FISHING CONTEST

 Information

Hosting my annual fishing contest on the first floor of the Tower. Winner"First Prize"

This particular treasure aspect can be invoked three times before it is consumed.
 takes all!

RoliaGuild Assistant
Friendly and Familiar Face
Seen All Sorts

You flash your badge to the guards outside the Tower and enter its first floor - silent stone catacombs dimly lit by everburning torches that give off no smoke or heat. This area is generally considered safe and used for regrouping, although smaller creatures do lurk in the shadowy corners.

Following the other contestants off the beaten path, you come to a cavernous cistern - its expanse shrouded in darkness, massive pillars rising to a vaulted ceiling. Water laps gently against the stone ledge - it's difficult to tell how deep it goes. A distant splash echoes through the area.

Assistant Rolia"Glad everyone could make it! Always nice to have a bit of friendly competition.

Let me explain the rules to our newcomers..." she says, before going into detail:

 Solo Fishing Minigame

This contest lasts for seven turns, and all contestants take their turns independently of each other.

Each turn fishers roll four Fate dice. Starting in the top-left corner, move one column right for each plus.png.1394eaec55f32c1b22bf8e82bcff795e.png and one row down for each minus.png.0db18de28280e81d702b682f95afecd8.png that turns up, then read the results for your fish below. You may spend invokes to reroll this fish.

You cannot do anything that would disturb or interfere with the other contestants. Catching a fish ends your turn. You can give up your turn against fish that require a test. Succeeding their test awards the points shown. Failing deals mental stress in shifts. You may withdraw from the contest before rolls and keep your score. You may keep your fish afterwards. Check with Rolia if you have questions.

Scene aspects are bolded.

Action & Results

Result :  Caught two Trouts (10 points), two conger (20 points), a Cod (2) and a Murena (10)

Luna came completely unprepared, with just a basic fishing pole and some bait, but nothing out of the ordinary, except maybe for the strange looking contraption that she is carrying on her back, that she unfolds into a quite complex chair. With this, she takes her spot, not far from the others, really more planning on making merry and catching some food rather than winning the competition

"And so we get to keep every fish we gather ? This is good ! With everything that we get, maybe we could even make it a small feast ! I look forward to eating some of the fishes that are in there."

And with this, she hooks some bait to the line - Despite her proper unbringing, she has no trouble talking the worm and stabbing it onto the hook - and throws it into the water, using just a little bit of illusion magic to hide the hook and the line so that even the smartest of fishes would be tricked by the floating insect.

It doesn't take long until something baits, and she fights with her line a little bit. Thankfully, one of the more skilled adventurers gives her some pointers on how to properly reel in her line and bring in the fish, and she manages to fish up a trout, which she immediately throws into the net that is still in the water.

When she notices the person next to her starting to talk, she takes the time to think about her answers.

"Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Luna, and I do not usually fish, though fishing seems very relaxing."

And then, after pulling her third eel, she shakes her head a bit

"Cods? I'm more worried about those eels. Maybe choosing this spot was a mistake."

Once the line stops to bite, after a couplee of eels, she decides to be a little bit more tricky and fish with an illusion of a live fish. While this doesn't seem to attract the attention of anything at first, Luna has fun chasing other fishes around.

This was Olenna's first request seeing how it was the only thing she could get her hands on. Fishing was something that her and her father used to do when she was a child so Olenna felt confident in her abilities to win. Before entering the tower she would run to a local fishing store to buy a rod and different types of bait.

Finally at the store her jaw would drop as she realized how much a rod would cost in this city. " you want how much for this?"

She didn't have much funds to spare. But as the men old would say, you weren't going to make money if you didn't spend a little right?

Quickly shifting her mindset she would throw the money onto the shops counter and begin running towards the tower entrance. Seeing a bunch of people gathered around Rolia she quickly would join the crowd so that she could here what was being said.

Olenna would find herself standing at the pond next to Luna, " Hello, Im Olenna, its nice to meet you." Olenna felt like this could be a good opportunity to network so that maybe she could get into a decent party. " Have you fished here before?"

Olenna would show to have some decent catches but nothing that was going to get her to the top. " There is to many Cod in this lake."

Gen was spending his day off from adventuring, but realizing there was a fishing competition where you got to keep the fish you caught as well as a potential price, he could not help but to sign up.

Setting up his sturdy self-made fishing gear and securing bait with ease (he had done this before, at times when game was hard to find or the tribe had been traveling in areas with many lakes) he then tossed the line into the water and waited patiently and still.

After all the caught fish and the one that got away, he wiped his brow and presented the pile to the judges.
"How did I do?"

Markus

bVOQoAt.png Fishing contest? This made Markus reminiscent of all those times father and he had fished for their next meal out in the wilderness. Sitting in utter silence and waiting for nature to provide...

He despised it. "How anyone finds it enjoyable is beyond me." Markus snorted to himself as he cast out his line. If it weren't for the prize, he wouldn't be squandering his time with this nonsense.

A bite! And it's a Gladius! He'd seen these fish hung up at some wealthy properties, a symbol of status, he just had to have it! Markus tried to reel it in but almost got pulled into the lake, he redoubled his efforts thinking where he'd hang it up at his place. He barely managed to reel it in and smack it over the head as it put up final resistance.

The second go now was another one he surprisingly recognized immediately from having studied a touch of alchemy in recent days. Somehow Markus began to enjoy this...

After tackling down a conger he was feeling quite good about himself. Suddenly a Caucius appeared, Markus scrambled for his bow but it was already long gone. "Ey come back you thief," Markus yelled out at the empty waters. A few people peered up at him in annoyance. "It's like a library in here," he thought in amusement.

A Cod and Solaris later, Markus hooked another Murena. "Geeze these things are plentiful in here... I'll make sure to put it to good use."

This was it, the final line to be cast... Wait that one didn't count, this is the final line... Markus reeled in another Conger, this one with more ease.

He hated to say it but, "that was kinda fun, I guess..."
He then noticed some of the other contestants who had already finished were having a chat. Having nothing to do, Markus invited himself over with a bit of swagger.

"Hey over there, I haven't seen you two fair ladies around the tower before, are you new to the guild? I see you both wield rapiers, would you both happen to come from the same fencing school?" He asked warmly, assuming that they must be acquaintances . He sized up their catches and added, "it'll be a close contest, you've both got some talent for this too I see."

Aerith Tollbeg

aerithICONSMALL.png.376fd6ebd6f105c146b79f3808179c03.pngAerith is a newcomer to the guild, and is still green as far as the adventuring life goes. He was never much of a fisherman, but he knew enough from his days as a farmhand to at least make an attempt.

The man walks into the contest with dark flowing robes behind him and his face hidden under a large and eccentric hat. The wide black-and-purple brim leads upward into a big cone that makes no attempt at hiding his wizardly flair. Despite this, Aerith's strategy isn't to use magic to do the work for him, and he plays honest in this contest. He approaches the pond with a rented rod and what is probably the wrong bait for half the fish in this pond, and casts his line.

The bobber floats on the surface of the pond and sits there. Eventually it bobs down once, then twice, and with a sharp yank upward Aerith catches his mark! A trout flails off the end of the line before it ceased movement as Aerith places a hand on it.

"Rest still fish, and let the embrace of beyond wash over you. Your life has served its purpose fully and your mortal form will provide sustenance to others." With a bittersweet stare the trout stops flailing and peacefully passes on, its body now resting in the catch bucket.

Aerith tries this trick again for a Murena he caught afterward. "This could make a good poison, hopefully it'll sell for just as well." Aerith was never much of an alchemist, and especially not a poisoner.

The third fish sneaks up on Aerith however and he is unable to catch whatever was on the line. As he peers into the watery abyss he sighs and decides to keep on going.

The fourth fish was but another simple trout. At this point Aerith is feeling down. Four catches and only 20 points puts him quite behind the rest. At the very least his next catch, a perch, is of some value.

Just when it seemed like his run would come up dull Aerith's sixth catch lunges his rod sharply forward. Whatever was on the line was strong as it snaps in half almost instantly. Aerith peers down and sees something big staring back, and silently prays that it won't leap out of the water and attack him, although this prayer would ultimately be in vain.

After re-lining and attaching a new hook, Aerith casts one final line and catches a fighter. He wrestles with whatever is on the line and pulls up a thrashing conger. It took some effort but eventually even this eel too gave in to the necromancer's release.

Source of Power: Relentless Training Casting Skill: Lore You have not inherited your magical abilities, but instead, you have trained long and hard to do what you do. Years of your life have been spent studying old tomes and testing magical theories. Magic users with the Relentless Training source are usually holed up somewhere while they perfect their abilities. Wizards and the like know a great deal, but most of their non-magical knowledge is just that: knowledge. They have not had many chances to apply that knowledge in the real world.

Discipline: Death You have mastered control over death and the dead. You can shoot blasts of green necrotic energy (Shoot), weaken your enemies (casting skill), and animate the dead (Provoke), starting at a Good (+3) difficulty—although this doesn't quite make them “living” again.

Discipline: Transform [Cost: 1 refresh] You have mastered the art of shapeshifting. You can transform yourself (casting skill) or another being (Provoke) into the form of another creature or person that you are familiar with. This is a Create an Advantage action. Transforming into creatures significantly smaller or larger than the target make the spell much more difficult. Changing portions of a target is easier than changing its whole self (i.e. - give the target gills rather than turning it into a fish). You can also transform objects, allowing you to mend them, weaken them, or alter their shape.

If an animated being has multiple skills at Average (+1), they can be combined to increase their power, as can stress boxes. So, if you exchange two free invokes, you can receive one Skill at Fair (+2) or two skills at Average (+1), along with one 2-point stress box or two 1- point stress boxes.

Looking over to Markus, Olenna would respond. " We actually just met as well.." Olenna wouldn't entertain the conversation of were she was from due to her still being wanted by her former kingdom. She would simply smile at him and at is statements of fencing. " Oh yes this contest is going be be close, from the looks of it I wont be winning though.."

Lyra looked dubiously at her surroundings. Newly arrived to the city, new to the guild, and the tower itself her first action... was a fishing contest. Unbelievable frankly. An easy start to her new life and a way to assess things, and maybe, just maybe build a little renown. She trundled up to the pond picking a spot off to the side and nodding at the motley assortment of fellow fishermen.

She unshoulders her pack, pulls her ice fishing rod out, assembles it, and retrieves a small tin of preserved fish to start the day as bait from her pack. Hook baited and ready she sat on her pack and began what she hoped to be a leisurely afternoon of fishing and observing.

The day had been enjoyable and relaxing so far. She’d been too silent by half, but she had just get here after all. Takes some time to ease the chill. She’d caught seven fish all told though she’d had her bait stolen by some rogue of a fish, as well as another mutant of a thing with a third eye had slipped her hook.

She had seven to be dried and cured and towards her score. Only having to pluck one sword faced beast from the water with her claw as it shook about and fought the line, and another fast fellow who thought he’d be off with a snack and her left with an empty hook. Not so fast though she whistled the winds into a stir and blasted the water stunning the sky fish before she called a sylph to her to grab it and add it to the basket. She looked around an eyebrow raised only slightly ashamed at her use of magic to do something as simple as grab a fish.

The prizes tucked away she rose packing her things once more before eyeing the others and debating what she’d do until the competition was over.

Scene: Cavernous Cistern

The first floor of the Tower consists of silent stone catacombs dimly lit by everburning torches that give off no smoke or heat. The deep waters of the cavernous cistern are shrouded in darkness, massive pillars rising to a vaulted ceiling. You are having a friendly competition, fishing on the edge of the pool.

I have six fate points left in this scene.

Aerith bit back a curse as he struggled with his latest catch - overall this had been a poor showing! How would he manage to recover?

The fish surrounding his latest cast suddenly fled, as a curious blue light came drifting through the water. The thing rose steadily as it neared, now an orb bobbing above the swelling surface, a fascinating and inviting pale luminescence. Aerith leaned forward to take a closer look.

The young mage topples into the water, generating groans and jokes from the other fishers - which turn to shouts of alarm as the something surges forward, ramming itself into the ledge. Off to the side Aerith pulls himself out of the pool, coughing and sputtering.

The beast looks like a cross between dragon and fish - it wriggles halfway on the shore, snapping at anyone that comes close.

Assistant Rolia"Shows over, folks! Get out of here or help us take that thing down!"

You can concede before taking an action - you flee the scene and keep your results from the contest. Rolia has issued a bounty on the beast - anyone still in the scene when it is defeated gains an additional 50 points, 1 renown, and 1 experience.

I start with six fate points and one boost: Shoreline Ambush.

aerithICONSMALL.png.46e43e3bac764c5451dae56a48d37fe0.pngAerith spits out the water in his mouth and crawls away from the shore before catching his breath and turning back to the monster. He grabs a nearby fish and begins charging himself with magic.

"Gills of trout and flippers such, Warp my flesh to grant this much. In the drink this mage shall plunge, and past the pale the power's from."

Aerith's skin starts to shine as the fish is absorbed temporarily into him. His soft pale flesh hardens into shining scales. He removes his gloves and shoes revealing the budding of fins and webs from his hands and feet. Slits appear on aerith's neck revealing gills to breathe down in the leviathan's domain.

"Transfer now my body so, fishy features magic throws. Warp my flesh to grant this much, In the drink this mage shall plunge!"

The spell's full effects take place, as aerith stares the leviathan down and charges towards the pond. His form is now changed to, at least partially, gain aquatic features allowing him to swim and not drown (hopefully) underwater.

Markus is swallowed by the beast and must test Fight or Physique to escape.

Gargangoma is surging! I have six fate points left in this scene and one boost called Shoreline Ambush.

With Gargangoma's original prey having vanished into the water, the leviathan pins its malevolent gaze on the upstart adventurer daring to challenge it and lunges forward - snapping him up in a single gulp! The eyes swivel, seeking another target in its futile efforts to sate its monstrous appetite.

Seeing what had just taken place, Olenna would quickly throw her fish bucket down and rush over to the aid of the group. " Oh God, this isnt good." Just as she was about to take out her rapier, she quickly stopped herself as she noticed the others in the water and inside of the creature. Instead Olenna would rush over to another area where there was nets laying on the ground. Picking them up Olenna would attempt to cast  the net over top of the fins of the creature in an attempt to slow its actions down.

"Damnit, why now!"

Luna hadn't taken her signature eye mask, she couldn't slip into her Persona of Tsuki right now. So, she did the only thing she knew how to, and pointed a finger at the water.

"Let there be light!"

With this, Luna hopes to light up the water enough that anyone should be able to clearly see the monster, and hopefully have a easier time surviving. However, the somewhat dim light seems to be flickering around the fish as she is not able to fully focus on it, worried that she might be next to enter his stomach
