When Qu offered his kind remarks about Duala still fighting an old fight, there's a strange glint in her eye, but she seems to take it in stride, not feeling the need to say any more on the matter, at least for the time being. Instead, she listens to the interesting stranger, from a land she's not heard of, a follower of a deity she does not know.

She's near done with her meal, and her second drink seeming to be a bit more relaxed as she speaks. "I am curious. What will learning about your people's history bring you? I mean not to challenge you, I imagine there's much that you can gain. I only wonder which particular thing drives you. Knowledge? Wisdom? Some ancient tools that can solve today's woes?" She pauses for a moment, deciding to explain herself better. "Take me. I want to grow stronger, physically, mentally, even magically. Plenty of reasons for a person to want this. Some people are competitive, others need it to survive, perhaps wish to slay a foe or save a loved one. Heck, no few just want the thrill, the gold, the glory. Me? I wish to break chains. I wish to do the same kindness onto others than was done for me, whether we want to call it an old battle, or a new one. Still, if it were so easy as good intentions with a sword and shield in hand, then all of us would be free to live our lives peacefully. And so, I look for strength."

She finishes her drink and leans back. "And so I ask you good sir, all of you even, your why?"

"It's kind of a long story," Sassamona says to Yod and Lidda and the others at the table, before diving in to said story. "A few months back, I was at the Temple of Beauty. Well, not at the Temple, more like—ya see they'll pay you a whole silver piece just to take out their garbage every week if you say you're with the guild, and most of the stuff they're tossing ain't even trash. But that's where I am, on my way to the dump, and I'm poking through it, right? cuz the flea market's next day, and I see this weird scroll; it kinda hurts when you look at it. I've got to decide what to do, like, maybe it's really valuable? I can't take it back to the Temple because what if they want it back? So I go to my buddy Gammaleela—she's a wizard, you know—and she says it ain't a magic scroll, but I oughta take it to these Sun Soul guys on Lamp and Andamar." Sassamona pauses to take a sip of her drink.

"Trust me, you ain't missin' much if you never been there. But you're right, they do worship Lathander, Selune too, and the cool ones go for Sune. But I get there and it's this, uh, clubhouse place where they do shadow boxing. But it ain't really shadow boxing, more like bright boxing, since they're shootin' these light beams outa their palms. I swear, they really do it! Anyway, I show them my scroll; they ask me where I got it; I say it was a gift from Lady Firehair—because it was; and they offer to trade it for 'self defense' lessons. Obviously I accept because energy beams are the coolest thing ever." Yet Sassamona's face shows slight irritation. "Only these so-called lessons came with all kinds of stupid rules, like: take off your shoes when you enter; use proper language; and 'Sassamona, don't leave garbage on the front porch.' I left with my scroll after the first day. I guess Sun Bolts ain't in my future." Sassamona leans back in her chair, having forgotten why she'd even brought the topic up in the first place.

"Anything like that ever happen ta you?" She inquires about the pasts of anyone who's still listening.

She listens intently if Tempest talks about what Sassamona understands to be 'giant-hunting club for rich people' or if Balthoz answers Sketvid's question about the calamity.

Pleasantly surprised by the halfling's delayed notice of his nature, Balthoz took note of why it had been as her attention flitted to the far more unique newcomer - a type of folk he had not heard about let alone encountered.

Certainly wasn't expecting this type of crowd before making it to the inn myself either.

He listened to people mention various factions, all of which were foreign to him, but sparked interest nonetheless - especially this Sun Soul. He would be interested in following up on that if he and the practitioner ended up traveling the remaining distance together. When others suggested partying up for safety, he resolved to take the chance if it were offered to him.

Then the the big man demanded attention. Thoz may have little experience with socializing, but the warrior was an open book and his directness was appreciated.

"Big trouble, yeah. Not the kind that needs respect though - nothing to boast about. Kinda trouble you make without knowing it just by being there. What about you? You look like you know more about the good kind of trouble than I do - something worth talking about."

Thoz gives a nod to the oversized weapon Sketvid has no issue wrangling even in a crowded room.

Wow, Lidda thinks as she listens to Sassamona's tale. She is both amazed and flabbergasted in equal amounts. It fits so well with the girl's demeanor, though. She finishes her noodles while Sassamona talks.

"I am very grateful for sharing the tale," the halfling says honestly, "I find myself amazed, and a bit perplexed."

She puts the empty bowl down.

"I feel that my tale pale in comparison to yours. Or, perhaps, my tale has yet to truly begin. I can share what little there is to say."

"My home is in Chondalwood, in the Vilhon Reach. I never expected to leave my home, until I witnessed an old dwarven woman turn into a bear to defend her companions. The woman, Torbera Stonescale, accepted me as her apprentice, brought me to her home in Hillsafar Hall, and taught me the runes of power. Once I mastered the basics, she sent me here -- or rather, to the Savage Frontier -- to learn more. Apart from the trip to Hillsafar, the travel back to greet my family and the road here, I am quite inexperienced in the world, as you can probably tell."

She stares into her empty cup. Many others were nursing interesting drinks, and she is feeling a bit left out. "Just a moment," she mutters, leaps down from her chair and climbs up to the bar, calling for Glenys' attention. She realizes that she is competing with a weasel for the innkeeper's time. The mysterious animal is probably stranger than anything else she has seen in here so far, including the weird elven lady. She tries to catch the animal's attention, but it seems to be uninterested or busy.

The innkeeper stops in front of Lidda, listing up the alternatives again. Looks like she is completely ignoring the weasel. Maybe that's the wisest choice, considering it doesn't looks like it wants to be bothered? There are too many options to choose from and Lidda has no idea what half of them are. "Do you have something a bit sweet and not too strong?" she asks. The innkeeper suggests Guldathan nectar, which sounds good to the halfling until she hers the price, which quickly causes her to change her mind.

The strange elven lady does more weird stuff while Lidda makes her way back to her chair with a cup of cider in her hands. Did she just turn the pillar sideways? she asks herself. Wait, is that even possible? The pillar is carrying the roof, and there wasn't even a hint of sound Lidda could pick up... so was it real? The rest of the room seems surprisingly muted in their reactions. Lidda is curious about the lady and considers inviting her to the table, but she's not sure everyone will appreciate that. The half-orc got up and left, after all. At least she looks like she has found good company at a different table. Besides, there are many other interesting people that also tickle her curiosity.

The not-human scarred man seems unwilling to share his tale, but perhaps someone else is willing to throw their hat into the ring? "If someone else would like to share a tale of their past, I'm very interested," she says loud enough for most of the room to hear.

“My words,” Yod said. | ‘My thoughts,’  Yod thought. | My actions . . .

Yod nods respectfully to Sassamona. He notes several things about the speaker as she tells her tale. He can appreciate the work she put in to get getting a few coins, and the fact that she values money so much. Neither are bad nor good, but she seems like a hard working sort that somewhat bristles with authority. Still, someone who takes control of her own destiny. The dwarf says, "It took some courage to head there. No telling if they would have just forced you to turn over the scroll. And yeah, I can imagine that lot having a fair number of rules. Perhaps closing one door opens another. Good for you for knowing what you want."

Hearing Lidda explain how she met her dwarven mentor, something catches his ear. Yod asks, "So Lidda, you ain't never been to Nightstone? First time?" The dwarf is not eager to get lost again.

He pauses a moment and chimes in with a bit of his past saying, "I come from the mines of Mirabar, up north in the Spine of the World. Being born an Ironbeard, I have no choice but to work the stone. I was a bit of a stone mason, nothing like my dad, but good enough. The year after my dad died, the Council of Sparkling Stones asked me to help set up this ritual for them. I don't know no magic, but I know stone. And my dad left instructions for it. I messed up one of the runes, though, and it didn't work like it was supposed to. A little too late, I figured out what happened and when I fixed it...something weird happened. With me being the only one there, I got marked with the mantle of the Ancestral Guardian."

Thinking a moment, he scowls and adds, "It's supposed to be a big honor. But it's a bit of a pain in the ass if I'm being honest. Always being told what to do and to live up to your destiny. I was a stone mason, what did I know about fighting? Well, I had to learn fast, let me tell you."

Looking back down at his glass of whisky, he decides to leave the last swallow and tosses the glass on the table. There are important details he decided to leave out... no need to advertise to a bunch of strangers.

Garon could not believe the distance the reptilian had traveled. As he prepared to answer Zhasi's question as to the distance from Daggerford to Nightstone, the food arrives. And, Glenys accompanies the servants with a bottle to refill Garon's silver cup without asking or comment.

After the troops returns to the kitchen, Garon offers, "yes, Nightstone is a good long day's ride north toward Waterdeep a little bit off the Trade Way. Probably two long days by foot. Maybe longer if it's still snowing." He follows with another sip of his refreshed vintage.

Garon watches Duala's answer Qu with such a force of personality in amazement. She asks such wonderful questions and knows what she wants to do, more specifically than he does. His mind dazzles as he swirls in introspection as to how he could answer her questions. But, he cannot verbalize to strangers that he wants to become a hero, too. 'No, I'll have that meal with Lady Velrosa Nandar. She knew what I should do.'

Then, the young man offers his less than philosophical, very pragmatic answer to the half-orc's question on one's purpose in life, "um, why I'm traveling to Nightstone? Um, someone invited me to share meal." He takes another sip of his silver cup to hide his avoidance of taking control of his own life.

Tortle Faction Agent (Harpers) Order of Scribes Wizard

“My words,” Qu said. | ‘My thoughts, Qu thought. | My actions . . .

Qu shrugs, an odd movement on his tortoise body. Mostly, he just raises and lowers his shell around his neck. "I travel for the sake of it," he says, with some wonder himself that his words are true. "I spent a lot of time learning, and just recently remembered that there is a whole world out there. So, now I am off to see it. I can respect your journeys, though; knowledge, self-improvement, a meal. I suppose I am just interested in, well, being interested." He laughs again, as though at some private joke, and even his parrot tilts its head at him before going back to its cracker. The parrot hops down to his platter, steals a grape, and flutters back to its perch.

"You asked me before about a story, Duala, and I can't help but think of one I was told about an elf from my homeland. In the story, this elf, he was nearing six hundred years of age, and he had spent all his time in and out of his workshop, carving beautiful figures from wood and jade. But one day, he left."

"The details about why he did, they are lost to time, but during his trip, he was waylaid by displacer beasts. They appeared and disappeared, and he ran, but he was never sure if he was ahead of them or behind them, you know. He was turned around, but kept running, desperate to survive, unsure how many there were." Qu takes another sip of his wine, and hums in pleasure.

"Running, he became turned around, and before he knew it, he was at a cliff. Behind him, the displacer beasts. Before him, a drop to sharp rocks and the uncaring sea below. He heard a sound behind him, and slipped; not to his immediate death, though, as he caught in his hand the root of a great tree, and hung from it, between the void and the displacers' teeth. Looking up, he saw several sets of eyes glaring down at him. Looking down, only crushing rocks and the sea." The tortle pauses for a moment, takes some hardbread with cheese and half a grape on it, and looks at it thoughtfully. "Next to him, on the cliff face, he saw a small crack where there grew a vine, on it three grapes. As the hand holding the root started to tire and ache, the root started to shift and break, he reached out and grabbed the grapes. The elf ate them quickly, and, well, they were the sweetest grapes he had ever had in almost six hundred years."

Qu tasted his cracker, crunched the cheese and grape and hardbread in his beak, chewed it thoughtfully.

"I think that's the story I owed you, in return for your kind request."

The door opens again and a black haired man with dusky skin steps in, taking great care closing the door behind him and shutting out the bad weather outside

"The gods bless all assembled here." he announces to the assembled guests in a sonorous baritone. . His style of clothing is what one would call extravagant, under a purple coat with red lining he wears lose black pants sticking in boots, and a black tunic embroidered on the arms and neck with gold thread and held together by a crimson sash.

"I was hoping to find here a quarter for the night and something hot to eat. Your northern weather is a bit chill for me."

He acquires from Glenys a bowl of noodles and some hot apple cider and looks around for an empty chair or table to sit down with his meal. spotting an empty table he settles down and let his eyes wander over the assembled crowd. Thinking "this is already a pretty lively crowd, I better observe this a bit to learn their customs. I wouldn't want to cause an incident"

Lidda listens as Yod shares his thoughts on Sassamona's tale. He shows a lot more insight than she expected, causing her to be ashamed of herself. I've already failed dad's most important advice: Never underestimate anyone, she mentally scolds herself, And I've done so at least twice already! I have much to learn. Embarrassing as it is, at least it didn't lead to bodily harm this time.

6 hours ago, Shadeus said:

"So Lidda, you ain't never been to Nightstone? First time?"

She shakes her head. "No, I'm afraid not. I was under the impression that it would be reasonably easy to find, but your experience makes me unsure. Sassamona, do you know the way?" she turns to the haregon, "How about you, uhm... I don't think I caught your name?"

When Yod mentions the runes he messed up, the halfling perks up. She patiently waits for the dwarf to finish his tale, barely able to keep her enthusiasm under lid. Stay calm, she tells herself, Be polite.

"Condolences for your father. Is it appropriate to congratulate you for becoming the Ancestral Guardian, or would that be insulting? And ... uhm... if I may ask, can you tell me more about the ritual and the runes? Only if it's not a secret, of course."

“My words,” Yod said. | ‘My thoughts,’  Yod thought. | My actions . . .

Yod nods in acknowledgment of Lidda's condolences. He says, "It's been years now, but thanks. I don't know much about the ritual. It's like pounding out a cuirass for a suit of plate. It's just a piece of the whole process, and it's those that are running the ceremony that invoke the magic. "

Taking a deep breath, the dwarf admits, "It's supposed to be this great honor to be an Ancestral Guardian. They had someone all picked out, but it didn't work. And when I fixed the rune stones, it ended up choosing me. They usually don't pick someone with no fighting experience, but that's what happened. So, after I got picked, I had to figure it out real quick. I didn't know what was happening to me at first, so I wasted a lot of time thinking I was going crazy. Turns out, I ain't insane...at least not yet, anyway."

Yod nods, satisfied with his answer. He then asks, "Dwarves usually ain't so trusting of outsiders. How did you convince Torbera to teach you? We can be stubborn."  He grins at the halfling.

Sassamona listens to Sketvid and Balthoz go back and forth about trouble this and trouble that. "I don't understand either. Trouble is trouble, ain't it?" Then she notices the flashily dressed man at a nearby table. 'he looks like he'd know this.' "Hey, fancypants," she yells over to Omar, "don't trouble just mean trouble?"

She listens to Lidda's story; two parts in particular stand out to her: "Did she teach you how to turn into a bear? I bet that'd be pretty cool to be able to do. Plus you could eat whatever bears eat. What do bears eat, anyway? Oh, and what's there to learn out on the Savage Frontier?" Sassamona goes on to answer Lidda's question. "It's easy to find Nightstone, at least when it's not this gross weather out. You just go that way"—Sassamona points her finger vaguely northward—"up the road for a really long time until there's a fork, and you go right. If you hit Waterdeep you made a wrong turn."

"Thanks, Yod..." When Yod commends her bravery, Sassamona does not feel particularly pleased with herself. Instead, she thinks, 'They really could have just taken the scroll, couldn't they? especially with their superpowers and all. That was actually pretty reckless of me to go there all alone.' But the feeling of self-doubt passes when Yod describes how he is an Ancestral Guardian, and Sassamona can't help but imagine him as a security guard at a dwarven retirement home, 'but that can't be right.' She asks, "What's that mean to be an ancestral guardian? Like, what do you do?" 'It sounds like there's fighting involved.' Thinking more deeply about what he said, she continues, "It doesn't sound like you had much choice in your life even back when you were a mason. Is there something you dreamed of doing, like when you were a kid? I used to want to be a sailor myself."

Lidda listens to Yod speak of the ancestral guardianship, followed by Sassamona's thoughts.

"There's one piece of your story that I took notice of, Yod," she says, "You said the rune stones select the Ancestral Guardian? That sounds a lot more advanced than anything my mentor ever talked about runes being capable of. Is it possible that the rune stones are just tools; vehicles your ancestors use to guide you? If so... maybe you weren't chosen by accident, but because someone -- like your ancestors -- saw that you were worthy of the honor? More so than other available candidates?"

She takes a sip of the cider, enjoying the rush of warmth filling her.

"As for my mentor; I'm not sure how Torberra came to trust me. I just begged her to take me in. She asked me why I wanted so badly to learn from her, and I ... told the truth."

She does not want share the exact details. As much as she has come to enjoy Yod's and even Sassamona's company, she's not comfortable enough to speak to them -- or anyone else -- of her crippling weakness.

"It might not only be because of me. Of her former students, only one is still alive. Maybe she wanted to increase the chance of her legacy surviving."

She stares down at her cup.

"Three of them died north, in the Savage Frontier. Sent there for the same reason as me. To seek knowledge and experience from the people that first adopted the runes from the giants. I don't know exactly what did them in, so Torberra asked me to keep an eye open for hints of their demise. And to be wary of giants. I hope that answers your question, Sassamona."

Lidda is not particuarly bothered by the topic. While it is sad that her fellow students met their end, she has never met any of them. It bothers her a tiny bit more that the north is so dangerous, but not enough to discourage her.

"As for turning into a bear on any other animal; that's a goal of mine, but it has so far stayed out of reach. Torberra said I would succeed in time, I just need more experience to connect my body and soul to the runes. So... here's to hoping she is right."

She raises her cup again and takes a sip.

"By the way, can I ask why you wanted to become a sailor, and what caused you to change your mind?"

Hey, fancypants," she yells over to Omar, "don't trouble just mean trouble?"

Omar looks down at his pants looking up at Sassamona and answered with a smile "These pants are fancy indeed dear Lady, but I'm more commonly called Omar Baldul (he pronounces it with emphasis on the dul part) . But for your question? This is indeed a deeply philosophical problem. There is trouble at hand, which certainly is different from borrowed trouble or again different from trouble to come. There are events that trouble the soul and should be avoided, then there is trouble which is in our power to be rectified, which we must do. So no I think there are to many forms of trouble to say it is just one thing."

He stands up and step over to Sassamona and Liddy bowing from the waist "I'm very sorry if my answer didn't help in your debate, but please consider that I'm a stranger here, and in my homeland we might have a different understanding what is meant by trouble than in these lands. Please help me understanding what the trouble is you are talking about. I'm a lonely traveler on my way to Nightstone, and being forewarned is being forearmed."
