The Dungeon

Everyone:

The party begins their descent, with Dekmal leading the way and followed by the others. The ladder is old, dusty and creaks as the party climb down, but it holds despite the adventurers' weight. The journey down takes several minutes, but eventually the party reaches the bottom: with the benefit of torchlight, the party sees a large, earthen space roughly 200 feet x 200 feet with an eight-foot ceiling. Dust and dirt stir as the adventurers shift their feet. There is no sign of water and the only sounds are those created by the party when they move or speak ...

As the party moves to examine the area, a loud voice from nowhere and everywhere speaks, "WARE YE PILGRIM! YE HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF IOMEDAE. CAUSE NO EVIL IN THIS, HER SHRINE, ELSE YE SHALL DIE MOST HORRIBLY."

Dekmal has a shield on one arm, and lantern in the other hand as he proceeds. Not the most armed of states, but he's more interested in being protected and seeing where he's going.

"Well, let's avoid the evil everyone. I'm firmly on the side of not dying. And I'll put in an extra bit of caution to avoid the most horribly aspect."

He moves to start spiraling out from the landing zone of the ladder, "We should see what our options are here... hopefully the townsfolk won't be in too much of a rush to head down here."

Hall and Val just look at each other in confusion. Val asks Hall, "Who said that?" Hall shrugs his shoulders as he wears a frown on his face that can only be seen with the light of their torch. At this point nether on them really understand the gravity of the situation they have found themselves in.

LG Human Paladin, AC: 2, HP: 6/7

Upon hearing the voice, Jocelyn feels the presence of his Goddess; he quickly utters a short prayer to Iomedae.

"Oh sweet Iomedae, I want more than anything to prove worthy of you..." he then whispers. "I welcome and await your trial."

The paladin readies his longsword in his right hand, and equips his shield in his left.

Merrick paused in his look around as the voice spoke. He had to admit that despite his faith's sometimes alliance with the church of Iomedae, being in an area sacred to that deity and possibly being judged by It was disconcerting.

"There are many aspects to evil. Courage does not always mean rash actions and attacking perceived wrongs, or evils. I suggest we do not attack anything here unless we are attacked first or are assured it is necessary.", he called out, knowing some were prone to rash actions.

The Dungeon

Everyone:

As the party began to investigate the barren cave - a light appeared in front of them expanding in size and brilliance! Then, it began to dissipate until they were left looking at a humanoid figure dressed in full, glowing plate armor and helmet concealing its form underneath completely - sheathed sword at its waist! On its breastplate was a faded image of a downturned golden sword*! Its voice boomed across the cave, "WHO ARE YOU, AND WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE HERE?"

Merrick started to reach for his flail, as his eyes took in the spectral armored figure that took form before form. Before his loosed the weapon from his belt, his eyes widened and he calmed.

"Iomedae. The symbols. Perhaps our paladin should answer.", he recommended with an encouraging smile.

Jocelyn nods in Merrick's direction, before turning to the mysterious knight.

He sheathes his sword.

"I am Jocelyn, follower and paladin of Iomedae." he says. "These are my companions."

"We were given access to this, Her shrine by Father Lehrem, priest of Iomedae. The town's inhabitants seem to have gone mad and to have joined some sort of evil cult; we would rescue the town if we can, but for now Father Lehrem urged us to go down this path to avoid getting lynched by the mad crowd." he adds.

The Dungeon

Everyone:

The ancient knight looks over the party, "This site was once a grand temple dedicated to Iomedae, but the Dark One - Asmodeus - compelled his evil children to desecrate it hundreds of years ago. Now, it has become a cursed place, as you have seen in the town above - founded and controlled by the insane followers of Asmodeus! You have been marked by Iomedae to cleanse this place of this evil, once and for all! It will not be a simple task as all manner of twisted nightmares thrives in this unnatural darkness! You must drive deep into the heart of darkness and unleash the light of Iomedae - then, this region will be returned to being a holy site! The journey of a lifetime begins through 'yon door ..."

Then as a passing mist, the knight fades from view - revealing simple wooden double-doors roughly eighty feet to the south ....!

Jocelyn listens to the knight's tale.

"Very well." he says as the knight vanishes. "I shall help restore Iomedae's Light here if I can."

The young man whispers a short prayer to his Goddess. He then walks up to the door, and opens it once his companions are near him.

The Dungeon

Everyone:

The doors creak open and the fetid odor of rotted flesh greets the party! Their light sources illuminate an earthen space enveloped in darkness at the edges beyond the light! But thirty feet directly opposite the doorway stands a hunched six-foot humanoid figure in tattered clothing ... 'they' turn to face the party and the group sees this being's skin is rotted and gray with maggots crawling from its empty eye-sockets and gaping mouth! The unliving creature growls and charges the party!

As Gabriel fumbles for his missing charm, his heart races with a mix of fear and frustration. He curses under his breath, realizing that he must face whatever lurks in the darkness without the protection he had relied on for so long. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he sets his lantern on the ground, casting a small circle of light around him, and tightly grips his mace.

With his weapon in hand, Gabriel focuses his attention on the figure that emerged from the shadows. He strains his eyes to make out the details, trying to discern any recognizable features or intentions. The putrid smell still lingers in the air, intensifying his unease.

Gabriel cautiously takes a step forward, his mace raised, ready to defend himself and his companions. His mind races with thoughts of the Bogratha, the unnatural creatures his grandfather warned him about. He recalls the tales of their insidious powers and their relentless pursuit of the living.

Drawing strength from his memories and his determination to protect his allies, Gabriel calls upon his training and instincts. He assesses the situation, looking for any advantage or weakness he can exploit. The adrenaline coursing through his veins sharpens his senses as he prepares for the impending confrontation.

As he waits for the creature to make its move, Gabriel mentally reminds himself of his own capabilities and the trust his companions have placed in him. With a newfound resolve, he braces himself, ready to face the darkness head-on and defend against whatever horrors it may hold.

Jocelyn sees the undead, seemingly powerful creature; it takes him all his training as a paladin to resist his own fear, but he is able to do so.

The young man walks up to the monster and brandishes his sword.

"I shall smite you, foul creature!" he says in a loud voice before bringing down his weapon.
