Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 3: The Darkness Revealed

As Shayne joined his sister in the chamber below and saw what she had they paused for a moment to allow Eve to join them, but before the elf could make her way down the rope, the stone of the broken sarcophagi moved as a group of ravished undead swarmed upon them, three of the four creatures were zombies, but one was different, one was armed, with a longsword in its grip and a longbow and quiver on its back. Studded leather also covered the armed undead who moved with an intelligence and purpose as it let the zombies rush to attack first.

The first zombie lashed out at Shayne, but the man was able to knock the withered arms away before they made impact.

The next one that was upon him he was not so lucky as he was overwhelmed by the flailing creature, as Shayne threw his hands up to protect his face his sisters warhammer came between them just in time to knock it away before it carved out a piece of her brother.

The protection of her brother had left her open from her flank as another of the creatures slammed hard into her side.

In the confusion and chaos, the intelligent undead moved in upon Shayne, seeing him as the weaker opponent. Using his sword with skill as he brought it down upon the sorcerer's shoulder causing him to cry out. Before anything else could happen, the creature grabbed a hold of Shayne's wounded arm and as he did so, it withered under his touch for a moment, turning gray and lifeless matching the creature's own before Shayne managed to pull it away and it began to return to its normal color. The arm felt ice cold and lifeless for a moment.

She had stepped to the side, expecting the elf to move past them, but instead the undead awoke, filing into the space she had just occupied, surrounding her brother.  Their hunger was terrifying in its efficiency.  "EVE!  GET YOUR BLOODY ASS DOWN HERE!"  Sabyne shouted as she looped a hand around Shayne's upper arm and pulled him backward.  "Why are you ALWAYS the target?" 

She remained where she stood, hoping the mindless warriors would focus on the closest target.  Her eye caught the sight of the creature behind the front line.  His stance was more fierce than the others.  Sabyne narrowed her eyes as she pointed her weapon at the ghostly figure.  "Your spirit shall be split from this world before I leave this tomb."  The paladin called forth the power of her god, marking the creature with a white rod across its chest.  There was no question in this, Axiomatic General was the deity that answered her call.

Shock gave way to pain as the undead rose from their graves to assault him and his sister. Pain lanced through his shoulder as blow after blow rained down on the unprepared Kuznetsov. He felt his vision leaving him, as though he were going to black out, and then felt Sabyne's grip on his collar drag him about. Shayne leaned against the wall, barely cogent as he tried to get his mind to focus. He could feel the damp earth of the wall against his back, but not down his arm. He stared at it for a long moment, blinking rapidly as he tried to come to terms with the withered husk that was his right arm. Closing his eyes, he offered up a prayer, knowing full well no one would answer it. Slowly he struggled to raise his hand, the muscles rebelling against his will. The color and shape began to return to normal, but the chill remained.
Focusing all the concentration he could muster, Shayne snapped his fingers and the darkness around the undead exploded into fiery light. The sphere of energy pulsed and throbbed almost as if it were quivering with anticipation as it bathed their enemies in flames. His fingers continued to dance as he wove another incantation, this one forming points of light along the sides of his wound before a strand of shadow cinched them tight. He let out a labored gasp as some, but not nearly all of the pain subsided.

Action: Cast Flaming SphereA 5-foot-diameter sphere of fire appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within range and lasts for the duration. Any creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw. The creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

As a bonus action, you can move the sphere up to 30 feet. If you ram the sphere into a creature, that creature must make the saving throw against the sphere's damage, and the sphere stops moving this turn.

When you move the sphere, you can direct it over barriers up to 5 feet tall and jump it across pits up to 10 feet wide. The sphere ignites flammable objects not being worn or carried, and it sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet.

Eve narrowed her eyes at Shayne's seeming coldness toward her - she had counted on him to be an ally in helping her to understand better his hot-tempered sister.  It was a difficult enough job as it was and she was perturbed by his change in attitude.  Before she could get close enough to join them, the pair had already descended into the darkness.  She hesitated a moment, looking back toward the church where the others had remained.  There might well be danger, and though the stone did not look to have been moved for a long while, she did not discount anything where the drow were involved.  Sounds from below caused her a brief moment of concern which Sabyne's unmistakable shout coalesced into both anger and action.

"Come quickly!" she called in her clear elven voice towards the group still in the church, "Combat has found us!"

That second part wasn't entirely true, as Sabyne had fairly well goaded this entire thing into action herself.  Even as she readied her bow and closed the gap to the opening in the ground she was looking for targets.  Her fear had been that the opening would block any hope of attacking from above but she was relieved to see she had ample angle for the tactic.  Kneeling at the edge of the opening, she breathed a short melodic verse in her native tongue before loosing a pair of arrows at what looked to be the nastiest of the clearly undead enemies.

Amber nodded at Zuma's suggestion to check out the monk quarters and hopped off her pew to join the kobold in heading up the stairs. "Sounds like a good idea. Maybe the monks left a map or some secret key or maybe a - " the halfling's musing were cutoff by the shouting of Eve in the graveyard outside. Even though the words were muffled due to the direction of the doorway, the urgency was clear.

 

"Oh dear, sounds like they've found trouble somehow. I swear, I wonder if those Kuznetsovs will ever learn to be careful." Turning towards the doorway, the sorceress proceeded to rush outdoors as fast as her childlike legs could carry her. As she reached the entranceway, Amber reached out to grab doorframe and let the momentum of her movement pivot her southwards towards where Eve's cries were coming from. Then, as she crested the corner of the abandoned church, Amber called out towards Eve trying to ascertain how much peril the group was facing. "What's wrong Eve? Is it drow? Or werewolves again? What kind of danger are we looking at? And where's Shayne and Sabs?" the halfling called out towards her elven companionThraxys: Ask the forest rat how many biscuits this battle warrants. That should make things clearer for everyone..

About to descend the stairs to the monks' quarters, Zuma is stopped in his tracks. Pupils narrowing at the shouts of warning from Eve, Zuma grabs his bow and dashes outside after Amber. He expects to find a raiding party of Vikmodere bandits, or a squad of drow assassins, peppering the twins with arrows. Instead he sees only the countryside.

Amber is already ahead of him and calling out to Eve to ask what's the matter. He pivots to follow her around the corner.

Sabyne quickly grabbed her brother and tucked him behind her as she declared her enmity toward the leader of the undead. A moment later in a fiery display the sphere of fiery energy formed in the space that his sister had pulled him from as Shayne began to weave his magic, both to happen his foes as well as heal his flesh.

Eve fired off a couple of quick arrows down toward the armed undead, her first arrow struck and while it did not penetrate as deep as she would have hoped, vines sprouted forth from the arrow and wrapped themselves tightly around the creature before driving themselves into the stone of the floor to hold it in place. She then called out for her allies inside the chapel.

The entangled wight did his best to order the undead to move away from the fire. Sabyne managed to hold the two zombies off that were on her, but one was moving past to get to her brother.

As the one slipped past Sabyne it lunged at Shayne, but the sorcerer kicked it away before it could hurt him further.

The leader of the group of undead broke free of the vines that held it and then rushed past Sabyne toward Shayne. Sabyne struck the creature in the back with her warhammer as it passed her.

Her fears found reality as the undead walked through flame to feast on her brother.  Sabyne's throat constricted in panic, unable to playfully taunt him as she normally would.  Instincts took over, protection and defense.  The paladin took Shayne by the arm again, swinging him backward away from those that would eat his flesh or suck away his soul.  Her midnight eyes glared at the marked leader.  "You will have to go through me, if you truly want him."

Sabyne pushed him through his own fire in order to safely get him to the rope.  She put the hemp cord in his hand and sternly looked him in the eyes.  "Climb."  Her voice echoed the sound of Mops, an order given through love.  And just as she would have, his sister's eyes softened at the edges a moment later.  "I'll be right behind you."  His hesitation was clear.  He didn't want to lose her just as much as she didn't want to lose him.  Regardless of their arguing, the lack of trust that seemed to have festered in the open wound of their relationship, they were still siblings, still best friends that would do anything for each other.  "Go.  With this armor on, you'll all have to help pull me up."  She hoped her attempt at convincing him would work.  Glancing back at the swarm that was coming her way she wasn't certain she would survive, but she was positive he wouldn't by the bruises and blood that covered him.

With a final effort, Sabyne grabbed Shayne by the hips and began lifting him up to help him ascend the rope.  "CLIMB!"

Fire bloomed in the close chamber, evidence of Shayne's magic alongside the thorny mass of her own enchantment.  Neither seemed capable of keeping the evil below at bay.  As the situation rapidly devolved into chaos, Eve fumed at the choices that had put them there.  Sabyne's efforts to keep her brother out of harm's way were certainly commendable but there was also the fact that it was her own actions that had put her brother at risk in the first place.

Peripherally, she was aware of the others as they streamed from the church and ran towards them but it was time wasted, and time in this situation was something they didn't have.  Drawing another arrow, she sighted down through the growing confusion in the chamber for a clear shot.  The twang of her bow was lost in the shout and clash of battle from below, and she prayed that the barbs of her arrow would speak the louder.

Dignity was something Shayne had been finding in short supply lately. It was embarrassing enough he'd been caught so unaware after his comment to Eve. He could only imagine what smarmy remark she would have if they survived this. But being dragged about by his sister like a life sized doll had truly demolished any semblance of self respect he had retained. The worst part of it, was that he'd been TRYING to resist her, but she'd tossed him about as casually as a hay bale. He half stumbled as his sister half dragged him back through the crypt toward the rope and gave him a shove.

He couldn't believe the words spewing forth from her mouth. After all of this madness, did she really think he would simply abandon her? Shayne opened his mouth to give her the most offensive string of curses he could think of in the moment, but as he looked about at the scene before him he realized (begrudgingly) she was right. It wasn't like they could climb the rope at the same time, and in truth, she had a much better chance to survive going afterward than he did.

Shayne looked at his sister with a scowl. "You're a god awful liar, you know that right?" Not wanting to waste any more precious seconds that she could use to get up the rope, Shayne started his ascent. He had climbed lots of ropes in his youth, but this was remarkably harder than he had remembered it to be. He had only made it about half way up the rope when he remembered his spell. A flick of his wrist and the ball of fire came rolling toward his sister. At the very least if they wanted to hit her, they were going to suffer for it. The male Kuznetsov twin almost lost his grip as he made the motion, but managed to use his legs to stabilize himself as he started to climb once more. When he finally reached the top, a sense of relieve washed over him and he scrambled into the grass. "Okay, hurry up!"

The confusion below made getting a clear shot difficult, compounded by the fact that she needed to avoid hitting one of the twins.  A cold fury went through her, heightened by the thrill of fear for her companions, as her shot missed its mark.  She cursed in elvish as Shayne made his way up the rope, reaching out to seize his shirt and help haul him up once he was close enough.

"Despise me if you must but don't get yourself or Sabyne killed to prove it. She needs someone to keep her out of trouble, not get her into it."

Fritz was settling in to the far end of the building and missed Eve's initial call for help. But when he hears Amber and Zuma start to leave, he jumps up and gathers his things. He fumbles around in his component pouch and pulls out a small pice of leather, causing a shimmering rainbow of color to briefly cover his body. The illumination disperses quickly, but its protection lasts.


"I'm coming."

Book 1: Shadows of the Underworld Chapter 3: The Darkness Revealed


Dragging her brother through his own flames, Sabyne managed to fend off the undead as she literally forced Shayne through the room and to the rope.... hoping beyond hope that he would climb it as soon as he reached it.

Eve could not see the creatures that had moved down the tunnel, but she could still see one of the undead in the main chamber, so she fired off another arrow into it.  The barbed tip tore through the undead's flesh as it passed through its rotten form, but it did not stop its movement.

Shayne repositioned the ball of fire next to his sister as he finished his climb up and out of the hole, acknowledging Eve as he stood next to her.

The undead leader skillfully ordered his zombies to move to the far wall and grab the woman that remained below, while he himself regathered his longbow to ready to fire at her. The mindless zombies tried to obey but the distance was just too far, and they were slow so they grabbed at her as soon as they could reach her.

Sabyne avoided the grasp of one of the creatures, but the two others managed to grab ahold of her or her armor to keep her from climbing. But the flames took their toll on them for being so close to it.

The wight fired off two arrows at Sabyne, one missing her entirely but the other penetrating her armor and into her leg.

DESCRIPTIONS

Flaming Sphere
A 5-foot-diameter sphere of fire appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within range and lasts for the duration. Any creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw. The creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

As a bonus action, you can move the sphere up to 30 feet. If you ram the sphere into a creature, that creature must make the saving throw against the sphere's damage, and the sphere stops moving this turn.

When you move the sphere, you can direct it over barriers up to 5 feet tall and jump it across pits up to 10 feet wide. The sphere ignites flammable objects not being worn or carried, and it sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet.

Grappled Condition

  • A grappled creature’s speed becomes 0, and it can’t benefit from any bonus to its speed.
  • The condition ends if the Grappler is incapacitated (see the condition).
  • The condition also ends if an Effect removes the grappled creature from the reach of the Grappler or Grappling Effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the Thunderwave spell.

Hit Point Maximum Reduced

Where's Sabyne? Fritz has forgiven her for that one time when she tried to kill him and would be severely disappointed if she died under those graves. Graves? This can't be good. He runs as fast as his short little legs will carry him. It's not very fast, but he knows he needs to get there as soon as he can.

He couldn't help but shake his head. "You know exactly what I needed right now Eve? A gods damned lecture." There was so much more he wanted to say, but the situation below demanded his full attention. He expression of frustration morphed into one of shock and horror as the zombies attempted not to hurt Sabyne, but simply keep her from escaping. There was a cunning to their choice of action that he hadn't expected. We're they supposed to be all but mindless creatures? With so many now holding on to his sister, it became apparent the odds of her making it up were becoming more slim by the moment. 

With a flick of his wrist, the sphere of fire hurled itself into one of the zombies, searing ancient and dried flesh. The Kuznetsov warlock hadn't even noticed as he focused his attention on one of the zombies below. Shayne held his left hand aloft, fist clenched as though wrapped around something invisible. He took a deep breath and with his right hand delicately pulled back from his left hand to his cheek. It was a motion Eve was very familiar with. As his hand retreated, an arrow made of pure sunlight hummed into existence. Energy crackled about the arrow and invisible bow as his arm started to shake. "I'm begging you Astranella, I need this to work." He released, the bolt crashing down into the burning zombie light a bolt of lightning. Even as it impacted, rays of light burst into motes surrounding the thing. "We need to kill the other one holding her so she can get up here. There is still something worse down there."
