunt people; it's allowed if a lord says it's okaySassamona is angry, and she's saying something she doesn't really mean.. Ipso facto"—trying to sound smart, she misuses an archaic phrase—"the goblin thing."

Then a voice in the back of her head says, 'Don't do anything that'll make Glenys throw you out again.' Her rage runs out of steam as she realizes that she's really fundamentally in agreement with Balthoz (and Yod for that matter; unfortunately, Lidda's genuinely enlightening lecture on population dynamics passes in one ear and out the other), not to mention that Balthoz could well be twice her size, though it's hard to tell with his thick robes.

Sassamona picks up her chair and sits back down. "But he's right about the goblins," she says, less loudly. She intends for Balthoz not to hear, but she's not exactly whispering. Turning to Yod, she continues, "From Waterdeep. I've come through here lotsa times, been guardin' caravans, seen some goblins. They always run away though, when we show we're armed. I was gonna stop at Nightstone on my way back home and try my hand at fightin' them off," she says, to answer Lidda's question. "Those goblins, I mean. I bet it'll be easy to scare 'em away. And for Lady Na... Nan... Nada? For the Lady in charge of there, I think it's cheaper for her to bring in outsiders."

Sassamona suddenly wonders if these people are all going to Nightstone for the very same reward she is seeking. "Hey, smartypants," she shouts at Balthoz again, "Why're you goin' to Nightstone?"

Duala weighs the Tortle's words. Then she makes her choice. "I'll try the Golden Sands next." She says it loud enough for a server to hear. She looks back to both Garon and Qu. "Nothing against Elves. Just try to steer clear of any luxury where someone needs to say 'if you have the coin'. I mean, for something important, but not for a second drink of the night and nothing to celebrate or honor."

Duala looks Qu up and down, really taking him in. "You strike me as someone who knows interesting things beyond food and drink pairings. Come. What's a wisdom, a knowledge, even a tale you can share with strangers, leave them better for hearing it?" There's a curious smile and glint to her eye as she makes the request.

Tortle Faction Agent (Harpers) Order of Scribes Wizard

“My words,” Qu said. | ‘My thoughts, Qu thought. | My actions . . .

The tortle nods his head, and says, "Thank you, I believe I will sit. Daron, Guala, I am Qu." The name comes out as more of a sound than a moniker, reminiscent of a dove's cooing, but with a sharp snap at the beginning. He removes his hat as he takes a seat, and slides it a little closer to the fire.

The colorful bird on his head flutters, briefly takes wing, and sings a little song in irritation, although the last bit of its song are the clear words, 'buggeroff, ya git.' The tortle ignores this, and the bird settles on the back of his chair. "Oh! I am also traveling north. Ah, I am currently based out of Waterdeep, but, ah, there are complications, so I, well, it doesn't matter. Yes, though, the Golden Sands is quite good. I ordered some cheese and hardbread, I think you will find the combination quite palatable." At about that time, the snacks and his drink arrive, and he gestures to the others to help themselves.

"As for stories, well, I am no bard, you understand. I have stories from scrolls and books I have transcribed, but" he chuckles, happily, "I'll have to think on something appropriate. In the meantime, there is cheese to eat, wine to drink, and a warm fire with new friends. Self improvement is the last thing on my mind," he confides, cheerfully, as he breaks a piece of hardbread and offers some to his bird. Mollified, the parrot takes the cracker and begins eating.

Garon tried not to show disappointment when both Duala and Qu failed to answer his question about where they were from. He lets the conversation comfortably pause letting the warmth of the fire seep into his body. He takes a couple more sips from his silver cup staring at the fire.

He breaks the silence by offering where he is from hoping they will reciprocate, "I'm returning home to Amphail. It's past Waterdeep following the inland road north. I plan to visit Nightstone on my way before Waterdeep. What are your plans?"

He listens for any response from anyone overhearing his Nightstone plans but keeps his visual attention on the half-orc and tortle.

“My words,” Sketvid said. | ‘My thoughts’ Sketvid thought. |

So many people. So many strange people all speaking at once. It was hard for Sketvid to follow. The magic turtle-man made him wary, too. The Shaman had warned him he would see people doing magic, and that Sketvid should not kill them outright unless they were making trouble. It didn't look like the turtle-man was making trouble, so Sketvid would not kill him. But still, the use of magic made him wary. He gripped the pouch around his neck again, feeling the bones inside and felt some comfort.

The conversations continued, mostly about Goblins and a place called Nightstone. Goblins were probably not what he was seeking, but how could he be sure? The only way to know would be to go there and see.

"Young one", he says loudly to Sassamona, "If you go to this 'Nightstone' to kill goblins, I will go with you. Some of these others should go too.", he says gesturing around the room. "There are always many goblins. Many many. We go there, we kill some and the rest run away. Goblins always run away." With that, he goes back to eating his cheese and apple.

Narrowing his eyes, the hobgoblin can't help but grin at Sassamona, he could see how his attempt at warning her off could be taken wrongly. He had had the superiority of his father's people instilled in him his whole life - the Ordning didn't have much to say about the various small folk, but it was clear enough.

"Suppose you're right. Common isn't common where I'm from - we have separate words for hunting and 'hunting'. As for my reasons for heading that way, not so different than the rest of this lot. Information, opportunity and ... what's the word? Adventure?"

Looking to Lidda. Thoz shakes his head and shrugs.

"I know what it looks like, but I've had less experience with goblinkind than you might think. Once is enough though to know they are the lowest of a low bunch. You can scrape their honor off your boot with a stick."

Reaching into his coinpurse and thumbing through his dwindling funds, he leaves the tip for his meal and takes the last good meat chunk, tearing into it behind a shielding hand for courtesy sake, then turns his chair around to join their table. He rolls back a sleeve and presents an old burnscar to Ms. Hilltopple - it is intricate and angular, suggesting ritualistic application.

"You know something about runecraft?"

Duala relents taking the opportunity to learn something new and settles more into her chair as she makes short work of the first salmon. Her manners are well enough while eating save perhaps she chews a bit quickly, looking more like she's fueling herself more than savoring each bite. "Learn how to survive the harsh cold, train myself, find people who impress me and learn how to be a leader from them. Likely stumble and fail, and pick myself up. I'll take whatever opportunities come. If it turns out there's not much to do, then I'll go back south myself to somewhere that does. Afraid I've no master plan, at least for this part of my life. Just know that I need to do something and this trip is just that, doing something." She looks up in reflection. "As to where I'm from, nowhere in particular. To be a bit more clear I was on the move, and I was often as not in chains when I did. When I was about the age of that young woman over there, who I was would probably make her look like the most delicate and charming princess, pink dress, frills, and all compared to the utter mess I was." She's referring to Sassamona with her comparison.

"That's a life behind me I'd hope. Well, other than a bit of a soft spot for others toiling and struggling, but I suppose I'd best stop there before I let my passions get the better of me and I start making bold political declarations in a room full of strangers, no?" Her knowing smile says she's taking good humor in it all, but that she very well could make such a speech if prompted.

Lidda regrets a bit sharing from her mother's teachings. She has a distinct feeling that some of the looks she receives are of people pitying her naivety. They're not completely wrong; it is naïve to believe she can always follow her ideals. But without ideals and the will to at least attempt to follow them, what's the difference between people and beasts, or perhaps even the monsters?

It sounds like both he and Sassamone are speaking from experience. With how common goblins supposedly are, she is probably the weirder one for never having encountered any so far. If there were any in Chondalwood, they either lived far from their home, or her mother deliberately shielded her from them. And the dwarves in the citadel would never allow them anywhere close.

"I admit that sounds like a very practical solution. Scaring them off might solve the problem for a while... assuming the task is to stop goblins incursions or something like that. We'll have to see, or rather hear, exactly what the issue is when we get to Nightstone."

She stops one sentence short of inviting him to join her on the road. He seems genuine, but she prefers to know a bit more about him before offering her trust.

"Would you be willing to tell me a bit about yourself, warrior? My name is Lidda Hilltopple, as you may have already heard. What is yours?"

The hooded one speaks up, sharing some thoughts that leave her a bit puzzled. She grows curious about him. Is he peculiar in a way she ought to recognize? Too bad she is woefully ignorant when it comes to the different tribes and groups of people that live here. That's something she should address before it comes to bite her in the foot.

4 hours ago, Quint Essence said:

"I know what it looks like, but I've had less experience with goblinkind than you might think. Once is enough though to know they are the lowest of a low bunch. You can scrape their honor off your boot with a stick."

Know what it looks like? What is she missing here? Was that aimed at someone else, like Sassamona or Yod? Perhaps he believes she figured something out?

She is about to ask if he is willing to tell more about himself, when he starts speaking of runes. Everything else is instantly forgotten as she darts up from her seat and gets closer to examine it. She gets as close as she dares without giving offense, studying the marking intently. A tiny part of her brain is a bit horrified about what looks to be the result of ritual scarification, but it is drowned in her enthusiasm for the rune itself.

"I'm ashamed to admit I don't immediately recognize the rune," she grimaces, "It bears a resemblance to some runes I know. Perhaps it is from a different dialect of runes than I am familiar with. Do you happen to know if this is an original Giant rune or if it is the result of the adaption performed to make use of runes for non-Giants? Perhaps it's a combined rune, made up of two or more? Please give me a moment; I want to scribe down a copy of it."

I base Lidda's knowledge of specific runes on those listed on the Forgotten Realms wiki.
