The Android was discovered by Khonnir Baine on one of his many expeditions into the caverns beneath Numeria.  She followed him out of the tunnels and more or less imprinted upon him, becoming his adopted child.  After a period of assimilating human culture, she became fascinated by gambling.  She realized there was a beauty in the randomness of chaos, that there were underlying patterns to everything.  She took the phrase "Take a Chance" as a personal motto, chose the name Domino for herself and has indulged her curiosity and fascination with gambling ever since.

Some Thoughts on Background

Tag Wiz & Iantruesilver

My original thoughts for Domino run something like this:  She is discovered by Khonnir Baine and brought home and spends some time being essentially a robot before developing a personality with the help of Val.  After being introduced to the tavern and falling in with a 'bad crowd', Domino enters a rebellious phase and runs off for a time, only returning when guilt sets in over Khonnir's vanishing.  I really haven't had to go too into depth over the family dynamics and the previous setup was that we had all heard about Khonnir disappearing.  Now that situation is changed and there is a PC involved.

I never needed to really concern myself with how old Domino was before, but it will impact the relationship with Val.  My thoughts are that Domino is essentially Seven Years Sapient.  Khonnir brought her out of the ruins seven years ago.  She had her rebellion two years ago and has been gone since then with only occasional visits as she passes through town on her way someplace else.  Or maybe not even that.

Building the family dynamic should involve Wiz in some part, so this is my thoughts with the hope it sounds like a good plot hook/family connection and we can see how it develops.

Domino is found and brought in by Khonnir, that is the same and she spends time being little more than an automaton for a period.  This is where I need input from Wiz because it sort of depends on how old Val might be and what sort of personality Val has.  I was thinking a full year during which Domino did not have a name and responded to commands from Khonnir and Val like a robot.  Depending on Val's age this could lead to any sort of mischief.  Maybe Val had Domino do all her chores and treated her like a servant.  Maybe she treated Domino more like a pet or like a big doll to play with.  Maybe she got in trouble with her father for taking Domino out and making her do stupid pet tricks for the town.

Gradually Domino begins to develop a sort of basic personality, or at least curiosity.  This could cause friction in that Domino has no sense of personal space or privacy and might follow Val around, interrupt her with her friends, and do stupid/embarrassing things like play in the mud or laugh inappropriately.  Again, a lot of this will depend on how old Val is.  You have her listed as 17, which means she is only ten or eleven during these periods.  How much fun is it to have a robot servant?  How embarrassing is it to a twelve year old if her robot friend forgets her pants when leaving the house unless Val reminds her?

And then three years ago, Domino (still without a real name) is introduced to the tavern in town and gambling.  Because of her interest in music, my idea was that Khonnir brought her around as a socialization exercise and then things went south when she discovered gambling.  But maybe Val was the one that snuck out at night and Domino followed.  Pesky, stupid robot always following people around and Val couldn't let her go back and tell Dad, so now she has to let the stupid robot tag along.  Eventually Khonnir finds out, most likely because Domino can't keep a secret very well and blabs about it.  Or, if nothing else, when she says she wants to be named Domino and starts betting on everything from will it rain tomorrow to which way will a bird fly if you throw a rock at it.....  Khonnir is going to figure things out.

For a year Domino grows more rebellious and defiant about being told what she can and cannot do.  Eventually there is a huge argument with Khonnir and Domino storms out and vanishes.  She is gone for two years.

Which brings me around to the Drawbacks I am considering.  Family Ties is not really one of my favorite Drawbacks usually.  It is too easy to blow off or make work for the GM to use.  With another PC being part of the family, it could be a lot more interesting.  But it also could be something which becomes too easy to avoid.  If Val never asks Domino for anything significant, than it is not really a disadvantage.

Betrayed I sort of stumbled across while looking things over.  I don't remember seeing this one before, but it did spark an idea.  Domino fell in with bad people who amused themselves for a time and then sold her off to a Techno-Creep that wanted to dismantle her.  Or maybe set up gladiatorial fights.  I dunno, still working out the particulars.  Keeping it PG-13 here, so maybe some lascivious intent with a fade to black on details.  But a year or so of Domino's vanished time is as a prisoner and she gets to feeling very sorry for herself when no one comes to rescue her.  She comes back to town feeling very guilty (though she doesn't really understand what that is) and that is where things pick up again.  Domino comes looking for Val to find out if Khonnir is still mad at her for leaving.

The Android awoke in the tunnels beneath the Torch and sat. Unaware of, well, anything, she simply sat and processed the available data for a period of time. Possibly days, possibly months, she was unaware of the passage of time. Then she heard noises, the first audio information available to her, which caused her to turn her head. Khonnir Baine discovered her about the same time The Android realized she was capable of movement. It was quite fascinating.

She would have spent an hour simply watching her hand move and categorizing all the possible movements it was capable of. Khonnir Baine convinced her to try standing, which provided even greater input. She was capable of mobility! How curious! While she did not understand the concept, The Android was excited by the possibilities that mobility provided. She followed Khonnir Baine, who curtailed his current project and brought her back to his home, draping a cloak about her until he had time to explain modesty and cultural taboos.

For several months, The Android simply gathered information. She seemed to have no real will or purpose, wandered aimlessly and followed whatever might capture her attention. Khonnir Baine told her to observe and learn. She might watch a butterfly for an hour, follow a cat around the town, or stare at the patterns of light as it refracted through a fountain from sunrise to sunset. A curiosity at first, the town soon came to accept the strange behavior, Androids were not unknown after all. So, while sitting in the market place, The Android learned about human behavior and began to copy it.

The first sign The Android was becoming a person was her interest in music. Children singing, mothers humming a tune as they spun or stitched, the songs of birds. These things seemed to have a deeper meaning to humans than The Android was grasping. Banging on pots and pans became her primary function for a few weeks as she worked out percussion instruments. The Android calculated the patterns in music and found them enjoyable. She tried to make her own 'music' but it really sounded like several species of small, furry, creatures, grooving in a cave with a Pict.

In an attempt to help The Android grasp things like melody and lyrics, Val Baine took her to a pub, things did not go quite as planned. The Android became absorbed by the concept of gambling. Letting a roll of the dice decide things like who should have the most money. Other forms of gambling, such as cards, did not gather much of her interest and neither did pure strategy games like chess. But games that combined strategy and chance, such as dominoes and backgammon, really fascinated her and she became obsessed with them.

Hanging out in bars and gambling halls also opened up her previously blank personality. One of the gamblers took to calling her Domino and she decided she liked it. Domino entered what might be called a 'rebellious phase' and defied her adopted father, Khonnir Baine, by taking up with a bad crowd. However, his sudden disappearance has called her back with a disturbing feeling that humans might call chagrin. She has hurt her adopted sister and only real friend by her disregard for their father's rules and now Domino must redeem herself.

So it is with no small amount of trepidation that Domino returns home, skulking into the Copper Coin and wondering what sort of greeting she might expect from her sister.

Probably won't be able to keep this sort of formatting.  Editing things under OOC tags is annoyingly tedious.

I'd be fine if Khonnir had discovered Domino from a different ruin than Black Hill Caves, as there would not have been any motive for Khonnir to have explored there until shortly after this current campaign begins.

If any knowledge of Khonnir's disappearance, or even to the extinguishing of Torch's purple flame is to be used as justification for Domino to return to town, then that's fine, but I will be separating her from the remainder of the party at the very beginning of the campaign, perhaps for an encounter or few.

Where Domino is found is not important to me, only that Khonnir brought her back and more or less adopted her.

Being separate from the rest of the group.  If it works well for you, then fine.  I am perfectly capable of entertaining myself in posting.  I can get a bit wordy when left to my own devices.  But I do not know how well the privacy tags work, or how unwieldy it all becomes.  In the long run, it doesn't really need to be that way.  Domino is coming back because she feels guilty about being gone and is sad that she got betrayed by fake friends and embarrassed that 'Dad' was right all along and she should have listened to him.  From my point of view, it works just as well if Domino goes looking for Val first to find out if Khonnir is mad, has disowned her and they discover together that Khonnir is missing.

Short form, if it works really well as a plot hook for Domino to already be looking for Khonnir then I am all for it.  But it is not necessary for my background.

Cool.  Either way works for me.  Privacy tags now work I believe.  I'm seeing new things on the WYSIWYG editor.  For example...

That said, failing privacy tags (which aren't my favorite things to use anyway, as I prefer to trust my players with meta knowledge and to respect the fourth wall), spoilers.  I like them.
