Corridors

After a good minute or so of fiddling around with the lock, Lars finally manages to pop it after a little initial fumbling.

 

But soon as he goes to try to open the door however, he's met with stiff resistance that keeps it from opening. It seems the door may have been barricaded from the inside.

There came a muffled, incomprehensible mumbling from the other side of the door even as Noriko started to chime in. But then all went quiet there shortly after she identified herself by name.

 

After she finished, a short if uncomfortable pause followed. Then the voice came back again, "N-N-Nor-rick-oh?"

Darn Avistanis… Your whole life you've not heard more than maybe a handful of people outside your family manage to pronounce your name right.

 

The only westerner who's gotten even close to pronouncing it right the first try was Sandru, but even then, he's got this unmistakeable Varisian hard R slipped in there, that he probably isn't even fully aware of.

"… Fr-f-from the Rusty D-dragon?" The voice behind the door continued, sounding quite a little less hostile than he was a moment ago. "D-dimira brings me d-delicious pies from you s-s-sometimes on Firedays!"

 

"P-p-please! Y-you gotta h-help her!"

"Th-th-the angry bo-bones... the w-w-walking bones, they jumped us in the m-middle of the n-night..." The man's voice, though calm, had reduced to a little bit of incomprehensible muttering again, the information coming in little disjointed spurts, "It's s-s-safe in h-here, j-just a few m-minor wounds... Safe from the d-d-dead one...."

 

But as soon as Asura suggested they take him away, the fear returned immediately and the voice seems tense again, "No no no! I c-can't leave w-wi-without Dimira!"

 

A few moments of silence goes by, before you hear the sound of something heavy being moved, and then the creaking of the door opening just a slit. Distinctly you see a figure behind very cautiously trying to peek out of the room, his crossbow still trained to fire as he does.

Then after a few seconds the door opens the rest of the way, revealing the face of whom you had been talking with, "You p-p-p-promise y-you'll save Dimira..."

 

Behind him inside the room, there's some crates and a few barrels, as well as some supplies and a few bedrolls piled against the back wall. A bullseye lantern burns softly, its flickering light pointed into a corner away from the door.

She really hoped that this Dimira wasn't one of the dead they had already encountered.

"Sh-sh-she... uh..." The man stuttered for a moment, then stopped speaking completely, looking like he's deep in thought. "Got r-red hair, b-b-blue eyes, l-little bit s-shorter than I-I-I am I g-guess..."

 

"Th-th-th-the voice t-t-took her!" He charged vehemently, not really understanding that what he's saying may or may not make sense to those around him. Then, perhaps as an afterthought, he shoves the light crossbow along with a quiver of bolts he's been clutching at Darhana, "H-h-here, t-take this. I-I-If it he-helps you b-b-bring Dimira back, I-I-I wa-want you t-to have it."

 

A quick look at the crossbow reveals that it is one of masterwork craftsmanship.

"I'll keep using my own bow," Darhana said as she took the crossbow, "but I'm sure someone of the group can put it to good use. But what about you? Don't you need something to defend yourself with?"

She looked at Bianca who didn't have a weapon with her, except maybe a small hidden dagger. True, she had spells, but if there was one thing Darhana knew was that those would eventually run out. And having a back-up was always a good idea.
