Book One: The Scouring of Gate Pass Act Three: Escaping The City

Case in hand, the small group bugs out from the room and from the grounds of the famed magic school. The crowd at the gates seems to have completely vanished as darkness is only moments away from enveloping the city. The city is oddly quiet for the first time since the fighting broke out, a sign that the fighting has slowed for the evening.

You make your way to the church, just as it turns from dusk to dark. Not too many people seemed to care about where you were going. The city seems too tired to care about the coming and going of a few folk.

The moon claimed the evening sky as a blanket of exhaustion covered the city. The citizens, too tired to care about the next calamity, allowed the newly minted resistance members to make their way to the church unnoticed. Anne, for her part, was as silent as those they passed. It had been a long day. Less than 24 hours had turned her from a carefree artist to a murdering thief.

As she walked, she rolled her injured shoulder, testing its flexibility and strength. Her mahogany eyes glanced at those she walked with, wondering if they would all continue on this ill-conceived mission. Anne bit her upper lip in thought. Many times over the last few hours she had wished to simply go home, but as they passed smoldering buildings and heard the distant cries of children, the half-orc knew she would continue with this path.

Smoke swirled along rooftops, leading them to their destination. The church still stood. A tension she hadn't known was there eased and her mind immediately went to the small boy who she had carried last night. She had told him she would return, and she had. Anne moved with a sudden quickness to the front door, eager to find him.

Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.Spells of the MarkIf you have the Spellcasting or the Pact Magic class feature, the spells on the Mark of Finding Spells table are added to the spell list of your spellcasting class.

1st: Faerie Fire, Longstrider
2nd: Locate Animals or Plants, Locate Object
3rd: Clairvoyance, Speak with Plants
4th: Divination, Locate Creature
5th: Commune with Nature
SpellcastingAn event in your past, or in the life of a parent or ancestor, left an indelible mark on you, infusing you with arcane magic. This font of magic, whatever its origin, fuels your spells.

Cantrips
At 1st level, you know four cantrips of your choice from the sorcerer spell list. You learn additional sorcerer cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Sorcerer table.

Spell Slots
The Sorcerer table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your sorcerer spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these sorcerer spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell Burning Hands and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast Burning Hands using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
You know two 1st-level spells of your choice from the sorcerer spell list.

The Spells Known column of the Sorcerer table shows when you learn more sorcerer spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the sorcerer spells you know and replace it with another spell from the sorcerer spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your sorcerer spells, since the power of your magic relies on your ability to project your will into the world. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a sorcerer spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spellcasting Focus
You can use an arcane focus as a spellcasting focus for your sorcerer spells.
Origin: Aberrant MindPsionic Spells
Starting at 1st level, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Psionic Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn't count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be a divination or an enchantment spell from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list.

Psionic Spells
Sorcerer Level Spells
1st Arms of Hadar, Dissonant Whispers, Mind Sliver
3rd Calm Emotions, Detect Thoughts
5th Hunger of Hadar, Sending
7th Evard's Black Tentacles, Summon Aberration
9th Rary's Telepathic Bond, Telekinesis
Telepathic SpeechStarting at 1st level, you can form a telepathic connection between your mind and the mind of another. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You and the chosen creature can speak telepathically with each other while the two of you are within a number of miles of each other equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1 mile). To understand each other, you each must speak mentally in a language the other knows.

The telepathic connection lasts for a number of minutes equal to your sorcerer level. It ends early if you are incapacitated or die or if you use this ability to form a connection with a different creature.
Font of Magic (3)At 2nd level, you tap into a deep wellspring of magic within yourself. This wellspring is represented by sorcery points, which allow you to create a variety of magical effects.

Sorcery Points. You have 2 sorcery points, and you gain more as you reach higher levels, as shown in the Sorcery Points column of the Sorcerer table. You can never have more sorcery points than shown on the table for your level. You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest.

Flexible Casting. You can use your sorcery points to gain additional spell slots, or sacrifice spell slots to gain additional sorcery points. You learn other ways to use your sorcery points as you reach higher levels.
Creating Spell Slots. You can transform unexpended sorcery points into one spell slot as a bonus action on your turn. The Creating Spell Slots table shows the cost of creating a spell slot of a given level. You can create spell slots no higher in level than 5th. Any spell slot you create with this feature vanishes when you finish a long rest.

Converting a Spell Slot to Sorcery Points. As a bonus action on your turn, you can expend one spell slot and gain a number of sorcery points equal to the slot's level.

Creating Spell Slots
Spell Slot Level Sorcery Point Cost
1st 2
2nd 3
3rd 5
4th 6
5th 7
Metamagic: Careful & EmpoweredAt 3rd level, you gain the ability to twist your spells to suit your needs. You gain two of the following Metamagic options of your choice. You gain another one at 10th and 17th level.

You can use only one Metamagic option on a spell when you cast it, unless otherwise noted.

Careful Spell. When you cast a spell that forces other creatures to make a saving throw, you can protect some of those creatures from the spell's full force. To do so, you spend 1 sorcery point and choose a number of those creatures up to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one creature). A chosen creature automatically succeeds on its saving throw against the spell.

Empowered Spell. When you roll damage for a spell, you can spend 1 sorcery point to reroll a number of the damage dice up to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one). You must use the new rolls.
You can use Empowered Spell even if you have already used a different Metamagic option during the casting of the spell.

Belfyr - Half-Elf Ranger8daae369607892fa793b818b437f9a62.jpg

The portly half-elf made his way down the stairs of the dormitory and out into the evening air without much complaint. Going down was always easier than going up, and in this case the pacing had been important. There was a duel happening somewhere in this magic consortium and Belfyr hadn't the least bit of interest in finding out who won nor what the consequences of that loss might mean.

In fact, as Belfyr slipped out into the cooler night he felt no guilt at all. There was perhaps plenty of it to be passed around, but he'd never had much trouble rationalizing his impending and inevitable departures. This felt no different. This place was a means to an end and that means had ended. By the time they were outside the gates, his mind was on their destination.

As the church loomed into view, other feelings took hold. Belfyr had spent the majority of his time inside this place working as a triage nurse. He suspected that role could be quickly and easily picked back up once inside, but he felt the pangs of tiredness already beginning to creep into his bones. It would mean a hard decision coming his way soon, and this one would hold a sizeable amount of guilt if he chose poorly.

It didn't need to be said, but his mouth worked before his mind could stop it. "Try not to swing your c*cks about, yes? They've likely got spies inside." He was careful not to look at any of the men with him when he spoke, but he was pretty sure at least two of them knew he was talking to them.

Bronn was happy enough to get out of the damned wizardly academy, with its damned elves and damned snooty rivalries. He resisted the urge to check his pack for the case - it was still there, and it wasn't going anywhere if he had his way. Still, the thing was burning a hole in his back, such was the desire to finagle the thing open.

He puffed the cigar he held clenched in his teeth, considering what he'd do if picking didn't work. He was certain he could break it, and done correctly there would be little risk to the contents inside. At the church he'd be able to conjure the tools he needed, so long as they had a little time. He was snapped out of his thoughts as Anne rolled her injured shoulder and his already dark thoughts about the elves darkened further. They'd need to get out sooner rather than later, lest this bitch wizard caught them.

At Belfyr's sudden outburst he smothered a chuckle with loud clearing of this throat. The sound brought attention to him, when what he was really wanting was some alone time with their prize.

"We'll want a room with some privacy. I'll can make some tools to break this thing open - I'd rather know what we have before we try to bargain it out. Besides, if we already know what's in it we can sell it back to the elves if we need to."

Iymbryl Darcassan - Shahalesti Paladin https://i.pinimg.com/564x/19/cc/f5/19ccf52461370b5a820a83760ba0a075.jpg

AC: 19 (chainshirt & shield) | HP: 25/25 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 13 (60ft Darkvision) | Spell Slots: 1st 0/3 (+5, DC 13) | Lay on Hands: 15/15 | Leadership Performance 1/3

The burgeoning darkness was an odd comfort. In previous days, Iymbryl always found himself on edge during night patrols. But now the city was still and silent. It reminded him of a wounded animal’s shallow breaths as it hid from a predator. There were no smiles on the people they passed, everyone just shuffled by their gazes downcast. Buildings in the distance still belched trails black smoke into the sky, drowning out the cold and distant stars. Iymbryl had to wonder if Gate Pass would ever truly recover from this.

Despite their success, few words were exchanged by the group. Oddly enough, it was Belfyr who broke the silence. Iymbryl raised an eyebrow at the man’s comment, silently wondering what he was really trying to say. Part of him wanted to get clarity on the statement, but instead the guard captain simply let it go. Everyone in the city was dealing with loss in their own way. This group perhaps had it harder than most, having the responsibility for aiding the city thrust upon them. These were not trained veteran guards fulfilling their duty, they were artists, criminals, and cooks that had banded together in a desperate attempt to save their home.

Iymbryl did his best to stand tall as they entered, not out of any sense of personal pride, but because the forlorn victims who sought asylum there needed someone to inspire them that things were getting better, even if he didn’t believe it himself. He looked at Bronn and nodded. “Then we should pay our respects to Father Watcher. I’m certain he could make some space available.” Iymbryl remained silent at the thought of selling the information to what could be a great ally in the fight against Ragesia, to make a quick coin. The idea made his stomach turn. The Elf made his way to the adjoining hall and down the narrow staircase Torrent had shown them the first time they had come. It was strange to seem so comfortable in a hidden Resistance base, but these were strange times. “Father Watcher. We’ve returned. Successfully. Since Rivereye didn’t have a way to open the case, it might be prudent to allow our master…locksmith…make an attempt. I think the more important question is what you plan on doing with this information, now that we’ve retrieved it.”

Olvyn Tallindor - Human Cleric (Grave)https://i.ibb.co/sVDd7y5/human-wizard-small.jpg

AC: 16 | HP: 13/21 | Initiative: +0 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Slots: 1st 4/4 2nd 1/2 (+5, DC 13) | Channel Divinity: 1/1 | Concentration: None

It would have been a simple matter to slip away during their retreat back to the church. A quick disguise and a different turn around a corner would have been enough. Seeing the ransacked state of the academy however convinced Olvyn that the chance of finding what he was looking for (a solution to his brand) was unlikely. In addition, his wounded state would mean that being caught alone by some desperate students might be a greater risk than he was comfortable taking. With a sigh, the elder Tallindor resigned himself to follow the group back to the simple church that searched as a temporary headquarters. For now.

Arriving back at their destination, Olvyn took little time finding a bench to rest himself on. In the bustle of their departure, he had not taken the time to properly examine his injury in case it was more serious than expected. A quick inspection determined that the blade had gone in and out swiftly, leaving a clean though still painful wound for him to contend with. Not knowing what else lay in store for them tonight, he resisted the urge to use his divine magic to fully repair the damage lest it be needed in more dire situations.

The captain was taking charge again, a situation that Olvyn was fine with for the time being. The old necromancer had no clue what might be in the case but was willing to entertain their "mission" for the time being. Most important in his mind was finding some time to question his daughter on her abilities, when they manifested and the strengths and limitations of her skills. Seeing the others preoccupied, he waved in Yveran's direction and indicated to her burn marks.

"Yveran - I mean Anne. Let me take a look at that wound while the others try their luck. We still have a long way to go and I would not want any lingering injuries do fester during the battle."

Her eyes scanned the mass of humanity that labored under fear and desperation within the confines of the temple. They sought a single child, a single pale face covered in dirt and soot. Anne found no familiar eyes, no boy small seeking her. "Where is he?"  She mumbled to herself. Her eyes glistened, but before any further emotion could reveal itself, Olvyn's voice echoed behind her.

She took a deep breath. The others had moved below. There was no one to save her from her father. It was inevitable. From the moment she saw him in the abandoned tavern, Anne knew he would find some way to corner her. It has actually taken him longer than she had thought it would. Slowly, the woman turned to meet her dad's gaze. "Thank you, for calling me Anne."  A hand raised to touch the bruising along her collarbone. "It's fine. Iymbryl patched me up."

The half-orc rolled her shoulder, barely wincing, to prove the injury was of no concern. She then looked around, hoping for some rescue, but none came, leaving an awkward pause between father and daughter.

The silence dragged on for a beat too long before Olvyn stepped forward to take a closer look at his daughter's injured shoulder.

"Even if the good captain took care of most of your injuries, it does not hurt to have another inspection. The divine does not always catch all the possible lingering effects of a wound, it merely speeds up the healing process."

As he reached forward to brush Yveran's braided hair aside, the old man hesitated in his actions. Though Olvyn had never been the most affectionate of fathers (he left most of the caretaking to his servants), he had always taken it upon himself to check his daughter for serious injuries whenever she had gotten herself scuffed in her various adventures. Of which there were plenty during Yveran's younger days. Now that they were standing awkwardly close to each other, Olvyn had to admit to himself that the young girl he knew had grown and changed immensely in their time apart. So much so that Olvyn, even with his clinical background, was hesitant to break the barrier of touch without proper permission.

"Sit down, pull your hair back and let me take a proper look. It will only take a minute. And no squirming." The old necromancer then tilted his head forward and dropped his voice to a low whisper. "And while we are here, it would be good if you can share more about your gift from our bloodline. Like when it manifested and the extent of its abilities."

Book One: The Scouring of Gate Pass Act Three: Escaping The City

Entering the church is a bit of a hassle. If there were a hundred people crammed into the church before, there are 200 hundred now. As you open the doors Torrent squeezes by you to start checking on some of the people she knows. The rest of you have to make some room for yourselves in order to even shut the doors. Olvyn is able to squeeze onto a bench to rest himself, and Imbryl is able to make his way down the halls with the group in tow. Unlike last time, the halls are now also filled with bodies as everyone tries to hide safely in the church.

Father Watcher looked especially drained. As Imbryl began asking him about the case his eyes widened. "Not here, come!"  He vanished further into the crowd, but you could see a door open and close at the end of the hall, the door to his office. As you look around, you realize this is the only spot left in the entire building that is not covered by humanity.

Father Watcher motions to his desk, his eyes are gaunt with dark circles under them as he allows you to take the place on the desk. "What we do with the information in the case is highly dependant on what is in the case, or if we can get into the case. Have any of you heard the news of the battle while you have been about?"

Anne's lips dipped at the corners. Her father had said the same when she was younger of magical healing. When she had stumbled into the poisoned leaves that he grew behind their house, magic had cleared the rash yet the itching sensation lingered. Olvyn had applied a salve to help. When she had fallen from the stool while attempting to retrieve a book for him, Anne's ankle had broken. His curative spell mended the bone but the muscles and tendons still screamed from the injury. Her father had fashioned a supportive sock and provided a crutch, to help her walk.

She begrudgingly sat but looked away as she pulled her braids to the side. Her eyes watched as Iymbryl, Bronn, and Belfyr disappeared into the mass of refugees. For the first time since he had returned, Anne was alone with her father. There was a mix of emotions, nearly impossible to define, but as Olvyn spoke one broke through. Anger.

"The first time we are alone in a decade and you want to know about my magic." She shook her head, grimacing slightly at the motion from the pain that still lingered in her collarbone. "I thought, for a very short moment, that you actually cared about me. But you just want to know what I can do. Am I just one of your experiments?"  Sadness touched her eyes. "Was mom?"

Belfyr - Half-Elf Ranger8daae369607892fa793b818b437f9a62.jpg

AC: 15 | HP: 20/20 | HD: 3/3d10 | Initiative: +3 | Gathered Swarm | Favored Foe | Spell Slots: 1st 3/3 2nd -/- | DM Inspiration: 1/1

As the half-elf rounded the corner and set his eyes upon the church, his heart sank into his boots. There weren't a lot of people about outside, but there didn't need to be for the signs to tell him what lie within. Discarded trunks, crates, and carts buried the courtyard with debris. These people had brought with them what little they had and found themselves being told to leave half of it outside due to space. Belfyr thought of a time when those things would be scrounged through by pick-pockets and scavengers but then he realized that Gate Pass probably didn't have enough of a population for that now. What was whole was now shattered.

Once inside, the opinion was momentarily undermined. There were people everywhere. It almost took the breath out of him. It certainly caused him to breathe from his mouth for now.

Belfyr allowed Iymbryl to lead -as he had somewhat implied outside- but he wasn't going to make the guardsman deal with this ordeal alone. He needed no invitation -nor sought one- to spiritually attach himself to the armor-clad authority figure as they pressed through the crowd. Belfyr's wider girth gave the dwarf behind him at least some reprieve, even if his steps almost stepped upon the leading man in front of him.

The silence of the forgotten back room is another strange change to their senses. The drone of people outside was now muffled by distance and a door, but it felt as though it was completely bare to the stones in here. Belfyr offered the Father Watcher a queer look, unsure if he was truly asking or if he was simply leading his own story into the conversation.

"We've been occupied with other things." He finally said, looking to the others as if unsure if it was worth reminding Father Watcher what their mission had been. "Is it good or bad news?"

Olvyn Tallindor - Human Cleric (Grave)https://i.ibb.co/sVDd7y5/human-wizard-small.jpg

AC: 16 | HP: 13/21 | Initiative: +0 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Slots: 1st 4/4 2nd 1/2 (+5, DC 13) | Channel Divinity: 1/1 | Concentration: None

Olvyn gingerly touched the scorch marks left by the lantern archon's rays. From the look of things, the celestial creature had not been messing around and was going for the throat with each of its strikes. The former necromancer had to admit that captain's rejuvenating power had done a good job in mending the most extensive parts of the damage.

"This should fully heal once we get some rest. You will just have to make do with a little bit of pain until then. No need to expend more magic that might be necessary later. And of course I care for you, young lady. If I did not, I would have left this city long ago."

Olvyn paused briefly considering his next words. When she was younger, Yveran had often asked about her mother. As was natural of course. A young girl of her exuberance could hardly be expected to contain that curiosity for very long. The elder Tallindor had only shared snippets of information. That she was half orc and half elf, very charming and loved Olvyn and her deeply. He still remembered how fiercely Yveran had cried the night her questions wore him down and he told her emphatically that her mother had already passed and that they would never meet. They could not afford another breakdown, not right now. Better to change the topic back to relevant matters.

"Emotional outbursts are unbecoming for a girl of your age however. I told you before that we would speak of your mother when the time was right. Seeing that we are in the middle of a war, that time is not right now. Instead we need to determine precisely what manner of gift you have received and the extent of its abilities. This could be key in our surviving the weeks to come. Have you tested the range of it? Can you also sense or only deliver? Should we move this conversation to..." Olvyn waved his hand vaguely upwards to try to get his point across.

Iymbryl Darcassan - Shahalesti Paladin https://i.pinimg.com/564x/19/cc/f5/19ccf52461370b5a820a83760ba0a075.jpg

AC: 17 (chainshirt & shield) | HP: 25/25 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 13 (60ft Darkvision) | Spell Slots: 1st 0/3 (+5, DC 13) | Lay on Hands: 15/15 | Leadership Performance 1/3

It took Iymbryl a long time to consider Father Watcher's response. He did a quick glance around the room to see only Belfyr and Bronn had accompanied him. The guard captain hated the idea of Olvyn off somewhere without supervision, but perhaps that was the lesser of two evils in this instance. Now they had a case people were apparently willing to kill for, and yet had no idea what was inside or how to get in. Bronn seemed their only hope now, so he hoped the Dwarf was as talented as Anne said he was.

What if there was nothing of value in the case? Could it have been a rouse to divert the enemies' forces to focus on something else while they invaded? Iymbryl doubted that was the case, and yet with so many unknowns, anything was possible at this point. All he knew was that they had risked their lives, and still didn't even know what for.

Iymbryl came out of his quiet contemplation just in time to hear Father Watcher asking something about a battle. There wasn't much to add to what Belfyr had already said, so Iymbryl simply nodded in agreement and waited for the priest to explain what was going on.

spacer.pngBronn the Salvor (Mountain Dwarf Artificer)

AC: 18 | HP: 24/24 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 10 |Spell Slots: 1st 2/3 | Concentration: None | Notes

Bronn was chafing with irritation at the delays; opening the case seemed the thing of most importance at the moment. It would be great if everyone could shut up and he could get a place to work. He shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot as Watcher led them to a place deeper in but not particularly suited to working - at least, not work of the type that Bronn was used to.

"Mostly we been trying not to get killed. But I agree we gotta get into this case first, so you wanna give me some space and leave me to it?"

He had taken the case out and was holding it under his arm, his dark gaze noting the quiet but urgent fashion in which Olvyn and Anne were conversing and his face darkened further. Whatever the old man was pestering her about was like to do more harm than good, but now wasn't a great time for him to intercede. He wondered if the necromancer had ever thought of anything except himself and gave a low, disgusted snort at the thought.

Book One: The Scouring of Gate Pass Act Three: Escaping The City

The Father looks over the group and nods. "Of course, you were too busy to hear, I thought maybe you had run into information on your search for the case."  It was oddly as he spoke that something changed. At first, the change was subtle, it seemed like the people outside the room were quieter. Then it was obvious that everyone was suddenly not speaking. The change was not comfortable, but more of the unnerving silence that comes when a group of people are extremely freaked out.

As the quiet continued you heard, or more accurately not heard, another major change. The alarm bells that had been going off the entire day had ceased clanging. It took longer to register this fact because the ringing seemed to still be in your ears, though dull, and fading. Father Watcher paused and sighed a bit as the din of the day seemed to stop all at once.

"It is rumored that The Council has agreed to a cease-fire...that news can not be a good sign. It seems the rumors may be true..."

He moved aside and offered Bronn his desk and the area behind it. "I am afraid this is the only private space I have available. Everywhere else there are scared people looking for a safe place to be. I hope this temple is still one of them."
