Anya is a petite woman, but woe be it to the person who equates her size with her ability. When she has a goal, there are few who can stand in her way. What she can't achieve with fear, she acquires with charm and the knack for knowing who around her can aid her in those pursuits. She dresses simply. Her posture is ramrod straight. She meets every gaze unflinching. She radiates 'military.'

 

BACKGROUND

Anya was too direct for some of the subtleties of Surtovan actions, so she was sent to join the army. She came back smart and determined, but recalled her earlier lessons as well. (Soldier background with Surtovan features)

Background Feature: Military Rank You have a military rank from your career as a soldier. Soldiers loyal to your former military organization still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.

 


BACKSTORY

Anya stared across the square in front of the Brevoy Royal Palace. For weeks there had been rumors of a new plan by the king to send a force, albeit a small one, into the Stolen Lands. If rumors were to be believed, the mission would be to carve out a new seat of power in the wilderness.  Ever since she returned from the Fifth Crusade, she had been bored to tears with the timid games of political chess being played out between the Houses in Brevoy. Now this, this, was something she could sink her teeth into. She had been watching the front entrance for weeks. She knew the players, for the most part, or at least the individuals being considered for the mission. Now, which of you can help me make this a success?

Of course, they were heading into the wilds of the Stolen Lands. Someone capable of survival there would be useful. She looked at the scraps of paper scattered across the table. She sorted briefly, and came up with a handful of names. Isario Ferox Perhaps. Orchard? A fairy? Hmm.. Apparently well-known for getting around in the wilds. Anya put the scrap of paper with the fairy's name on it in a separate pile.

What do I know about the sorts of denizens we might encounter? I've seen reports of bandits for sure. So, someone who speaks that language. She turned her attention back to her notes. Her eyes immediately fell on one name. Teshkar Ashscale. She smiled. The kobold had served her family for years. Loyal to a fault. But were there other options? She selected another note. Cadoc Alwyn She pondered her notes. Ex-military, seems to be a good sort. So why resort to banditry? There's a story there for sure. With a sigh, she moved Teshkar's note to one side, and added Cadoc's to the pile with Orchard.

So how to keep us alive in a fight? She had seen several noteworthy warriors in the palace halls recently. House Garess had put forward a Dwarf named Doomvein. How much would he be working towards their ends? Perhaps include him to better keep an eye on hime? Keep your friends close? Okay. And another to hold the front line with Doomvein. She tapped her lip with a long, slender finger. Where was it? Ah. A note mentioned a stranger to Brevoy, a Dragonborn Barbarian named Dovas Kir. She had seen his gleaming scales from across the square. And as a stranger, he had no loyalties to any of the other Hosues. If he could maintain some discipline, he could do well.

At the thought of discipline, she sighed. She knew she needed some sort of arcanist, and the Surtovan elders would have someone in mind. But why, oh why, did it have to be cousin Nicolay? She shuddered as she remembered when he had 'goosed' her with his little magic hand, as she was being presented to a noted Rostan general. Suck it up, girl. We all gotta play the hand we're dealt. Yours is just likely to have a joker in it.
