Anti-Spam Measures and Community Involvement

As we continue exploring options within the new forum framework, one thing we are attempting to do is thread the needle between keeping spammers out and letting legitimate users in. There are multiple tools that are currently utilized, but as you may have noticed, some spammers still get through.

While it is possible to have all new users go into a pre-moderation period, this effectively stops new members from participating until staff reviews their postings. As things stand, for our relatively low volume of spammers that are getting through, that is not currently desirous.

Instead, we are implementing a community measure to help deal with those spammers that do, unfortunately, make it through. Thus, new user spam / abuse auto-mod has been enabled. Content will be automatically hidden if it is reported by two or more members.

What does that mean? Please report spammers when you see them! As long as two users do it, you'll be saving others from having to see it!

Glad to hear we'll be able to get those threads quickly out of sight.

Do two reports of one spam message / thread autohide all past and future posts from that new user, or must each message / thread be reported individually until they stop spamming / are dealt with by moderators?

It hides everything from that user and prevents additional posts.

Will this only apply to new users, or is it now possible for any user's post to be hidden if it is reported twice?

There is a threshold at which this feature no longer applies. It’s sufficient that it shouldn’t catch any legitimate user.

And the ultimate upshot is, don’t use this to abuse another user. I doubt we’ll have any issues with our community members, but black-balling newcomers for any inappropriate reason will not be tolerated.

Is this a test? Or a spammer trying to game the system by laying a seemingly harmless post that they can go back and edit once the thread has moved on to a new page? It's a very odd thing for a new member to post as their very first post on the forums.

I have not flagged it officially because I don't want to risk blocking a legitimate new member, but maybe worth the mods looking a little closer.
