APPEARANCE

Age 17 | Height 3' | Weight 30 lbs. | Hair Varies (Currently auburn) | Eyes Varies (Currently jade green) | Complexion Lightly Tanned with some freckles

Sitting with one leg crossed gracefully over the other, in the relative safety beneath her favorite oak tree in Gronzi Forest, Regan lazily appraises her reflection in the still pool in front of her. The young gnome is not a paragon of gnomish femininity, she knows, but she is attractive enough, she thinks, in her own way. Yes, altogether acceptable.

Her hair is wrapped up into a practical bun with occasional wisps rebelliously brushing onto her diamond-shaped face. Normally her long straight hair was raven-hued, but for her own amusement as well as the enjoyment of the rest of the children in the Medvyed family, she would cast a simple Prestidigitation cantrip to change its color. Golden, lavender, moss, silvery-white, rainbow… and currently auburn.

Regan’s hair neatly frames her doll-like features. Her skin is lightly tanned with a smattering of freckles on her nose and cheeks. The teenager very rarely wears heavy make-up, but the little she wears does suggest a bit of artifice on her part.

The forest gnome displays a youthful look yet her large, expressive jade green eyes suggest a wisdom beyond her 17 years in this world. Her small, pert nose seems sculpted. Her tiny mouth expresses a confidence and self-discipline that would overcome any obstacle that Fate could conjure up against her. Now the ears are a bit of a disappointment, though. While still pointed, they are not as sharply defined as she would have preferred. Thus, she normally hides them with her hair.

Regan next examines her tiny hands. Removing her gloves, she notes that they are shapely, delicate but dexterous. She is left-handed.

Uncoiling her legs, the spell caster then stands up -- 3’ tall and sporting a slim but trim frame that sports a mere 30 lbs. of youthful muscle. Hers is a dancer’s body.

Satisfied with the results of her self-appraisal, Regan summons Hugin the Raven, her familiar, from the towering oak to her outstretched hand. The ink-colored avian flaps its way obediently to its mistress, its raucous cawing both friendly and reassuring, echoing through the vast woodland around them. Noting the position of the sun shining high overhead through the interweaving maze of the branches, the wizardling turns eastward, starting her return back to Stoneclimb, the ancestral home of House Medvyed, before anyone there would miss her presence.

Before they leave the great tree, though, Regan looks back up towards a specific spot where some of the branches remain blackened and charred from a fire of some sort. A sad smile crosses her face briefly... and then she makes her way homeword.

BACKSTORY

The old hermit was deep in thought when he heard the cooing coming from the bay laurel bush next to him.

As was his custom, the wizard Archaeneus would take a morning constitutional in Gronzi Forest near where he resided. During this perambulation, the aged human’s nimble mind pondered many things wizardly – new spells, counter-spells, potions, scrolls, magical items – when first he noticed the unusual sounds. Curious, but readying his trusty staff just in case, he and his loyal familiar, Hugin, peeked over the shrubbery to find… a basket. And in the basket a tiny infant, probably gnomish if appearances weren’t deceptive.

How odd.

Throwing caution to the wind, he checked out the burbling child’s current haven. Buried beneath the blankets over her there was a stuffed unicorn (bedraggled but much beloved, it seemed) and a fragment of a beautiful tune written as musical notes on two rolled-up pieces of parchment. No lyrics, though. On the ragged toy, he found the word “Infundibulum” inscribed on one of its legs. That was it -- “Infundibulum”. There were no other clues or means of identification. Searching his memory, it didn’t sound like a typical gnomish clan name – certainly not anybody that he had ever heard of in that area of the forest. Still….

What was he to do? He had never had any children before. Certainly, he never had any desire to raise any. Yet, while the irascible hermit could never be described by anyone as kindly or paternal, something about the apparent orphan touched his heart that day. So, he decided to take the babe to Yggdrasill, his treehouse sanctum sanctorum, where he raised her himself. And she became his apprentice.

As for a name, “Infundibulum” seemed such an unwieldy surname, but it would work in gnomish society. However, for a given name he decided to call her “Regan” after someone he knew a long time ago. So, the child became “Regan Infundibulum”. And she grew up, learned many things, and enjoyed her time studying the ways of wizards.

About ten years later, on a rainy night in the forest, Regan discovered the dead body of Archaeneus in his chambers. No reason could be easily discerned by her. There didn’t seem to be any signs of foul play. She couldn’t find any specific mystical reason for his passing, but she understood that all living beings must die at some point. It was the way of nature, after all. So the next morning, as per her master’s wishes, she buried him by the pool next to the oak tree’s roots, whereupon a default spell cast by Archaeneus for just such a contingency burned the treehouse triggered by his passing. Taking her few belongings including her stuffed unicorn and the two sheets of musical manuscript, she then made her way out of Gronzi Forest to seek her destiny with faithful Hugin by her side.

The next day while on her long trek, she heard the cries of a youngster coming from a man-made pit. Holding her wand ready, she and Hugin peered over the edge and saw a human boy trapped below. He was about her age and a little older than she. He seemed to be dressed very nobly than your average peasant, although his garments were dirt-stained and somewhat torn. He seemed to be limping and in some pain. He introduced himself as Aron Mevyed, the second oldest son of Lord Gurev Medvyed.

Regan knew about Duma the Sly and his gang of bandits. She also knew something about their favored tactics such as the pit trap in front of her. Perhaps it was their intention to capture the boy and hold him for ransom; or perhaps not. In any event, while it would certainly teach the nobleman’s son an important lesson regarding exercising caution, she certainly didn’t want to see anything untoward to happen to him due to his stupidity. Besides, he was not altogether uncomely. So she helps him escape with her magicks and her advice, and they make their way back safely to Stormclimb, his ancestral home.

Lord Medvyed is so thrilled to have his son back, he adopts Regan as his legal ward and formally christens her Regan Infundibulum Yggdrasill, but Aron and his brothers and sisters call her "Lodestone" because she rarely gets lost.

[NOTE: While we're waiting for a final decision, I figured that I would flesh out that part of Regan's backstory where she meets Aron Medvyed.]

The next day while on her long trek, she heard the piteous cries of a youngster coming from a man-made pit. Holding her wand ready, she and Hugin peered over the edge and saw a human boy trapped deep below. He was about her age and a little taller than she. He seemed to be dressed very nobly, more so than your average peasant, although his garments were dirt-stained and somewhat torn. He also seemed to be limping and in some pain. He arrogantly introduced himself as Aron Mevyed, the second oldest son of Lord Gurev Medvyed. When asked by Regan why he fell into the pit, the boy started doing his best imitation of adult curses that he could think of under the circumstances and ordered her to help him out of his predicament immediately.

The gnome calmly pointed out that he was hardly in a position to make demands of a complete stranger and, unless he behaved himself, she was perfectly willing to let him rot in there. At this point the boy started crying and begged her to rescue him.

Regan considered the situation for a bit. She knew about Duma the Sly and his gang of bandits. She also knew something about their favored tactics such as the pit trap in front of her. Perhaps it was their intention to capture the boy and hold him for ransom, or perhaps not. In any event, while it would certainly teach the nobleman’s son an important lesson regarding exercising caution in the woods, she certainly didn’t want to see anything untoward happen to him due to his stupidity. Besides, he was not altogether uncomely… for a human.

So looking around the area, she espied a nearby pine tree to which she could tie the 50' of hempen rope that she took with her when she left Yggdrasill.  She then lowered herself down the 10’ hole. Regan then tied the other end of the rope to the waist of the nobleman’s son.  Next, she climbed back up the rope. She then untied the rope and then wrapped it once around the tree. With her makeshift pulley, she – with loyal Hugin in hawk form tugging on the rope with his mistress -- helped him out of the pit. Supporting the boy on one side, they slowly and methodically made their way back safely to Stormclimb, his ancestral home … despite frequent rest stops and constant bickering between the two over how to get to the stronghold.

Once they arrived at the fortress, the guards assisted the two of them inside. Lord Medvyed was so thrilled to have his son back, he adopted Regan that day as his legal ward and formally christened her “Regan Infundibulum Yggdrasill” after her mentor, but Aron and his brothers and sisters call her "Lodestone" to this day because she rarely if ever gets lost.
