Agitha.jpg         Agitha, Rat-folk witch

Though she really has nothing in mind, she leaves her mount tied up and enters with the others, and starts sniffing about the offerings. In the end she purchases a scroll of Climbing Beanstalk as it seems to fit the theme of the mission.

Belyr listens closely to Patrick, his face a bit serious looking but with a twinkle in his eyes. "Well, there's not much to be done except to get there and see what we see. Let me wrap things up here really quick," he says as he darts in the Mystic Pearl and returns with some scrolls in a case.

Once everyone has had a chance to convert their funds into useful items, you all return back to the coach and Parker sets the horses in motion once again.

Spend your pennies?

It is worth considering that there may not be many opportunities to spend your funds once you leave Arcane Row behind. If you would like something, now might be a good time to buy. If something does strike anyone's fancy, please let me know.

Who travels where?

Just to be sure, can everyone please indicate where they are while traveling? Those of you that have mounts will presumably be riding them, but for the others, there is the option of joining Parker on the bench in front of the coach, or indeed on the roof, if sitting inside is too mundane.

Traffic in Venza is horrendous, but things open up considerably once you hit the Eastern Trade Road. You while away the time as Parker expertly guides the coach along, periodically slowing down to inquire about the state of the road from travelers heading in the opposite direction. Nothing learned during these conversations indicates significant trouble up ahead, nor does it provide any clue to the Baron's possible whereabouts.

At Baron's Cross, the coach leaves the main road and heads down a narrow, somewhat overgrown road towards Capoe. As you leave the vicinity of the Trade Road, the forest becomes more notable, a sure sign that you are approaching the edges of the Tenebrous Wood. Soon, the village comes in sight. Wooden houses cluster close round a small village green, with gardens and fields stretching out to the treeline; there is a sense that the forest is merely biding its time. People are tending the fields, busy with domestic chores, and several small children are playing. At first glance, nothing seems out of the ordinary.

Parker brings the coach to a halt. "Capoe is the nearest settlement of any kind to Oak Lodge, down the road through the village. We can press on, or stop to make enquiries first. What do you propose?"

OOC

Please decide amongst yourselves whether you wish to rush towards Oak Lodge, or spend time conversing with the villagers?

Agitha decides to take the travel time to get better aquainted with her new mount and give it some exercise. A gecko is quite different from a riding rat and the gait takes some getting used to, plus its tendency to want to climb trees requires a more firm hand. The nice thing is the traffic in the city is not really an issue as roads are not really necessary, though folks seem to have a problem with someone crawling across their house or storefront, and boy does it make sticking the mount difficult when you are sideways. All in all, a pleasant trip, though her backside is suffering by the time the party arrives, and by that time she is ready to dismount for a while.

"Let's ask around here for a while, shall we? Maybe someone has heard something."

Ashril Swiftstride, halfling ranger

Ashril enjoys the breeze as they travel through the country side; even the wildness of the deeper woods seem cultivated to someone who grew up on the wild expanses of the northern Ouhm River though. When they get to Capoe, he ties up Bill in front of whatever passes for the town tavern, and heads in to ask about general news, leaving others with more silver tongues to ask the more directed questions.

Some additional scene-setting: Capoe is too small to have an inn of any kind, but it does have a stump of an old tree off to one side of the village green, around which several (mostly elderly) people have pulled up some chairs and are chatting amongst themselves. While it is currently still dry, clouds are gathering over the hills, promising rain in the near future.

The weather, I'm sure, is the subject of the said men's lively conversation right now 🙂

Agitha approaches the chatterers and hangs nervously around the perimeter, listening in before she jumps in and rudely interrupts.

As he notes two of the party riding on their own mounts Belyr takes a moment to debate where he intends to sit. With a nod to Raphael he explains, "It seems I must be rude to either you or Parker. If you don't mind, I'll plan to sit with him for now - I'm always interested in seeing new places." Then he climbs up to sit beside the butler and looks out at the first the crowds, and then the countryside as they travel.

Once at Capoe the swordsman/cleric smiles at the gathered elders but remains in his seat. With a gentle, but clear, knock he ensures that Raphael knows there is an opportunity to get out if he likes. "We've a chance to walk about, if you like," he announces before stretching his arms and legs. "I'm anxious to keep going, but they look more interested in asking about," he says to their driver with a nod towards Agitha and Ashril.

As the coach halts and you seek to take advantage of the opportunity to gather intelligence, the elderly farmers nudge each other, pointing their long-stemmed pipes at you as they discuss matters amongst themselves. You get the impression that your arrival may be one of the more interesting things to have happened in Capoe recently.

Ashril and Agitha are first to approach the group. As they do, one especially elderly man gets up from his seat, squints at you and addresses you directly "Who are you then? And what are you doing in these parts? We don't get a lot of traffic in Capoe..." The words are spoken not unfriendly, but with some authority.

Gathering courage after being addressed, Agitha moves closer and responds. "Us? Oh, we were asked by a nice lady to check on her husband at Oak Lodge. She is getting a bit worried since she sent one of her staff a while ago to check and he never returned and I guess she is pretty rich and can afford hiring folks to go looking, so here we are. She sent some fellow named Caro? You know anything about all that?"

"Baroness Segrado is concerned that she has not heard from her husband in the normal timely manner. We decided to stop here on our way to their lodge to see what you fine gentlemen may have heard about the matter." Ashril tries to clarfiy the task at hand without repeating too many details unnecessarily.

The demeanor of your elderly interrogator improves notably when you mention the Baron and Oak Lodge. "Heading to the big house are ye? Oh, now I see, that's Mister Parker over there... Very well. Welcome to Capoe. I'm Pate, Pate the Younger, and I'm one of the Elders here in town, when I'm done farmin'." Squinting to get a good look at you all, the old man introduces himself. "Yeah, Oak Lodge is just a few miles further down the road. One of my grandnieces, Viola, she works there as a maid, as it happens, and young Georgio from Marcus's farm sometimes helps out with the gardenin'. That's all that happens there these days, the Baron gone completely mad for growin' flowers 'n things, which you can't even eat!" The old farmer is clearly upset at a basic level about this waste of effort and good topsoil. "Gone missin' he has? Now that is interestin'... He passed through here, oh, must've been about a week or so ago? All fine 'n dandy, right as rain. Then, a day later, some other gent on a fancy horse come ridin' through town, didn't stop though, but headed on down towards Oak Lodge... an' then a fews days after that, young Caro, we know him, on account 'f him carryin' messages back 'n forth back to Venza, he came passin' through, also didn't stop to chat, which thinkin' about it was a bit unusual. But now you mention it, I can't remember seein' any of 'em come back up the road again."

He turns round to ask his elderly friends: "What do you say boys, do you remember seein' anyone coming from down Oak Lodge way this past week?", only to receive various rambling versions of 'no'.

"Interesting. Thank you for your assistance." Ashril hides the concern the additional news gives him; he simply quietly nods to the gentlemen, and gives his companions a chance to ask any further questions before he heads back to Bill, ready to ride on to the manor.

"Thanks. Hopefully it is a bit of nothing, but if not we will try to make sure your niece is safe too. Family is important. "

She returns to the carriage and announces "I think we are ready to go now."

Raphael, who'd been very quiet after his stop at the Mystic Pearl to pick up a few supplies, let the others talk and chose to merely observe. From what the others had learned, three different people had traveled down the road and none had come back.

It was a good thing he'd come prepared for trouble.

(Raph purchased a Ring of Protection +1 and an Ioun Torch from the Pearl before setting out with the others. Apologies for the delay. Work. Ugh.)
