Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 3: The Darkness Revealed

Since the eclipse lifted, the sun has blazed as brightly as it ever did, as though trying to make up for lost time. Unfortunately, no matter how much the sun shines, the looming castle ahead sends chills down your spine. There is something unnatural here, even more so than the drow themselves. You can count maybe ten figures manning the walls from this direction alone—how
many of them are there? How many people have they kidnapped, destined for slavery—or worse?

You’ve stopped for now at a small chapel to FlaesurosFlaesuros
Titles Brightest, Light of Life, Morning Star, The Never Shadowed
Home The Sun
Symbol A five-pointed star with a ring wrapped around the center
Alignment LG
Portfolio: Honesty, Life, Light, Youth
Domains: Good, Healing, Knowledge, Law, Sun
Favored Weapon: Morningstar

Flaesuros (FLAY sur oss) is blindingly beautiful, with very pale skin, shoulder length, curly light brown hair, and eyes the color of jade. He is short and broad-shouldered and generally has a blissful expression. He usually wears scant clothing, dyed red-orange.

Unlike other deities of the sun, Flaesuros is an easy-going kind of god. He places more emphasis on doing good for others and the community, as opposed to oppressing people with laws. He does, however, understand and teach that laws are important and that all good people should follow them, until such time as they interfere with the good of the land.

He is often worshipped by women, as he is the God of Life. His large numbers of followers can be primarily distinguished by an ashes star worn on the back of the right hand. There are widespread temples to him on islands. There are many myths involving his daring adventures with certain mortals. He is the father of Nearru.
on the hillside approaching the castle proper. From the exterior it looked abandoned, the drow obviously unwilling to breach a temple dedicated to light, but inside you see some signs of recent habitation: the remains of a small cooking fire and a corner swept free of leaves. Before you have time to investigate further, a woman drops from the rafters, a longsword glinting in her hands. “Alright, Vikmordere scum, let’s make this easy. You release your prisoners, and I let you live.”

Shayne Kuznetsov - Human Warlockhttps://i.pinimg.com/564x/6a/2c/62/6a2c6228b9f48aaad43fee12b6199eef.jpg

AC: 13 (leather) | HP: 20/24 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 13 (120ft Darkvision) | Spell Slots: 2nd 2/2 (+5, DC 13) | Healing Light: 2/4 | Hero Points: 2/3

Shayne had been keeping his sister apprised of the actual time, despite the fact they hadn't seen the sun in days. She hadn't believed him once, but as the darkness finally lifted into a grey haze and then to a fiercely shinning morning light, Shayne was more far too busy basking in the warmth to bask in his own vindication. He did make a mental note to gloat about it later, but for the moment, all that mattered was standing still and soaking up as much sunlight as he could. The moment didn't last long though, and soon the others had grumbled and groaned about moving on, and the group found themselves in the shadow of Adrik's Folly. Mops had always loved history, and while Shayne loathed to listen to stories about things that didn't pertain to heroes, adventures, and the occasional lewd joke, he could remember much of what she said clearly now.

At first Shayne was hesitant about entering the chapel. Not because he had anything against Flaesuros, but because every time they had gone into one recently it had ended poorly. Even before he had been forced to leave home, he could still vividly remember his last experience. Goodwoman Varinka had been deathly ill, but had never once missed a service. And that day the sermon ended abruptly when she expelled a belly full of borscht onto all of her neighbors in the pew. It was fortunate Shayne had been late and sat in the back, since his family had been sitting right behind Goodwoman Varinka. 'Bottomless Varinka' the boys had called the woman behind her back after that, since she had managed to put what seemed like an entire stewpot into her stomach. He snickered at the memory, remembering how mad Sabyne had been that Mops hadn't let them move afterward.

Distracted as he was, Shayne aimlessly followed the others into the chapel. And promptly tripped over a pew as the woman dropped from the rafters. Dust and dirt wafted onto the still morning air as he righted himself. When he had fully regained his composure, Shayne cleared his throat as though to speak, but simply whispered into his sister's ear a single, short remark. "Stab her Sabyne. Pretty Klavekian women don't drop from rafters and accuse you of being Vikmoredere after you've spent three days chasing captives through a barren black hellscape of a forest where everything wants to eat or kill you." He took another breath, turned his head as it brought on a coughing fit.  "It is too good to be true. She is just another Drow pretending to be Human. I'm giving you full permission to stab first and think never."  The male kuznetsov twin took a defiant stance, only slightly behind his sister.

"We're not even Vikmoredere you dolt. Not to mention, no one gives a warning when they are outnumbered. They just start shooting arrows at you from hidden locations. Ask Amber...she's insisted we fall into like half a dozen of those traps just recently. Not this time though...right?" Shayne turned to look at the Halfling, hoping his  fireloving bakesale companion would just shoot first and ask questions later.

 Sabyne Kuznetsov - Human Paladinspacer.png

AC: 17 | HP: 25/28 | Initiative: +0 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Slots: 1st 3/3 | Divine Sense: 3/3 | Lay on Hands: 15/15

She had shaken her warhammer when the light winked out.  Sabyne didn't know how Shayne's magic worked, but it was logical to believe it was as unreliable as he was.  His prowess in combat with it had proven as much.  Unfortunately, shaking the weapon did nothing to return the glow it once carried.  Frustrated, the female Kuznetsov stumbled back to the log enclosure she had created, tripping on someone's leg, before settling into a nook and falling into a slumber her body apparently required.

When she awoke, her sword now carried the bright guiding light her hammer once carried.  Sabyne's eyes narrowed at Shayne.  "You think you're sooo funny..."  Was all she said to him, or any of them, before she led them into the darkened forest once more, toward whatever foe waited for them next.

The paladin squinted as the light grew around them.  The haze carried the distant sun to hover around them, a stark contrast to the ebony that had swallowed them hours or days or however long her brother had insisted it had been.  Each step forward sunk into the muddy earth, but did not prevent the warrior woman from holding her sword firmly, prepared to attack any enemy that revealed themselves.

They approached the place of worship cautiously.  As her boot creaked on the wooden floor a woman fell from the rafters and her brother was quick to whisper into her ear.  Then shout out at their accuser.  "How dare you call me a Vikmordere.  I should cut you down where you stand, as has been suggested, for just the insult."  Sabyne's eyes scanned the space quickly, ensuring there were no other attackers within sight.  "Who are you, and how is there sunlight here?"  She took a step forward, providing her body as a shield for the rest of the party.  If this woman was going to attack, she would have to go for Sabyne first.

Fritz puts on the ring during the rest, not worried about a potential curse but instead thinking that if it will be helpful, we may need its help now. He feels a version of the fey armor that he sometimes uses cover his body.

As the darkness disappears and the sun rises, Fritz enjoys the heat on his face, and mostly the ability to see again past the nearest torchlight. It will be good to see any attackers before the arrows hit us. But his hope is short-lived when the woman jumps down form the rafters and surprises us.

"There's not a Vikmordere among us. And what prisoners are you talking about? We are looking for prisoners to rescue, not keeping them. So is this where Adrik Holmir was murdered?"

Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 3: The Darkness Revealed

The woman quickly lowered her blade realizing her mistake as her eyes cast upon each of the group that had entered. They were obviously not who she had thought they were.

"Who are you, and how is there sunlight here?" Sabyne asked.

The woman gave a nod as she responded "I am Alexandria Galekin. I hadn't expected anyone that was not a Vikmordere soldier come to do me in." she sheathed her blade before continuing "The eclipse, at least that is what I am guessing it was, has lifted."

"And what prisoners are you talking about?" Fritz interjected.

The woman then turned and looked at the little blue halfling and nodded her head to acknowledge him in a way someone of means would, the woman definitely was well versed in manners. She then sat on a pew to be more at the halflings level as she spoke "With the rise of banditry in the local area, my fool of a husband intended to hole us up in our country house, hiring some mercenary guards to protect our family until everything blew over. He himself went out looking for the bandits. The last I heard from him was two weeks ago. Once a mercenary myself ... it's how me and Kivan met." she blushed at the thought "I left the children with the nurse and set out to investigate." she explains.

"I figured out that my husband had been tricked by the local bandits, who eventually led him here as a prisoner. The Vikmordere scum is now hold up in Adrik's Folly." she said with a long sigh.

"So is this where Adrik Holmir was murdered?" Fritz asked.

"It is. Adrik’s Folly has stood sentinel over the land for generations and is locally known as one of the key steppingstones that allowed the Klavek Kingdom to finally wrest what is now Rybalka from Vikmordere control. Undermanned since its original purpose was served, the castle fell to the Vikmordere eight years ago." she continued to explain.

"Once conquered, the Vikmordere did not claim the castle for themselves, suspecting that the original soldiers would not rest quietly. They abandoned the fortress to the dead, and to the dead it had remained. Until recently when the bandit scum took over." she added.

"Can we address the heart of the matter? Whoever those 'bandits' are, they must be working with the Drow. Also, this woman is probably also a Drow is disguise! Is no one else suspicious that she comes out of nowhere just when we could use an ally, right next to the enemy fortress? Not that I want to be the cynic of the group, but by Arnut, someone has to." He turned and pointed to Alexandria. "You there, Galekin was it? How can you prove you're not just some Drow in disguise luring US into...ANOTHER trap?" As he accentuated the words, his gaze fell on 'little red' and then 'big red'. Clearly no one was going to prove the point, so Shayne stepped out from behind his sister and marched up to the woman. "There are plenty of spells that allow one to change their appearance with ease." He poked her, seeing if it would jar his senses into seeing through the illusion before quickly retreating a step. "Or...go out in the sun. I hear the Drow don't much care for that." He looked around, though no one else seemed to be in the least bit suspicious...This, must be what going insane felt like.

With two new crossbows hanging at his hips and a quiver of bolts, Zuma walks alongside the others. Their short rest to bandage themselves up, he had taken a nap by Amber's fire while the others did their research on the magical items, refreshing himself. When he awoke, he had a second wind and resumed the march with renewed purpose. Though he'd needed to pull his headdress down over his eyes when they wandered into the sun, squinting at the bright light - particularly where it flashed off of the snow.

Even so, Zuma was glad to see it again.

He grabs one of them when the woman drops down from the rafters, spinning around to scan the other rafters above them for more ambushers. When none emerge, he lowers the weapon to his side, but keeps it at the ready.

"Drow cannot hide a marching army," the small lizard says, in agreement with Shayne. "Must be in the castle." It's as likely an explanation as any. Reptilian eyes watch the woman with suspicion that mirrors Shayne's, trying to come up with some kind of test to prove her identity. None comes immediately to mind, for though brawn is not Zuma's greatest talent, nor is brain. But the inklings of an idea do bubble up in his mind. "Ask her questions only Klavek would know? Local, what is it, slang?"

Eve kept to herself after the battle and during the short rest after, her mind occupied with thoughts of their foe and riddled with questions after her midnight confrontation with Sabyne.  The cold and dark that surrounded them was in keeping with the frosty ire that swirled in her mind.  Wrapped in her cloak, grey eyes open, she huddled alone by choice, an invisible wall between herself and her companions.

She was quiet too when they continued their journey, avoiding walking too close to anyone lest they attempt conversation.  She needed time to consider what had gone before and what was to come.  When the sun broke through after the endless night, her heart lifted despite her self-imposed mandate of gloom.  It seemed as if the bright rays washed from her the air of bitter reticence that had surrounded her recently - the tension in her shoulders eased and her face reflected now an earnest passion without rancor.

So it was when they were accosted within the church she did not immediately shoot, though her bow was held at the ready. This woman seemed to her not at all the sort of threat the drow would have given them, and she almost smiled at Shayne's suggestions.  She kept silent for a time, but cleared her throat when Zuma spoke.

"Indeed," she said, thinking of her own masquerade among these people, "a Klavek will know a Klavek".

Shayne turned and pointed to Alexandria. "You there, Galekin was it? How can you prove you're not just some Drow in disguise luring US into...ANOTHER trap?"

The woman looked at the warlock, mouth slightly agape, eyes inflamed "What is a drow?" she asked in an angry tone as if you had just called her some kind of toad. When Shayne came up and poked her the woman slapped him hard across the face. "Control yourself boy! The dark wood has affected your judgement."

AC: 13 (16 Mage Armor) | HP: 20/20 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 10 | Spell Slots: 1st 1/4, 2nd: 1/3 | Sorcerery Points: 3/3

Fritz listens as the woman explains the tale of her lost husband. He is shocked by Shayne's quick outburst of distrust and glad to hear Zuma and Eve offer more reasonable alternatives. But he still thinks it's rude to not at least pretend we trust her.

"I apologize for my friend's behavior, ma'am. We have been attacked too many times these past two days and are a little on edge. We've been following some abducted prisoners ourselves. Maybe we could work together. Do you know how many Vikmordere are in the keep? Have you seen any patrols?"

 Sabyne Kuznetsov - Human Paladinspacer.png

AC: 17 | HP: 25/28 | Initiative: +0 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Slots: 1st 3/3 | Divine Sense: 3/3 | Lay on Hands: 15/15

Sabyne's eyes narrowed as the woman spoke, doubting her words, but her brow furrowed in confusion as her brother stepped forward poking at Alexandria.  She stifled a surprised laugh when she slapped him, which turned into a sour grimace as Eve commented from the back of the group.  After Fritz spoke, the paladin took a step forward and sheathed her sword.  "There are any number of things wrong with him, but the dark wood is not one of them.  The halfling speaks the truth, we have been attacked at almost every turn.  Those who have suggested friendship or polite negotiations, quickly changed their tactic to attempt to kill us."  She met the woman's eyes, holding them for a moment to size her up.  "I am Sabyne Kuznetsov of Three Sisters, Paladin of the Axiomatic General, loyal citizen to the King of Klavek.  We could use allies, those with like goals of our own.  But if you lay a hand on anyone who travels with me again, in particular the foolish boy, I will remove that hand from your body."  A pause in her speech where only the wind outside could be heard.  "Do we have an understanding?"

Her shoulders shifted, stretching her back, as she glanced around the church.  "It seems, by the way, that a drow is an elf.  One with darker skin, and darker purpose.  They are foul creatures that sleep below the ground and seem to climb out to feed on humans once a year."  This was the information as Sabyne understood it, and presented it as fact.

Amber Pyresoul - Halfling (lightfoot) Draconic Sorcererhttps://i.ibb.co/ccwt9Rt/Amber-small.jpg

AC: 16 | HP: 20/23 | Initiative: +3 | Passive Perception: 9 | Spell Slots: 1st 3/4 2nd 1/2 (+5, DC 13) | Sorcery Points: 3/3 | Hero Points: 2/3 | Concentration: None

The sudden appearance of an aggressive stranger had cause Amber to instinctually duck into a dark corner of the chapel. From there, the halfling listened quietly as the others spoke of their journey and the dangers they had faced so far. Though Shayne was correct in that they had stumbled into an inordinate amount of ambushes, this encounter appeared very untrap-like in its execution. If Alexandria did have nefarious designs, why wouldn't the woman just attack when she had the advantage? Or draw her dark elven allies to them? Or take one of them hostage? And why are Klavekan women so angry all the time?

Zuma's suggestion that they question the woman to discern the authenticity of her heritage seemed like a good one. However that line of questioning got interrupted by some not-undeserved roughhousing. Standing up straight to her full, un-impressive height, the halfling stepped out of the shadows and tried to lend some additional heft to Sabyne's words.

"And I am Amber. Just Amber. Of Fairglade. And whatever Sabyne said goes double for me. If you really are a Klavekan, then answer us this. Who is the.. uh.. where would you.." The halfling was forced to pause in her line of questioning while she floundered for facts about Klavek but none came to mind. "Um.. what was is your favorite pastry?"

 Zuma/Early Sprout - Kobold Ranger (Hunter)image.png.c5fa861dd6d78db515ea7449e59bc924.png

AC: 14(+1 vs melee slashing) | HP: 28/28 | Initiative: +0 | Passive Perception: 14 | Superiority Dice: 3/3 | Grovel: 1/1 | Hero Points: 3/3

Zuma lets out a low, throaty growl when the woman slaps Shayne. He doesn't feel the need to say anything more than Sabyne already had in the mage's defense - the growl had been unintentional as well, in truth. An automatic response of his body to his frame of mind, before he could rein it in.

This woman had not inspired much confidence in him thus far. "She jumps down alone to a large group. And slaps one of them." Sidling closer to Sabyne should the other Klavek woman decide to take offense to his words, he speaks to the paladin in a lower voice, "Can we trust her to make good choices if she works with us?"

Eve did not add her voice to those that bowled over poor Fritz's attempt at reason and threatened the woman.  If there was a trap here set by the drow it would have been sprung by now.  There might be danger related to this woman, but she felt confident that Alexandria had nothing to do with the evil elves they pursued.

The fact that Amber stepped forward and joined this foolishness surprised her - it seemed out of character for the normally trusting halfling, but her failed attempt at Klavek knowledge seemed quite like her.  The elf's brow furrowed as she regarded the slight sorceress.  Amber had asked her about learning the elvish language and Eve suddenly felt guilty for having avoided the request along with a strong compulsion to teach her.  Her heritage, so long hidden away, was bound together with both pride and shame.  Not that it was likely there would be much time, but she would try to find some.

Her fingers gripped loosely upon her bow and she let her body grow still within the grey cloak that hid her form.  If they were attacked she was ready, but there was no aggression in her bearing.  It seemed to her she was an outsider in this argument, though she could not say why.  Perhaps it was the way Sabyne lumped all elves together, as if the surface elves and the drow were one in the same, that seemed put a wall between Eve and the humans.  Or maybe in a way the paladin was right - in which case, this foolish quest to save the villagers was Eve's attempt to right the wrongs caused by her own people.

Shayne Kuznetsov - Human Warlockhttps://i.pinimg.com/564x/6a/2c/62/6a2c6228b9f48aaad43fee12b6199eef.jpg

AC: 13 (leather) | HP: 20/24 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 13 (120ft Darkvision) | Spell Slots: 2nd 2/2 (+5, DC 13) | Healing Light: 2/4 | Hero Points: 2/3

The attack was well within Shayne's expectations. Truthfully, it was the second most ideal situation, the first being that she simply revealed her true nature. Shayne squinted, as if trying to force his gaze to pierce through a stone wall. Nothing. That did unfortunately rule out most the magics he knew of that would transform person. The others, of course were more physical and permanent changes, but there was nothing he could do to reveal that.

While he commended himself silently for his subtle manipulation, he had never understood how women managed to slap so hard it left that lingering sting. Was this some ancient knowledge mothers passed on to their daughters in secret? He gently rubbed his reddened cheek, and fell back next to his sister. The combined efforts of Sabyne and Amber might have almost been intimidating and appreciated...If Amber's line of questioning hadn't fallen to baked goods. The rest of the group seemed unconvinced, and there was an strange tension in the air he hadn't expected. Even Zuma seemed like he had almost been ready to jump to Shayne's defense.

In either case, the slap had been less painful than being stabbed. Which he now knew from first hand experience. He didn't know how the rest of the group would handle the situation, but he did suspect it would fall to him, as usual to remain suspicious and vigilant for this woman's inevitable betrayal...

"You're incredibly rude for someone who jumped out of the rafters and threatened a group of strangers. And rather uninformed for someone staying in a run down church next to a fortress full of enemies they don't even understand..." He put a hand on his sister's shoulder, mostly to try and impede her from drawing a weapon, but also to let her know there had been no permanent damage. "How about we start over? We're here to rescue the people that got taken from Rybalka. And you're saying your husband was also taken? Or he was just tricked into joining the bandits? Or how about we start with where you live, to give us a bit of assurance YOU aren't the one making things up?" His cheek still hurt like hell. Shayne wouldn't be surprised if the man had just run off because his wife was abusive. Though she wasn't hard on the eyes. Would he put up with that kind of violence for the potential benefits? Most of him said...probably not.
