Having made sure of the monster, Gwydion withdraws his blades and then gives the carcass another good, spiteful kick. "That'll teach you to wrap little girls in webs and go around biting people."

 

He wipes his weapons clean and then sheathes them at his sides. Not sure how to help freeing the girl, he takes up a position on the far side of the clearing from Baldur, keeping watch as well. "Well, this was a tidy venture. Now, back to the city to get paid. Though, I don't mind waiting for Baldur to chop up the manticore."

Kythera is happy to see the Ettercap fall. That was a particularly nasty bite. In case any more Ettercaps are around here, she keeps the dryad illusion up while she helps remove the webbing to get to the girl.

"Nice job everyone! I didn't know you were such a great shot, Baldur. And nice swinging of your swords Gwydion and Harder. Byra, are you ok? We'll get you freed from these webs as soon as we can."

Byra, halfling daughter of Taem and Gyo

Willow Creek, built right into the side of a large hill it was, they were immediately accosted by a hoarde of beggars as they made their way into the village. They found the village to have no walls and no real militia that they could see. Prominent buildings were:

the Crossed Guard (blacksmith),

the Wise Owl (tavern): Lewis Pickerton (proprietor), Eldeth (dwarf on Inspiration Dust)

Roots and Hourglass (alchemist),

the Bearded Cabinet (general store),

the Temple of the Eternal Mother (church).

Flask and Rat, inn run by a dwarf

Egg walks forward, putting his shield away and getting his waterskin out. He shakes it confirming it is indeed water and not wine inside. "Drink slowly, we'll get you in better shape before we set off." There's a time for clever quips and admonitions, now is not one of them. No, some professionalism, and getting to the task at hand is in order.

"My compliments for taking on a manticore by yourself. You did better than most would have." Most would've been straight up killed, so the bar was set low, but it's a bar she did exceed.

"How about you, Ky? Would you like a bit more healing to close up those wounds?" Some people are eager for the touch of healing magic, others prefer to walk it off once the worst is dealt with. And of course people are allowed to be inconsistent. He leaves the choice up to her.

CHAPTER ONE - BLOOD ON THE CROWN

Ky finishes cutting Byra free from her webbing, the girl is exhausted but relatively unharmed considering the situation. She explains that when she encountered the manticore she activated the magic item and the large web appeared and trapped the creature as she had hoped, but the other creature had appeared as well and soon she found herself trapped in the web.  Then the creature just waited in the trees and watched us. She was not sure why it had not just eaten them yet.

Kythera burns away the web until she gets close to Byra. then she hacks at the last bit of web with her dagger. Once the girl is free, Kythera lets the Dryad disappear. It too dissolves into a puddle of shadows before fading out. She turns to Egg,

"Thank you, but if I can just rest a bit, we can save your divine inspiration. We should watch out for other predators in the forest, but hopefully the Ettercap scared away anything too dangerous."

She rests while Baldur claims his trophies from the manticore.

Willow Creek, built right into the side of a large hill it was, they were immediately accosted by a hoarde of beggars as they made their way into the village. They found the village to have no walls and no real militia that they could see. Prominent buildings were:

the Wise Owl (tavern): Lewis Pickerton (proprietor), Eldeth (dwarf on Inspiration Dust)

Roots and Hourglass (alchemist),

the Bearded Cabinet (general store),

Baldur accepts the compliment about his shooting with a nod of his head and a look that says, "What did you expect?".

So the ettercap thing and the web appeared when you activated your device? If I had to guess, they were linked and you summoned them both. It did not attack or do anything because it was waiting for you to give it some orders. Once we started cutting the webs to get to you, I assume, it thought we were a threat to you and it attacked us. If you knew what you were doing, then you probably could have controlled the beast and we would not have had to fight it. Next time don't play with magic items you don't fully understand.

While the others are freeing her and there appears to be no further danger, Baldur slings his crossbow onto his back and gets out a torch which he lights and then goes over and starts burning away the web so he can get to the manticore. He will chop off the things head and tail, collect the claws and then start skinning it to try to get its hide off. All of which could fetch a decent price, not to mention prove they actually killed the beast.

Yaldiled relaxes as the Ettercap drops, and moves to help free the halfling from the web but she has already been removed. "It may not have, these forests contain dangers. But I agree with Baldur, the evidence more likely favors his interpretation. Messing with magic you don't understand never ends well, item or not."

She does eye the rest of the forest around them, just making sure that nothing else lurks in the trees, perhaps waiting to strike now that the Ettercap is gone. If the others were right about the Ettercap scaring other predators away, there might be something else now closing in. Hopefully of less strength than the spider-faced monster.

Gwydion nods in agreement with the others, shrugging about the magic. "I find I do fine without," he advised the young dwarven lass. "It just makes things complicated."

 

He pauses and looks at her suspiciously. "Come to think of it, where did you find such a valuable trinket, anyway?"

Harder gives the Ettercap a jab as well and then, at the mention of using them to collect a bounty, goes to help Baldur claim the trophies from the manticore.

"Aye, learn to swing a sword lass", he adds to the barrage of advise the halfling girl is receiving. "Simple and effective. And much less likely to backfire on you and eat your soul or suchlike...."

He listens closely to any information about where Byra found her magical trinket. Maybe there was more treasure to be had there.

CHAPTER ONE - BLOOD ON THE CROWN


Over the next hour Baldur did his grizzly work while he lectured Byra on the mistake she had made in order to try and guide her in the correct path for the future.  The dwarf managed to safely collect a dozen of the tail spikes from the creature, and its claws, but the hide was a bit trickier as it had more than a few holes in it, nothing a proper tanner could not work out in the processing. The hide however was bulky and weighed in at around seventy pounds when all was said and done.

When Gwydion asked where the halfling girl had found such a trinket, the halfling girl admitted that she had found it on an adventure, she was reluctant to say where at first but finally admitted it was down by the ruins of the royal summer palace. Of course, she explained she did not enter its ghostly haunted halls, just searched around the grounds outside it.... during the daytime, of course she made sure to clarify.  Not wanting to get in any further trouble.

Once Baldur was ready the group made their way back down to the logging camp, the men there were glad to see the menace that had been plaguing the camp had been dealt with. The leader of the camp, a man named Arder Duhlo even went as far as to tell the group that when they returned to Onadbyr that they could have a free round of drinks on him at the Lucky Leap, just tell Ricio to put it on his tab.

Once done at the camp, the group made their way back into Willow Creek proper. Now they had a decision, to stay another night at the Flask and Rat before heading back or go ahead and begin the journey home.

During the journeys, Kythera talks to Byra about her future.

"How would you like to work for us? Mostly as a bookkeeper and office manager. Nothing dangerous for now. We'd have to train you first, but Harder and Gwydion could show you how to use a sword, Baldur could teach you crossbows, and Yaldiled, Egg and I could see if you have any divine spark or aptitude for arcane magic."

Once back at Willow Creek, as much as Kythera prefers the hammocks to another night on the ground outside, she'd rather get back to Onadbyr as soon as possible.

"Should we see if the halfling woman wants work, too? If we could teach her some magic, or get her some training, she might be a valuable friend. Or... she might be trouble."

Glad to have succeeded at their task and have a living female to bring back instead of a corpse, Baldur wishes to push on and get back to Onadbyr as soon as possible. He nods and grunts when it is suggested he could teach the girl to shoot, but does speak up when asked if they want to pick up another halfling girl to bring along.

I don't think we need to go gathering every lone female halfling we stumble across. We got the one we were after. Let's leave it at that.

He does seem a bit grumpy for some reason. Could be all the extra weight he is carrying.

Gwydion agrees with Baldur regarding the other halfling woman. "The thought does you credit, Ky, but we might want to make sure we have a company before we hire a staff."

 

He bends this way and that, stretching a bit. "I'm ready to continue on. Maybe an hour's rest to get our feet up and a pint down?"

Yaldiled frowns. “I can speak to the dangers that she’s faced, the problems of wanting to become an adventurer without having the proper training for it. Perhaps we can provide that. But the life isn’t for everyone. And I agree with the others, it seems a bit early to discuss bringing people on. Perhaps later, but hopefully before she gets tempted to get into trouble once again.”

"No real percentage in taking in every stray we come across. Besides, if she goes off and gets into more trouble, we can get paid to bail her out again..." Harder says this completely deadpan and it's hard to tell whether the mercenary is joking or not.

"And speaking of getting paid, I'm with Baldur, let's get back to Onadbyr so that can happen."
