“My words,” Yod said. | ‘My thoughts,’  Yod thought. | My actions . . .

Yod is a bit surprised in all the interest in Mirabar customs, but its not like it's a complete secret. Of course, they don't always advertise how they make the sausage...sometimes it's just good to know that the sausage tastes good. Still, he at least is planning to spend another day with these folks heading towards Nightstone... He first answers Sassamona's question, "An Ancestral Guardian learns from the clan's past warriors and uses that knowledge to defend the clan. It's been a long standing tradition in Mirabar. Usually, when one gets called, it's an honor and it's usually an established warrior. They can call upon the lessons or the dwarves that went before me to protect those around him. In a way, I'm support to protect the dwarven way of life."

He shrugs and says, "I ain't got it all figured out yet. It does help me fight, but the protection thing is still brewing in my whisky barrel."

Yod furrows his brow at Sassamona's last question. He thinks a moment, laughs, and says, "Honestly, I don't know what the hells I would do if I wasn't working stone. It's just a thing. My father did it. My grandfather worked stone...and my great-grandfather. We ain't all swinging a hammer, though. My brother...he's all about selling the stuff and he's real good at it. So in truth, I can't think of anything I would rather do. I don't know nothing else."

As Lidda asks him about the ritual, he rubs his hand through his beard thoughtfully...like there are answers hidden in it somewhere. After gathering his thoughts, he tells the halfling, "It's a bit hard to describe. There are these pillars of different shapes and sizes. The runes are mounted on these pillars. But it ain't quite that simple and there's an order to setting it up and the runes have to put attached in a certain way. I've thought a lot of about iffing I was chosen by accident or not. I don't know I've decided. But I'm not in a hurry to find out."

@morgan_ I wish you would have said that line about the security guard for an old folks home aloud. 🤣🤣 That's kind of right!

Yuan-Ti Life Cleric

IC

"It is to answer a question of faith." Responds Zhasi the warrior's question. "Which for a priest like myself, is one of the most important questions to have answered." He smiles at her. "As you know, there are wars among gods, much like there are wars among people. When these wars happen, the gods will make vast changes. Without going deep in the story, when my god fought his foe, he sacrificed much of his godly power, weakening himself so much that he ended up on the mortal plane. In the end, he was victorious and made several large sweeping changes before he transcended again."

"Re-Horakhty, in our dogma, believed in caste positions, and that you would be blessed if you were to support your place in the caste. There was the ability to shift your caste, but if you were a priest, you did priest actions. Noble, noble actions. Warrior, warrior actions, and so on. When he came down, however, he dissolved our slave caste and despite being a noble and not a warrior deity, fought tooth and nail among our warriors. As a clergy, we're split." Zhasi takes a moment to eat some of his food and take a drink.

After swallowing he continues. "Some believe that since he made no actions towards us, we were doing the right thing and should keep the course. Others believe that we should emulate the actions of our god and get involved in ways that we once ignored. Since Re-Horakhty is still recovering and none of our people can request confirmation directly, I have been sent on a quest to go forth and be among the people and act as I believe our priesthood should. If I am rewarded with a blessed artifact of our god, there is proof that my idea holds merit and we should focus on ways to steadily change to Re-Horakhty's new ideals. If I should fail and surrender, I am to return as proof that we are to follow the path already laid out." He eats a bit more. Before finishing his little story. "Due to our beliefs, I've been given a total of 9 years to accomplish this task."

 image.jpeg.2fb8ceec3ed0ac9ec8ae9b48212a990b.jpegTempest the Harengon

Outlander Hexblade Warlock

"You'd be surprised what Rabbits are capable of."

Tempest gives both Sassamona and Yod the same answer, her voice taking on an edge as she finishes off her meal.

"But truthfully, I learned everything I know of the order from Sir Acheron. At times we partnered with other Knights but I was still just a squire back then and not really privy to much other than "we're heading north," or "We're not stopping at this town; the next town has the bugbear problem so we'll go over there" or such."

Yod's admission actually surprises her, the harengon giving the dwarf a more curious, but guarded, look.

"I'd say that makes two of us." she says without explanation, only to be finally caught off guard when Lidda asks for the simple matter of her name.

"...It's Tempest. And yes, I gave it to myself, mostly because nobody gave me anything else at the time. I haven't been to Nightstone either, but this is a large town, there's bound to be someone who knows the way or at least put up a great big post in the road that will point us in the right direction; it's how I've made it this far. The Order wasn't really in the habit of handing out expensive maps to young, low ranking knights like myself, after all."

As Garon mentions his own reasons for heading further north Duala only offers a small smile and a nod. As before with the "thawing" clothes, she doesn't press, doesn't make a comment, not even a look to make a point. For Qu she listens at first with curiosity and then with an intensity as he tells his story. As the story ends with a clear resolution there's a flash of annoyance, that turns to acceptance, and then humor.

It is Zhasi that makes her eyes glimmer.

"Thank you. All of you. This is what I'm speaking about. Zhasi, I truly want you to be successful. If you were a proselytizer, and if I didn't have my own god I give praise to, I could see myself following a faith that's changed for the better. This definitely calls for drink number three. A Knee-Cracker if you would!" She calls out her order. "Well then, that was my humble question. It wouldn't do for me to hold the reigns at the table. Before you know it, I'll be asking you to face your fears, or daring us all to do some good deed for another random patron."

She takes a deep breath through her nose and leans back as she takes her next drink. "Who here has a question? An idea? A story?"

The door to the Lady Luck Tavern opens, and a tall wood elf enters and seems careful to close the door without slamming it in frustration. She warms her hands and rubs her ears.

"Good Evening, Glenys. Just an almond brandy tonight."

Glenys nods as Andraste glides over to the bar counter, slumping over in defeat. She takes notice of the muscular Half-Orc chatting amongst the other folks. 'She would be a good partner in a fight...'

"Andraste, haven'ae seen ya in weeks," Glenys chides, "Did ya find anything in the Daggerford Library?"

She shakes her head in defeat, "I must have read every book in there twice, nothing in regards to Hill Giants living in the area, let alone one named Kulvarg. While I did manage to refresh my Jotunskye and Jotunhaug, I'm afraid that is all Daggerford could offer me."

"Yer leavin', then? Where will ya go from here?

"Ardeep Forest. I'm certain they won't take kindly to my kind in Nightstone, given what happened with Lord Drezlin, but who knows? Perhaps the Wood Elves in Ardeep may be inclined to assist their kin. I’ll be leaving in the morning"

As she broods over her brandy, she overhears a man's voice say:

23 hours ago, Shocker said:

"I'm very sorry if my answer didn't help in your debate, but please consider that I'm a stranger here, and in my homeland we might have a different understanding what is meant by trouble than in these lands. Please help me understanding what the trouble is you are talking about. I'm a lonely traveler on my way to Nightstone, and being forewarned is being forearmed."

'I could not agree more,' Andraste thought to herself. It had been months since a letter from her friend in The Order of the Gauntlet was placed in her hands. It contained a name of one of the Hill Giants who destroyed her life. She had made her way to Daggerford from The High Forest to learn more about them and their vulnerabilities, but it was her lack of knowledge that made her feel all the more unarmed.

She turned to the voice, it came from a man in what appeared to be an expensive purple coat with red lining. He spoke to a short, dirty looking human girl, and a shorter halfling with flowers that adorned her curly hair. "Excuse me, sir, do you not know of the Giant attacks that have happened recently? Perhaps this is the danger being spoken of."

Lidda turns to look at the black-haired man. She noticed him coming in earlier, but didn't pay much attention to him as there was so much going on at the same time. His clothes look strange to her, particularly considering the temperature outside. She's not very familiar with human fashion, but she has an inkling that these clothes are far from what commoners would wear. It paints him as either rich or someone that has spent coin specifically to impress others.

Regardless, he is well-spoken, and deserving of respect. "Good evening to you. I am Lidda Hilltopple." She gives a bow.

"Your name was Omar? I'm afraid I didn't catch your last name."

"As for your question about trouble... I'm a newcomer to these lands, but these two are more familiar with the area," she says and motions towards the dwarf, Yod, and the girl, Sassamona. "We've spoken of goblins earlier. It's possible you may run into some, particularly if you're headed for Nightstone. I'm on my way there for that exact reason; they have requested assistance from volunteers. If you're worried about the trip, there are plenty of us headed to Nigthstone, so you needn't travel alone unless you want to."

She listens to the dwarf describe his family and his work.

"A question, Yod? When you say that you work stone, do you mean as a stonemason? It could also be used to describe the work of an architect, a constructor building from stone or even an artist. Which would better describe you?"

Yod's description of the rune stones doesn't provide any details she can lash onto with her own knowledge. The order of the runes inscribed is obviously important, just like the order in which sentences are formed from words. The description of 'attached in a certain way' confuses her. Is he intentionally vague because secrets are involved, or perhaps just bad at explaining? She wants to ask more, but it may come across as nagging. Perhaps she ought to temper her curiosity and try the topic again later? Ideally she wants to sit down and compare her own runes to the ones from his rune stones.

"Tempest is quite the interesting name," she says to the Haregon, "I can make several interpretations from the word, but I'm not sure which you attach to them. It does sound like you may be someone to be wary of."

"I assume Sir Acheron is a part of the Order you speak of? May I ask which Order it is? If you've already mentioned it, please forgive my lack of attention."

The newest addition to their conversation is another elf, but this one looks significantly less crazy then the pillar-flipping woman. Lidda's interest is instantly perked when she mentions giants.

"Excuse me, lady? My name is Lidda Hilltopple, and I am very interested in hearing about the giant attacks you speak of. I was under the impression that giants lived much further to the north. As a recent arrival here, I'm afraid I know less than you about the recent news of giants."

"We may be able to advice you on other dangers here, such as goblins. Well, not me, the people more familiar with this area," she says and nods towards the others.

Human Sage Evocation Wizard

IC: “My words are straight and bold” Omar Baldul said. | ‘My thoughts might be a bit slanted’ Omar Baldul thought. | My actions are plain . . .

Omar acknowledges the Elven Ranger's arrival with a bow.

"Excuse me, sir, do you not know of the Giant attacks that have happened recently? Perhaps this is the danger being spoken of."

"I have heard of those indeed, they are one of the reasons I'm travelling to the north, in hope to bring aid to the people there. I'm a journeyman, travelling to new places for the gathering of new information and learning in hope to achieve the status of Master Wizard to the Collegio Magica."

"Considering the amount of lore kept at the Collegio, the task to find something new is indeed daunting"

Omar reintroduces himself to Lidda "Most pleased to make your acquaintance Lidda Hilltopple, my name is Baldul, Omar Baldul. I know it's a bit hard on some tongues, so please call me Omar if it pleases you."

Omar considers her words, both those spoken to him as well as the others, Lidda seems to be knowledgeable in many areas. "So goblins were a problem here as well, how interersting"

"Indeed, it is much safer and fortuitous to travel in company than to wander alone. It's not just the shared burden but the shared stories I cherish. I'd be very glad to be accepted in your company."

He finally turned to the Dwarf

"Forgive my bad manners Master Dwarf in not properly greeting you before, are you also traveling to Nightstone?"

"another one of those strong fighters, the problems in the north are attracting valiant heroes. The situation must be dire." he thinks evaluating Yod's appearance.

Garon listens to the tortle's story initially disappointed that the protagonist was not a tortle. Then, he understands at the end that the elf lived his whole life before he tasted the sweetest experience but wonders if the elf lived even longer. 'Or, was that part of the joke?' He didn't voice his confusion and just nods and smiles at the interesting story, before taking a sip from his silver cup.

He then listens to the reptilian's story, interesting because it describs his own people and culture which are very different. Garon wonders if Zhasi is luckier to have been sent on his quest. 'On one hand, he has motivation to travel and behave as he believes his god wants him to behave. On the other hand, how would even know if he succeeds? And, how does he feel to be effectively exiled from his friends and family during the duration?' The personal story leaves him pensive.

Duala breaks him away from his introspection. After longer sip from his cup for courage, he offers, "I have a story, such as it is. For the other table's interest in giants, there are some giants in it."

"Six years ago, in the fall of the Year of the Awakened Sleepers, minions of the drow priestess Quenthel Baenre incited the frost giants of the Shining White and two white dragons, Arauthator and Aurbangras, to ally with the orcs of the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, where the warmonger Hartusk had recently gained the power. This large army of orcs and drow, supported by frost giants and those white dragons, assaulted the Silver Marches, north of here in what has become known as the War of the Silver Marches."

"Nesmé, a small town on the northwest border of the Evermoors, was the first destroyed by an orc horde led by the drow Tiago Baenre riding the white dragon Arauthator, and then Sundabar was conquered by an orc army commanded by the warlord Hartusk and renamed Hartusk Keep. The army then besieged all the dwarfholds in the area, Citadel Adbar, Citadel Felbarr, and Mithril Hall, and later also Silverymoon, too."

"The next year, in the spring of the Year of the Iron Dwarf's Vengeance, the dwarven forces united to retake the River Surbrin bridge from the forces of Many-Arrows. In the sky above the battle, heroes riding the copper dragons Ilnezhara and Tazmikella confronted Tiago Baenre and another villain riding the white dragons Arauthator and Aurbangras killing Aurbangras and forcing Arauthator to retreat."

"In the summer of that year, heroes of the Silver Marches pushed the advantage and conquered Dark Arrow Keep forcing the surviving orcs and frost giants to retreat, effectively ending the war. Many heroes died during the war restoring peace to the Silver Marches." Garon looks like he was personally affected by the war, but it's clear that he was too young to be there. He takes another sip from his cup to hide any emotion.

"Oh, thanks..." Sassamona frowns at Omar. She gets the strong impression that he is disagreeing with her about the true meaning of "trouble," but his conduct is so impeccable, his argument so well-reasoned, that she has no window to vent her frustration. A moment of self-deceptive rationalization reveals the real truth: 'He called me "dear Lady," like I'm some Noble—shows how much he knows.' Satisfied that she was correct after all, she feels comfortable telling him, "The name's Sassamona; my forearms are the best in the business." She mimics striking someone with her forearm. "What's this 'collego magic-ah' thing?"

Yod's explanation of Ancestral Guardian really appeals to Sassamona. "So you get to be the one to protect your clan? And you got all those old people to teach you to fight, too? That sounds pretty great to me, at least, if you're happy doin' it. Does it even matter if it was on accident?"

'Being ordered around like that, it's not so different from my life...' Sassamona listens to Tempest's explanation. When the rabbit mentions not being given a map, Sassamona, desperate to project her own importance to this knight, immediately cries, "I have a map!" She reaches down into her bag, only to find her map missing. 'Right, I lent it to that guy, and it's not even of Nightstone. Gotta be cool...' She sits back up straight, avoiding eye contact with Tempest. "Uh, probably you don't need a map to get to Nightstone."

When Andraste mentions giant attacks, Sassamona says to her, "You know about that, too?" She points at Tempest. "This lady's a giant hunter—part of a whole club and everything. I guess giant attacks really are a problem."

"Dang. And you're still gonna go after your classmates all died? That's real dedication." Sassamona raises her cup to toast with Lidda. "Here's hopin' it pays off."

She goes on to answer Lidda's question about her childhood dream. "Ha! I wanted to be a sailor until the moment I stepped onto a ship. My pa's a sailor; he used to make it sound great: 'See the world; bring people what they need; all your meals are free;' that sort of thing. So when I was thirteen, I tried out bein' a cabin girl on a merchant ship, and it was awful! First of all, you barely see anything 'cept water, and the food ain't that great. Plus you gotta live in this tiny room, and you can't even quit 'til you're back at port." She sighs. "I like what I do now, though," she says about being a caravan guard, "because it's basically the same thing but way better and on land."

"I am very eager to hear about the giant attacks," Lidda says, her interest obvious, "Can you tell me what you've heard?"

She wants to find out if these are unfounded rumors or not. If they are true and the giants have moved further south: What does it mean for her? Maybe not all that much. If these are solitary creature or even warbands, she shouldn't expect them to carry a lot of runes with them. But she can always hope.

"Er... It's not 'my' or 'our' company," she clarifies, "We just met. But considering the temperature and possible dangers, there are good arguments for sticking together."

Travelling with one or perhaps two others risk inviting a different type of danger, but a whole group? That offers some protection. Both from within and outside.

"They're not my classmates; they were my mentor's former students. The first one died her more than two hundred years ago, and the most recent one fifty years ago, so the chances of finding anything new are slim. I think Torberra has come to peace with their deaths, mostly."

She listens as Sassamona speaks of her experience at sea. Despite the first impression, she finds herself growing fond of the girl. She sounds like she has some violent tendencies, but doesn't seem like someone who will beat up her friends without good reason. Which is more than she could say about her brothers. They were beating up family rather than friends, but still.

Human Giant Foundling Rune Knight Fighter

IC: “My words,” Thordin said. | ‘My thoughts,’ Thordin thought. | My actions . . .

“Tik dritt!” Thordin cursed in giantish as he rubbed his head. This was third time this day he had hit it on a low-hanging threshold or a rafter. Short folk and their low architecture were the bane of his existence.

The assortment of different drinks were almost overwhelming to him. The only real drink he everhad before coming here was fjellengel. So he ordered, “Whichever of these brews is the strongest, give me a pint of it.”

When he took a swig of the drink that she poured him, he frowned. “Make it two pints, I don’t see how anyone can get drunk on this…”

So he downs two whole pints, in front of a now astonished Glenys and the gawking patrons around her. Mug in one hand, his polearm leaning on him, he hardly seemed affected by the spirits.

“Lemon? What is this…lemon?” He sounded out the unfamiliar word. Instead of explaining, the proprietress shows him the fruit. He snatches it and takes a bite, rind and all. “Hmm-…sour…I like it. But it would taste better peeled. Still, I need kjott-…meat I mean. Give me some along with more of these…lemons…and another pint of this brew!”

Andraste turns to the Halfling, "Well met, Lidda. I am Andraste. My surname is quite long in Elvish, but when translated it is 'Moonshadow'."

The High Forest is vast and shelters many creatures, and we had heard rumors of Fire Giants living in The Star Mounts, but a Wood Elf can go their whole life without seeing one; we prefer to keep to ourselves, you see. When one believes they are safe, they become...complacent."

Andraste swirls the brandy in her cup, as if searching for some deep cavern at the bottom of the glass wherein she could hide her guilt. "I...was not nearby when my home...my family...was taken from me, but I intend to ensure that no one else loses their home like I did. The most recent attack I've heard since was somewhere between Flint Rock and Longsaddle, so it is possible they are moving. Where? I do not know." She turns to the Harengon whom she believed to be called Tempest, "Do you know anything about the Giants' movements? Or about one named Kulvarg?"

Sketvid shakes his head in frustration, “No, no. You are not understanding! I do not mean past battles, I mean great trouble that is coming. Have you heard anything like that? It is important to me if you do.”

"I'm no prophet, sad to say. If I knew what was bringing the troubles, I would be able to do something about them - stop them, avoid them, put them to my use... but I'm just as tossed about by these things as anyone. Maybe moreso."

Then, gesturing to the more enlightened discussion nearby, Thoz adds

"Maybe one of these religious types has heard something from fate? The elements obscure a lot, but it couldn't hurt to ask."

He knew that wasn't the truth for every faith, asking anything of his Gods might just bring their attention to you - never a good thing. But the powers the other races follow had always seemed so soft to him. Surely they would coddle and protect their chosen ones, tell them how to make everything better.

"A question, Yod? When you say that you work stone, do you mean as a stonemason? It could also be used to describe the work of an architect, a constructor building from stone or even an artist. Which would better describe you?"

Yod laughs, a big belly laugh at Lidda's question and says, "It's more buildings and mines than anything. I know a lot about stone, the different types of stone, and what works best. And how not to dig and have a tunnel collapse on your noggin. My father was good at carving, but I never had a talent for it. I have big hands and no talent for it. I can turn a lump of stone into something you'd recognize, but I could never get the fine details."

Yod's explanation of Ancestral Guardian really appeals to Sassamona. "So you get to be the one to protect your clan? And you got all those old people to teach you to fight, too? That sounds pretty great to me, at least, if you're happy doin' it. Does it even matter if it was on accident?"

Nodding to the human girl, the dwarf acknowledges the truth of it. He says, "You got the right of it. It didn't start that way, but that's where I'm at. It took me a couple of years to even accept the mantle, and it's been a bunch of training ever since. They have a lot of expectations for someone who get named as someone important and I'm a little behind where I should be. Maybe there's a plan, though."  The dwarf shrugs, unknowingly.

He looks to the dark-haired stranger and shrugs off his apology. He says, "Ain't nothing to get upset about. Lots of people in Daggerford and I'm easy to miss. Yep, I'm heading to Nightstone Inn. There's a fellow there that I'm told I need to chat with. Never met him before though, so it outta be interesting."

spacer.pngThordin Galorspyd

Human Giant Foundling Rune Knight Fighter

IC: “My words,” Thordin said. | ‘My thoughts,’ Thordin thought. | My actions . . .

“My…my, I’ve never seen a human with such a large appetite,” said Glenys.

Thordin only grunts as he strips the meat from the bone. Truth be told, he had never tasted such flavor. The most advanced form of cooking the tribe had was simply roasting meat on a spit. Spices? Seasoning? He did no know if the Jotunen even had a word for that.

A pity the same could not be said for the drink. “The food is good, the drink is weak. I’m not even dizzy yet.”

At that, Glenys frowns, “Well then we can give you something even stronger, but it might be too expensive for your tab.”

“Tab?”

“Silver, copper, gold?”

“Oh, right…mynt,” Thordin fishes out his pouch of gold and plops it on the table. A blank Glenys stares at what could be king’s ransom in the Savage Frontier.

“Do you…do you have any sense at all?”

Thordin stops mid chew and looks the proprietress in the eye. “I can still taste, smell, touch, see, and hear just fine. That’s why I’m asking for a stronger drink.”

“That’s not what I…” Glenys trails off and decides to take a more blunt approach. “People see a pouch full of gold on you, they see a target to steal or take off your corpse, even in this part of the world!”

The warrior simply shrugs, “If anyone wants to try, they’re free to risk my spyd. In the All-Father’s eyes: only the weak and the cowardly hide their good fortune for fear of losing it to someone better.”
